  • In this video, I prep the front sheet metal for 2K high build primer from PPG. I mix the primer and spray with the Harbor Freight Black Widow gun. I also demonstrate block sanding the hood using guide coat.

    The best low price paint guns I've used are Astro. The Euro Pro HE work great, and I bought an Evo-T for metallics. Around $100 per gun. You can direct purchase different needle & fluid tips from 1.2 to 1.9.

    If you want a car straight you must block sand with at least 100-150 grit the first time. Reprime and do it again and again until perfect. People always want to sand with too fine of paper! Been doing this for over 30 years and cannot stress this enough, we hate wavy cars!

    Boy, that reducer really allows the primer to flow a lot better. Might have to experiment myself as I usually just use primmer surfacer and hardener and it comes out thick and heavy, great practical demonstration. have to go buy some before I spray the body.

    I've always been scared to death to use a box fan for a paint booth. Was always afraid a spark from the motor brushes would start a fire with all the fumes going through it. I'm obviously overthinking things since you use one and obviously haven't had any problems so maybe I'll give it a try next time.

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The average $20 box fan sold an home improvement stores are brushless. There is no start capacitor and no internal centrical switch to change from start windings to run windings. They do use three sets of windings to allow the top switch to change speed due to “Pole” position. Suggestion; look for Jeremy Fielding in youtube, click on his channel as he discusses motor types and universal motors. If the used brushes, they would be $5 more. Hope this helps and Jeremy is a cool guy!

    Just my 2c but you gotta use a siphon feed gun with a 2mm tip for DTM/High build/Epoxy primers - those are hungry paints when it comes to flow rates and few HVLP/LVLP guns can feed them. They need to be hosed on like water on a fire. Otherwise, you're just making work for yourself.

    I see the powder guide coat used more and more. I am guessing it will show sand scratches, pin holes and other defects better than a mist of cheap Matt black paint?
    Another painter save some of his 1k primer in a contrasting color, as a wash for the same purpose. I would guess it would dry within reasonable time and do a decent job. Thanks for the tips, especially the seam sealer on ever panel joint. They build these quick for profit and less effort than a farm tractor. Shame!
    I find blocking easy sand filler a bear on long reverse crowns or concave areas, like the bed side of my 1967 C10. Great video again.

    So many debates over this. Just got off the phone with Tamco they said no filler on bare metal creates heat then condensation on metal and to put over there DTM high build 5310. I do not need epoxy if car is inside all the time it will save you a lot of money just block and top coat your done and still have epoxy properties in the DTM.

      I can't understand what you're trying to tell us because of lack of punctuation and proper grammar. Please, I'm not trying to be nit-pickey, I'm just trying to understand. You say "no filler on bare metal creates heat..." did you mean "do not use filler on bare metal. That creates heat..." or "filler on bare metal creates heat..."? "Put over THEIR DTM high build..."?

    Appreciate this video as I am in the middle of priming my Falcon and using ppg shop line epoxy. I am having to go over some old epoxy that I shot 10 years ago (stalled project) and find myself sanding through to metal in spots while getting the body ready for the new epoxy. It's going to be a bit before I can actually shoot the epoxy primer and was told I CAN'T spray etch (rattle can) primer on the bare metal spots (to keep it from rusting) because it will react with the epoxy primer in a bad way. You mention you have some spots of etch on the hood. Would like your thoughts on using the etch. Is it actually safe to use?

    • @JoDaddysGarage
      @JoDaddysGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used SEM self etch per instructions by my PPG rep. I have filled in spots with a light dusting of self etch when I have broken through my high build. No reactions. If you are recording with epoxy, everything needs to be sanded. Epoxy on has a 4 day window to top coat.

    Excuse my ignorance. Why do you need another primer over the epoxy primer. Why can’t you go straight to the base coat?

    • @JoDaddysGarage
      @JoDaddysGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Epoxy acts as a kind of sealer to the metal. It is sprayed relatively thin. It binds to the metal. High build primer is used to give you something to sand if you need to make sure all the body work is right. It is sprayed thick. If you have a perfect car or panel, you can go straight to base coat. Most people don’t.

      I’m working on my c10 body right now. I’ve sanded the clear coat off which was original paint so maybe 50% of truck still had clear. There’s spots of rust where I’ve taken down to bare metal but other than that the body is straight with no dents. I hit the bare metal with etching primer already. Would you still use an epoxy and then urethane in a case like that? I saw in another comment that you said the epoxy? That makes me only want to do epoxy. My understanding is epoxy can last awhile before paint and my fun time is limited so this may take me a while. I also have come to understand that epoxy is not typically sanded but seems your epoxy is able to be sanded? Thanks!
