I just want to thank you for continuing to make this content. I have been going through rough times and having this ray of positivity and nostalgia every Sunday always brightens my day a bit. It helps so much.
I agree. I always used to be amazed at the power of Newspaper Comics because while a lot of them weren’t funny or even interesting, they practiced the difficult art of “consistency”. Consistency is one of the hardest things to crate in life because life is so entropic and inconsistent. So when something is consistent, it becomes a thing of beauty. Thus, art. I find this channel to be a beautiful piece of art that I only grow fonder for other the years.
There was something magical about gaming magazines. I still have a few PSM Magazines, Game Informer, and the Dreamcast Magazine or rather the magazine that came out just before Dreamcast launch. It was a skinny "issue " talking about the upcoming Dreamcast games coming out. It talked about Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi etc... as well as meeting some gaming journalists working for the magazine at the time. The one I remember the most for some reason was Francesca Reyes lol.
Hi. I’m 33 years old and I love seeing how you tell your life story through games. It has also helped me get my story out by streaming these games on my snes. I love this brother. I love your passion and drive. Keep it up
It brings me so much happiness that people remember Parasite Eve. SquareEnix are being dicks for not just using the Final Fantasy engine and reskinning a remake of PE on there. Seems easy.
Crossed Swords is amazing. I could be wrong but I think the reason that Crossed Swords 2 was never brought the arcades is because I think it was a Neo Geo CD exclusive.
I think you are right! "Crossed Swords II is a hack and slash action role-playing video game developed and published by ADK exclusively for the Neo Geo CD in Japan on May 2, 1995"
For Christmas, my wife and kids gifted me with Tekken 8 and SMTV:Vengeance (both on PS5). I also received Space Marine 2 from my extended family's "secret Santa" we do each year. I'm terrible at Tekken 8, but having fun with it; looking forward to starting the other games soon.
I really wanted to get any of the PS 30th anniversary stuff, but it all was gone in the blink of an eye. I wish Sony hadn't made it so limited, they wouldn't have had a problem selling it all. That color scheme is SOOOO iconic. Cheers to you and your family in 2025 Johnny!
Diehard Game Fan was the best of the best! When I first found your channel, I remember thinking that the content you cover and the things you are into reminded me of that magazine. Later on I would find out you were a huge fan of the magazine too and it made perfect sense to me!
I recently picked up Neva, Hitman Blood Money on the PS2 (one of my childhood games), and Jada Toys Street Fighter 2 Guile figure. I have my eyes on the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus PS3 two pack from Japan, hope to get that soon :)
Im a few years behind. Got a ps5 just before Christmas, and got a few games for christmas/ boxing week, with my Christmas money😊 elden ring, the crew motorfest, and all the recent battlefield games from 4 onward (less then $25 canadian dollars for all of them!)
I picked a Kirby Switch controller I’ve wanted for a long time with a gift card. I also recently picked up Final Fantasy Collection on Switch. Forspoken was 10$ dollars so I picked it up as a blind try game too. I also received Mario Brothership from my son in law. So many games to play in the new year. It might be the year of the backlog for me. Great video I always looks forward to seeing your content as an old gamer to start my week. I have to definitively pick up the EGM compendium now that you’re included too. That was my favorite gaming magazine growing up. Thank you again Johnny!
Johnny, you are the best!!! Calling GameFan the king of magazines just made me so happy, as a fellow fan of that publication. Keep up the amazing work!
This morning I went to my local flea market in Maryland and found the shadow of colossus guide, Metroid prime trilogy guide and metal gear solid 3 guide all like brand new condition for $30 crazy!
The diehard gamefan full set is a total of 88 and I have 79. Some of them are expensive like the first one you have but the rarest is the volume 7 issue 4 only sold or given away at E3, 50 copies apparently. Love the magazine.
So glad i kept all my video game mags. I have 11 years of Gamepro. Still have a couple EGM when they had the huge 250 page issues! Also love their annual buying guides. Happy New Year!
I KNEW IT! Before you even revealed the cover. I was like, "It's gonna be Die Hard Gamefan!" Loved that mag back in the day! Excellent import reviews and great screencaps! I have a digi-archive of most of the issues somewhere on my hard drive! great buy!
I grew up in the UK, but occasionally I would see Game Fan for sale in the News Agents and I would always pick up despite the mark up for it being an imported magazine. Easily the best!
I was there too for the original PS and was fixated on owning the new anniversary controller. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough during store restocks and had to pay a premium on eBay for one.
For Christmas, I got Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and Like a Dragon: infinite Wealth. I would like to have a 30th Anniversary Controller. It looks so nice.
I finally got a Switch OLED and love how Splatoon looks on it. I don’t think I have heard you talk about Splatoon before but I probably missed it. And I got Sega Ages Phantasy star. In your honor. Love the randomness of your new games. Love seeing content on games I know little to nothing about. I mean it.
How is one rpg lover supposed to play all these amazing rpgs we got this year. Not to mention all the other action rpg games. We living in a renaissance
I grabbed Tomba on the Switch and Armored Core VI Fires Of Rubicon on pc 😄 my way of reminiscing on the PS1 days. I also recently played through RE 1, 2 and some of 3. We love the older retro consoles but the PS1 era is something special. Cheers, Johnny and everyone
For Christmas I received Astro Bot and Sea of Stars. Both have been incredible so far. Also, recently picked up Gran Turismo 7 because it was on Rollback for $20 at Walmart. Enjoying all of them
I actually bought some games and some anime recently. I got Fantasian Neo Dimension which I will finally have later today after a weird shipping delay, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle,Witch Spring R,Clive and Wrench,Atelier Sophie 2 which i am very happy to finally have in my Atelier collection and Astral Chain.
Bought a PSVR2 and I am blown away by the huge difference compared to the first one. Also picked up Gran Turismo 7, Tears Of the Kingdom, Marvel vs Capcom Collection, and FF7 Rebirth during Black Friday. Hopefully I get through them all. 👍
Hello Johnny ! I can just sum it up real quickly and say that I finally got my own Switch, and have bought and downloaded games like there’s no tomorrow. Retirement is just on the horizon (3 1/2 years) and I want both my handheld , laptop and stationary be loaded to the brim. Currently playing ”Blasphemous”. Happy new year !
Johny I have been following you for many years and you have inspired me many things and given me a lot of joy too and I am very grateful, if there is one thing I can give you in return it is to always like, follow and share your content as a form of gratitude. Two months ago I started sharing my pickups too, with the same intention, spreading the love for this hobby. Who knows, maybe I can also transmit to other people the joy that you transmit to me? Love you man, thanks.
Nausicca is my second favourite of Miyazaki’s after Princess Mononoke! On new finds… I recently saw your prior year video about Ys X and it inspired me to get that one. Just getting into it and enjoying!
Recently picked up Nightfire on GC, Lost Dimension on PS3, Mega Man Maverick Hunter PSP, and Radiant Silvergun on Switch. Now I need to find the time to play them!
I have three teenage kids so Xmas is always spent on them. I’ve been struggling along with a PS4 Pro for years (even though I bought a PS5 for each of my kids years ago now). My new fiancé bought me a PS5 for Xmas as a total surprise 🎉 Playing Elden Ring, very hard but loving it
Yeah Diehard was the best monthly fix on all the new games. I started with issue 2. Went looking for issue 1 but never found it on the stands. It was a low print run. Kicking myself for selling them all years ago to a dude in Canada. 😢
Man was just looking back at your old videos, crazy how far you've come. Good stuff, I would love check out your game room 😂 the stuff you got is so cool
Die Hard Gamefan was THE best. The Editor In Chief (I think his name was Dave Halverson) was an absolute joy to read. His love for the craft of game-making always left an impression on me. Years later he (I think I’m right on this) brought out Play Magazine, which carried on that same enthusiasm until it eventually went out of print.
Seeing cross sword on game sack’s neo geo cd helped push me over on buying a neo geo cd (top loader) many years ago. I still have both games and the system. I had fun with the games even if it does get repetitive.
Got a jaguar for Christmas after wanting one for ages, along with a few games for it, plus a Neo Geo CD and an Atari XEGS on the way using some post Christmas funds!
I'll be honest, I've been playing fewer games these days and have become way more passionate about building Gundam model kits. Just got an air compressor the other day and want to learn out to airbrush next ;)
🫡 Great Episode! Your story with Cross Swords and GameFan was an Awesome Story! So nostalgic it brought me back to my youth playing that game and reading the mags!
A game I just missed at a time when I was not playing as much Nintendo ( regret this) was Twilight Princess, I saw the video you and Rob made about memories of it ( came up in my suggested) well I have it for the Wii U so I started the HD version ( been in my collection for awhile, just never got to it). I just picked up Skyward Sword HD as well and will play that next. My son and I continue to get many hours out of Lego Starwars Skywalker Saga, fun playing together. Thanks for the year of videos. One interesting thing about Hayao Miyazaki's Daydream Data Notes book is its connection to video games. Just a heads up for everyone, the physical version of Tomba by limited run apparently has a version with a game breaking bug on cart. This is despite Lrg claiming it would be patched by release.
I just recently got back into games! I downloaded the demo to Fantasian on the PS5 and I have to have it! I don't see it living up to Lost Odyssey but it brings the feels back for me. Unfortunately saving all my money for the Switch 2 announcement. 😊
I got Fantasian, and I am loving it so far. Of course the music and story so far are great too.
I got some bangers on PS5 for Christmas. Black Myth Wukong, Silent Hill 2, Metaphor: Refantazio and Space Marine 2. I started Black Myth and I'm loving it, I can't wait to get into the others!
In December I picked up Wayfinder Echoes. Really enjoying it! I'd be interested to hear if it's on your radar because there are a lot of similarities to PSO.
My brother who doesn't really play video games got himself the mod retro chromatic game Boy . Just for tetris. Cracks me up, so I bought one because it's pretty darn nice. Playing through Metroid 2 again, just like I'm 9 years old
Absolutely LOVED Diehard Gamefan growing up. Just the fact that this was a magazine done by actual video game fans was really just the icing on the cake. Not to mention they were also the kinda of people that got me into Neon Genesis Evangelion in their AnimeFan segments (Neon Genesis Evangelion is my numeral uno favorite anime next to Ghost in the Shell btw).
11:46 once I learned that truth a few years ago, I never pre-ordered from limited run again. What ends up happening is limited run honors orders from major companies like Amazon, best buy, and the like. They end up getting their orders and don't sell them until around the time you would get your pre-order if not sooner. The only reason I want to pre-order from LR is for the special edition stuff, which may or may not be worth it.
Over the holidays I've been reading the twilight princess manga. Picked up the full boxset when that released a couple months ago and have been loving it!

Lol Johnny is awesome. He is like that cool uncle you wish you always had.
You got this, just remember more people care about you than you could ever imagine
Great stuff! I was spoiled at Christmas and my backlog continues to grow!
I was 50/50 about getting Neo: Fantasian. But once again, Johnny has a way of changing my mind to 100%

I finally got a ps5 so I’m diving into the goodness ! Astrobot has been huge in my house.

A six-pack and Happy Console Gamer, that's life! I am playing Baldur's Gate 1 right now, a grind of a game! Happy New Year, Johnny!

This is despite Lrg claiming it would be patched by release.
I got Tomba! and the SMT V vinyl soundtrack as well!
I just recently got back into games! I downloaded the demo to Fantasian on the PS5 and I have to have it! I don't see it living up to Lost Odyssey but it brings the feels back for me. Unfortunately saving all my money for the Switch 2 announcement. 😊
