I actually bought a Switch console for this game (although I did pick up Octopath Traveller as well). I own the 3DS version, but I've never gotten around to playing it, so when I saw that a remastered version was coming out for the Switch, I decided to grab it. Having a lot of fun with it, and with my busy work schedule during the week it's great for quick sessions, but also works for longer marathons as leveling up the large cast of characters by replaying different levels (and the other various play modes) really can eat up time. I personally really like the visuals, and for me the Japanese audio is a plus (I hate dubbed versions of anything - games, movies, anime, etc.). I've only played this docked, so I can't say how it would look on the Switch when in handheld mode, but I don't have any complaints in this regard. And I actually thought the price was reasonable, when you consider that most Switch games (at least the physical releases), seem to be around the $50 - $60 range, at least for the 1st party titles. I was also happy to find out that the 1st run editions of the physical copy include a demo soundtrack CD, as well as an honest to goodness instruction manual (how long has it been since we've gotten one of those)! So yeah, a great purchase for me. As a fan of Guardian Heroes back in the day, finding a game that could be considered a spiritual successor to that title was a nice treat. Been meaning to pop in my 3DS copy for years, but now with the EX version I can enjoy the upgrades all while playing on the big screen, my preferred method.
Great review, and I agree with you. I've played this on the 3DS and it does seem pricey on the Switch. I like the game, but I got tired of it real fast, especially when I realized that the other characters (50) can only be used outside the campaign.
''It's hard to justify 39.99'' ... I would love to agree here in the future. But right now I can't find an English version of this game under $120 used. So yeah... it seems people did find a way to justify it.

Thanks Beast appreciate it, I get your point on the fun bit, I was disappointed by the visuals and lack of regionalised voice - seemed sloppy to take out, it’s a fun game but it’s not for everyone - it’s one of those that I think some people with really love but most wouldn’t be served spending their limited budgets on this one
Just got this on PC! Looked like a fun enough game n i got it for 2.99 usd/euro so cheap i guess!! Thanks 4 this video(dont now if there is any difference between pc n switch version of this game!!?=..

SwitchWatch I had the JP version back on the Saturn and the HD release on 360. Just a wonderful game. Treasure are truly masters. Even their Yu Yu Hakusho Megadrive fighter was waaaay before it's time, with a combo counter, different planes for fighting, supers, cancels, and four player fighting. The DS Bleach games took a lot of those ideas and cranked it all up to 11... Blah blah blah. I could go on all day about their games.
Well they are partnering with Nicalis for publishing now having brought Ikaruga over, it’s about 4 years since their last new game so fingers crossed for something new soon! 👍
Very fair review. Thoughts from someone who double-dipped (own 3DS version too): This should NOT have retailed for $40, even with the extra physical goodies, slightly upgraded visuals, and improved frame rate. $29.99 is more reasonable. Especially with better values out right now in this lower price range, such as Sonic Mania, Dead Cells, and Steamworld Dig 2, just to name a few. The most unforgivable disappointment about this so-called "EX" release is the absence of the English dub. I know the reason it isn't here is because of red-tape with the previous publisher, Atlus. But still, for 40 freakin' dollars, something should have been worked out. It's a fun game, though.
Thanks MJ for the insightful comment - I didn’t put two and two together on the voice acting being linked to Atlus.... that makes some sense - like you say though it’s a tough sell for the cost and the digital price is the same! I think it’s a case of so many choices right now that you have to be honest and say that for most people this won’t be good value, that said it is fun and has its place for sure, I just wish they polished it more or reduced the cost but I’m sure those who didn’t play it the first time round and are keen on the genre will enjoy it still
The lack of English dub completely ruins almost all of emble and semble's jokes. As a fan of Guardian Heroes, I cannot recommend this game. The difficulty balancing feels way worse. Solange herself feels incredibly weak and slow compared to any other characters, and the level grinding is an awful boring grind that was never in GH.
Take it from a double-dipper who's really stupid but luckily has pretty deep pockets, there really is no reason to own the Switch version of this game.
To be honest, most of these animu games are generally of really poor and rushed quality; Nights of Azure, Code of Princess, Shining Resonance, Gal*Gun 2, Atelier Lydie and Suelle plus some other animu games you guys have also reviewed.
Yeah that’s sadly been the case, I think they do have a place and a solid following but I have seen the trend of high prices on these games vs the quality which I think is unfair - it does feel a little bit like taking advantage of a loyal following
I mean, I have been sinking 50 hours into Nights of Azure 2 in pursuit of the true ending. That game is so unpolished and buggy it ain’t even funny.. but those seem to be the kinds of games I find myself drawn to. Another example; this year my brother gave me Ni no Kuni 2 and The Girl and the Robot on PS4. TGaTR was an unpolished, yet charming mess of an indie game, that I curiously found myself drawn to, wondering what lurked behind the next corner. Ni no Kuni on the other hand, a polished high quality AAA game.. I dropped it after the first chapter..
PikaLink91 I find shinning a really good game , story may be your generic light novel 12 episode anime but I l love the game as a whole. With atelier i hate that I bought it, not because of the game the game is generic but you can have fun. What I hate is the hellish frame rate. The others games you mention deserve the trash can.
The reviewers voice is very robotic sounding and stiff with small pauses in strange places, it’s clear it’s being read from a script (not necessarily a bad thing btw) there’s no emotion or anything and it’s coming across as flat which is a shame because it is a well written and produced review but the voiceover seems disingenuous, almost to the point I’m not convinced he’s actually played the game himself so question the critiques that are being made which is not a good sign for a video review.
SwitchWatch I did not expect a response, I completely agree, it’s definitely getting better! Though I wanted to comment on this one as it’s the video where it’s the most apparent! You guys need more subs, I’m definitely not highlighting this to be horrible by any stretch of the imagination, I just found myself watching your content wondering how the hell you don’t have more views or subs.

When we started we never thought we would get 1k let alone almost 22k. We have done all we can to improve in every way possible and hope peeps like you enjoy our content. We are glad you do, we take onboard constructive feedback and make those incremental changes to improve. We very much love what we do and just have a passion for gaming and making vids. This is only the third time I have strongly disagreed with you guys.. I bought this on the 50% sale and played for 3 hrs before and loved every minute of it.. so unless something drastically changes later...Some critics have been harsh on this one. Some liked it a lot though. I guess it's a love it or hate it game. This is actually the first time I've gone against your review and purchased a game *after* i knew you gave it a low score. The other 2 instances are games I already owned and in one case hated and you guys liked it, (aces of liftwaffe, what crap), and in the other also liked it and you guys didn't..Maybe you guys were not huge guardian heroes fans? I took the risk because every video I saw made it LOOK like a game I would love, despite the low scores.. and I was right.. It's interesting isn't it how different we all are when it comes to specific games.. Like if a game is really bad, in general, (fallout 76 anyone), people won't like it en masse. But there's certain kinds of games where the opinion is very divided and I think this is one of those games. Anyway, I recommend it, and it's 50% off right now.. so.. anyone on the fence might want to give it a go at it's sale price. :) I still give you a thumbs up of course! Never a down cause I appreciate the work you put into the review and every human being is entitled to their opinion :).
To be fair to James (Jordan here), I played this back on the 3DS and I thought it was fairly mediocre at the time too. I guess it's just one of those games that has divided people. Some people enjoy this, while others don't. It's weird for a beat 'em up kind of game as me and James both enjoy that genre, but something about this one didn't gel with us.
Hi.. sorry, was I unfair? I am a bit concerned now that I said something wrong.. I was very careful with my wording and i am VERY sorry if I somehow offended.. I love beat em ups as well.. There's one called claws of furry which i hate and many like that.. as I said we are all different really.. I don't think shovel knight is that special at all and certainly obscenely overpriced.. to me it's a $5 quick and fun game. EVERYBODY loves that.. All I am saying is that variety makes the world go round. Personally this is one of the best beat em ups I have ever played.. and the production values really helped send it over the top for me.. My personal rating is an 8 out of 10.. I would have give it a 9 if the attack was a touch more responsive.. that's absolutely the only fault I could find. If i am really nitpicking, it could have done with blood.. It's one of those games where blood would have enhanced rather than take away anything. Cheers@@SwitchWatch

This game is very annoying, at higher difficulty levels mobs juggle you in a way that you can't react or counteract, I could swear you can increase your speed stat in the 3DS game but not in this one, I don't have a 3ds to test it right now unfortunately, but I feel this is the worst drawback of the game, you can max up a character and will still feel slow, that makes things worse again because there comes a point at which normal mobs or bosses can counterattack faster than your next hit in the combo. It can get very infuriating. I don't know, I loved the 3DS version of this game and found it enjoyable, but damn this EX version feels more like a downgrade for some reason.

Great Review man I agree with the price is to high. I don't think it deserves a 5.5 though maybe a 7.0 or 7.5. It's still a good game and lots of fun

Hi the game is on sale on the eshop now. I love beat em ups so would you say it was worth £17.99?
Still quite expensive but if you love these type of games then it.may not get much cheaper as was expensive in the first place.

It's insane that this is also 40 bucks digitally. It shouldn't be a cent more than $14.99 on the eshop.

I bought this game and regret it. I'd avoid buying... It's just not good
