    WOW! This is me at age 16. I will be 82 in March 2023. We made this in February 1958. It's amazing that all these years later people still remember it, it's still being played, and even young kids know it.

      Dear Diane. I used to teach high school and one day the female assistant principal came around and got on some of the girls for their "short shorts." After she left I showed the students this video on youtube. THEY LOVED IT. The girls especially. They related to it and I think you even inspired them. Take care and trust me, your memory and this song will last for centuries!!!!

    That's Bob Gaudio on piano, who co-wrote this song with the rest of the members. He went on to being a founding member of The Four Seasons after he met Frankie Valli. From there he wrote most all of their hits like Sherry, Rag Doll, Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You, Who Loves You, Oh What A Night & more. He later wrote or produced for Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Neil Diamond, Roberta Flack, Frank Sinatra and others. He's been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Not a bad run after starting out with this groovy & catchy confection!

      It was originally supposed to be only an instrumental, titled "Short Shorts". At the recording session, the producer insisted, that The Royal Teens write some lyrics for it, so during a break, they quickly put some words to it.
      The title, "Short Shorts" popped into one of their heads, when they were cruising along and saw a couple of girls walking out of a candy store wearing rather short, for the 1950's, cut off blue jeans.

      Yes, they were, however, they are now only memories, of a time gone by, never to be seen again. Yep, it took me a few years to truly understand the old phrase..............'You can never go home again'. Now, I finally know.........you can't. So sad. These songs do bring back those memories, and you once again, no matter how fleeting it is, are transformed to a far away time and place.

It's from a movie back in '58, a movie called, "Let's Rock," it starred Julius La Rosa, there's some absolute radio history behind this man, go google it. Anyway the movie is about a singer who needed to get into the rock n' roll era if he wanted to stay relevant in the industry. As Julius was a 40's early 50's type singer at the time and needed to get hep.

    Anyone else laughing at how the kids in the audience are not clapping in time?

    • @sparky6086
      @sparky6086 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Very sloppy editing. ...The story goes, that the audience was filmed on a different day and was clapping in time to a different song, perhaps even a different band. To go along with the narrative of the story, the editors spliced in the film of that audience, figuring, that it was just a drive in "B" movie, so they weren't going to spend the extra time and money to film an audience clapping in time to the song. It was a throw away, low production value movie for teenagers, featuring music which at the time, was seen by the adult producers as a passing fad.
      The forlorn loking guy standing behind the audience, is supposed to be an old school, pre-Rock & Roll crooner type singer watching himself displaced by the latest music trend.

      @@sparky6086 But the lips of the kids match the lyrics of the song. At 1:02 the best example is the girl of the low right. I bet there was some person or teacher (with lack of good rhythm) guiding the the clapping of the kids.

    The sax player on the record was Billy Crandall who was 14 at the time. His parents wouldn't let him go out on tour so they got a different guy for live appearances. I don't know which one this guy is. Nice sax solo though.
