I was honestly not the biggest fan of this art style, but this game actually looks really good. I'm a somewhat newer DQ fan who started with 8 about a decade ago.
I like the art style but my biggest complaint was starting the game and being behind a giant wall and hunting for the door. For some reason he just would not walk through it and it took a second. I'm also seeing many such other areas where locking the camera and putting your character behind a wall or object can be a little annoying. It's not major. I dunno, I find myself wanting to rotate the world.
@@RecordofRadioIn past Dragon Quest games, you could always rotate the screen whenever you were in towns, which made finding items or paths real easy. For whatever reason, you cannot rotate the screen in this game, which is real frustrating.
@@themailman3331 they're trying to make it feel like it's a 2D game, which, I just would prefer more 2D DQ games if that's what they're going for. There's no denying it looks nice, but if the only 2D part are the monsters and character sprites, just make it like DQ7 or something. it feels like that to me, minus the ability to rotate stuff.
My first Dragon Quest was DQ 8 on the 3DS. I bought it to play on the plane/airport coming and going from Vancouver whenever I was travelling. The feeling of exploring the world playing these games on the go is unmatched. I’ll be doing the same for this one. Played all the games since then. Thanks for all the reviews, Johnny 👊

Even in the 80’s/90’s games localized for the US had heavy censorship. It’s a nonissue, but every game release has to have outrage surrounding it these days.
i relly like dragon quest 3 remake and i don't understand the outrage even wene the reasons are explained to me they make no sense. A type and B type outrage over that. i bought the game on steam and am loving it i see no reason for the outrage of some fans.
Playing it right now on switch and absolutely hooked. Loving every minute. Ive come to realise my fave kinda jrpgs are grindy ones where story takes a bit of a back seat and gameplay is front and centre. Smt 5, octopath, bravely default and this are exactly my jam
Pre-ordered a couple months back. My only conflict was it’s a perfect steam deck game, but I want to have the physical for DQ games. The beauty of it is, I can stream it on steam deck perfectly from PS5! 30-40 hours is perfect.
Great review😀 i felt so nostalgic hearing you talk about it. And this game is such a gem. Cozy and so fun. But you must stop excusing games for being turn-based. So many people do that. I never hear someone excuse a game for being an action rpg.
Another little detail I noticed, that wasn't mentioned in the video. While outdoors, characters' hair and capes will sway and billow in the wind, but not indoors.
I've preordered the Collector's Edition for the PS5, since i don't have much Dragon Quest merchandise i'm not only excited for the game but for the whole package of acrylic standees and the nice box that will fill an empty spot on my shelf that has been reserved for it since it has been announced
Finally a review from someone's opinion I know is rooted in experience and passion, these other reviews want to wax lyrical about some bs I just want an actual fans perspective.
yes dragon quest 11 is a really well done game. i am really liking my play threw of dragon quest 3 i bought it on steam.this is my first time ever playing the game i never played the original. i hope after they do 1-3 at some point they do 4-6 as well.

@@veghesther3204 Actually that's a lie Toriyama designed several characters for GT including the ship they use in the Black Star Dragon Ball Saga plus he gave it the name GT
The difficulty options do seem to be catered to attracting people who don't play any/many jRPGs. I played through the SNES version for the first time earlier this year (I chose to just after I heard about Akira Toriyama's death - alongside finally playing Chrono Trigger finally too), and would say that it was marginally harder than my experience with this on Draconian difficulty so far. To be honest, even though I didn't find that SNES difficulty hard, I'm happy that there's easier difficulties for attracting new players. They did the same with SaGa 2 Remake , and as a non SaGa player, I was happy for that middle difficulty. I'm loving this so far, the only thing I wish was that it had more soundtrack options. A lot of Square Enix remakes/remasters include original/older soundtrack options - and whilst I always like to play with the up to date soundtrack, the option is always appreciated for repeat playthroughs. Can't wait for I&II hopefully next year, and I hope we get IV-VI over the next few years. This is 100% the perfect game to jump in to the series with, and is easily a jRPG to recommend to new jRPG players - the QoL and easier difficulty settings with it having bread and butter mechanics and story with some neat additions make it worthwile.
@@spartacuslagomorph3115 functionally its the same. they had to do that because of the ratings board that rates games. do research don't just blame square enix ask were they aiming for a specific rating are the rating requirements different then they were wene this was originally made. the answer to both questions is yes. if the requirements for ratings change threw the years than they will have to change with them. that is the reason for the so called sensorship of the bodies witch lets be honest is not rally noticeable unless you are looking for it. game play is the important thing too me.
I think when people compare the graphics to Octo, it's more that they relate rather than directly mimic. I would have to disagree that there isn't a direct relation to Octo's art style. This isn't a problem for me, but saying it's so much more is being a little generous.
Both I and II are slated to come out next year at some point. If I recall, Horii even stated that you'll want to play through all 3 of them in chronological order as when you beat that last game in time it'll offer a neat little reward for fans. Not sure what it'd be, but hopefully, it'll be neat.
it doesnt really change anything though. its literally a non issue. its a blink and you miss it detail the vast majority of people wouldnt even notice, it "the crowd" didnt start crying about it. of all the things they could do that would genuinely kill the game, this is such a minimal thing, that unless you are an extremist when it comes to that crap, you will forget about that 5 minutes later.
@@beebindy "why change it at all?" no idea. what i do know is that, it is only a thing for the literal 5 seconds it takes to pick A or B. its like i said, this is only an issue if you are an extremist when it comes to anything even remotely questionable. for everyone else, this is such a non issue, the vast majority wouldnt even notice at all.
@@beebindy really dude? that's all you got from it? not the rest, but the one word that is literaly explained by me saying "only" and "5 seconds"? yes, if this 5 seconds of choice between A and B instead of Male and Female, even though that's still what you are picking, is enough to ruin the game for you. then yeah, you are an extremist. its like that guy who cried about pronouns and the internet spent the next few weeks making fun of.
I want a full remake like this of final fantasy 6. If not that then the final fantasy 7 remake treatment but I doubt we'll see that. But six doesn't get enough love if you ask me. It's the best one in the series in my opinion.
Im not disappointed by the remake. But after a certain scene in DQXI I honestly thought they were going to go more of a route with the look of modern DQ titles. I wonder if Toriyama's passing had anything to do with the look of the remake. RIP legend
At first you asked if anyone would be picking this up. I have played Dragon warrior/quest 1-7. I started with 1, got far and didn't finish. Then I tried playing 2-6 and stopped playing because the speed of the game or combat was SO SLOW. Then I played dragon warrior 7 and beat it. It was slow, but kept my interest more than the others. I think I have about 220 hours on that game which is the longest RPG I have ever played by far. I also played it while I was unemployed living with my parents. So I was not thinking of picking this up. However, you mentioned it had a fast forward feature. So I don't know about this now. I am glad they made these updates to make it easier to play.
There's new expanded story content, voice acting, new classes, etc. I think it's worth it. Even if you save it for later down the line. Plus, this will convince them to make more HD-2D remakes of other games fans want. Peace 💯
@ Not really sold on it. Voice acting is a reason I avoid jrpgs these days. And expanded story? Down the line I could watch a stream of it. Sure its a nice port, and I may try it in the future if its on sale but not as a must play asap thing.

Anxiously awaiting notification of my download being available on my steam deck. I pre-ordered day 1.
I still remember having my mom renting this game for me at the 7-11 for 5 bucks when I was in grade school.
Great review, from one who enjoys the style and format of 80s/90s jrpg.
I wish Zenithian trilogy also get a chance for remake. VI is my long time favorite since childhood.
Thanks for all the reviews, Johnny 👊
really ? thats an old game , created for PS2 and was advanced for the time.
the 3DS version is much improved. and NEW content added.
@ I remember when it came out for PS2. I never played but really wanted. That’s why it was the first one I got years later. Zenithian trilogy games are my favourites.
Every year my older sister (who I grew up gaming with. I'm more console and she's more PC) asks what game I want for Xmas and I think this will be the one! Thanks for helping me pick my yearly game Johnny!
Even in the 80’s/90’s games localized for the US had heavy censorship. It’s a nonissue, but every game release has to have outrage surrounding it these days.
i relly like dragon quest 3 remake and i don't understand the outrage even wene the reasons are explained to me they make no sense. A type and B type outrage over that. i bought the game on steam and am loving it i see no reason for the outrage of some fans.
love how animated you are around these games... It's made me buy them in the past... respect Johnny
We love the grind we love leveling up 🤜🏻🤛🏻 best way to describe the DQ games
@@martinlangstrom8036... Dragon Quest is a turn-based JRPG. This game is a remake of ... the original. A turn-based JRPG.
Another little detail I noticed, that wasn't mentioned in the video. While outdoors, characters' hair and capes will sway and billow in the wind, but not indoors.
Ive never played a DQ game before, super stoked to finally dive in as a long time FF fan.
As an ff fan you might not like dq, it's a dungeon crawler with no story telling.
I've preordered the Collector's Edition for the PS5, since i don't have much Dragon Quest merchandise i'm not only excited for the game but for the whole package of acrylic standees and the nice box that will fill an empty spot on my shelf that has been reserved for it since it has been announced
Great review! Got my copy pre-ordered, can't wait to dive in!
Finally a review from someone's opinion I know is rooted in experience and passion, these other reviews want to wax lyrical about some bs I just want an actual fans perspective.
Kim must be so happy right now lolol
It’s worth noting that Toriyama was involved in the design changes, and they were ready before his passing.
DQ XI is one of my top 3 games of all time.
yes dragon quest 11 is a really well done game. i am really liking my play threw of dragon quest 3 i bought it on steam.this is my first time ever playing the game i never played the original. i hope after they do 1-3 at some point they do 4-6 as well.
I haven't played much of HD-2D but it's definitely recapturing the magic of my experiences playing the GBC remake that I thoroughly beat back in my late teens. I honestly can't wait to sit down with this game more.
Cant wait for tomorrow!
Same here!
Still got my original NES copies of 1, 2, 3, 4 in my completed game library!! Although they are all great games, 3 & 4 are at another lvl!
RIP Akira Toriyama Sensei 🥺🪦🎑
Why did they release dq3 first and not the first two?
I don't play RPGs but I absolutely love hearing Johnny talk about them...ill always have respect for the great diff types of games I don't play....I absolutely love your channel john! My favourite on youtube
ty for the review. been looking for a review of this by someone my age who was around for original trilogy. deff getting for my collection.
finally on PC !
And I do really want 5,6,7 remade
5 's story is epic
Johnny, before I watch the video, I just want to say that I subscribed to your channel years ago as a Dragon Quest fan. Although the series takes years between releases, I’ve always enjoyed your content, no matter what game you’re covering. Your pure passion for video games is truly contagious. This channel feels like a spark of hope. I’m having a really bad day, but seeing you review our favorite series is exactly what I needed. Thank you man, thank you for being you all these years.
Thank you!
A or B
Why can’t it just be male and female 😑
@@outrightflame4280It was then a few people with a lot of money decided to create and push the L community into everything normal people like so it can all be ruined. To what end i don't really know but i do know they keep pushing this drivel it'll be there end.
@@outrightflame4280 the A and B type is a strange choice for sure but it does not effect game play and A is male B is female. i think they did it in this case so any character can equip any armer or wepon but i could be wrong though.
Personally I have been really trying to roleplay my party and think about who these people are and what they think about things that happen in the story. This game is like a singleplayer dnd campaign if you can get into roleplaying while you play the game
I would buy this if this wasnt first person combat
the original was first person combat so it makes sense that the remake is as well.
I'm pretty sure they've already announced 1+2 for early 2025, they're releasing the entire Erdrick trilogy in HD 2D
The other strange change was removing the lips from the troll and adding an extra finger.
Yep, made him look like a Simpsons character. There's no reason to change Toriyama's art.
@@z00tythey did alot of it. Female outfits and orc among other things we don't know about yet.
Toriyama is barely laid to rest before the industry starts passing judgement on and altering his work. Not exactly timely or particularly sensitive.
@@ReginmundThe people with the most skeletons in their closet don’t seem to mind puppeteering the dead.
@@Reginmund, it would be more respectful to go to his tombstone and spit on it than they did here. Up next they will make the Sayian race a matriarchal race.
I ordered mine Johnny thanks for the awesome breakdown!!!!
Can’t wait to pick it up tomorrow
I’ve beaten DQ3 many times on Game boy color. It’s a perfect game. Beat 1-3 on switch a few months back. So I’ll support it now and play it later. Dragon age has me in a choke hold at the moment.
So stoked on this game! Side note I hope to look like you when I’m 50. Sadly I already have less hair 😂
Same here. I'm 31 and bald, and my dad is 60 with no balding.
Really excited to pick up my copy tomorrow and play what looks like the definitive version of DQ III
Cannot wait to get this game. So excited!!!
This is my first review that I'm watching for the game and I'm just over 3 hours into it. This was a sale for me back in 2021 when it was first announced so I never needed to watch a review to know I was going to buy it, I'm just watching this because I like your videos and you're an even bigger DQ fan than I am!
No one ever talks about that dragon quest came out on the year of the dragon
That too and Toriyama passed away this year and yes he helped design the Dragon ball/Ball Z/super charcters but not for Dragon Ball GT.
@@veghesther3204i thought we saw ssj4 as a silhouette when goku first went ssj3
@@veghesther3204 Actually that's a lie Toriyama designed several characters for GT including the ship they use in the Black Star Dragon Ball Saga plus he gave it the name GT
@@veghesther3204nope
Oh wow!
The body type a and b thing makes me really sad because of the original it was a boy or a girl and they were a key mechanic
It's exactly the same as before.
They did change a females top to make her less attractive. Not the same.@@AuspexAO
@@spartacuslagomorph3115 cope harder
Already planned to buy this . Probably won’t get a chance to play it until Xmas but I can wait with all my back catalog.
i had no idea this was even out yet!!! thanks for the heads up man :3
The only review that really matters.
Yo bet I'm getting it. Probably going to wait until Christmas but I'm 100% getting it!
I’m going to play this
Both I and II are slated to come out next year at some point. If I recall, Horii even stated that you'll want to play through all 3 of them in chronological order as when you beat that last game in time it'll offer a neat little reward for fans. Not sure what it'd be, but hopefully, it'll be neat.
With the censorship stuff, the thing I find most strange is that they removed "male" and "female" as a choice when you create your character.
it doesnt really change anything though. its literally a non issue. its a blink and you miss it detail the vast majority of people wouldnt even notice, it "the crowd" didnt start crying about it.
of all the things they could do that would genuinely kill the game, this is such a minimal thing, that unless you are an extremist when it comes to that crap, you will forget about that 5 minutes later.
@marcosdheleno if it is so incredibly minimal, why change it at all? Tell me, why do you think they changed it?
@@beebindy "why change it at all?"
no idea. what i do know is that, it is only a thing for the literal 5 seconds it takes to pick A or B.
its like i said, this is only an issue if you are an extremist when it comes to anything even remotely questionable.
for everyone else, this is such a non issue, the vast majority wouldnt even notice at all.
@@marcosdheleno "extremist". Nice ad hominem
I'm skipping on this one because I played enough ports of it. I really want X localized.
Sure its a nice port, and I may try it in the future if its on sale but not as a must play asap thing.
you do realize that this is not a port but a remake right however i can understand if you are burned out on a particular game.
@@tnxt262 its not a port its a remake of dragon quest 3 you do realize that right.
@@supersaiyaman11589 Thats not the point of my comment. I already played numerous ports before of the same story. Its the same game "remade" with voice acting and 3D-ish backgrounds tacked on. I tried this game recently and I am still defending my original stance. Its a good looking remake but its not for me.
