2016 f150 4x4 popping badly from front end

- 4 inch lift, popping seems to be coming from a bind in the front diff. It binds up then drops hard. But only when turning. What could cause this? CV angles are dead level. If you know anything or atleast think you know anything I'd love to here yalls ideas.
it is the frame piece that the lower control arm mounts to at the back. Two bolts on each side. They are loose. I have been dealing with this issue for a year now and it was driving me crazy I replaced my entire suspension for no reason. It is those four bolts. TIGHTEN THEM!! 30 seconds to fix this issue.

Mine ended up being the crossmember directly under the drivers seat. Two bolts on each side. Two bolts were loose. Tightened those and the sound stopped.
You can see the bolt on top of the diff move when it makes the sound could probably be loose going to check mine tomorrow
That looks exactly like what it is. I just ordered extended travel axles from NAPA to fix this sound when I’m in 4wd. You may have just saved me $700, thank you for your comment 😌🤙🏻

Cv axle? Mine sounded the same, however the cv's popped and made it seem as it was coming from box, replaced both and all good

Lower control arms just had to tighten mine after doing 6 inch rough country lift
this was driving me nuts and it was the same issue you had. 6" rough country lift. My mechanic had to lay under the truck and have someone drive back and forth to finally see it move. He tightened it up and no more noise.

So you posted this video I would. Appreciate letting us know what the outcome was please it’s driving me crazy. I’ve done upper and lower control arms cv joint, 4 wheel actuator and wheel bearing any help appreciated.

Same sound on my 2014 eco with 230k km and 6 inch lift with 35s. It's making me go crazy trying to figure it out.
Upper and lower control arms are brand new, shock and strut assemblies are brand new, so I know it's not those. I just finished replacing the inner and outer tie rods, sway bar links, and sway bar bushings and still the same noise..
Next think I'm going to replace are the CVs. Really hope this fixes the issue!

How did u figure that out and when did u last change gear oil or top up on front diff ? I have 2015 as well and just started hearing noise after changing front iwe hub actuator on the left now hearing this noise
@StevennH1 I had my wife drive up and down my driveway with me underneath on a skateboard. The sound was definitely coming from the front diff. My IWEs are in good shape and same with my CVs. I had my gear oil changed about 50k km ago. I ended up finding a used front diff with low km, installed it, and the noise is gone. Cost me $480 CAD for the part including shipping, much cheaper than replacing gears and bearings. Did the work myself so not sure how much a shop would charge. I also took the steering rack off to help with ease of installation. When doing this you should replace the massive bolts holding it on, Ford says they are one time use bolts.
same thing, I changed front drivers side hub and now it has major hum. I have to put in 4wheel drive to stop noise@@StevennH1
Front differential looks loose, noise happens as soon as it snaps up and back down.
Mine does this too, anyone ever figure out why? Only does it mainly in reverse

It’s the front and rear drop bracket sliding , you need to weld it to the drop bracket that’s connected to the frame
dealer replaced both cv axls and iwes, get home and test it ad still "clunking" in 4wd while turning. goona check front diff fluid this weekend. same dealer that tried to sell me rear diff service, transfer service and brakes after i had done all 3 weeks earlier...

My 02 150 does the too when I make a hard left turn I have replaced the hubs sway bar links, tire rods, CV axles and still doing it
It might be the rear leaf bars left or right. Maybe the bushing on the back are out or the shackles
Having the same exact issue. Only does it in 4wd. Any other time she's fine. Any input?

It's the drive shaft from the transfer case.
How did you come to that conclusion? Mine does the same going forward not so much in reverse. I have it posted.
@Backcountry_single_track same can put foot to floor in reverse nothing forward that noise and my driver side 4x4 kicks out
Have you taken apart your front differential to check for chipped teeth ok the pinion gear?
Definitely the cv axle. Just had the same thing and finally got it figured out.
When in 4x4?
Cv axle should not turn when not in 4x4 , trust me
@@spankyranger8842 sorry bud, but the cv axle spins with the hub even if in 2wd. You can spin the wheel while in the air and the cv axle still spins!

@@JacobStevens47 I'm going crazy trying to figure out the same sound on my 2014.. changed inner and outer tie rods, sway bar links, sway bar bushings, and it didn't go away. What was the issue with your CV?
bad sway bar end links? Or did you find out?

THIS IS MY GUESS, four-wheel-drive vehicles like this, or NOT supposed to be in four-wheel-drive on a non-slip surface because one of the front tires is going to spin a different speed than the rear causing damage to the differential. I’m pretty sure it’s making that sound because it’s got a lot of pressure and the joints are creaking it should be fine. Just take it out of four-wheel-drive when NOT NEEDED

Man everyone in the comments is saying it’s something different I’m having the same issue right now with my truck. And it’s only when reversing or turning especially going into a parking spot or out of a parking spot. And it’s weird when it rains or it’s cold outside it doesn’t make that sound as muc. Am I crazy or wtf haha

That’s how mine was tighten up those 4 bolts, knock on wood my sound went away

@@td7227 craw under the truck take off that liner as if you were to drain the oil. Right behind that there’s a crossmember that goes left to right of the truck it’s about 3’ long on that same piece there’s 4 bolts 2 on each side i believe 13mm. All 4 of them were loose on mine i tightened them with an impact and so far so good. No more sound.

What did find out about the popping sound ! Mine is doing same can’t find anything loses parts took everything apart didn’t see any broken parts!!

I haven’t found anything besides a inner tie rod on passenger side. It makes a slight clunk. I tested all my joints and bushings. Replacing inner tie rod. But doubt that’s the cause of the pop in reverse. Two of my lug nuts also made a similar popping sound when putting the wheel back on and that sounded just like it
@@GirthosaurusRex mine makes the “popping” noise when turning the wheel back and forth. I don’t actually have to be moving for it to make the noise. It also pops more/ louder when the truck is in gear. When it’s in park it hardly pops at all.

IWE or the CV axle. IWE losing vacuum and bad IWE sealing.
my drivers side is loosing vacuum. Im having to put it in 4 wheel drive to stop the noise.
@@ashleyevans9363 this loud pop I’ve been experiencing in my raptor was from some maintenance I had done on my front differential. The mechanic did not torque down the 3 bolts to spec when reinstalling the front diff. An impact gun will not get these bolts tight enough. Once I torqued down all bolts, the popping is nonexistent.
@@ashleyevans9363 ah, I’ve replaced both my IWEs. It’s not a tough job, I added just a little more Grease with the new set up.

It ended up being bad A arms on mine but there's many other people with the same noise and it turned out being a different problem

No fixes yet, I just have been letting it pop, my only thought is my the cv is binding up. So I plan on replacing the cv and hope that fixes the issue
@@noahcully4867 its the iwe actuator on whatever side thats making the noise for me it was the lf. It's easy enough to reboth and Cheap enough.

Did swapping your cv axle fix the popping noise?
Does it only happen in 4x4. I have that issue only in 4x4 like its slipping out of 4x4.

@@ThaOhSooPrettygirl the hub teeth we’re slightly stripped so it was skipping teeth . Got new Front hubs and climbing up everything now.

It's was the 4x4 hubs. the teeth worn and it kept slipping in 4x4 .

Never found a fix sadly, nothing seems to be loose or out of the ordinary.

Don't turn on the 4x4 on hard surface, it will do popping sounds. Took mine o the dealership and nothing was wrong, just not suppose to use it on hard surface. Says it on the manual as well.

That's what I think. Looks like a small bolt fell out. New metal inside the thread grooves. Wonder if that happens correctly these ford's. Sounds dry and leaking
