pr0xy Brand new games ALWAYS came with manuals before the past two generations or so. These days not having the manual is the norm, when it used to just be a given, and then occasionally getting it as a "bonus" feels weird.
They started drying up in the 360/PS3 days and are completely non existent now. I don't know why they even bother with boxes that big on the switch games, when they could be the size of PSP/Vita/DS boxes.
I miss having instruction manuals with my games 😔. Being a 90’s kid my parents would buy a game for me and I’d be so excited about it I would open it and read the instruction manual on the drive home!
This is one of my favorite 3DS games. The challenges made it perfect for quick bursts. I loved the voice acting and whacky story. It’s a game that knows it’s strengths and plays to them very well. For me the 3DS version was a 9/10. It has a lot of charm and fun factor. : )
If you like that booklet, thats how Nicalis has been doing all their first prints on Switch! Full color booklet, and other extras like sticker, keychains, mini ost, squishies, and more.
I'm making the upgrade for one major reason: two-player co-op. Never got around to playing it multiplayer on the 3DS, since we only owned one copy of the game.

You forgot to mention that the EX release strips the English voice overs that were part of the original 3DS release. It makes this feel like a not so definitive edition. I would hope they can be patched in later, but I'm not that optimistic that it will happen.
I was looking at this since it's currently on sale for $9.99 since I like action RPG/beat em up hybrids but the fact that the physical version has an instruction manual is tempting to pay $30 more, but you can't beat $10 digital though.

The ClassicGameRoom review for the original game was what finally sold me on getting a 3DS back in 2012, and I absolutely loved it (maybe not to the same degree as Guardian Heroes but that was definitely one of the big draws for me when I found out about Code of Princess). Definitely hoping I can pick up this release for it while they still have the first print copies in stock.
Am I the only one who had the original, reserved the switch version, traded it in, got the new one, and was immediately disappointed that it was only Japanese available audio. I REALLY loved the English dub of the original game. My only hope is that a dlc for the English dub comes out. Maybe I’m alone, I don’t know.
Owning a Nicalis game on Switch is like owning a gameboy game because of those manuals. Pretty awesome stuff! I love what they do with their physical games!
I had this game on 3DS and I loved the hell out of it. But I lost my copy and replacing it would require I take out a loan, so I just never bothered. As soon as I saw it was getting an enhanced rerelease on Switch, I threw that into my Amazon cart and waited for months on end to get it.
I am glad it doesn't look like there are frame drops in this version, that is the main reason why I never got into the 3DS version, as the combat was already slow without a poor framerate hindering it more.
I loved Guardian Heroes back in the day. Didn't own the game myself, but a friend had it and so I would play it over his house. I got a copy of the original Code of Princess when I bought my 3DS, but never got around to playing it for some reason. So when I saw that they were releasing an updated version for the Switch, I decided to go ahead and grab the game again, as well as the actual console, which I didn't have. Yes, that's right, I bought a Nintendo Switch primarily so I could play this game! I got the Switch a few weeks before Code of Princess EX came out, so I grabbed Octopath Traveler at that time, but I had already pre-ordered CoP EX from Amazon before I had ever bought the system, and so far I'm really enjoying it. As you said, not as frantic as I remember Guardian Heroes being, but I've only just started so I haven't gotten all of the main characters from the campaign mode yet. Definitely a good buy for me though, as I love these types of games, and they're becoming more and more rare nowadays.

I have the original that I kept sealed, but rented it from Gamefly back in the day. Didn't care much for the slow-ass molasses gameplay/battle system. Good to know it's the same way on Switch. I'll probably get it at some point though, because it's Nicalis !
You might like Phantom Breaker: Battlegrounds Overdrive in the Switch eShop. I bought the original game for the xbox360 back in the day. But if you like beat-em-ups with some rpg elements (leveling up whatnot), WITH 2 planes to switch to (instead of 3 like CoP EX).
This video just got me hyped to try Guardian Heroes. Missed out back in the day due to the sega Saturn being one of the two major classic consoles I didn’t own (the other was the TG16).
Yo Johnny. The awesome PC port of Y's Memories of Celceta is out. It has a few issues that need to be ironed out but it's a fantastic game and the PC port has a lot of graphic options to run the game and even HDR.

I've been eyeing this one since I've rekindled a love for the Vanillaware games lately. I'm suprised to hear you talk about the contents of the pakaging though. Did you not get a chance to pick up the physical versions of Cave Story and The Binding of Isaac? So this game is kinda like castlevania? Im playing bloodstained now on the ps4 but I want a similar game for the switch. I know they have bloodstained for the switch but its broken on the switch I heard
I was hyped for this game on 3DS when it first came out. I bought it and I played through it with Solange and Ali. That was about it for me. Maybe it's just me but I don't really get it. Solange is an attractive character, I've seen worse gameplay in games that have a bit of polygons/fan-service in them but this game is really not that great. I have played games like it, Guardian Heroes for example. It's nice it resembles that but it gets really monotonous and being placed in a little area rather than a complete level can get boring and feel claustrophobic. I like owning it for 3DS because it's rare and has co-op but the clunky sub-standard beat 'em up gameplay and the fact it's on steam now doesn't help justify buying this.
I hope you'll check out Blade Strangers when it comes out, its a fighting game that features characters from Code of Princess and other indie games like Shovel Knight! :D
I thought the mini CD and instruction manual with Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap was a cool little extra, but now I'm wondering if it might actually be a nice quality standard from Nicalis? I've kinda missed getting a manual with a game and I always feel a little disappointed when I open up a new game case and see the empty manual clips.. so I hope at least Nicalis continues doing it with all of the games they publish.

When I seen the video it reminds phantom breaker with the game play, the leveling is like River City Ransom Underground or Tokyo Rumble mix with Scott pilgrim and the artstyle is like king Arthur the arcade from Capcom. I really want this game.

I'm bummed that for some reason they removed the VoiceOvers from the original release which makes no sense to me. I have never seen a developer Remove V.O. Usually they are adding or leaving it without due to budget.
I own the 3DS version, physical and digital copies. I've got it on Steam as well, in higher resolution. I really wanted to play Guardian Heroes at the time and this was the closest I could find on the 3DS. I've got Guardian Heros on the Xbox 360 I hope they make a sequel to this or complete remake and rework the combat to make it as good as GH. Just playing Blade Strangers now to fill the gap.
I actually completely agree about combat. While I did enjoy this game on the 3DS, the story was so fun and hilarious. The combat did feel a little sluggish at times. I button mashed at first, but had more fun when I learned some combos. I hope they didn't take out the English Voice Acting, I really liked it.

The original 3DS version was published in the west by Atlus, while the Switch version was published by Nicalis. Maybe it's a rights issue?

You can actually play an updated version on the 360 too. If I remember correctly, it has less slowdown than the Saturn version plus some extras.

We will keep getting mini cd's trust me thanks to the Switch box. Blazblue Cross also comes with a mini cd for the ost.

ThatBoy Toni the red flag for me is when I kept seeing "Destroy all enemies" as the only mission objective. Kind of a bore for this type of game.

what don't get the 3DS version of the game have English voice acting. The Switch version doesn't. I know that is a minor complaint.
