Camped at that exact same spot on the Toccoa back in 93 or 94. River was half frozen over and it sleeted and snowed on the drive up there from Atlanta, and I think it snowed again overnight. We originally had a loop trip planned out but just made it an in and out because of the weather. Looks like you enjoyed your hike!

Yes, I did very much enjoy this hike so far. I'm set to hit the trail again in September to finish it. Hiking in the winter is challenging but, also can be very beautiful. I hope you get to head back out there. Thanks for watching.

High, are you looking to old trees and dead limbs, who are in the near, so that they can not fall down on your tent, if it get more windy ? Kindly Fiete

Hi, yes. I usually look at the base of a tree and see if there are any visible cracks or stress marks in the bark (If any bark) then glance up the tree to see where the 'dead' branches start. If the whole tree looks like you can literally push it over with your hands then I avoid that one at all cost. I also pay attention to wind direction and try to ascertain which direction a known storm will blow in from. If you can figure this out then you know to watch out for trees that are 'up wind' from you. Note: a tree that LOOKS a safe distance away may not be. Some trees are taller than they look and if they were to fall are 'longer' than you would think. Just try to be mindful of potential 'dead' trees and you'll be fine. :)
      Thanks for watching!

Did you use your Samsung Galaxy 8 for your thru hike?

Yes I did. It did extremely well.
I will say the battery life has dramatically dropped since the "oreo" OS update. This is a reported issue that i still haven't seen a fix for. I doubt they'll ever patch it.

I'm trying to understand where the water is in my guidebooks. How did you map out water location

Water is difficult to plan. I can't really give you any pointers for planning but, I can tell you what I did. Water in the guide should be a water drop symbol. Solid means reliable, half or empty means unreliable (I think) I don't have the guide with me right now so I will have to confirm later. For planning my water stops I just added my target mileage for the day to where I was (usually around 15 miles per day), looked to see if there was a camp spot around that mileage and if it had water close by. I always try to camp near a reliable source. For water throughout the day, I would check my guide for the next water source within about 5 miles at least. If there wasn't going to be one for a long stretch then before I broke camp (if I camped at water) or at the first sign of water even if it wasn't marked in the guide I would load up. Makes for a heavier walk but, I'd rather be a little tired than thirsty. I mostly just winged it from what the guide shown. If you're really uncertain I suggest when you see water grab it. :) It never hurts.
