I'm the girl singing with the Royal Teens. This tape is when we appeared on the first Dick Clark Show in February 1958.....Bob Gaudio went on to form The Four Seasons and we all know how well he did. I went on to sing and dance at the NY World's Fair and on TV and in clubs. Thanks for showing something that changed my life. Diane

Even today if you sing out, "Who wears short shorts?" everybody, teenagers included, will answer, "We wear short shorts."
It's just a fun song and I'm glad you and the other Royal Teens made it.

Very first Dick Clark Saturday night program. I don't think it was entitled the "Dick Clark Beech-Nut Show" at the beginning; it went unsponsored the first few weeks before Beech-Nut Gum got on board to sponsor it. And didn't Jerry Lee Lewis do "Great Balls of Fire" live because he chose not to lip-sync, which he called "charades"?

My cousin called when this was on TV, shouting "did you see it!!!!!" This was during one of the high tension incidents with Cuba and the Soviet Union. Given his frantic tone I thought at first the missiles were on the way! Then he said that Jerry Lee was on and there's gonna be a riot. I ran to my TV and endured the LONG 25 seconds tube warm up and then I saw what was making him crazy. No One today I think can appreciate just how outrageous and RADICAL Jerry Lee was for that time. Like a double AA fuel dragster among Volkswagens. I'll never forget that day and the now hilarious call from my cousin and the supercharged performance which was bot great then but also years ahead it its time

It sounded like crap, then again I guess there was nothing else to gauge it by. Oh wait! Other performers had performed on Clark's shows and didn't sound like crap!!!
Don't understand what all the Jerry Lee hype was about anyway. Going to England exposed him, it wasn't his marriage they didn't like, they didn't like his music, just like in England they didn't like Bill Haley and the Comets either.

The staging of "Short Shorts" on the stairs and in the lobby is pretty kooky, including the short shorts gal tossing the receiver down in the phone booth and not even hanging up. I'm amused that the Royal Teens themselves were dressed in Bermuda shorts, a new fashion trend for men at the time.

I remember when this song was out and several girls tried to wear short shorts to school. What a riot! The school council met in emergency session called by our hair trigger principal. They rushed to BAN all short shorts and in some cases Bermuda shorts from the school and warned all girls not to be seen anywhere in the area of the school! Of course, this caused a wave of girls who were not students wearing the shorts as near to several schools. The press got involved and several Churches. What a scene, all caused by the dastardly Royal Teens....

Only Lewis and Fats Domino ever performed live on this series. Everybody else did the lip synch thing.
RE: What is the actual date of this premiere episode? The Dick Clark Media Archives has it at 2/14/58.
As for Clark's TV schedule back then, FIVE days a week of two and a half hour episodes of American Bandstand aired from Philadelphia plus this show, broadcast from NYC on Saturday nights.
All LIVE- NO TAPE. At least in the first years.
The "Saturday Night Shows" that broadcast from outside locations were then taped after the disastrous Atlantic City remote ,portions of which are posted elsewhere on YT.
Clark later taped AB episodes in advance during the show's Philadelphia years particularly to allow for live appearances of his "Rock n Roll Caravan" package shows across the country.
By the time AB moved to LA in late 1963, shows were taped probably 4 weeks ahead of broadcast.
From c. mid 1963, AB went from 5 days a week to Saturday only. Many weeks of shows could be taped in one day sessions.
To his credit, Clark was still ahead in timing artist appearances, so that in most cases episodes aired at the point when interest was peaking in an artist or record.
After the mid sixties AB was less of a breaking ground for new faces and material.
While many artists were first seen on AB, there were now other outlets by which TV exposure was available in the later sixties going forward.
By the seventies and into the eighties, AB was no longer the musical cutting edge vehicle it had once been.
Once MTV arrived in August 1985, AB's days were numbered.

This tape is the original member of the Royal Teens, Diane Costello, Bob Gaudio, Tom Austin, Bill Dalton and Larry Qualiano. We made another record called "Big Name Button" which wasn't the hit "Short Shorts" was.
After I left the group a guy from the Four Friends named Joey Villia joined the four guys in the group, and I believe Al Cooper joined after he left.
After 50 years I was in touch with Billy Dalton who passed away recently, and I'm still in touch with Tom Austin the drummer.

Is the date of the Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show correct? If it is correct, then Dick was doing two shows a week, every week from 1958 to 1960. But I don't believe that he was, and I don't believe that the airdate is correct either. I've looked at the February 1958 calendar online, and it says the 1rst, 8th, 15th, and 22nd, are all Saturdays. So this tells me that this is the Premiere Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show from February 15th 1958. This person who uploaded these Dick Clark shows should have show logs, that tell you every person and every performance on every Beechnut show. Thus the logs tell you the info.

This was the first telecast of 'THE DICK CLARK SHOW", originally seen on February 15, 1958 (a Saturday). It wasn't until two weeks later, on March 1st, that Beech-Nut gum became his regular sponsor {as "THE DICK CLARK SATURDAY NIGHT BEECH-NUT SHOW"}. Dick showed this 16mm kinescope to Edward J. Noble, the chairman of Beech-Nut/Life Savers a week after its telecast. After ten minutes, Noble insisted the projector be turned off! He then said to Clark, "That was the worst show I've ever seen! But it'll sell a lot of my gum." He turned to his aide, and barked, "BUY THE SHOW!"
