As the can is slow method comparing to the gun, I was a bit surprised that You started from the middle. I got excellent results without later sanding by starting from the side going wet over the hood. Next layer wet enough, and it came just fine. The garage was cool enough, as was the can to allow working time. Modern 2K clears in a can are better than most think. I also used once a nozzle button from a primer can with the clear can, it has bigger "hole", so it sprays much bigger flow, and it sometimes helps but has a bit less ideal spray pattern that must be kept in mind.
I just finished painting my cars door using your method and it came out excellent. This is my first time and I'm amazed how good it looks. Thanks for the video . I'll be doing the hood next weekend. Thank you

Thanks so much for this video! I did my first paint job with your help. Complete repainting of hood - sanding to the metal, primer, paint, clear coat. Looks very well! :)
I WAS going to paint the van that I'm customizing myself to travel the U.S. but now I realize I should be washing dishes. Thanks for your enlightenments.
HEY! I also was looking at this video because I'm in the process of building out my 1995 Ford Econoline to travel cross country with my boyfriend! What are some other good videos you've found?
Actually, start moving your arm BEFORE you start spraying. This prevents runs and build-ups. And, keep moving your arm AFTER you stop spraying. Same reason. Very inspirational video. I've been wanting to do my van and now I feel that I can do it. The problem with the van is that the clear coat on the fiberglass raised roof top is flaking off in large pieces but the color coat is fine, just dull. Every time I go to the car wash I use the pressure-wand to remove another few inches of clear coat.
Hey everyone, the greatest results that ive had was by using the Magic Painter Method (i found it on google) without a doubt the best course that I've tried.
Amazing advice and easy to use products. I painted my rear bumbper in that same way, and it came out better than the rest of the car! Whether thats good or bad, this a great video. Thanks!
Hey, great video, I just bought 1948 chevy which has a few areas that need blending, it's also black and after watching this video I'm gonna give it a try, great instructions...Ralph
New to me was the notion of sanding boundaries which clarifies so much about which grits to use during the prep process and why. Thanks. I will use this knowledge often.
I´ve seen several of your videos. This one keeps the good level. Thanks for sharing. ;-) My 2 cents to anyone doing this. Use the new spray can in the horizontal area first. Then move to the vertical area. Otherwise a lot of paint might go to waste and irregular paint pattern can become an issue. If possible, it´s better to remove the hood and paint it in a vertical position or close to it. Many rattle cans have a straight pick up tube, so when half empty start to pull out only the gas. Hope it makes sense. :-) Cheers
Great video, can’t believe I just watched another video and the kid didn’t go over what number grids he was using , you did a great job thank you for that
Great video. Please keep SAFETY in mind. You should not be doing this without a respirator, especially the 2k paints. It's insta-cancer. To anyone looking to do this, PLEASE invest $20 in a 3M respirator.
David Vogt I won't even use the the $20 respirators when I'm spraying 2K. IMO, they don't offer a good enough seal. I will only use at least a full-face respirator like the 3M 6800. Additionally, cartridges meant to filter out isocyanates, such as the 3M 60921, which offers up to 8 hours of isocyanate protection, should be used. This stuff is dangerous.
David Vogt Insta-cancer... you sound like a warning label from the state of California. Respirators are definitely encouraged, however there are so many variables regarding chemical exposure. Just because a chemical “can” cause cancer doesn’t mean it will.
I like dish soap as well I use it for paint wet-sanding, car wash, wash my dishes, etc. I use it in the shower. I use it to wash my hair. Dish soap is All-In-One product. It saves me money on not having to buy any other kind of soap for home/auto use.
Yes I use Palmolive liquid dish soap for all my car and home needs and for my shower. I use it to wash my hair it works real good just as good as body soap. Palmolive dish soap kills 99.9% germs / bacteria. This is good cause it saves me great deal of money not having to buy other fancy soaps.
No not really surprisingly it doesn't leave my hair dry... it feels natural and let the bodily oil to re-condition my hair.. I think it's the body soap caused more harm leaving my hair and body dry.
IamAnoobiecheez It really isn't that bad I sometimes use oil based pomades in my hair and if you don't want to buy expensive as shampoos to remove it you just use dish soap. Works great
Nice! Funny I did the same thing, spray can basecoat and 9 cans of clearcoat. Just wanted to get more ideas with wet sanding and buffing. Your video provided good tips to remember with do it yourself in home garage. Thanks!
I didn't know this about ladies and dish washing. When mine's finished mopping the floors, I'm gonna get her onto the dishes! Greatly appreciate this informative video.... thumbs up!
Great video but you need to wear a respirator that filters out organic vapors when spraying any 2k primer or clear. People have died from not wearing the proper respirator working in body shops. You should do a video more in depth about respirators. I actually did not know this until just recently, and a lot of people are not aware how extreme the dangers are. Keep up the good videos.
yes organic vapors w/pre filters on a 3/4 respirator. Back in the early 80's when Ditzler came out with Deltron acrylic urethane ,our local Ditzler jober told me that the Ditz rep for alaska nearly died from not wearing a respirator when they were testing Deltron. His blood became so thick it nearly hardened in his veins, the dude was very lucky to survive. Dangerous atmospheres will kill you quick. Even bondo / primer dust will get you.
I was impressed recently at how easily the Dawn removed grease off my hands, arm and big belly after squeezing under my 30 year old motor home. It was amazing.
You're videos are amazing brother!!! I've watched quite a few of your videos and they have helped me tremendously on various projects. You are very talented and greatly appreciated my friend. God bless you buddy
So I finally pulled the trigger on old Blackjack. You think the F150 hood was bad? You ain't seen nuttin'! Followed your advice, for the most part. I had to do a bit more with mine since it was peeling down to the bare aluminum. And I had to do mine outside. But the results were "okay". If I had spent more time in prep and more sanding, it would have been better. But from where it started to where it ended, it's a 100% improvement. I would suggest if you're on a budget, though, that you might THINK rattle can paint is cheaper - it's not. And the results you'll get from having a clean place, a compressor and a gun will be a lot better. But with an old $1500 beater, I really can't complain! Thank you for the video! It helped a lot. Even more thanks to my neighbor that let me park it in their garage for the night with rain coming in and the paint was still tacky. Overall, it has more texture and orange peel than a fruit stand. But I think some wet sanding, if I get ambitious, a cut and polish can clear a lot of that up. But there are still defects you can see from where I probably should have stepped down after the high fill primer to a less aggressive grit sandpaper and smoothed it more. I had to start with 40 grit just to get the paint off that was peeling so bad. Then 100, then 220, then self etching primer, then high fill primer before I could move up to hand sanding at 400 grit and then lay the base. But I should have gone up to 800 or 1000 before laying the base. Otherwise, hey, it's one color and the shine isn't bad. More like semi-gloss than glassy. But it's even and not bad, no streaks, and looks decent for a DIY rattle can job done outside in the yard!
Screw elbow grease. I'll take the short cut. Then when people ask about the rough finish, I'll say, "What rough finish? I don't know what you're talking about."
For the last base coat split the hood into 3 sections, and paint vertically. It will remove horizontal lines..Start from the back and move forward..Your video makes the final product look great.Im sure it was ok...Always nice to learn..Thank you for sharing:)
This is by far the most accurate video thanks for sharing im gonna do on my Honda Civic hatchback 98 green colour the only question how long before wet sanding and waxing after 2k spray
Very complete guide to the work you do , and good commentary as well. But ofc the respirator and most of all never stop in the middle of the object you are working on, always continue to the edge.
Very funny about dishes. I love to take care of my kitchen, but also of my car. This is a pretty good one. Thanks for the tips. I hope to have same results in mine.
Housework can be done anytime. I love caring for my apartment and my cars. Learned from my father, my brothers & a good car club friend. Also from the National El Camino Association on Facebook. Thanks for great video, can I suggest not stopping pressing spray can button betweeen sweeps but continue with spray to stop what I call "misfires" in job.Makes the process a none stop sweep and for me anyway, a better finish. Great instructional video, many thanks for upload and share.
Hey turned out not bad quick tip when you clear coat never ever start your first pass in the middle by the time you come to the other side it's dry u need wet on wet in order to melt the clear that's why you have the streak dry line.
Haha great vid man. I just picked up a civic to flip may have to try this. The deck lid needs some work. I was going to watch this with Mrs.O but she was busy in the kitchen doing dishes. Good woman right!? :D
lol you are a lucky man Eric O. it seems like she does a lot of work at the shop too :) This should work well on the deck lid, just know it will be a lot more shinny than the rest of the car especially if its an older vehicle.
I spent a career as a teacher of an applied science and technology, and I wish I had seen your vids when I started. Excellent teaching techniques. Were you trained as a teacher?
I did this a while back. Saved me a lot of money, though when the door was painted and sanded I was like. Wow this looks really good. To bad I now have to do the rest of the car. Cause the door looked better then the rest of the car.😂 Anyway, I forgot to say thanks . Now I did.
really enjoying you pod cast. I have just got a 1950 Mercury and would like tho put some Lace on the hood and the top and trunk lid. using rattle cans. could you please show how to do this.
I'm very glad I came across these videos. I had no idea how to get a rattle can job to stay. I would do some sanding then dry then spray a primer and after it dried out I painted but nothing like you have shared. Ty. Also the headlights amazing. I sprayed some insect repellent we use when we go fishing, camping etc. and it did look better but it isn't anything like you shared....
An impressive video. Mostly due to the manner of the presentation of instruction is what I liked best. Damn good quality and real confidence builder for the DIYer. Very well done!
Question: I'm about to rattle can spray a 27 year old car hood, roof and hatchback in semi-gloss Hammered Black. The clear coat is 50% gone on these areas, some base fading also. Original base coat is dark hunter green. There are some small rock dings and scratches of course. Since the car already has paint on it, and it was sanded smooth with 400 grit paper, I know I don't need primer but I was going to use black primer to best ensure adhesion of top coats and fill in some minor imperfections. Should I allow primer to dry for 12 to 24 hours and then sand the primer with 400 to 600 grit? Or not sand it and just let it dry before top coats? The final coats will be 2 or 3 sprays of Hammered Black so that should cover up and fill in a lot of imperfections also. Thanks!

Great job! Thank you for all the explanation on details. But when I saw you using the air blow gun.. I was also thinking ..if you have an air compressor.. what's the point of using the rattle cans? I believe lots of people use rattle cans not because they don't have the paint gun, but because they don't have an air compressor at home (or they don't have a place like a garage to use air compressor and paint gun.). Just my thoughts :) Thanks again for another great video! I'm gnna work on my car soon too! Cheers!
Nice job good tips, I've got the classic Chev paint peeling on the hood of my 2005 Denali. She is white so I'm hoping blending will be easier. I'm going to do the entire hood but it's peeling mostly at the front and edges.
Nice. It is a lot of work but worth it in the end. It would be nice to have seen the completed job after the wet sanding and polishing of the fenders to compare to the hood. Also, you are a funny guy. I love your dry humor.
Awesome video. I have 2006 Camry, the entire roof is now full of cracks. How can i tell if its the clear coat or paint? And what do i need to do to repair this myself.
So you used 400 grit for the primed area and above the repair area on the painted surface you used 1500 grit or I guess what is equivalent which is the Grray Scotch Brite pad? I have seen people typically use a red scotch Brite pad or 600 grit sand paper to.scuff up the painted surface. Would either methods work? Or is the method you are using better? I am of course new and will be using spray cans to do a couple of areas on my vehicle. I also noticed that all the clear coat passes you did they are equally.meaning your first coat wasn't tacky lord lightly put on as the reco Med and 2nd and 3rd more wet. Thanks for this great video!
I would'nt be using that Meguiars soap when doing paint and body work.It clearly says it wont strip wax. When doing paint and body work thats what you want to do, strip wax, grease ,silicone tar etc. Thats why we use a wax and grease remover before and after sanding and or painting. So to make a long story short I would rather use a dish soap like Dawn, then a wax and grease remover.
I just did my rims all black. Wash rims, rinse, sandpaper, rinse, air dry, tape 2 wheels Right or left, 4 cans of regular BLK for layering then gloss black for top coat ×2 then 1 can of clear coat. they look amazing
That is often the first thing a car thief will do when it stays on the road in the city where it was stolen. But I doubt it's done to the "look amazing" level. When I recovered my stolen car, the rims looked awful in black.
why didn’t you use the paper method when spraying your primer? it would have feathered in seamlessly. this is gonna look like shit when the sun fades it down some. also: use dish soap when you prep your car for paint. i, as a woman, know that it cuts through grease and wax which is exactly what you need. the type of car wash you used legit said and you even read out loud that it doesn’t take wax or grease off, like what was the point of washing it if you don’t take off the wax and grease?? when you paint a panel, you need something for the paint to bond to, and if you still have any wax or grease on your car, it’s not gonna stick as well and it’s gonna end up looking patchy after some odd months of use. i understand that’s what the primer is for, but that’s useless too unless it bonds to the car. i could be wrong, i’m definitely not an expert, but by the looks of it, this guy isn’t either. he’s cutting some corners that are vital to a flawless product. it might look decent now, but i’d like to see an update for a year after.
margot myers I went to school for autobody and this guy did just fine. You could use dawn to wash the car as some insurance but it doesn't really matter Bc the sanding and scuffing will remove most of the wax anyway. It's just to get rid of grime that will gouge the rest of the paint while sanding. The most important step is using the wax and grease remover before applying the primer but he did make one small mistake. When using the wax and grease remover you want to apply it really wet then before it dries go over it with a dry towel to soak up the excess. That way you're soaking up the wax and grease. If you just just apply some and rub it around and let it dry you're just spreading it around. He used a 2k clear so I doubt there will be any problems for many many years. The rest of the paint job will fail before the hood.
Thanks for a very good instructional video. I am going to use the information to repaint my Toyota Tacoma canopy, or topper.

I think you made a wrong turn, the kitchen is that way ---->
Actually, start moving your arm BEFORE you start spraying.
Rattle can repairs FTW! I do the majority of the paint repairs on my channel using just spray cans and have always achieved a top result!
That paint job looks super. 2K is the way to go, a superior product by far. Hard to credit that finish from a rattle can ! Job well done .
Thanks!
2K is very dangerous. Please use goggles, respirator, elbow length gloves, and an apron while spraying and always in a well ventilated area.
Nice Job!! i actually did my car in matte white and than wet sanded it with 1500 grit sandpaper. Skipped all the clear coat stuff and looks great!

Thanks for sharing. ;-)
My 2 cents to anyone doing this.
Cheers

Great video, can’t believe I just watched another video and the kid didn’t go over what number grids he was using , you did a great job thank you for that
He’s good at explaining and helping, and I’m happy about how he just keeps explaining even with his lunch. And the dishes thing.
Whats so bad about the 2k?
google "dangers of 2K paints" or "isocyanate poisoning"
SuzieQ Heavenlyowls lmao
David Vogt Insta-cancer... you sound like a warning label from the state of California. Respirators are definitely encouraged, however there are so many variables regarding chemical exposure. Just because a chemical “can” cause cancer doesn’t mean it will.
I like dish soap as well I use it for paint wet-sanding, car wash, wash my dishes, etc. I use it in the shower. I use it to wash my hair. Dish soap is All-In-One product. It saves me money on not having to buy any other kind of soap for home/auto use.
IamAnoobiecheez
your hair really lmfao
everything else except that
Yes I use Palmolive liquid dish soap for all my car and home needs and for my shower. I use it to wash my hair it works real good just as good as body soap. Palmolive dish soap kills 99.9% germs / bacteria. This is good cause it saves me great deal of money not having to buy other fancy soaps.
IamAnoobiecheez
Does it leave your hair really dry ?
No not really surprisingly it doesn't leave my hair dry... it feels natural and let the bodily oil to re-condition my hair.. I think it's the body soap caused more harm leaving my hair and body dry.
IamAnoobiecheez It really isn't that bad I sometimes use oil based pomades in my hair and if you don't want to buy expensive as shampoos to remove it you just use dish soap. Works great
The california burrito is one of the steps. You cant paint the car without a California burrito lunch break.

Hadi Qasmieh that’s actually very true. If you leave out the California burrito step you will get terrible paint results
That's why it's not sold at average stores
yes organic vapors w/pre filters on a 3/4 respirator. Even bondo / primer dust will get you.
the catalyst nowadays are not as strong as they were back then, but just as deadly
Stop talking so much
@@bobpope2990 So what respirator do you recommend+prefilters?
I always keep a bottle of Dawn in my shop, it comes in handy and cheaper than most automotive products.
I was impressed recently at how easily the Dawn removed grease off my hands, arm and big belly after squeezing under my 30 year old motor home. It was amazing.
my god.. that is so therapeutic and satisfying...
I should start doing this as a hobby..
You forgot to include the link for the elbow grease. Please provide. Thank you
I've looked everywhere for elbow grease, can't seem to find it anywhere.

it's beside the blinker fluid.
Right above your wrists.

Hey turned out not bad quick tip when you clear coat never ever start your first pass in the middle by the time you come to the other side it's dry u need wet on wet in order to melt the clear that's why you have the streak dry line.

Thanks!
I hope nobody checked for the “elbow grease” link 😂
Yeah, can't find it. Where do I get some???

Just my thoughts :)
Thanks again for another great video!

I would'nt be using that Meguiars soap when doing paint and body work.It clearly says it wont strip wax. When doing paint and body work thats what you want to do, strip wax, grease ,silicone tar etc. Thats why we use a wax and grease remover before and after sanding and or painting. So to make a long story short I would rather use a dish soap like Dawn, then a wax and grease remover.
pitlion1 didn't you watch the video?? He said he didn't have any dish soap at the shop and he will be using a wax remover and degreaser after anyway.
Top video my first spray job its on my 1990 merc 190e 2.5 16v cosworth let you know how i go.
Great job! I want to try on our car, but i am a woman, so what soap do i need 😂🤣
We can figure it out
why didn’t you use the paper method when spraying your primer? it would have feathered in seamlessly. this is gonna look like shit when the sun fades it down some. also: use dish soap when you prep your car for paint. i, as a woman, know that it cuts through grease and wax which is exactly what you need. the type of car wash you used legit said and you even read out loud that it doesn’t take wax or grease off, like what was the point of washing it if you don’t take off the wax and grease?? when you paint a panel, you need something for the paint to bond to, and if you still have any wax or grease on your car, it’s not gonna stick as well and it’s gonna end up looking patchy after some odd months of use. i understand that’s what the primer is for, but that’s useless too unless it bonds to the car. i could be wrong, i’m definitely not an expert, but by the looks of it, this guy isn’t either. he’s cutting some corners that are vital to a flawless product. it might look decent now, but i’d like to see an update for a year after.
margot myers I went to school for autobody and this guy did just fine.
He used was and grease remover dumbo. Lol just looking for things to get offended by
he said “it’s about freezing temperature here in southern california, which is about 65 degrees fahrenheit” 😭😭
