And Tim always kept a straight face. The one time he really cracked up was during a "Mama's Family" skit where Mama called Tim an a**hole. Both Tim and guest star Dick Van Dyke (sp)? fell on the floor laughing.

Conway had the ability to get real silly, but his schtick was more in the vein of Bob Newhart who was better at it. But I'd be really hard pressed to pick between those two. Newhart could never be a regular on the Burnett show, but Conway could never deliver the deadpan like Newhart. That old era of comedy was truly Golden.

@@davebender8901 Yep. And I like a good cuss and double entendre as much as the next feller, but the best comedy is comedy of concepts. No blue required. Going blue is cheap and easy.

Seems like yesterday we were all watching this show in real time. You just don't see classic performers like this much anymore. Tim's deadpan comedy was so funny and entertaining. I once saw him do a show where the guests did not show up at all! They were all delayed by traffic or some such, and could not make it on time. They would be there a little bit late, and Carson had to fill the time somehow. A producer sent someone out to grab three random guys off the street!
Carson made them look good. He made them look interesting and funny just talking about their lives and what they did for a living and stuff. He didn't have to fill a lot of time, but during that time those men shown like diamonds.
Johnny Carson just had this incredible skill of pulling the very best out of people when he was talking to them. We are all the poorer for not having him around anymore, and I so wish that there had been someone to fill his shoes.

I remember getting up to stay late to watch this with my parents and Arnold Palmer was the guest. I think he had just won the Masters, and Johnny asked him if there was any special ritual he did since athletes are often superstitious. Arnold said that his wife always kissed his balls before he went out on the course. And without a seconds hesitation, Johnny said “I bet that really straightens out your putter!” I was probably 12 or 13 at the time and I don’t know who is more embarrassed my parents or me. But I remember that to this day how quick-witted he was.
