  • This video is a guide to logistics and resupply for a thru-hike of the Benton MacKaye Trail. In this video I discuss (1) the pros and cons of hiking northbound vs. southbound, (2) getting to and from the trail, (3) navigation, (4) required permits and camping, (5) resupply, (6) water availability, and (7) food storage. You can also see my Benton MacKaye Trail Thru-Hike Gear List below.

Hey Folks! Sorry I talked so fast through this one. Looking back it would seem that I might have consumed about 20 cups of coffee before filming.... It's something I'm working on! I'll try and slow my mouth down in future videos. In one section I actually double checked that I hadn't accidentally changed the speed setting in final cut! What's life if you can't laugh at yourself?

I thought it was very well done and your cadence made for a shorter video which is always appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together. Craig.

I thought your delivery was great. Maybe the beer I was drinking while watching counteracted your coffee.

An aquaintenance of mine just finished his BMT thruhike. He loved the trail, but was dissappointed that he only ran into 2 dayhikers. There were no other backpackers. He was very dissappointed after all the hoopla he heard about the BMT, he could only find one store that offered stickers. As he said, I didn't even get the t-shirt. So yes, if solitude is your conquest, definately the trail for you.

Excellent information and delivery; particularly all the points to verify before sending a mail drop! I am musing the full AT / BMT loop (that little 500 miler rocker is calling) and found this video extremely helpful! --Now to watch your Batram one, as that's also on the list...

Thank you for your series. Subscribing! My current plan is to LASH the AT NOBO starting 4/6 from Amicalola, hoping to get to Damascus, but I’m a little concerned about the sheer number of people on the trail at that time. The BMT is an intriguing option. If you have any recommendations I’d love to hear them.

If you’re looking for more of a solo experience (though you’ll see some other hikers), the BMT is a great trail. The AT will have more people, but that’s just the AT…. Both are great options, I think it just comes down to the experience you want. Hopefully that makes sense.

@@UnfetteredFootstepsI’ve taken your and others’ recommendations, and three of us will be hiking the BMT northbound in a few days. We’ve booked 2 sets of park reservations 2 days apart just in case we’re delayed.
