Eloise completely dismissing Cressida’s forced marriage to Lord Grier is so out of character for someone who has pretty strong feelings about women’s sexuality rights
I hate to say it, but the show left me with the impression that Colin is more in love with the validation he gets from Penelope more than he is in love with Pen herself.
@amira4465 yeah, plus his apology for the "i would never court Penelope" speil was all about how much he appreciates her for how she makes him feel, like, okay?? Why did you humiliate her in the first place then if you appreciate her that much?

@@mcheesey123Because he was upset..she lied to him on multiple occasions and she had every chance to tell him about being LW. he even told her straight up "I knew something was wrong and I thought I was the problem". For once the show is showing how emotions work and everyone says they can't feel it?? Is everyone okay??
The reasons Colin fell for Pen were: - she had a "glow up" - she told him he's a good writer The build-up from frendship to romance was abrupt and it was confusing to see him be so in love with her all of a sudden
I think what bugged me the most was Benedict's plot in this season. They threw away all of his artistic qualities, and he was basically just there to sleep around. As someone who is bi, I don't mind that he had his exploration, but there was no plot to his side of the story. I felt like they just used him to add more spice to the show because we were missing it from Polin.
Yeah, I’m all for inclusive characters, but it usually seems like their orientation is the only defining characteristic 🫤 Schitt’s Creek was such a perfect show, bc every character was real and fleshed out. Their relationships had depth and heart. It wasn’t all abt “we’re doing a gay love story” 🤦🏼♀️
yes! plus he had such chemistry with the model last season… (although i must admit i was satisfied knowing my inkling about him since my first watching was right)
@@jesathousandtimesjes that confused me so much too! If I'm being generous, maybe they're trying to show that Benedict is exploring who he is (in many ways), and perhaps he doesn't consider himself to be into art right now because he's confused about what he really wants?
@@someguitarphreak yeah all I can think is that he's upset his brother bought his way into art school so he gave it up and said nothing to his brother about it. Which I'm pretty sure is the writers just postponing that part of his story because they want to address it in another season.... but you can't just put his character on pause! As OP said, they're only developing his sexuality and nothing else. It's poor writing.
I was so upset that every "special" moment Penelope got ended up ruined somehow. Her glow-up dress got destroyed, her proposal from Lord Debling got interrupted, her engagement party was spoiled (by multiple people!!), her wedding breakfast was ruined by the queen crashing it with the Lady Whistledown ultimatum, her wedding night was ruined by Colin being a pouty little boy...I was so heartbroken for her. I just wanted her to have ONE good time. Colin owes her flawless birthday parties for the rest of her life.
She cried/was upset in nearly every episode. It was too much. In Part II, I wanted to scream at the screen because she kept apologizing and never seemed to stand up for herself.
What Eloise and Cressida did on her engagement night was unforgivable! I guess Eloise was paying Pen back for ruining her reputation. But nit when your nemesis engagement is also the engagement of the brother you claim to love.
Part of the appeal of the romance genre to women is the fact that the male love interests are devoted to a fantastical degree. They lost that element with Polin this season unfortunately, which is why a lot of fans are rolling their eyes at it. Like seriously, what girl wants to fantasize about having to beg a man to love her? We have enough of that in real life thank you very much
They only accomplished this with Kanthony 🫠 every interspersed scene of them showing how obsessed Anthony is with his wife was like a breath of fresh air
I think the challenge would've been to be different, not top, season 2. Everyone agrees there's no topping Kanthony, because their character arcs were so in line with who they are at their core. And then the producers go do Season 3🙄
Don't think 'everyone' agrees because there are others who still prefer s1 and even more that think QC is the tip tier for all of Bridgerton tv content!
I was waiting for the flashback when Penelope said they met as children. Like, Penelope is the only Bridgerton partner that Lord Bridgerton (their dad) has met and they couldn't even give us that! It would have been a nice build up to the story.
Honestly I thought it was cuter that Colin recalls it. The fact that a young Colin made the effort to commit it to memory in detail shows how much and how long he has cared for Penelope even if he was unaware of the depth of his affections. Also the logistics of casting a young Colin and Pen then having a CHILD fall from a horse, yeah no that doesn’t sound safe or reasonable to me.
@@FifthAveAtFive they could have changed that 'falling' scene to something else. You know, just like how the new showrunner changed major things from the book. Like Michael's gender for example, just to make it her personal fanfiction.
Another thing Colin did that made me feel so icky was when he accused Penelope of trying to “trap him into the marriage” by “tricking him” into having intimate relations. If you rewatch the scene, he literally initiates and leads the entire thing - touches, removing clothing, etc - it’s all him. So for him to act like she tricked him with her feminine wiles when Colin was in control (and way more experienced) for the entire interaction is crazy. It reads very misogynistic to me and gave me the ick while watching.
This where 1 needs to remember that this is the 2nd time Colin got LIED to and that Marina tried to baby trap Colin. In no way did Colin believe that was the case but he feared Pen was just using him.
@@sara1coco this is it! Media literacy is at an all time low these days. Bridgerton has its faults but some of the things people are fixated upon seem to be standard character flaws lol.
@@henrywayne5724 media literacy is a fair call but if the media is making itself difficult to be read, it gets complicated. I don't think Colin's s1 arc is appropriately brought up and called back in a way that makes such a reaction feel "good" narratively.
i don't think he means that per se - Lady Whistledown announces the engagement the literal morning after Colin announces it to his family. By announcing it to the Ton, they're basically locked into this engagement. If no one knew, and then Colin found out, he could've at least tried to break the engagement or find some way to compromise it. But everyone knows now, so he can't. I think that's what he meant by his accusation. It wasn't that some random stranger announced the engagement before they could - Penelope did. To him, he's accusing her of doing it so that he can't back out without ruining his reputation.
I also heard that the new showrunner got rid of the dialect coach for this season. That may have caused some of the dialogue to sound more modern/basic even if the writing was the same.
@@kenzieb1615ooh!! that explains a lot, the dialogue is too modern for me, what i liked about this series was the dialogue and costumes, but now it just looks so modern and not appealing to me at all
@@illenagus Like when Anthony said "What am I? Chopped liver?" - that was funny but completely jarring. I just googled this phrase and found this is a Yiddish phrase that started in the Americas (to use Bridgerton language). To be more precise, it started in New York at the turn of the 20th century, becoming more widespread in the 1930s. So why was the dialect person let go? Either because of money, or because the new show runner did not want to be constrained by more period-accurate language? I agree with you - the past seasons were not 100% period accurate, but they used terms that were more immersive for the world built in season 1 and 2...such as 'being with child,' versus season three's "We are expecting" (Kanthony) or "I am pregnant" (Prudence). Seems like nit-picking but little things add up. Chopped liver and mesh gloves and excessive flowers from Michael's, oh my!
it just felt so EMPTY. Like they were going through the motions and hitting all the typical bridgerton 'beats' or whatever but there was no emotion or heart involved lol.
she show runners and coustime designers changes things up on them so much it must be hard for them to "get into" their characters inside a proper built world. leads to emotional slated performances
i wish they had kept fun-loving and goofy colin. that could’ve been such a breath of fresh air since we haven’t had that in a male lead yet. and honestly what’s more attractive than a good sense of humour? just look at benedict, there’s a reason why he’s a fan favourite.
i think that the showrunners thought that since Benedict is a fan favorite because of his goofiness, he’s the only one that can embody that when if you really think about it, Colin is the extension between the older & younger siblings both having a serious and goofy personality.
Yeah I hate that they made Colin into a rake this season. Why does every male character have to be a rake and every female character have to be a virginal girl who nobody else is that interested in
The WAYYYY they gave Cressida one of the best character development (in such a short time but effectively) just for her to get the worst ending????? WHYYY she could’ve been zuko of the show and become an ally AND ELOISE NOT GIVING A FUCK ABOUT THE FORCED MARRIAGE OF HER FRIEND (even if she lowkey pretended wouldn’t her morals still make her care???)
To be fair, the writers hinted in an interview that her story wasn't over (they planned to have her mother leave her father and come with her to the countryside originally, but they felt it would be too final and they wouldn't have any room to continue her story later on). So luckily it's only temporary =)
Honestly I'm frustrated by Debling's disappearance-- I thought that it was getting setup that he and Cressida would marry, which would allow her a lot of personal freedom, which her story seemed to be focused on. I was super confused when he didn't pop up again when Cressida's plot intensified--- like, wasn't he interested in her too (although less than Penelope)? They setup this potential marriage with lots of time away, implied freedom to host social events and run a household, and then just... have that disappear so that Cressida can be even more desperate for marriage
It felt really mean spirited, I was hoping he would turn round and marry Cressida to spite Penelope but then we's see their chemistry and that they work as couple better, there seemed like a lot of build up for him to literally disappear out of thin air and Cressida to just embarrass herself over and over again
thematically it would have made a ton of sense. cressida’s costumes were so outlandish this season because they wanted to make her like a bird in a cage. lord debling’s whole character is that he loves animals and protects birds specifically. it was RIGHT THERE😭😭
Someone said that this season was too much Grey's anatomy and not enough Pride and Prejudice and I wholeheartedly agree. There was too much drama and not enough romance/sweet&cute/love&vibes. And Polin were reduced to side characters in their own season, especially in the latter half.
S3 should have been Benedict's season, his character was developed enough to lead, Colin's was not. Could you imagine if in S3 we were shown scenes of Colin in Greece growing himself as man and writing to Penelope and Pen "ignoring" those letters out of spite. It would have been a perfect time to flesh out the tension in Eloise and Pen's love story as friends as well as showcase Colin's growth as a character. We needed more backstory with the leads and S3 could have been the place to get it, so that S4 could have been a strong Polin season.
I also think that it would have been much better if Colin hadn't been in London in season 3. You can see that Benedict's character didn't really have anything to do. But they could have focused on Benedict's story, Penelope could have her glow-up and find a few suitors and accept that she can't get Colin. Then in season 4 Colin would come back and see Penelope at a ball, dancing with different people and then he would slowly realize that he is missing something important. In addition, in season 3 they could have defused the whole Lady Whistledown issue and Eloise and Penelope slowly rebuild their friendship, which means that in season 4 Colin is not so angry at Lady Whistledown and all the pressure from the Queen is reduced.
Honestly? They did Cressida so dirty at the end. She was so desperate to escape her situation, and all season long I was just asking for somebody to extend a helping hand to her.
They treated her like a villain when she wouldn't have had to be one if a) Eloise was a good friend by listening and supporting her despite their differences b) she received any type of allyship from Whistledown to make her more desirable who should take the high road and HELPED WOMEN c) she hung out with the Bridgertons more and learned how to be a better person overall. The women in this show are all subject to this society and rules. I would've liked to see more empathy between the girlies rather than infighting
If only her aunt lived in the Scottish Highlands instead of Wales, so I could believe the show was setting Eloise and Cressida to reunite outside of society
All i was thinking was why make us root for her all of a sudden to then break her character growth and fck her over at the end. It felt like it was done for the sake of having more sideplots and more drama.
I know right? why not give Cressida a happy ending? she was desperate and she was running out of options, I think they could have redeemed her by marrying her to Lord Debling, since she is the villain maybe giving her a "love story" was too much, but at least a decent husband? poor Cressida :(
During seasons 1&2, I was a hardcore Colin truther. Between Man Whores 1&2, Daphne’s seriousness, and Eloise’s yapping, it was nice to have a character who’s personality was just “happy to be here.” He really shined in the scenes where it was just the Bridgerton family all together, and you really got a sense that it was Colin who bridged the gap between the younger and older siblings. He also had some really great moments with Violet, where he became a confidant and a supporter of his mother who is usually written off by Anthony. He was a nice kid, very family oriented, growing up into an adult man with a much different conception of masculinity than his older brothers or Simon, and I was excited to see how they would handle that. Colin was a naturally wholesome person knee-deep in a society that thrives on scandal and ill-natured gossip. I was excited to see how he would navigate that world while staying true to himself and they just made him Man Whore #3. Can we not have a man who is just nice? As a treat???
Honestly I thought his arc would be coming to realize his “thing” was that he really loved his family. Like Anthony the Vicount, Benedict the Artist, Eloise the Social Activist, and Colin the brother and son. He felt so much more defined by and attached to his role as a part of the family than his other siblings. Becoming a husband and father and having his own family would just be a natural extension of that. He tended to be overlooked and not taken seriously in his own family, so he could relate to that diminished feeling Penelope has. She is the wallflower and he feels like the “uninteresting” Bridgerton who people like but don’t take seriously.
💯this! People who love the character as funny, charming and sensitive tend to focus on the scenes with his family like Pall Mall, have you ever visited a farm, stumbling in with Violet who is drunk, being the brother not to abandon his mum at the ball and the tea with Benedict. My biggest complaint this season has been the lack of interaction between the Bridgertons and Colin as it is where he shines.
Yea that was really sad. I don't get why shows seem to want to disappoint us rather than give us a happy ending. Same reason I stopped watching Walking Dead.
Also it was so unclear if the things Lady Whistledown writes, are actually scandalous, like often there are no consequences to seemingly scandalous relevations.. then again she is hunted by the queen.. buuut then when she reveals herself she doesnt have an angry mob chasing her? Like decide!!
In other seasons it always seemed like the queens whistledown obsession was because she was bored and secretly loved having a rival it made no sense that this was suddenly a high stakes manhunt I thought it would have been better ending for Pen to confess secretly to the Queen. She would still get the Queen/Cressida off her back without blowing the secret
The revelation in the book also doesn't have a mob chasing her. At least in the show, they had some heartfelt confessions after that, so that part was done better in the show.
I remember being so confused by that scene. Somewhere online there a clip of Nicola implying that the reason Penelope didn’t just move away is because she was too distracted ogling Colin’s handsome and manly arms. Personally I wouldn’t have ever guess that’s what they were going for, and I guess I’m not alone. Really drives home how much the poor editing drags this season down.
@@dragonsheen3049 and something about the way the men rushed in to help was so comical. Idkw but it felt so stiff and awkward. Probably the direction? The editing? It was funny as shit and I got secondhand embarrassment watching it. 😂
The reason Queen Charlotte wears 30 year old fashion trends is because she wants George to be able to recognize her given his dementia. It's actually very touching. Every dress is a declaration of love.
The real Queen Charlotte wore outdated dresses because she despised the fashions of the times so she also made her court dress in the same fashions as her
@@annemariecronen9096 Queen Charlotte wore 18th-century fashion at court because of her and George's belief it was much more appropriate for the formality at court. There are portraits of Queen Charlotte wearing the Regency fashion and it was documented that she wore it in private.
omg the 'why was she able to just keep publishing' really irked me too, like the rest of the season was incredibly bland and often nonsensical but that part was the cherry on top- no one would fucking say things in her presence again!! they'll just lie now!! imo she shouldn't have revealed herself at all, she should've had a private conversation with the queen and lady danbury to explain why it wouldn't make sense/why it would kill the game and intrigue
Yeah. In the book, it made sense because she'd been doing it for over a decade and revealed herself and stopped publishing... But why would she be able to find out anything while being in the light?
@@EvaReyRubioyessss. mystique was how she had power. I’m confused in the epilogue if she still writes gossip, because…not likely! Everyone will be adjusting their behaviour around her from now on. The book has its own weaknesses, but at least with the 10 year jump you can believe the ton are used to whistledowns ways and her identity would feel less scandalous at that point because she would have become so integrated in their society. You can also understand Penelope’s hesitance to give it up because…that’s 10 years of work, baby! That’s her legacy at this point after flailing in society as a spinster and really having nothing else to hold onto. That was my one wish for them to change from the books. To not let the snooty ton know her identity. The bridgertons, lady Danbury and a clever agreement or arrangement with the queen seems a more practical solution. Let her have a little side hustle gathering tea for the queen or something.
I kinda took it when she said she intends to aim her quill more responsibly to mean she would write about other things from now on? What idk, maybe introspections, world events, travels, idk
Exactly. Cressida became an even worse character this season, not just because of the redemption bait but because she discovered her identity in such an idiotic way.
I totally agree, Penelope and Colin's story tended to be overshadowed by more interesting characters, such as Francesca and John. Also, they acted like Benedict had never had an interest in art.
He had a throwaway line when he was with that lady and the guy (don't remember their names), he's asked about his interests and if he likes art, which he immediately denied. I'm guessing they want him to have quit art after finding out that Anthony bought him the place at that art academy in season 2? I hope they'll use that for his season - imagine he's so mesmerized by his love interest that he can't help but return to painting. Alas, they really should've shown his art block/life crisis more instead of having him spend a whole episode in a threesome lol
we are NOT going to pretend francesca and john overshadowed them. you can say penelope and colin's storyline had issues with being the main storyline. but you can't say they were overshadowed especially by john and francesca's storyline 💀💀
6:10 I 1000% agree with you. Seeing Benedict having threesomes while his family members were being blackmailed just annoyed me, and made him feel like such an unserious character. Showing Benedict's story in S3, would've helped the showrunners avoid that while giving Penelope and Colin more room to breath ahead of their season.
It was also so funny (in a bad way) how he left the wedding party for the threesome, the party ended, the main plot moved to the next day and we were still having threesome scenes! And it's not that it was a long affair, it was just edited like shit and shoehorned in-between scenes where it didn't fit lmao.
I skipped all of his part with the treesomes, disappointed how they always want to push their agenda instead of keeping the charm of authentic romance story. Gratuitous sex becoming the norm is so unappealing
FR. My fave part is when Benedict directly said to the blonde lady(forgot her name lol) that he "didn't care for him, he could be anyone" directed at the man that he went full homo with for the first time. Like, there's nothing more romantic than putting a worthless scene of 3 randos going at it, and they apparently don't even give a shièt about each other and have nothing more going on than "I'm bored, these 2 people are alive and willing". How can you "not care" about the man that supposedly you were so attracted to that you were willing to challenge your limits? 10\10 queer representation lol
goes to show that gender essentialism is harmful to the creation of appealing artwork and to imply that men can’t understand women actually contributes to our own gender alienation!
I think my biggest gripe is that there was not enough screen time focusing on the development of the main couple and that the show runners completely misunderstood and gave Colin the wrong character archetype. i wanted goofy silly colin and instead we got mewing and the ick😭
it’s so funny how in s1 anthony was so annoying and they managed to make him swoon worthy in s2 and for some reason decided to do the exact opposite to collin
@@Me-vn3gzone big factor atleast in my opinion is that Jonathon Bailey is such a good actor way better than Luke Newton. That he effectively convinces us audience to be annoyed with Anthony and then slowly fall in love with Anthony. His eyes are very expressive. Sadly Luke’s acting is not that effective
Honestly, in most seasons. Pen coming to Eloise at night crying when she betrayed Marina in favor of Colin. Or Eloise finding out about Lady Whistledown... Especially their friendship breakup sticked with me the most.
Definitely. I was obsessed with their every interaction. You could tell how much they yearned to be close again but couldn't get past their conflict even though they so desperately wish they could. Like that was giving more Period Piece romance than Colin and Pen
I’m surprised you didn’t mention much of the storyline between Francesca and Lord Kilmartin! Their dynamic intrigued me when seen through the lens of neurodivergence. I read some interpretations online of people saying that Francesca felt autistically-coded with her special interest in music, love of quiet, and general reserved social nature. Not sure if this was meant to be the case but I do appreciate the scene between her and Violet where Violet expresses appreciation for Francesca and John demonstrating a love that was unique to them, validating it even if it was different from when Violet fell in love
Then they take all that and throw it out the window and make her have love at first sight and fumble over her speech when she meets mikayla who is a replacement to Michael in the books.
@@daashazireael6613 Francesca's reaction to seeing Michaela does not negate the unique love she has with John. You can love and express love for people in different ways. Which btw, Francesca is not even there yet with Michaela. Francesca and John live a life together before he sadly passes. I believe that will still be depicted in its entirety over the next few seasons (or at least I hope so given the time the spent developing Francesca and John this season). I think the most powerful thing about Francesca's eventual season will be seeing her love, experience loss, and still love again in ways that may be different but still true.
And I think it's also additionally great that we will be seeing two types of love depicted with a character who is coded as neurodivergent and also bisexual.

Bridgerton should be more BBC, less CW. They're missing the point of why it became so popular in the first place. The chase, the longing... All of those felt short and lacking.
The lack of built up of relationship between collin and penelope made me feel no sensuality between their intimate scene. It seemed for the sake of it.
This was such a huge problem throughout the whole season. The lack of emotional development within the main relationship was practically non existent. They just SAY they love each other and we’re supposed to figure out why. The shoehorned smut all around really exacerbated the problem by making it more apparent how there was no substance this season
@@bandanarathore which speaks more to ur relationship with the ship. I dont get feeling bad for the actors given it obviously wasn’t to no avail if other people still enjoy the dynamic
Cressida wasn't exactly a villain before but she should be one now. Constantly overlooked and ridiculed by her parents and society and even let down by her one friend? For trying to get out of an abusive home?? You bet I would be coming back to con everybody out of their titles, lands and whatever else honestly.
It honestly felt rushed, I think dividing up the season wasn't really a good idea. i would have liked to see more of them actually burning for each other before colin just decides to marry her after one kiss that apparently is all it takes to make him fall in love??
I didn’t care for Polin, but I kinda took it the same way when Eloise figured out Pen was lady whistledown. All Eloise had to do was actually listen to Penelope speak. Both Eloise and Colin were too self centered and self involved in their relationships with Penelope. It’s only when they actually paid attention to her that the pieces started to fall in place. That’s what I imagine the kiss did. It just doesn’t do much because, it’s not all that romantic. Like congratulations loser, you’ve finally noticed how great Pen is! You finally noticed that she is in fact a woman!
im so mad about how they handled this season. Penelope and Colin were secondary characters in their own story, the time that should have been dedicated to them was occupied by Benedict's affairs, the mondrich family etc (the only one im not mad with is the choice to reboot Francesca and finally give her screentime, but still got too much in confront of polin). literally polin was not fully shown. no flashbacks, no true moments of longing between them like the one that Daphne and Anthony had with their partners. nothing. colin fell immediately, after the years pen spent pining over him. like ☠️ for real? is that easy? one kiss and you realize you love her (then immediately he ask her to marry him)? everything was rushed, everyone was washed out. so disappointing. (pros: portia/pen relationship, eloise and pen mending their friendship, francesca)
But the thing is that even with limited screentime the Francesca and John story was compelling, interesting, brought emotions. Polin? Zero. Nada. No feels whatsoever. Even Pen and Eloise brought more emotions this season.
Portia and Pen too, I felt more than with Polin (but would have liked mroe though... Would have liked more depth more exploration of Pen and her mother. Felt rushed... but then again, even with the rusbing and limited screentime it still was better than the Polin.)
They had very similar screen time as the leads in S1 and S2. Benedict’s FWB storyline had the same screen time within a minute of Anthony’s Sienna storyline on S1. This is a streaming show, they don’t have the same time restraints as network tv. Taking time away from other characters does not mean Polin would’ve gotten more time. Also this story was not rushed at all, it’s been building since S1E1. In the past seasons we got all of Penelope’s longing looks at Colin and part 1 we got his of Penelope. My dude was in tears seeing her dance with another man and was grappling with intense jealousy while realizing he has feelings for his best friend. Then we got even more angsty longing looks after he discovered LW. Colin holds his less than cheerful emotions and insecurities close to his heart so a lot of his character arch is internal while Pen’s problem is she’s not confident to be herself with others and limits the extent of her personality to writing so we see her growth externally. Luke and Nicola both depicted their characters’ arcs brilliantly. I’ve never been this blown away by the subtleties of portraying a character with use of eyes, brows, mouth, and hands as I am by Luke this season. You can literally see Colin’s thoughts and feelings so clearly spelled out on his face. Honestly on rewatch from beginning to end it feels more complete than watching each half separately and not at all like they were secondary characters.
He was kind of giving Gilderoy Lockhart, I don't know how to explain it but the thumbnail just gave me the words for what I've been thinking this whole time
the showrunner who took over clearly did not have faith the audience would be invested in polin as a central plot. the previous one teed their relationship up perfectly for her to pull it off too
@@arianamitchell7050 yes! Those scenes of the Mondriches could have been removed to add more Polin screentime. Seriously, nobody asked for them. They were great during Season 1, but why they gotta drag their storylines when they werent even in the book!
I read that there were 2 directors this season, one for part one and one for part two. The director for part 2 wanted to focus more on Francesca than on Polin, that plus putting both parts together probably made the process wonky (plus having to put a cliffhanger in the middle and any production problems they may have had after coming back from the strike)
I hated the third season so much that after finishing it I rewatched the first season and realized that I didn't hate Colin in the first season. In fact, I felt sympathy for him. While I liked the first season and loved the second, it's sad to see Bridgerton miss the opportunity to create a sweet male lead for the first time. I think maybe that's why I loved John's character, even with little screen time. He is so sweet and kind.
Yes!!! When they reintroduced him as this like suave charming leading man type i was kind of disappointed! Partially bc it was out of character, and partially bc we've already had that! Bring back sweet dork colin! I want to see different romances with different kinds of people, including sweet dorks!
Agreed. I was looking fwd to sweet Colin. Even hoped they might keep him a virgin, which seemed more true to his character based on what they'd shown in S1 and S2
I hated that the “danger” of being LW and getting caught was erased. The lack of fear/danger/consequences of being found out completely undermines the “Penelope aired out Eloise’s dirty laundry to protect her” plot point. I felt like Eloise just eventually came around without understanding why Pen did what she did.
Kanthony was so good bc it was the perfect example of "show dont tell" with the way they looked at each other or like basically sniffed each other every time they got close lol and the camera shots made it obvious to the audience that they had feelings for each other, even if Kate and Anthony hadn't realised it themselves yet. Whereas with Polin, the audience is just told of their childhood friendship which we see none of, and is told that they love each other despite the relationship still feeling very one-sided.
ALSO that Anthony WAS VULNERABLE about those feelings after, HE TOLD her and he couldn’t stop himself from telling her all of it, it felt passionate it felt REAL. LOVE is uncontrollable
It’s because of the writing. They’re “telling” that they love each other, telling things happening, but not “showing” them. It’s an onslaught of new information being fed by dialogue and not by action or passage of time. We didn’t get to see Colin & Pen have romance throughout S1-S3, we get to see them “talk” about that romance and then they finally revealed that they loved each other for S3 and that’s that. That’s why it felt so empty. Also, we got too much new plot lines (this is my problem in S2 as well since we didn’t get to know Kate’s background in India that well) and new plot being built for future seasons. I get it that it’s an ensemble show but you have to have focus or else the whole story will be muddled.
@@gems3604 Their intimacy scene made me cringe so bad, the direction was so bad, the interactions so weird, I am pretty sure if you made the actors improvise it would have gone down better.
Im with you on Debling. He is a catch, especially for women in those days. Minted, wants a woman who likes to do her own thing (and will likely fund it), cares about her life too (he wanted a woman with her own passions BECAUSE he was concerned that his wife would be bored at home all the time with nothing to do with his lfiestyle), cares about animals and the environment.... if only penelope didnt love colin, debling would be perfect. He wouldnt have pressured her to abandon whistledown etc, he would most likely be fine knowing she was whistledown and completely stay out of the drama as long as maybe she toned down her scathing a little.... maybe this shows im getting older and love practicality also but penelope choosing Debling would also be her choosing herself rather than Colin. TEAM DEBLING
One of my favourite parts of this season was actually the development of the friendship between Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton! It was so satisfying to see a continuation of the events from the Queen Charlotte series. I gasped when Violet said she knew about Lady Danbury and her father and their whole last conversation in the season was so beautiful
I agree. Daphne became enamored with Simon at first because they did become very friendly, that’s why he even tells her about touching herself in that conversation outside. It’s why Violet and LD make such an effort in the first place, bc they see potential brewing. They also had so much more screen time to establish a friendship SHOWN to the viewer, not told. unfortunately Polin, my personal favorite couple bc i love Penelope, did not have this same effort, and viewers were TOLD about their friendship, not shown. i was very disappointed in S3, but at least it highlights the greatness of S2, S1, and QC.
Bro I HATE Daphne and Simon but all I could think about when Colin was “teaching” her was “Ain’t this almost the same damn plot of S1??? Didn’t they have some shit like this going on??” 💀💀
You totally hit the nail on the head when you said they “remolded” Colin to be what they thought women wanted out of a lead. I was frustrated with his “yassification” as you so aptly put it!! Also not to put another plug for historical inaccuracies BUT. Colin would not be appealing to the women of that era-he’s a third son, and didn’t even leave to travel to find his fortune, like so many third sons did. The women would not be chasing him!! He doesn’t have his own money or land to make him an attractive prospect!
@@mayruuh you’re so right! But it all would have come from Anthony, who as the eldest brother would have had entire control over the estate and all the money. I guess I should have said he wasn’t *independently* wealthy, and for most women, that was a huge risk.
Wrong, the show mentioned several times that Colin tried to be someone he isn't to fit into society's expectations, idk how some people didn't understand that
@@sara1coco but that really has nothing to do with what OP said. A 3rd son who hadn’t built up a career in the military or church or gone abroad and become a wealthy tea planter or something would not be a hot commodity. No expectations of great inheritance or title, and money only settled on him by generosity. Not a catch. That’s not about playing the type of man society expects, that’s just plain the way of the world at the time. It’s practicality. For example, Edward Ferrars being a kind of drifter with a sweet, honorable personality (he had to end up in the church because frankly he had no choice) didn’t make him a catch. Lucy Steele only wanted him for his inheritance, and when he lost it, she went right to his brother. Only Elinor wanted him for himself.
@@sara1coco Media literacy is dying apparently cause I am concerned this video completely over looked SO much dialogue from not only other characters but Colin himself saying he was trying to be something he wasn't...like this is a horrid take.
29:00 i honestly don't know why they chose that India plotline for Kate and Anthony because both the actors have constantly said in the press that they'll always come back for their scenes if they're asked. I wish they keep getting small scenes here and there because I love them so badddd but with the classic 1-2 year gap that Bridgerton production is obsessed with, I don't know who we'll manage to see in the coming seasons 💀
the thing is i'm sure the actors would like to come back -- as in they love the show and they love the people they work with. however, their star power rose significantly after bridgerton. they were cheaper to hire when they were relative unknowns, but now they're worth way more and can ask for higher pay (and rightfully so). i hope netflix is willing to pay them what they're worth considering the insane amount of views and money they raked in with season 2. it's what they deserve
I don’t understand choosing India either as that is not a short distance by boat Kate is pregnant so how likely is it that she would be giving birth on a boat also “baby knows its heritage” is good but newborns won’t remember it? So why?
Also, what I think Colin could have done differently is asking Penelope why writing as Lady Whistledown was so important to her. He thought he was doing the right thing for his family by asking her to stop, but he never once asked her why it was so important to her. The answer to that would have unlocked a lot of other answers for him too. He definitely has lots of growing up to do as a person and so does every other character in this show, quite frankly
I hated how everyone that was supposed to love her was 💩-ing on her. Her best friend, who was a "fan" of Lady Whistledown acted so immature, and the love of her life didn't admire her for her talent. She deserved better. I honestly had to pause it because their attitude towards Penelope was so cringe.
@@Hello.Meditate I understood where their anger came from (who wouldn't be angry?) but they just kept beating a dead horse! She apologized/was crying during almost every episode this season. Her hyperventilating really did it for me, everyone just pissed me off after that. I do wish she stood up for herself more. They also should've talked about Eloise's scandal and Marina in more depth. Instead, it was just YOU DID THAT and Pen saying I KNOW! I'M TERRIBLE! I'M SORRY! And I wish Eloise realized Penelope legit CATERED Whistledown to Eloise's opinions and critiques. She obviously valued Eloise's opinion more than anyone's.
I wish that the sweet goofy Colin of seasons 1 and 2 peeked through more. And that there had been a little more focus on how much he had missed Penelope's letters. Like if the "roguish cad" bit had dropped periodically when he saw her, showing him to be more comfortable around her, that would have really helped with the "friends to lovers" vibe.
Have you watched queen charlotte? It's theorized the queen still dresses like that because she doesn't want king George to get confused as why she's dressed like that... since he was a mental issue
I haven’t, but even so she’s the queen and she would’ve set the fashion trends of the time so if she was still wearing 1770s clothing in 1810 then so would everyone else in her court
@littlerabbit is correct. But court fashion is super ridic and would have probably killed the sex vibe. Lol. Because also, powdered wigs for the Bridgerton bros lol
I agreed with basically everything you said. But eloise's "makeover" did make sense to me. She was trying to blend in to make new friends (girls). She still hates the marriage mart, and useless suitors. But she was trying to fit in so she could have more friends others than Penelope. Thats why she was reading Emma, and her fashion tastes have been influenced by Cressida, who was nice to her in the country.
yeah i agree! i saw her “makeover” as more of an attempt to understand the women around her instead of just writing them off. So still being uninterested in marriage is just part of who she is; she’s not interested in it. Also, the season does make it clear that she is struggling with this new “conformity” as mina calls it. So, even if she was determined to conform, it’s still a struggle for her.
So true about the flashback thing. I mean, they gave a lot of flashbacks in season 1 for the duke, had a flashback for Anthony when dad died. Why couldn't they give us a flashback for their first meeting. They always talk about how they first met, how Colin felt lonely during his travels, how Colin was a writer and was struggling etc. But whywas their no exposition regarding this at all. They always just talk about it but they never show us which makes the audience have a lack of connection to this side to them.
Claudia Jesse said in an interview that those droopy muffs she wears in that episode was because she ended up breaking her hand while filming and the costume designers had to come up with something to hide her cast so originally that wasn't supposed to happen
@@gremlita They were meant to be 'summer muffs' apparently, because an actual muff meant for hand warming would have looked out of place. There was a background artist as well who had one so they really tried to commit to it.
I swear they just use Eloise as a cop out character/catalyst for other characters to develop. I haven’t read the books but in the show they always make her do things that seem totally out of character to the point she seems like a different character in every scene and often comes off as a hypocrite. Like the way she goes on about being a true friend to Cressida and she has all these feminist ideas from previous seasons but she couldn’t care less about Cressida’s situation in the end and went straight back to Penelope and it’s never addressed! It’s like she’s just a placeholder for the other characters to speak to until her season comes. The lack of consistency is baffling.
They’re shooting themselves in the foot with Eloise fr. It’s like she regresses and tangles her own character development up EVERY season. I have no idea how they’re going to pull off her season… on one hand, she needs to be clocked, but I hear her love interest is super chill and soft mannered so I’m like?? Y’all seem to be setting up Jo March when y’all REALLY should be setting up a Liz Bennet but OKAY
@@wonder-witch that's wild cus i've heard the opposite 😭 like i heard, in the books, E's love interest is a pretty neglectful father and very cold. that being said we've met him a handful of times in the show, and at least his show counterpart is pretty chill -- i just don't know how they're going to reconcile that with the plot of her book
I really wished the leaned into the “goofy” part of Collin’s character instead of trying to remold him into the sexy, serious male lead. They really just torches the sweet, goofy parts of his personality
The worst Bridgerton work so far. Really disappointing not just because of the costumes and makeup but also the storyline and the none existent character developments and pacing of the story. It was bad.😬
@@SpiritVinesshe looks so uncomfortable all the time too, the corset is unflattering to her and so unnecessary. The actress looks gorgeous in her press clothes etc but the show clearly didn’t know how to dress her
@@moyaxoxo5923a lot of the costumes aren’t following the 19th century style of dress which is fine! But according to their own vision they decided in season 1, they wanted a contemporary 19th century look, so the makeup was super fresh, they had no bonnets but still updos to make it more modern and they wore the silhouette with new glitter and fun frivolous stuff! Honestly really loved the costuming in s1 and 2. This season seems to just be, let’s do modern makeup on everyone( I would have preferred just pen so she shines from the plain faced natural look of everyone else), let’s make their hair loose and modern, everyone look like super modern and pen is in a super fitted wrong silhouette 😭
Violet bothered me SO much! Francesca was giddy about John. There was nothing missing from that romance. They turned Violet from a loyal mother who wanted her children to be well-loved to a silly fairy tale fan girl with some undefined obsession with dramatic love. They just made her ridiculous.
What I hated was how they destroyed the characters. Colin was more of a golden retriever, not a Casanova. I think what they ruined was trying to make Penelope and Colin seem to have more "chemistry" in a sexual context, which was so incorrect. Colin being the golden retriever gentleman he was, and not a combination of his brothers and his brother-in-law, the Duke. Not to mention they destroyed Penelope by trying to make her too sexualized rather than being accepted for who she originally was as she is.
the pacing was so weird. the choices of the characters and how they wrapped up everyones storyline. so odd... what is season 4 even gonna be about. everyone has gotten married /leaving. and the mystery of who is whisttledown is also over... soooooo ?????? 👀
As someone who HASNT read the books, I don’t care enough now, if it looks like it’ll be bad there’s not enough of a hook left for me to keep watching. I hope it’s good but it just feels done now, Benedict is just a side character to me.
I was SO confused when Debling disappeared! I thought Colin getting with Pen would solve Cressida's issue, and he would go with her, but nooooo. Just no longer a plot point at all. I guess he was so embarrassed by his failed proposal that he ceased to exist.
You know what the problem with Polin is? That the show has trained me to anticipate it, rather than taking the appropriate steps to make me actually want it.
AGREED!!! What a great way to put it! I knew it was gonna happened but I just can’t seem to understand why. Sure they’ve had a past but we haven’t seen it and it isn’t displayed and they 0 chemistry
I actually didn't hate Penelope being the one to ask for a kiss etc because i think her real arc is one of bravery - while it is good that she found power in Lady Whistledown, it sprang largely from spite and cowardice. Not telling Colin her feelings was cowardly - telling him her feelings is brave and while it would feel good for her to be told first, it doesn't help her character because there's no outward action. The problem is that, to the audience, Colin is utterly unworthy of her adoration. His 'glowup' looks silly and he's neither nice nor interesting enough. Honestly, I think they should've made him a liar like Pen about his travels - two people hiding their inward lives etc. Absolutely agree about Pen not being able to continue as Whistledown - who will come to her with REAL information?? Is she hiring spies?? What they should've done is gotten her and Colin to open a paper together. She can talk about regular, non clandestine, gossip and he can talk about travel. This season was so...bleh
Guuuurl, top underrated character development of the sisterly dynamic of the Featherington sisters evolving past pettiness? Yass! Also the Mr Finch Phillipa dynamic just keeps getting better? Not inserting himself waiting for consent? Golden Retriever Energy
besides everything mentioned (on point!) this season felt soooo claustrophobic! Has anyone else noticed that? Very few locations that were constantly repeated in a similar pattern.
I already kinda disliked eloise but this season they made her be really unempathetic and unlikeable with how little she cared about her supposed friend cressida
Also when she was talking about hobbies with those women and one of them started going on about how much she loves to embroider and eloise is like 😬.. girl just because it is a "girly" hobby doesn't make it automatically bad or mean that the person into it is stupid or shallow. Her attitude on that scene was so "I'm not like other girls I'm UNIQUE and SPECIAL"
@@sofiav7071ya embroidery takes skill and artistry, if you’re a total dummy it’s not easy to do. She’s just a boring person with no hobbies besides criticizing others lol
I was LIVID when he slept on the couch on their WEDDING NIGHT???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? That's insane, makes you think he didn't love her... we never got a scene of them working through things together like friends, let alone as a couple?
He felt hurt by what she had said. I don't blame him for not being in the mood or or not wanting to be closer to her than necessary. A lot of people have commented that they think the character is demisexual, and I think that fits well, especially based on that scene.
I was fine with them not being intimate, but sleeping on the couch? Seriously. I would much more preferred that they reversed a certain scene from the book and have Pen say "stay". Then when he hesitates she can say they don't need to do anything but she wants him to stay. Colin oblige, they hug emotionally and go to bed. The scene then cuts to an overshoot of them asleep in a tight embrace. Next scene Penelope wakes up and he is not there. When she opens the door to the study, he is sitting on the chaise long and ponders. Then the plot continues as it did. Another tiny thing I would add, was when Pen tells Colin she will have the Cressida issue solved her way and sits down to write letters to the queen and Violet, all we needed to see was Colin asking "tell me what to do, I'll support you the way you want me to". Two seconds but it would show the viewers that he was in on the plan, he talked to his mother after she got the letter as they agreed to do together, and he was standing at the back not interfering the final reveal because this is how they agreed to have it together. She wanted to do it alone, and he gave her what she needed.
@@KatharineOsborne oh of course, I did not mean it in a sexual sense, just that it's a special night, the first night as a married couple, and he just... left her? wouldn't even talk about it or look at her. It's not the way to solve things with your literal spouse, & he just forgave her after she was approved by the queen... it didn't seem right to me
@d.o.m.i. Exactly!! the wedding was stressful and sad, to be honest. I just wanted Colin to be sensitive and kind, they kept saying he was, but in his actions I just saw anger and anxiety lol
wasnt he justified in being disappointed at her for the whistledown stuff? im sorry but he was justified. pen was not being truthful to herself and to anyone and was careless with her words on the whistledown papers. colin just wasnt in the mood to forgive her yet bc she needed to hold herself accountable for her actions first. but i do wish we actually got more of them being a lovable couple after the whistledown reveal....
I thought Colin was just cosplaying as Prince Eric the whole time. I thought they were gonna do some twist with his travels and have him lie about going. Because we never hear about them, he never elaborates on what he did other than "Oh you wouldst be able to handle it" But nope. He really was just that dull. Pen deserved to be longed for and CHASED and fought over.
I felt like the camera work was the main disconnect for me. Why not do close ups on longing looks or linger on certain beats (like when he cut his hand!)? They just did not film those scenes right for emotional impact imo.
the only thing I liked about this season (apart from acting) is the theme of mothers accepting & standing up for their daughters, even though it was not always handled in the most gracious way. Portia rules
OMG YES HER REVEALING BEING LADY WHISTLEDOWN MADE NO SENSE?? like I feel she could have pleaded to the queen in private and then during the ball the queen announce that she knows who she is but will keep the secret of smt
Part of it was so that her mother could then use Pen being LW to explain to that solicitor where all her mysterious money came from so they don’t lose their title with him exposing Lady Featherington and cousin Jacks Ponzi scheme and really destroying their lives.
Terrible season. What the hell were he scenes between Penelope and Colin??? He notices another man courting her and realizes he actually loves her??? Where, during seasons 1 and 2, did he showcase ANY of that??? They didn't show us the transition from seeing Penelope as a friend to a lover. It just happened. They barely have any screen time, and when they do, it's just bland. No chemistry. No passion. Just two people reading their lines. Netflix, bring CVD back, PLEASE.
agree - I commented on another subthread that Colin should have read her letters after the willow tree (essentially a Pen rejection - let's keep our distance) and taken them to his bedroom - flashbacks, fantasize, do whatever you do when you desire someone you can't have... when he couldn't speak at the ball and she went to dance with debling, Then instead of the second brothel scene (unnecessary because Colin isn't wavering over wanting her...) he should have gone to her again like the first kiss with letters in his hands.... "this looks like love" and Pen should push that away a bit (dismiss as childhood infatuation - something to make it look like the timing is off). I love the carraige scene so I don't know how you smooth that over unless you make Colin not really lay it all on the line with the letters. Maybe Colin could have actually asked Pen for help with his writing to get a reason to be near her. Or even better, deliver letters back and forth across the street with edits and little bits of flirting (Pen isn't sure what it is and dismisses it due to past pain...) Tne. bottom line is if that first kiss was the "that's it, I'm hooked on Pen" moment, we needed to see him go back through the evidence, relive the moments, and work his way toward her, not just because Debling is about to scoop her up in record time.
@danny8747 he says in his journal that even though he was laying next to a woman right after sex, he still didn't feel close to her because they didn't have an emotional connection. But when he kissed Penelope, he realized he actually loved her and was so obsessed immediately because they did have an emotional connection... it's all in the show, you just need to connect the dots. He even explicitly said to Ant and Ben that he probably loved her for a long time but just needed to realise it and the kiss made him do just that... that's why he couldn't be with the women in the brothel - he didn't have feeling for them
it's sucks how they minimized the main characters of the story , I don't know if Netflix thought nobody would care as much as they did for Polin or what but honestly it was too bad
I don’t understand this considering how they were a fan favorite since season 1 and their book is crazy popular. They should have had more faith in this couple and their storyline.
I suggest rewatching the entire season if you haven’t. They have a similar amount of screen time percentage as the lead couples in S1 and S2. Additionally this season had to not only give Polin a HEA but by necessity resolve Lady Whistledown. Plus considering their story has been building since S1E1, I would say they are the couple we know the best (theoretically if you pay attention and don’t need to be spoon fed what is being portrayed on screen, not saying you specifically but the general you). It’s so so obvious how much care and time Nicola and Luke put into their characters. I keep catching new details included that just add more depth with every rewatch.
Redemption from what? Forcing himself to be someone he isn't. The writing was obv. bad but some ppl seem to be harsher on him than on the other male leads
@@sara1coco not redemption in the sense that he was ever a bad person but they made him into some weird playboy that so did not suit him and felt forced and unlikable. I get that the whole point was he was trying t be someone he wasn't but they just didn't fully develop that storyline. Penelope mentions it like twice but then immediately he find out shes whistledown and the whole plot switches to that. He didn't get a fleshed out redemption in that sense.
@@wouldntyouliketoknowweathe5749 But that was the point of the arc, that was Colin trying to be someone he isn't to fit into society's expectations not the real him. I get what you mean but I don't think he needed a redemption arc since Pen was the 1 keeping the secret. It only took him 2 weeks to get over it.
@@sara1coco Well I don't really think it was an arc at all. There was no real conclusion. They didn't really address it and I wish they did there would have been a good opportunity to really develop his character and explain his insecurities and why he was trying so hard to be someone else so the audience could have sympathized with him a lot more. Instead, it just gets called out one time in passing and then not really addressed ever again. And we don't even see a super significant change in his behavior. And I get that Penelope's storyline here was more interesting and integral to the show but it feels like the just completely abandoned his.
After seeing the wedding dance uncut scene Nicola posted, I'm blaming 90% of the issues of this season to the poor editing. It's frustrating because after watching that scene, they had good material that was edited and paced so so poorly. And it's frustrating because this season did have some nice emotional nuances, but it was run to the ground by smaller, poorly supervised choices. I did like this season, probably bc it's a trope I enjoy haha, but as someone that has worked in post production, there were so many missed chances that would've changed how we're perceiving entirely.
I want to see ALL the cut scenes, because the way the actors talked it really seemed like they had filmed way more sexy stuff, and more relationship stuff in general. It just feels like Polin was sacrificed for the side characters, and I'm sorry but WHO CARES about the Mondrichs.
@@sara1coco Honestly, I agree but it would've been softened if the editing was taken care off. There were even repeated cuts within scenes! i'm not sure how so many issues made the final cut unsupervised.
@@lym1875 Lmao the balloon scene BTS and even the dance scene BTS Nicola shared was so much better 😭 I feel like this season was sabotaged on purpose and I don't know why
the weird thing about bridgerton is that every season feels like a different show. not even because they change leads and tropes but because they almost reinvent how they’re telling the story, which makes it difficult to predict if you’ll enjoy the following season or not.
Splitting this season into TWO PARTS was one of the “icks” for this season. They could have just released it as one instead of this. The departure of Chris Van Dusen definately was felt. The way they disposed characters and treated our characters was hastely produced and did not give the grace and consistency in which the characters needed.
yessss like literally he is so endearing when he entertains his siblings (as in the clip of him singing), and that's such a beautiful way to celebrate a love interest and leading man. but no.....now he's just a charm-bot 🥲
It’s the boytoyfication of male love interests 😒 we can’t possibly have a main love interest who doesn’t sleep around and contract chlamydia and syphilis huh
You're so on point with this. I feel like I've change the feature of my face by how much I cringe watching this season. The love story was secondary to the "unmasking of whistledown", and even that wasn't satisfying. Give me the yearning, tension and romance we got from the previous seasons.
The one thing Brigerton is consistent in is the Brigerton family relationship, excellent sibling banter, I honestly watch the show for the Brigerton as a family and not their romances 🙈
Also the queen's logic of "She must be a Brigerton" makes no sense because of how the show is structure. It's shown that Cressida's paper is delivered and minutes later the real Wiseldown paper arrives, wich means both were published at roughly the same time, so there is no way that Wiseldown would be able to know that Cressida planed to publish Bridgerton slander. The queen just guessed that Wiseldown knew what Cressida plan to published and decided to write to protect the Bridgerton, wich also isn't what happend, Penolope just didn't want Cressida to take credit, the reputation of the Brigerton did not matter in her decision.
I watched it three days ago and when i woke up yesterday, istg I couldn’t remember what the finale was so i had to rewatch it and I couldn’t escape the thought and feeling of smth missing in this season, it feels incompleted
mama bridgerton’s great love story takes another face with each heartfelt speech she gives to her children about love. she’s the andy anderson of the bridgerton universe.
23:52 I was so mad about the settee. Why do they not have two bedrooms! That is a high class 18th century house! We know the two bedrooms separation is a thing within the Bridgerton universe from season one
I honestly don't think the new showrunner did a single bit of research, historically or in-universe. She just made the whole show so it would work with the plot she had in mind, eff everything and everybody else.
@@bridget9528 I know that had me feeling crazy. I was like they established having 2 bedrooms is a norm for upper class only a few episodes ago, what is this nonsense with the setee 💀
they definitely just tried to transfer the 21st century trope of the husband sleeping on the couch directly into the 19th century lol… felt like an anachronism tbh
I wish they kept Pen and Colin for the last season. That way, they could've kept both Penelope's spinster status from the books, which was rather important, and kept the Whistledown plot device longer. Also it would've given them more time to establish the friendship.
@d.o.m.i. I love the song rendition but it was SO not appropriate for that scene! All I could think about in my head wasthe lyrics of "grab somebody sexy tell them hey" while they were meant to be having this beautiful, intimate scene, and it just did NOT work.
there are some theories that changing Showrunners for S3 (and S4) is the reason why the season felt so off. Either way, there’s definitely a disconnect between S1-2 and S3, it’s lost its magic sadly
I actually forgot Collin had traveled before, so I thought it made sense that he was changed but I was waiting for Collin to reveal that he was just acting and he was still kind of silly/“innocent” and him being a virgin, that he pretended he’d slept with someone abroad, maybe he’d read/wrote stories about this (like he did) and just played that character irl.
yes omg i was waiting for this too. either that or that he got his ego stroked too much abroad that he became arrogant and how to act in a way that gets him attention. i wanted to see pen humble him, whip him back to shape, and/or have him grovel 😭😭

The show runner Jess Brownell said in an interview that this season was more like a rom-com, hence the over the top costumes. My first thought was oh so only the tall, skinny, stereotypically attractive couples get a romance, but the big girl gets a rom-com... My eyes rolled so hard at that.
Eloise completely dismissing Cressida’s forced marriage to Lord Grier is so out of character for someone who has pretty strong feelings about women’s sexuality rights
yess! why is nobody talking about this?
Yes Eloise was a bad friend to Cressida
Totally! Eloise drove me nuts this season, too.
Eloïse has strong feelings about herself
I thought it made sense. Eloise comes across as very self righteous to me
I hate to say it, but the show left me with the impression that Colin is more in love with the validation he gets from Penelope more than he is in love with Pen herself.
Oooo they didn't show any trust within their relationship so that adds to it fr

@@mcheesey123 I thought that was gonna happen. He tries to sleep on the couch. He's fighting with himself to not be near her and eventually goes to sleep next to her, while also still being mad.
For real! I was rooting for Pen and Eloise's friendship far more than Polin.
The reasons Colin fell for Pen were:
- she had a "glow up"
- she told him he's a good writer
The build-up from frendship to romance was abrupt and it was confusing to see him be so in love with her all of a sudden
How did the glow up make him fall for her?

@@MeemsyDYES
Pretty much.. add *that he kissed her when she begged him to and got horny… it didn’t feel respectful to Penelope as a person and his apology sucked
Add *bc she kissed him, and he mistook lust for love*
I think what bugged me the most was Benedict's plot in this season. They threw away all of his artistic qualities, and he was basically just there to sleep around. As someone who is bi, I don't mind that he had his exploration, but there was no plot to his side of the story. I felt like they just used him to add more spice to the show because we were missing it from Polin.
Yeah, I’m all for inclusive characters, but it usually seems like their orientation is the only defining characteristic 🫤 Schitt’s Creek was such a perfect show, bc every character was real and fleshed out. Their relationships had depth and heart. It wasn’t all abt “we’re doing a gay love story” 🤦🏼♀️
yes! plus he had such chemistry with the model last season…
(although i must admit i was satisfied knowing my inkling about him since my first watching was right)
When Paul asked if he's into art, writing, anything, and he said no. Did I miss something?
Lmao the Queen threatend Colin's fam the man was rightfully not in the mood 😂
She cried/was upset in nearly every episode. It was too much. In Part II, I wanted to scream at the screen because she kept apologizing and never seemed to stand up for herself.
@@jackierosas9593 I mean Pen was in the wrong so 💀
What Eloise and Cressida did on her engagement night was unforgivable! I guess Eloise was paying Pen back for ruining her reputation. But nit when your nemesis engagement is also the engagement of the brother you claim to love.
Pouty little boy? Are you saying that Penelope didn't do anything wrong and Colin shouldn't be upset?
Part of the appeal of the romance genre to women is the fact that the male love interests are devoted to a fantastical degree. They lost that element with Polin this season unfortunately, which is why a lot of fans are rolling their eyes at it. Like seriously, what girl wants to fantasize about having to beg a man to love her? We have enough of that in real life thank you very much

You articulated perfectly my sentiment! It was very icky indeed. Hate it
They only accomplished this with Kanthony 🫠 every interspersed scene of them showing how obsessed Anthony is with his wife was like a breath of fresh air
THIS IS WHY MR. DARCY IS ON TOP 🔝
He didn’t earn her!
to be fair, it was reaaaaally hard to top “you are the bane of my existence, and the object of all my desires”
Yes!…👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Agreed. The dialogues in season 2 were *chefs kiss*
CHILLLSSS
Im literally so mad that they didnt have a flashback to their first meeting, it would have added so much heart to their romance
This! Such a missed opportunity!
Yes! I wish they had a flashback instead of them just talking about it.
Colin gave me the ick a lot this season. And he never really redeemed himself.
i don't think he means that per se - Lady Whistledown announces the engagement the literal morning after Colin announces it to his family. To him, he's accusing her of doing it so that he can't back out without ruining his reputation.
the way nicola and luke had such amazing off screen chemistry… the writers did their characters and the script so dirty
Yes they are both writers & we got basic dialogue.
I also heard that the new showrunner got rid of the dialect coach for this season. That may have caused some of the dialogue to sound more modern/basic even if the writing was the same.
@@kenzieb1615ooh!! that explains a lot, the dialogue is too modern for me, what i liked about this series was the dialogue and costumes, but now it just looks so modern and not appealing to me at all
Ya they could have been given something so much better
I think it was the lack of chemistry between the main actors🥲
You're too right and it hurts
she show runners and coustime designers changes things up on them so much it must be hard for them to "get into" their characters inside a proper built world. leads to emotional slated performances
thats because the showrunner used the season as a stepping stone for future seaons instead of focusing on said season
@@Jaszy. no I totally agree with you because it felt like so much time was spent setting up Benedict and Francesca lol
i wish they had kept fun-loving and goofy colin. that could’ve been such a breath of fresh air since we haven’t had that in a male lead yet. and honestly what’s more attractive than a good sense of humour? just look at benedict, there’s a reason why he’s a fan favourite.
i think that the showrunners thought that since Benedict is a fan favorite because of his goofiness, he’s the only one that can embody that when if you really think about it, Colin is the extension between the older & younger siblings both having a serious and goofy personality.
It would have been so fun to see! Not every lead man has to be the same womanizer type.
@Dreadpersephonex he came off as a try hard, lowkey. it was super cringey to witness.
They really took the good things about Colin and amped it up in Benedict.
I was half expecting Lord Debling to marry her in the end
Girl do you mean Zuko from atla? I absolutely love this comment. Yes yes yes!
To be fair, the writers hinted in an interview that her story wasn't over (they planned to have her mother leave her father and come with her to the countryside originally, but they felt it would be too final and they wouldn't have any room to continue her story later on). So luckily it's only temporary =)
No one had a better redemption arc then Zuko
I totally agree, but I also think they might be setting up for her story to be wrapped up in a different season!
They setup this potential marriage with lots of time away, implied freedom to host social events and run a household, and then just... have that disappear so that Cressida can be even more desperate for marriage
i agree w this!
It felt really mean spirited, I was hoping he would turn round and marry Cressida to spite Penelope but then we's see their chemistry and that they work as couple better, there seemed like a lot of build up for him to literally disappear out of thin air and Cressida to just embarrass herself over and over again
thematically it would have made a ton of sense. cressida’s costumes were so outlandish this season because they wanted to make her like a bird in a cage. lord debling’s whole character is that he loves animals and protects birds specifically. it was RIGHT THERE😭😭
Yes! I thought the same thing!
I heard it's because it would be harder to bring her back in the next season with her married off. Still sucked tho.
Someone said that this season was too much Grey's anatomy and not enough Pride and Prejudice and I wholeheartedly agree. There was too much drama and not enough romance/sweet&cute/love&vibes. And Polin were reduced to side characters in their own season, especially in the latter half.
Wasn't this the same showruner who ruined calzona?
Wasn't even Grey's Anatomy like it was nothing just all over the place with Disney writing
Shonda only wrote queen charlotte, shes just a producer for bridgerton😂
True. It didn't feel like Polin's season. Emphasized much on side characters.
Also felt too rush between Colin and Penelope's relationship.
I 1000000% agree that would have been perfect!!!
Isn't the Benedict book before Colin's anyway? Not sure why they changed it around.
It felt like it was done for the sake of having more sideplots and more drama.
shiped off while LW vows to use her voice to help the powerless.
Colin is nice tho the problem is that Shonda wanted him to fight toxic masculinty
Yea that was really sad. I don't get why shows seem to want to disappoint us rather than give us a happy ending. Same reason I stopped watching Walking Dead.
REAL??? 😭 I didn’t finish season 1-2 because the guys weren’t my vibe but was excited for Colin. I just wanted a sweet friends to lovers romance…. :’(
Also it was so unclear if the things Lady Whistledown writes, are actually scandalous, like often there are no consequences to seemingly scandalous relevations.. then again she is hunted by the queen.. buuut then when she reveals herself she doesnt have an angry mob chasing her? Like decide!!
In other seasons it always seemed like the queens whistledown obsession was because she was bored and secretly loved having a rival it made no sense that this was suddenly a high stakes manhunt
I thought it would have been better ending for Pen to confess secretly to the Queen. She would still get the Queen/Cressida off her back without blowing the secret
The revelation in the book also doesn't have a mob chasing her. At least in the show, they had some heartfelt confessions after that, so that part was done better in the show.
I laughed so hard at the hot air ballon slowly coming towards Penelope. I had tears.
The whole scene didn't make any sense to me.
it was soooo unserious. like girl…just move, that thing is going at the speed of a turtle. you’re not in danger.

O no if only they had ,we would have enjoyed a much better season and it already like they are set to ruin the next season
Hahahah brilliantly said
omg the 'why was she able to just keep publishing' really irked me too, like the rest of the season was incredibly bland and often nonsensical but that part was the cherry on top- no one would fucking say things in her presence again!! they'll just lie now!! imo she shouldn't have revealed herself at all, she should've had a private conversation with the queen and lady danbury to explain why it wouldn't make sense/why it would kill the game and intrigue
Disney channel writing
I would have loved to see more of Francesca and John

I 1000% agree with you.
Yes!!

You can tell there was a new showrunner. Felt different and not in a good way.
It stuns me how the show was run by a man when it was the most appealing to women and was run by a woman when it was the least appealing to women.
Speak for yourself
goes to show that gender essentialism is harmful to the creation of appealing artwork and to imply that men can’t understand women actually contributes to our own gender alienation!
This was my favorite season!
Hard agree
Not all women get other women
I think my biggest gripe is that there was not enough screen time focusing on the development of the main couple and that the show runners completely misunderstood and gave Colin the wrong character archetype. i wanted goofy silly colin and instead we got mewing and the ick😭

Honestly the relationship between Penelope and Eloise was the most emotionally compelling for me this season

Same. Pity they had to make him a coloniser!
Same! I just felt more chemistry between them than her and Colin.

That's pretty true to the book though.
@@sara1coco They could have spent more time on it and actually made it believable though.
im so mad about how they handled this season.
Felt rushed... but then again, even with the rusbing and limited screentime it still was better than the Polin.)
no bc why did we need to see like every orgy benedict was in, like i PROMISE we get it and once was enough 💀
The problem is Polin wasn't as compelling as the other storylines, and therefore more impactful.
He was kind of giving Gilderoy Lockhart, I don't know how to explain it but the thumbnail just gave me the words for what I've been thinking this whole time
Do you mean Colin gave you Lockhart vibes?😅
@@piafleig yes 😆
the showrunner who took over clearly did not have faith the audience would be invested in polin as a central plot. the previous one teed their relationship up perfectly for her to pull it off too
@@arianamitchell7050 yes!
@@mist3995 ahh so thats why I loved part 1 and not part 2!
There are rumors that claim that the showrunner is fat phobic
JESS AND shonda saw themselves in Pen and wanted her to fight on her own, become a career woman that they are
I hated the third season so much that after finishing it I rewatched the first season and realized that I didn't hate Colin in the first season.
Agreed! I loved John and Francesca’s calm love story. John is a sweet delight.
@@alise6813it gave me second hand embarrassment
@ZaydaFleming it sucks that they immediately ruin John and Francesca's love story by making her pine for Michaela 2 seconds into them being married 😭
This season truly was the bane of my existence (negative).
Lmao. Same girl, same.

@@mossmelody7307LMFAO
Truly I felt nothing
Kanthony was so good bc it was the perfect example of "show dont tell" with the way they looked at each other or like basically sniffed each other every time they got close lol and the camera shots made it obvious to the audience that they had feelings for each other, even if Kate and Anthony hadn't realised it themselves yet. Whereas with Polin, the audience is just told of their childhood friendship which we see none of, and is told that they love each other despite the relationship still feeling very one-sided.
you hit it right in the head 🎯
Yes, with season 2 we actually felt the emotions, we felt the tension. Here we were just told about it.
Kanthony just oozes with chemistry and longing. If they added their wedding and honeymoon, season 3 would've been bearable to watch
even in s3, the way that anthony and kate look at each other, you can tell they are absolutely besotted with each other
ALSO that Anthony WAS VULNERABLE about those feelings after, HE TOLD her and he couldn’t stop himself from telling her all of it, it felt passionate it felt REAL. LOVE is uncontrollable
Why did Benedict do art for a whole season and then this season he says he doesn’t have any hobbies or interests
you're asking the right questions!!
No but literally wtf was that ? I was so shook lmao
Nicola and Luke have plenty of chemistry in interviews, though sadly, it didn't translate quite as well on screen.
🎯🎯🎯
i blame the script
@@ningiemoon Majorly.
Well he is a bad catch for someone romantic ad Penélope, he offers security but nothing more nor had any romantic interest in her.
@@sara1coco yes, but he is a huge catch for Cressida
One of my favourite parts of this season was actually the development of the friendship between Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton! It was so satisfying to see a continuation of the events from the Queen Charlotte series. I gasped when Violet said she knew about Lady Danbury and her father and their whole last conversation in the season was so beautiful
Daphne and Simon’s story felt so much more like friends to lovers than Polin 🥶
How?
I agree. Daphne became enamored with Simon at first because they did become very friendly, that’s why he even tells her about touching herself in that conversation outside. It’s why Violet and LD make such an effort in the first place, bc they see potential brewing. They also had so much more screen time to establish a friendship SHOWN to the viewer, not told. unfortunately Polin, my personal favorite couple bc i love Penelope, did not have this same effort, and viewers were TOLD about their friendship, not shown. i was very disappointed in S3, but at least it highlights the greatness of S2, S1, and QC.
totally agree
Agreed, we could also feel the love/attraction brewing, it wasn’t as abrupt as Polin
He doesn’t have his own money or land to make him an attractive prospect!
i think he did have some money tho, considering he already had a property for him and pen to settle down
@@mayruuh you’re so right!
So why?
Friends to lovers is best done when they ACTUALLY show the friendship! Also, we love adorkable Colin, bring him back
Also, what I think Colin could have done differently is asking Penelope why writing as Lady Whistledown was so important to her. He thought he was doing the right thing for his family by asking her to stop, but he never once asked her why it was so important to her. The answer to that would have unlocked a lot of other answers for him too. He definitely has lots of growing up to do as a person and so does every other character in this show, quite frankly
Yes 👏🏾 and it would've created such great dialogue for them to discover more about one another and build more intimacy

I have no idea how they’re going to pull off her season… on one hand, she needs to be clocked, but I hear her love interest is super chill and soft mannered so I’m like?? i did not catch violet contradicting herself with her advice to colin and francesca, thank you for pointing it out!
Benedict hasnt yet. Also LW will be back
I was speaking with someone who read the books and they think they'll revert to the storyline in book 3 which is centered around Benedict.
As someone who HASNT read the books, I don’t care enough now, if it looks like it’ll be bad there’s not enough of a hook left for me to keep watching. I hope it’s good but it just feels done now, Benedict is just a side character to me.

You know what the problem with Polin is? That the show has trained me to anticipate it, rather than taking the appropriate steps to make me actually want it.

I was expecting to be convinced into not hating it 😂
I actually didn't hate Penelope being the one to ask for a kiss etc because i think her real arc is one of bravery - while it is good that she found power in Lady Whistledown, it sprang largely from spite and cowardice.

She wanted to do it alone, and he gave her what she needed.

wasnt he justified in being disappointed at her for the whistledown stuff? im sorry but he was justified. pen was not being truthful to herself and to anyone and was careless with her words on the whistledown papers. colin just wasnt in the mood to forgive her yet bc she needed to hold herself accountable for her actions first. but i do wish we actually got more of them being a lovable couple after the whistledown reveal....
I thought Colin was just cosplaying as Prince Eric the whole time. I thought they were gonna do some twist with his travels and have him lie about going. Because we never hear about them, he never elaborates on what he did other than "Oh you wouldst be able to handle it"
But nope.
There was no beautiful cinematography and the camera work was so odd. The whole balloon scene?! So cringe lmao
Yes!!! i remember thinking there was no cinematography for the female gaze
the only thing I liked about this season (apart from acting) is the theme of mothers accepting & standing up for their daughters, even though it was not always handled in the most gracious way. Portia rules
Yes! The relationship between Penelope and her mother being able to heal was so nice to watch
Or even better, deliver letters back and forth across the street with edits and little bits of flirting (Pen isn't sure what it is and dismisses it due to past pain...) Tne. bottom line is if that first kiss was the "that's it, I'm hooked on Pen" moment, we needed to see him go back through the evidence, relive the moments, and work his way toward her, not just because Debling is about to scoop her up in record time.
also how does someone like collin who has supposedly slept with so many women, fall in love after just one kiss?? it doesnt make sense at all..
@@danny8747Bc the feelings were always there
the dreams started before Debling even showed up, the kiss put 2 +2 together
@@gabrielleduplessis7388Right, the writing was so bad, just tell don't show, the undermined Colin for Pen's growth ..
I honestly just wanted Cressida to marry Lord Debling and get out of that horrible situation, but no 😭
it felt like the whole first half was making me strongly dislike Colin and the second half i assumed would be his big redemption and it just wasn’t.
Yup. He didn't get a real character arc, which sucks cuz it was his season.
I am blaming the writing, poor choices and shonda/jess
@@sara1coco Honestly, I agree but it would've been softened if the editing was taken care off. There were even repeated cuts within scenes! i'm not sure how so many issues made the final cut unsupervised.
@@lym1875 Lmao the balloon scene BTS and even the dance scene BTS Nicola shared was so much better 😭 I feel like this season was sabotaged on purpose and I don't know why
@@lym1875 I just can't wrap my head around jt
the weird thing about bridgerton is that every season feels like a different show. not even because they change leads and tropes but because they almost reinvent how they’re telling the story, which makes it difficult to predict if you’ll enjoy the following season or not.
Splitting this season into TWO PARTS was one of the “icks” for this season. They could have just released it as one instead of this. The departure of Chris Van Dusen definately was felt. The way they disposed characters and treated our characters was hastely produced and did not give the grace and consistency in which the characters needed.
Colin was SO MUCH more attractive and charming in the other seasons 😭
yessss like literally he is so endearing when he entertains his siblings (as in the clip of him singing), and that's such a beautiful way to celebrate a love interest and leading man. but no.....now he's just a charm-bot 🥲
So why did everybody hate him in season 2???
It’s the boytoyfication of male love interests 😒 we can’t possibly have a main love interest who doesn’t sleep around and contract chlamydia and syphilis huh
@@shanny1413for what he said about Penelope
@d.o.m.i. did u go online at all post season 2 😭 people did not like him
You're so on point with this.
And they even made a deal about the two bedrooms thing with the Mondrich's in the first half 💀
And this is Colin showing Pen their new home. Virgin Pen deserved a bed. Everyone else in the season got one.
Also it would've given them more time to establish the friendship.
even songs mannn, wdym abcdefu was playing to penelope's grand entrance 😭😭😭
the pitbull song on the carriage scene?! WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO MY GIRL!!
@d.o.m.i. I love the song rendition but it was SO not appropriate for that scene! All I could think about in my head wasthe lyrics of "grab somebody sexy tell them hey" while they were meant to be having this beautiful, intimate scene, and it just did NOT work.
i’m so tired of all the orchestral pop songs like PLEASE who asked for this sht?????? 😭
I am a Polin Shipper but I really like the banter between Lord Debling and Penelope so much. Honestly I think Lord Debling is heartbroken from this!
Ok, lord deblin is a sweetheart, but the baloon scene looked like he was dying with penelope. He protected her back 😂
there are some theories that changing Showrunners for S3 (and S4) is the reason why the season felt so off.
@@nopeitsmxNo bc everyone told him to change, his brothers called him boring, Anthony said every man needs to got a brothel, Eloise made fun of him, no one cared about his stories and Marina called him out for acting like a kid
Right me too 😒 but shonda wanted to fight toxic masculinity
SAME!! i was waiting for it to come out that he was pretending too! like it felt like they were building up to it.
@@sara1coco Shonda isn’t the show runner of Bridgerton. Her company produce the show but that’s about as far as her involvement in that show goes. The only part of Bridgerton she had a participation on was the Queen Charlotte prequel, which was a mastedpiece.
Ugh i need a break and then I'll come back to this video because this season literally pisses me off so much even Mina's speaking cant calm me down ✋🏽😭😭
Am I the only one that was low key offended that the one season the big girl FINALLY gets her chance to shine in love, they dropped the ball on the storyline!? - signed a fellow big girl
Honestly I wish more big girls would come out and say it
Nope. Felt like the consolation prize of romance stories.
I think they did it on purpose to justify not doing more big girl stuff, the fans showed up but the quality is so low we won't show up for s4 especially after 2 years I'm so pissed- BBW
The definitely had no confidence in their leads to carry the season so they threw in too many side stories.
The show runner Jess Brownell said in an interview that this season was more like a rom-com, hence the over the top costumes. My first thought was oh so only the tall, skinny, stereotypically attractive couples get a romance, but the big girl gets a rom-com... My eyes rolled so hard at that.
