      @@Juomaru finally, a reviewer who's extremely excited to play this game! So many reviewers keep saying how weak the story is, or how they hate random encounters. Those reviews miss the point of this game, in my opinion. I'm really happy I own this game, and so far, it's given me many hours of enjoyment!

    This is such a rewarding game once you learn the combat, and you beat a few bosses! This is one of those games, that has random encounters, which are extremely frustrating, but once you start leveling up, you start craving those random encounters just to see how powerful you become! This game is so fun!

      This hit me hard, I once said I can't wait to grow up and get a job to buy all the games I want,
      I grew up and got a job but I no longer have time to play.
      8 hours working + 8 hours sleeping leave only 8 hours to do everything else in life!
      I am now looking to play a game in the summer and Octopath Traveler has been on my radar, but a BIG negative that makes me hesitate to pick up is how every reviewer says it is a long game and you have to pace yourself.
      Another game on my radar is Persona 5 Royal which also requires a lot of time to complete (a loading panel in the game literally says to "Take Your Time")
      I wish I could sell something for a crazy amount of money to last me and my family a lifetime, then I could play as much as I want.

    One of the complaints I've seen floating around is that the story is pretty sub par, and that the different characters aren't tied together very well.
    I have found it to be the exact opposite. I loved how the motivations for each character to set out on their respective journey were so varied, and how it made sense that they would each form a bond with the main character that was at first as simple as just needing a companion for an adventure.

      it's a hard game i would say. Or at least for me. Its not impossible, but its a grindy game.Chapter 1 is a breeze, but the difficulty really kicks in in chapter 2. Not that i have anything against that. But i think newcomers to jrpgs they will have hard and frustrating moments with it. Very rewarding tho. My favorite game on the switch this year. By faaar.

    • @BartvG88

      I disagree that it's grindy. Maybe if you want to to one characters chapters in one go, but spreading it around it's very doable.

    I'm actually quite happy to hear that it is a style of rpg that really wants you to invest time into it in order to progress through it. I think too many people rush through games in order to play the next one when a game in itself should be savored and enjoyed to its fullest. I actually like the sound of this games approach when it comes to transitional difficulty. I think some games should force you to grind because its no fun if you can generally coast through a game right to the end. I'm looking forward to giving this game a try when i eventually get a swtich.

    • @Drewsefer89
      @Drewsefer89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheCompletionist it’s really playing hard on the nostalgia. The gold ol’ days of SNES were always being heavy. I remember spending hours just grinding away to level up enough.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Only 30% of players finish any given game. So people aren’t even rushing through so they can get to the next game.people just want games to be passive entertainment like television. The widest audience will be available for the product that asks the least out of its audience, like pop-music, junk food, television and young adult fiction books,

    You definitely don’t want to exclusively pursue one storyline at a time. That’s why you’ll be a dozen levels or more shy of the recommended for the next chapter. It’s designed for all the characters to be experienced asap! Usually once you have a full party plus one or two, you can start looking at some chapter 2s

    This game is amazing. I'm 100 hours in and still have a lot to do. I like all the side quest stuff. The optional jobs are great, as well as the bosses, some of them are really hard too. The optional dungeons are good too, have some good equipment. And I love to do every option for each townsperson and buy/steal all their stuff and scrutinize/inquire for a hidden treasure as well. That's why I'm 100 hours in and still haven't beaten the game.

      Daniél Pinto Gouveia It would of course be my intention to finish Ys. However in the past, whenever I’ve stopped one big game to start another big game, some other game would come out and then I struggle to get back to the original one I intended on beating.
      My most successful gaming habits is to have two, maybe three games on the go; one meaty big game and one or two smaller, less involved ones.
      That said, I’m having A LOT of fun playing Ys, so much that it’s the only game I’ve been playing for 2 weeks. Thus it shouldn’t be TOO difficult to resist Octopath for now (I hope).

The stories (each character has their own) range from the mundane to the dramatic culminating into one intertwined epic tale. Incidentally, they finally released an official strategy guide for OT almost 2 years later.

    Rough lesson to learn: Pick your starting character carefully. H'aanit and Cyrus are great choices because they're two characters you would love to have 'stuck' on your party.
    Case of H'aanit:
    H'aanit comes with Axe and Bow skills with a free creature summon (Linde) that does Lance and Sword damage. Dual classing later can deepen her versatility. As an added bonus she makes a good partner for Primrose spamming Beguiling Dance as beast summons can be done when you're silenced! (The goat creature near Noblecourt is an AOE heal that clears debuffs.)
    Case for Cyrus:
    Cyrus has no real depth on weapon skills but covers the three basic elements, Water, Fire, Thunder and has a passive that identifies weaknesses. Dual classing him into a healer makes him basically the only caster you'll ever need. (I put a silence immunity accessory on him and dual-classed him as an Apocathery.

    Let me get this straight. You can follow and complete each character's story from one save file (and just swapping back and forth btwn characters)? Or do you have to start 8 new save files to get each story?

  • @bokagoofy
    @bokagoofy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not really a big fan of rpg's that force you to grind, but I can understand compromises has to be made for a game as non-linear as this one. A much bigger compromise is the lack of interactions between party members. I understand why it has to be this way, but it's something I usually really enjoy in JRPG's of this style, so I can't help but complain a little. Other than that I'm loving this game to death. The soundtrack, and especially the boss tunes are fantastic.

    I decided to pick this up the other day and I think when you have time Johnny, you should give it another shot but try everyone's pathways at once. Doing just one leads to hours of grinding which you found but if you visit every story you will naturally be at the correct levels.

  • @Tanuvein

    Sounds similar to SMT/Persona combat. I was slightly turned off by the demo because I thought the writing was poor, but your the first one to actually cover the gameplay in depth and it looks really good.

    Before you get this game, try the prologue demo. I tried it and I found the combat tedious in the early game, especially the long boss battles and constant wild encounters. Since there's no health bars, you don't know how close you are to the end, so I got really bored at the first boss with the Thief. The story though, I loved the bit that I saw. It was pretty interesting. I hope the combat gets better maybe 10 hours in, but right now would I buy this for the full $60? No, not right now.
    Edit : Also a main reason I might not get this is because I was thinking about getting Ys VII. I don't know which is better.

    I save first and go into those dungeons to get destroyed. It was part of why I decided to stop the demo and just wait for the game, those danger zones are blocked off in it.
    I've been hearing that the characters barely interact with each other which is a little disappointing but not a deal breaker. I love the battle system and game world from what I played.

    I just bought the game for my new Switch, after having neglected JRPG's for 20 years (last one I played was Chrono Trigger in 2000). Not that I dislike them, but simply got drawn into competitive PC gaming etc for a while. I already put 10 hours into it, in 2 days, and absolutely love it. The story is definitely a bit cheesy in my opinion, but it more than makes up for it with the beauty, charm, addicting gameplay and AMAZING original score.

    Yeah, I get what you mean about the boss battles. Right now i'm finishing off my first chapter four quest (It's Tressa's, btw, because I picked her first) and the recommended level was 45. Guess how high a level most of my party were? Two of my members were level 41, while one was level 39. And I've been farming ever since

    I think you answered my question. I have all the characters unlocked. I haven't fast traveled anywhere, I've fought every random encounter and my main character is only 15. I need to be 24 to start chapter 2. I think that's where you're alluding to grinding for 6 hours.
