    - she had a "glow up"

I think what bugged me the most was Benedict's plot in this season. They threw away all of his artistic qualities, and he was basically just there to sleep around. As someone who is bi, I don't mind that he had his exploration, but there was no plot to his side of the story. I felt like they just used him to add more spice to the show because we were missing it from Polin.

Another thing Colin did that made me feel so icky was when he accused Penelope of trying to “trap him into the marriage” by “tricking him” into having intimate relations. If you rewatch the scene, he literally initiates and leads the entire thing - touches, removing clothing, etc - it’s all him. So for him to act like she tricked him with her feminine wiles when Colin was in control (and way more experienced) for the entire interaction is crazy. It reads very misogynistic to me and gave me the ick while watching.

i don't think he means that per se - Lady Whistledown announces the engagement the literal morning after Colin announces it to his family. By announcing it to the Ton, they're basically locked into this engagement. If no one knew, and then Colin found out, he could've at least tried to break the engagement or find some way to compromise it. But everyone knows now, so he can't. I think that's what he meant by his accusation. It wasn't that some random stranger announced the engagement before they could - Penelope did. To him, he's accusing her of doing it so that he can't back out without ruining his reputation.

I just googled this phrase and found this is a Yiddish phrase that started in the Americas (to use Bridgerton language). To be more precise, it started in New York at the turn of the 20th century, becoming more widespread in the 1930s. So why was the dialect person let go? Either because of money, or because the new show runner did not want to be constrained by more period-accurate language? I agree with you - the past seasons were not 100% period accurate, but they used terms that were more immersive for the world built in season 1 and 2...such as 'being with child,' versus season three's "We are expecting" (Kanthony) or "I am pregnant" (Prudence). S3 should have been Benedict's season, his character was developed enough to lead, Colin's was not. Could you imagine if in S3 we were shown scenes of Colin in Greece growing himself as man and writing to Penelope and Pen "ignoring" those letters out of spite. It would have been a perfect time to flesh out the tension in Eloise and Pen's love story as friends as well as showcase Colin's growth as a character. We needed more backstory with the leads and S3 could have been the place to get it, so that S4 could have been a strong Polin season.

I also think that it would have been much better if Colin hadn't been in London in season 3. You can see that Benedict's character didn't really have anything to do. But they could have focused on Benedict's story, Penelope could have her glow-up and find a few suitors and accept that she can't get Colin. Then in season 4 Colin would come back and see Penelope at a ball, dancing with different people and then he would slowly realize that he is missing something important. In addition, in season 3 they could have defused the whole Lady Whistledown issue and Eloise and Penelope slowly rebuild their friendship, which means that in season 4 Colin is not so angry at Lady Whistledown and all the pressure from the Queen is reduced.

During seasons 1&2, I was a hardcore Colin truther. Between Man Whores 1&2, Daphne’s seriousness, and Eloise’s yapping, it was nice to have a character who’s personality was just “happy to be here.” He really shined in the scenes where it was just the Bridgerton family all together, and you really got a sense that it was Colin who bridged the gap between the younger and older siblings. He also had some really great moments with Violet, where he became a confidant and a supporter of his mother who is usually written off by Anthony. He was a nice kid, very family oriented, growing up into an adult man with a much different conception of masculinity than his older brothers or Simon, and I was excited to see how they would handle that. Colin was a naturally wholesome person knee-deep in a society that thrives on scandal and ill-natured gossip. I was excited to see how he would navigate that world while staying true to himself and they just made him Man Whore #3. Can we not have a man who is just nice? As a treat???

    • @chetoo111
      @chetoo111 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +268

Honestly I thought his arc would be coming to realize his “thing” was that he really loved his family. Like Anthony the Vicount, Benedict the Artist, Eloise the Social Activist, and Colin the brother and son. He felt so much more defined by and attached to his role as a part of the family than his other siblings. Becoming a husband and father and having his own family would just be a natural extension of that. He tended to be overlooked and not taken seriously in his own family, so he could relate to that diminished feeling Penelope has. She is the wallflower and he feels like the “uninteresting” Bridgerton who people like but don’t take seriously.

People who love the character as funny, charming and sensitive tend to focus on the scenes with his family like Pall Mall, have you ever visited a farm, stumbling in with Violet who is drunk, being the brother not to abandon his mum at the ball and the tea with Benedict. My biggest complaint this season has been the lack of interaction between the Bridgertons and Colin as it is where he shines.

The book has its own weaknesses, but at least with the 10 year jump you can believe the ton are used to whistledowns ways and her identity would feel less scandalous at that point because she would have become so integrated in their society. You can also understand Penelope’s hesitance to give it up because…that’s 10 years of work, baby! That’s her legacy at this point after flailing in society as a spinster and really having nothing else to hold onto.
That was my one wish for them to change from the books. To not let the snooty ton know her identity. The bridgertons, lady Danbury and a clever agreement or arrangement with the queen seems a more practical solution. Let her have a little side hustle gathering tea for the queen or something.

im so mad about how they handled this season. Penelope and Colin were secondary characters in their own story, the time that should have been dedicated to them was occupied by Benedict's affairs, the mondrich family etc (the only one im not mad with is the choice to reboot Francesca and finally give her screentime, but still got too much in confront of polin).
literally polin was not fully shown. no flashbacks, no true moments of longing between them like the one that Daphne and Anthony had with their partners. nothing.
colin fell immediately, after the years pen spent pining over him. like ☠️ for real? is that easy? one kiss and you realize you love her (then immediately he ask her to marry him)?
everything was rushed, everyone was washed out.
    so disappointing.
(pros: portia/pen relationship, eloise and pen mending their friendship, francesca)

They had very similar screen time as the leads in S1 and S2. Benedict’s FWB storyline had the same screen time within a minute of Anthony’s Sienna storyline on S1.
This is a streaming show, they don’t have the same time restraints as network tv. Taking time away from other characters does not mean Polin would’ve gotten more time.
Also this story was not rushed at all, it’s been building since S1E1. In the past seasons we got all of Penelope’s longing looks at Colin and part 1 we got his of Penelope. My dude was in tears seeing her dance with another man and was grappling with intense jealousy while realizing he has feelings for his best friend.
Then we got even more angsty longing looks after he discovered LW. Colin holds his less than cheerful emotions and insecurities close to his heart so a lot of his character arch is internal while Pen’s problem is she’s not confident to be herself with others and limits the extent of her personality to writing so we see her growth externally. Luke and Nicola both depicted their characters’ arcs brilliantly. I’ve never been this blown away by the subtleties of portraying a character with use of eyes, brows, mouth, and hands as I am by Luke this season. You can literally see Colin’s thoughts and feelings so clearly spelled out on his face.
Honestly on rewatch from beginning to end it feels more complete than watching each half separately and not at all like they were secondary characters.

It’s because of the writing. They’re “telling” that they love each other, telling things happening, but not “showing” them. It’s an onslaught of new information being fed by dialogue and not by action or passage of time.
We didn’t get to see Colin & Pen have romance throughout S1-S3, we get to see them “talk” about that romance and then they finally revealed that they loved each other for S3 and that’s that. That’s why it felt so empty.
Also, we got too much new plot lines (this is my problem in S2 as well since we didn’t get to know Kate’s background in India that well) and new plot being built for future seasons. I get it that it’s an ensemble show but you have to have focus or else the whole story will be muddled.

What I hated was how they destroyed the characters. Colin was more of a golden retriever, not a Casanova. I think what they ruined was trying to make Penelope and Colin seem to have more "chemistry" in a sexual context, which was so incorrect. Colin being the golden retriever gentleman he was, and not a combination of his brothers and his brother-in-law, the Duke. Not to mention they destroyed Penelope by trying to make her too sexualized rather than being accepted for who she originally was as she is.

I actually didn't hate Penelope being the one to ask for a kiss etc because i think her real arc is one of bravery - while it is good that she found power in Lady Whistledown, it sprang largely from spite and cowardice. Not telling Colin her feelings was cowardly - telling him her feelings is brave and while it would feel good for her to be told first, it doesn't help her character because there's no outward action. The problem is that, to the audience, Colin is utterly unworthy of her adoration. His 'glowup' looks silly and he's neither nice nor interesting enough. Honestly, I think they should've made him a liar like Pen about his travels - two people hiding their inward lives etc.
Absolutely agree about Pen not being able to continue as Whistledown - who will come to her with REAL information?? Is she hiring spies?? What they should've done is gotten her and Colin to open a paper together. She can talk about regular, non clandestine, gossip and he can talk about travel.

I was fine with them not being intimate, but sleeping on the couch? Seriously.
I would much more preferred that they reversed a certain scene from the book and have Pen say "stay". Then when he hesitates she can say they don't need to do anything but she wants him to stay. Colin oblige, they hug emotionally and go to bed. The scene then cuts to an overshoot of them asleep in a tight embrace. Next scene Penelope wakes up and he is not there. When she opens the door to the study, he is sitting on the chaise long and ponders. Then the plot continues as it did.
Another tiny thing I would add, was when Pen tells Colin she will have the Cressida issue solved her way and sits down to write letters to the queen and Violet, all we needed to see was Colin asking "tell me what to do, I'll support you the way you want me to". Two seconds but it would show the viewers that he was in on the plan, he talked to his mother after she got the letter as they agreed to do together, and he was standing at the back not interfering the final reveal because this is how they agreed to have it together. She wanted to do it alone, and he gave her what she needed.

agree - I commented on another subthread that Colin should have read her letters after the willow tree (essentially a Pen rejection - let's keep our distance) and taken them to his bedroom - flashbacks, fantasize, do whatever you do when you desire someone you can't have... when he couldn't speak at the ball and she went to dance with debling, Then instead of the second brothel scene (unnecessary because Colin isn't wavering over wanting her...) he should have gone to her again like the first kiss with letters in his hands.... "this looks like love" and Pen should push that away a bit (dismiss as childhood infatuation - something to make it look like the timing is off). I love the carraige scene so I don't know how you smooth that over unless you make Colin not really lay it all on the line with the letters. Maybe Colin could have actually asked Pen for help with his writing to get a reason to be near her. Or even better, deliver letters back and forth across the street with edits and little bits of flirting (Pen isn't sure what it is and dismisses it due to past pain...) Tne. bottom line is if that first kiss was the "that's it, I'm hooked on Pen" moment, we needed to see him go back through the evidence, relive the moments, and work his way toward her, not just because Debling is about to scoop her up in record time.

It's frustrating because after watching that scene, they had good material that was edited and paced so so poorly. And it's frustrating because this season did have some nice emotional nuances, but it was run to the ground by smaller, poorly supervised choices. Splitting this season into TWO PARTS was one of the “icks” for this season. They could have just released it as one instead of this. The departure of Chris Van Dusen definately was felt. The way they disposed characters and treated our characters was hastely produced and did not give the grace and consistency in which the characters needed.

You're so on point with this. I feel like I've change the feature of my face by how much I cringe watching this season. The love story was secondary to the "unmasking of whistledown", and even that wasn't satisfying. Give me the yearning, tension and romance we got from the previous seasons.

The one thing Brigerton is consistent in is the Brigerton family relationship, excellent sibling banter, I honestly watch the show for the Brigerton as a family and not their romances 🙈

Also the queen's logic of "She must be a Brigerton" makes no sense because of how the show is structure. It's shown that Cressida's paper is delivered and minutes later the real Wiseldown paper arrives, wich means both were published at roughly the same time, so there is no way that Wiseldown would be able to know that Cressida planed to publish Bridgerton slander. The queen just guessed that Wiseldown knew what Cressida plan to published and decided to write to protect the Bridgerton, wich also isn't what happend, Penolope just didn't want Cressida to take credit, the reputation of the Brigerton did not matter in her decision.

I wish they kept Pen and Colin for the last season. That way, they could've kept both Penelope's spinster status from the books, which was rather important, and kept the Whistledown plot device longer. Also it would've given them more time to establish the friendship.

there are some theories that changing Showrunners for S3 (and S4) is the reason why the season felt so off. Either way, there’s definitely a disconnect between S1-2 and S3, it’s lost its magic sadly

I actually forgot Collin had traveled before, so I thought it made sense that he was changed but I was waiting for Collin to reveal that he was just acting and he was still kind of silly/“innocent” and him being a virgin, that he pretended he’d slept with someone abroad, maybe he’d read/wrote stories about this (like he did) and just played that character irl.

The show runner Jess Brownell said in an interview that this season was more like a rom-com, hence the over the top costumes. My first thought was oh so only the tall, skinny, stereotypically attractive couples get a romance, but the big girl gets a rom-com... My eyes rolled so hard at that.
