  • Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain are probably some of the most popular examples of celebrities that choose a "small-town romanticized aesthetic", but what you may not know is just how beneficial romanticizing your life in general can be. Ever since the meteoric rise of Lana Del Rey, social media, and later artists like Ethel Cain, reclaiming your narrative and appreciating your life has gained mainstream popularity. In todays video i wanted to talk about Lana Del Rey (aka Lizzy Grant), Ethel Cain, different eras in Art history, and the psychological benefits of romanticizing your life. Romanticizing life has definitely become a trend in recent years and hopefully in this video i can help explain why its much more impactful than people may know

      i think lana’s music rewired my brain. her video games music video gave me so much peace on first watch; now i seek that vintage-y simple living aesthetic in my own life. everything about her art is bare and raw and beautiful, and as someone who has experienced depression, that vulnerable expression is really comforting

    I found Lana when I was 13 and struggling with poverty and puberty and learning the cost of beauty in this dark world. She saved me and seeing someone romanticize the kind of life I was born into was so comforting. I was kidnapped at 14 and played her music in my head in my darkest times had her in my mind as an imaginary friend. Maybe it sounds unhealthy but sometimes you just have to survive.

    "god loves you, but not enough to save you" is such a haunting lyric from ethel cain. she's such an incredible artist who, like lana, finds the middle ground between romanticization of life and realistic depictions of the trauma of it

    As someone who romanticizes my life sometimes, honestly it is more of an escapist cope than an example of real mindfulness. It's a way of not being in denial of your pain (which is a good thing) but also not actually feeling it directly in its full unglamorousness. I find romanticization often times is a way of actually holding our pain at arm's length in a counterintuitive way, which can make it less painful but also prevents you from healing fully. Doesn't stop me from loving Lana and Ethel though.

    I found Ethel Cain early last year and my life completely changed. Never have I felt so represented in somebody's music, her unreleased songs that are so specific to some of my trauma, the tears I could finally cry because there was finally music about what I have lived through, the way I could finally let it out and feel it fully and let it go. A lot of people try to say oh it's just romanticizing being abused!! But for some of us, we need this stuff so we feel less alone, doesn't mean any of us think it's fun or cute to go through. They are both such powerful artists, both my favorites who keep me going

    9:44-9:53 thank you! this is why no matter what anyone’s said about her writing or personas i’ve been a supporter of her art since day one (which for me was in 2011. i wish i knew her when she was singing in bars!) her unreleased stuff is what made me love her because you could be as glamorous in the dirt (feel as beautiful in the drabness) as you always wished you could be; feel as freed of (but not as hateful of yourself in) your traumas and addictions and whatnot; etc. her hard-to-interpret songs were portraits of many different personas and the music/videos were her trying to beautify them all, no matter how personal or darkly misunderstood, and standing for it even when people didn’t get it. many didn’t respect her, even lorde spoke against lana when she came up, not realizing she was writing the same kind of romanticizing-life-music…but with different topics of discussion so, understood much differently. (b/c lana sang about how she at times loved men or drugs with such intensity that it was killing her or ruining her, lorde and others like her took it as her living only for romance and not for herself, and making it sound cool to party or whatever, when it was genuinely painting the portrait of how dark love & life can become, how it completely transforms and consumes us.. but she found ways to lighten it up and make us not hate ourselves for it regardless. no matter how much hate she got for doing so! which i respected more than i can possibly describe. even if it seems like i described it already _too much_ here.
    and then we see her later transformation, unexpected by many, into romanticizing life in a more acceptable way, but still uniquely her, especially with it being at dark times. even her fame is discussed somewhat with an uncomfortable honesty (say, 13 beaches, or bartender)- then goes back to her being grateful for this life anyway. (she has to _find_ the empty beach or _buy_ an anonymous car but then it takes her back to her happy place on the earth she loves & w/ the people she loves…)
    and gratefully FOR ME, you can still go back to the beginning, to songs that sound like noir-films-turned-indie-pop/folk, and it remains as frozen in time as the music and film that inspired her in the first place, because it remains unreleased and un-studio-produced ;) ~ that’s sorta beside the point but it’s something that keeps her down to earth in my opinion, like she knows it’s just our special way of connecting to her.
    also glad you tied ethel cain’s work to lana’s, it’s verrry accurate and beautifully described. hayden silas is a genius and a beautiful writer

    Great job articulating all of this, i feel most people who truely felt moved by lana when she first came out, and have 'become' adults throughout her career also have similar spiritual beliefs or had similar spiritual development, we can see her work beyond the music, its a soul thing - i think its because we're the types of people to acknowledge and transmute the beauty in pain, something that lana completely encapsulates. Thank you for your work on these videos 🖤

    ethel cain has indicated that she does not want to be compared to lana in the past, but the inspiration is obvious. i initially started listening to her because someone referred to her as ldr’s “goth little sister” and i completely agree. she is far more like lana than she is like florence welch imo

    • @likeadiamondshiningintherough
      @likeadiamondshiningintherough 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I think they're both completely different. Why compare her to Florence Welch too? Also there's nothing "goth" about Ethel Cain. Look up actual goth music. Ethel is a mix of genres. Just because something is dark doesn't make it "goth".

    • @brookemcdermott3002
      @brookemcdermott3002 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Florence Welch was actually an inspiration and role model of Hayden Andehonia's (Ethel Cain). Vocally, there are similarities, but thematically, yes, Ethel is similar to Lana.

      @@brookemcdermott3002Yes I've seen them perform together. What I meant was I'm just a bit annoyed at the younger fans screaming about how Ethel is the new Lana. I just don't like comparing artists in that way. Lana has so many themes, even in her earliest work as Lizzy Grant, that I can't even imagine Ethel singing about. Maybe 1 or 2 of her newer songs are more "Ethel themed" but still not as dark. One of the reasons I can't relate to Ethel like a lot of her fans.

I feel sorrowful for those who will never open up to His embrace, and pray for them. Life is so beautifully made and complex, the human system,nature, space,dreams, they've all been created by a higher force, Him. God bless you, stay strong in your faith. Romanticizing abuse isnt cool though. Theres nothing pretty or glamorous about it. I think romanticizing too much can be dangerous to the point its not healthy. Dont get me wrong I'm a huge lana fan, but it upsets me that people think its cool to glorify such a miserable thing such as abuse.

      @Sagethis  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      Oh I definitely agree, not trying to say it’s okay to romanticize abuse, just saying that I DONT think Lana *was* doing that. To me she was just exposing & accepting what she goes through, instead of stigmatizing & trying to ignore it.
      I think accepting your situation can sometimes be the first real step in overcoming it.
      But I definitely agree! romanticizing everything and “wanting to be sad” is dangerous too, but just know that’s for sure not the point I was trying to make
