I had the good fortune of seeing Jerry Lee Lewis in the mid to late 1990s in Washington DC in concert featuring James Burton on guitar at the 930 club. It was one of the best concerts I ever attended. Jerry Lee was in great voice that night and he played blues ...rock ‘n’ roll ..country and sounded great doing all of it. I think the main reason Jerry Lee is still around today outliving Elvis Presley and so many others, is that he kept it real and didn’t let fame go to his head.

I think Jerry Lee would have told you himself that the only person who could handle him was his mother. Certainly no interviewer could handle him. All Cavett could do was try to get through it without any profanity or bloodshed. I think he was a fan and could have done a good interview if Jerry Lee had cooperated a bit more.
Same with Little Richard, but Mr. Penneman had even less patience with Dick than Lewis, telling him to literally "shut up" at several points in the interview!
This was 1971. Led Zeppelin debuted in 1969 & Black Sabbath debuted in 1970. i wondered what these 50's -60's Rockers impressions were of them? A new generation with a different mood, perspective & rebellion.
Jerry Lee Lewis later recorded with Jimmy Page and Elvis was a Zeppelin fan. I don't think that Chuck Berry or Little Richard would have been too fond of Zep or Sabbath though.

It's interesting to see by this point in time -- 1971 -- that Rock n' Roll of the 1950s seems (particulary by the audience's reaction) like some long, lost music that'd been pushed aside and replaced by the Beatles, the Stones, and Jimi Hendrix and all of the music that had come about. And it had only been 16 years.
Great art usually isn't fully appreciated until decades and decades afterwards. Today, listening to elvis's studio recordings at sun, it's REVELATORY. TIMELESS

I've seen Dick Cavett stumble along awkwardly into 'darkest Africa' before; you have to wonder why Cavett's producers thought he could gracefully, successfully manage to conduct an interview [or even save face] in particular encounters - especially those who weren't interested in fencing with and were not amused by...or even able to figure out where Cavett was coming from. Not that Cavett couldn't rise to the occasion in fine fashion with many from worlds/fields of endeavor with which he was more familiar...lovely in many ways, Cavett breathed an air more urbane & cultured - but lacked the maturity & versatility to handle himself in certain arenas.
Everyone is complaining about how arrogant Jerry Lee is. While they’re not wrong, I think that’s part of his appeal as an artist. He’s gifted and he knows it. If I had his piano skills, I’d probably brag too.
Otis wrote a few good songs. But it was the artists who made them greater. For every million songwriters, there's just one Ella Fitzgerald. One frank Sinatra. One Ray charles. You need a sense of perspective.

What probably made him more bitter than anything was that Elvis was no better in that area, but he had someone who could control him, control his image, and keep things quiet. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if they kept their own on stage personas, but switched off stage personalities and support systems (or lack of). What would have come of each of their careers?

It's interesting to see by this point in time -- 1971 -- that Rock n' Roll of the 1950s seems (particulary by the audience's reaction) like some long, lost music that'd been pushed aside and replaced by the Beatles, the Stones, and Jimi Hendrix and all of the music that had come about. And it had only been 16 years.
Great art usually isn't fully appreciated until decades and decades afterwards.
Today, listening to elvis's studio recordings at sun, it's REVELATORY.

However, the form was popularized by the mid 1950s (1954 to 1956) by white music groups like Bill Haley & The Comets, as well as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.

I've seen Dick Cavett stumble along awkwardly into 'darkest Africa' before; you have to wonder why Cavett's producers thought he could gracefully, successfully manage to conduct an interview [or even save face] in particular encounters - especially those who weren't interested in fencing with and were not amused by...or even able to figure out where Cavett was coming from. Not that Cavett couldn't rise to the occasion in fine fashion with many from worlds/fields of endeavor with which he was more familiar...lovely in many ways, Cavett breathed an air more urbane & cultured - but lacked the maturity & versatility to handle himself in certain arenas.
He had the best guests and the most uncomfortable interview technique. Such a shame

Everyone is complaining about how arrogant Jerry Lee is. While they’re not wrong, I think that’s part of his appeal as an artist. He’s gifted and he knows it. If I had his piano skills, I’d probably brag too.
Otis Blackwell was for real. the Killer never hesitated to mention a songwriter when he'd do a cover.
Otis wrote a few good songs.
But it was the artists who made them greater.
For every million songwriters, there's just one Ella Fitzgerald.

You need a sense of perspective.
The Killer is in prime form....I think Jerry Lee Lewis was the greatest rock and roll performer of all time......I had never seen anyone put on a show better than the Killer.

@@bradhuskers I think that he believed that he was more talented than Elvis and Elvis became his great rival. That would never change for JLL. His marriage ruined his career. What probably made him more bitter than anything was that Elvis was no better in that area, but he had someone who could control him, control his image, and keep things quiet. JLL didn't have that luxury. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if they kept their own on stage personas, but switched off stage personalities and support systems (or lack of). What would have come of each of their careers?

Wow. Never knew about this. Jerry during his unhinged early 70’s era. Well, that lasted until recently. When he takes a pause, the world gets mighty quiet. Yee-haw. Would love to have heard Me And Bobby McGee from this show.
Cavett is great and always takes conversations to unusual places, but here he doesn't quite realize who Jerry Lee Lewis really is. Not really. He's interviewing an icon and a man who almost singlehandedly elevated rock music to the stratosphere.
