I love this! I have lots of WIPS but I also finish lots of things regularly. If I get bored, I move onto another WIP. If I’m tired I do something easy. Sometimes I need to feel progress so I work on a crochet WIP or a worsted weight WIP. Sometimes I have a WIP that I put in “time out” because I’m not sure it’s working out how I want and need to think about for awhile before deciding what I need to change about it or if I should frog it. Then while working on a vanilla sock my mind is free to work on that unresolved WIP. I have a fingering weight pastel cable sweater I only work on during the summer. It might take a couple more years to finish but I don’t care. If I really want the item I know I can focus and get it done but in winter I have other things I would rather do. DO NOT feel bad about your crafting. It is to bring you joy and if Ian item isn’t, I just pick something else up. I think my WIP sweet spot is 10-25. Less than 10 I start a cast on party😅
I love it when the YT algorithm works!!! We moved to a (much smaller house) and I shoved all my knit WIPs in several large plastic containers. Maybe it's time to address them!
The algorithm seems to have brought a lot of happy folk my way this past fortnight and it's so lovely to get to know you! Good luck with your WIP containers. It's good fun to look at them all!
Ah thank you so much!! The algorithm has been kind to me this week and it's wonderful to meet so many new friendly faces. You're most welcome here and I hope you enjoy! xx
I think you’ve broken the Guinness World Book of Records for knitting and crochet works in progress. 😂. You are going to be very, very busy. Loved the video.❤
Hello Gemma, your video just popped up and I’m excited to follow you. Today is 11/21/24 and I am from Arizona. You remind me of myself because if I run into a problem with a pattern or my ability to understand it, I never finish it. I’m sorry about your little daughter. I lost my granddaughter, Saffron, in 2022. She was 4 yrs old. I love all your projects and you have challenged me to pull out all my WIPS. Good luck with yours.😊
Hi Pamela thank you for joining me and for sharing your precious Saffron with me. She and Lara would be about the same age. Sending you and the rest of Saffron's family the warmest of wishes and a virtual hug. Good luck with your WiPs too! xx
What a great podcast, thank you for sharing your projects, thoughts and conversation. I love how you describe your crafting as a menu, I completely get it! I've managed to organise a few of my project bags, frogged a couple of wips (repurposing the yarn), identified a couple that literally just need sewing up, found 3 tape measures and numerous needle tips that have been hiding just while watching. Next task, organising my knitting needles 😀 Hope you are now on the mend and feeling much better. x
I'm so glad you've enjoyed it. Why is it that we just leave the sewing up? Glad to have kept you company while you have your own sort out. it's amazing how many tape measures lurk. I'm doing much better, thank you xx
I have no idea how many WIPs I have. I just work on whatever makes my heart happy at that moment and if anyone else doesn't like it....well, that sounds like a them problem :) All your projects look wonderful.
Hear Hear! When I ran the yarn shop my only guideline for customers was: do what makes your heart sing. Whether they were agonising over a new cast on, or what colours they "should" pick. I didn't know how many I had until I did this either hehe and thank you very much, I think they're wonderful too. xx
PS - Im laughing as I watch because I have quite the affinity for project bags, too! Part of my Stephen West order included THREE project bags. Love them. My husband is watching the collection suspiciously as he knows that bags often include yarn, and he’s not sure when he’ll have to do the intervention.
No intervention needed - you're insulating your house and cutting down on energy bills therefore saving you both money! I used to make project bags when I started out, and I'm lucky enough to have some makers as friends who have given me lovely gifts over the years. I do find it hard to resist The Little Grey Girl's bags though and Elderflower Stitches is on my bag bucket list!
So fun seeing all your projects! I, too, have many WIPs! I like variety and usually happily hop from project to project. With Christmas around the corner, I’m feeling a bit of a crunch to focus on a few (wink - wink) makes! I’m not panicking yet… I REALLY struggle with frogging anything and can’t bring myself to recommend frogging anyone’s hard work! All the best to you in making those hard decisions. We crochet (or knit) for enjoyment! Frog or continue on according to how the project adds to or detracts from your joy.
When I’m making an afghan for a certain bed I make a foundation chain and lay it on the bed. I make it longer than I think I need it. I then start the first row. I keep checking til it gets the right width. I then go to the end of the chain and undue it until I get to where I stopped the first row. Works great!
Well that is genius and also a lot of common sense. Sadly I wasn't blessed with much (any) common sense so the chaos continues hehe. If I EVER finish this blanket I'll definitely use your tip for next time xx
I have not heard this method before I know you can chain as you go into the base of the previous stitch too but I usually do a foundation chain of 100 to 110 for my kids or lap blankets I've not done a larger bed blanket with foundation row yet but I have planned for a tartan and it will be done that way.
Thank you, you help me to feel better. Never understand people making unkind comments, not cool. I’m a new subscribers & look forward to more. So sorry about your little girl! ❤
You popped up on my feed, really enjoyed going through your wips , apart from long term scrappy blankets I'm down to 2 pairs of socks! My 18 yr old nephew would like a jumper, so I'm swatching to see what works for a very old pattern. I can remember my dad gardening in one when i was little now 51 so probably about my age if it was his gardening one then.
Oh how lovely that you can recreate such a special jumper for your nephew. I love that older teens come back to hand-knits - it seems to be a trend. Happy making and I hope you'll join me again soon! x
I know I have a ton of WIPs. A while ago I went through quite a few, put them each in their own bag and then put all the bags into a bin. During that process I also pulled needles out of things I knew I wouldn't finish. It can be fun to go through unfinished projects. As a knitter who is still learning to crochet and Tunisian crochet, going through projects is great. Discarding ones you don't plan on finishing can be very helpful because suddenly you have a whole bunch of needles free for new projects! By the way, this was my first time watching your channel and I am now a subscriber so you know I enjoyed it.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! A metric ton or a metaphorical ton that's the question. 😉🤣You raise a very good point about freeing needles for new cast ons x
Just discovered your channel with this episode ( I know - where have I been??!). Really great to find someone who like me enjoys a smorgasbord of WIPs ( though I can’t remember the last time I counted how many). Also enjoy that you use a mixture of commercial and posh yarn and that you knit for children, husband etc as well as yourself. Thank you!
Welcome!! So glad you've found me and enjoy the smorgasbord of WiPs and materials! It's a pretty family friendly channel this so you'll find me baking with my son, or sewing for him, as well as the knitting and crochet stuff. What do you like to make with? x
Finally, someone with more WIPs than me! I spent the entire video working on one of mine, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you. I'm working on: * Sharon's Glamping Blanket * Second sock of a pair * Frog and Toad w/clothes * two harry potter woobles kits * A Sophie Scarf All of the above are meant to be Christmas gifts (wish me luck!). I also have started two sweaters for myself, but I think I'm going to frog them both and start over on a different one. Thanks for helping me get focused!! Hope you're feeling better!!
Hello and welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed your time with me and hurrah for finding evidence that your WiPs really aren't that bad. Best of luck and power to your elbows for that Christmas gift list! I am feeling a bit better thank you. Hope you'll join me again xx
haha I love your enthusiasm and so glad you're enjoying it., I do now have some empty bags after frogging some and the temptation to cast on new adventures is HIGH
So glad you enjoyed it and welcome to my little corner of the internet! I'm getting there, thank you although I still bark a bit! Bright eyed and bushy tailed for this week's episode. xx
Walk of shame! My friend calls it the Isle of Unloved Projects because she has so many. I keep thinking about my projects that are scattered throughout my home. It's crazy. I'm going to say you have 35 projects. I'll see if you have any as old as the ones I have. ETA: I was pretty close!! I have a lot of projects, as well. Looking through my Ravelry Projects, I have 7 pair of socks, 11 shawls, 2 blankets, and have started two new projects for the holidays with several others in the planning stages. I'm working on the ones I need to ship first. Thanks for letting me know Felici is back!! I didn't know it and am very excited to see all the stripes.
You're welcome! I've a friend travelling to the states soon and the temptation to ask them to pick some up for me is HIGH! Your guess was pretty close indeed. I think my oldest ones are 5 years old at the moment. I did frog my oldest a year or so ago just before it turned 20. I wasn't having that haha! The isle of unloved projects sounds like a very poetic way of describing it, although I feel sad for the projects now! Maybe that guilt will urge me to work on a few more haha xx
New subscriber here!! I just loved this video, made me happy to see someone with tons of wips like me. I currently have 32! I love to cast on and I definitely love having a variety to choose from, sometimes you just need choices haha. I hope no one is rude because I really enjoyed your wip parade and hope you do it again sometime in the future. Hope you are feeling better now and I wish you luck on Christmas gift knitting. Looking forward to your vlogmas videos. 😊💖
Sat 23 November and I've just stumbled on your podcast for the first time. Really spooky as I am surrounded by my project bags having a grand sort out of wips as well so the title caught my eye! Am now listening/watching you as we both get busy on the same task. 😀
Just found your channel, loved your wip video I have a lots of wips I have to be in the mood to work on a project so the variety is good, or in my case this weekend I wanted something simple, so I cast on a plain basic cowl and finished it this morning. 🥰
Welcome! I'm so glad you've enjoyed it and thank you for sharing how you like to craft. Those quick hits can be so satisfying in amongst the longer term projects x
My resolution for the new year is to do a WIP evaluation. They seem to be tucked in every nook and cranny. I might even have more than you! I think you need to pass along the mohair sweater. Health first! I think you will be unable to wear it and it will just haunt you from the drawer. But don't frog it (it will be tough on your breathing). Just pass it along to another knitter roughly your size. Then they can decide to frog or finish.
New subscriber here. I love wip videos. I love seeing all the different projects and the different colours, yarns etc everyone uses. I don’t know why anyone would judge such a harmless way of crafting. I like to track all my wips and yarn in and out but other than trying to get my stash down I really don’t care how many wips I have. Also don’t care how much stash anyone has to each their own as long as they are loving it. I use a junk journal I made to track my knitting so I can incorporate another craft I love 🙂 wishing you luck on Xmas gifts and hopefully no one puts you off of making wip parade videos!
Welcome! Oh what's a junk journal? I've never heard of it before but sounds fun - not that I need another thing to do hehe. I agree it's fun to see how everyone's different. xx
This was wonderful!! I feel so much better about my wips. I did this earlier in the year. I frogged 3 and liberated the needles, plus I finished two. Felt so good !
I have quite a few project I am working on. In the sweaters for your son, I would consider frogging the smaller of the two sweaters and making it in a bigger size. Children grow so fast. You have lovely projects! ❤
You're not kidding - I was watching last year's vlogmas with Robin this morning to get in the festive mood and yep how much changes so quickly. I do think the Sibling is going to be re-knit. Thanks so much for spending time with me xx
Just subscribed. I have 1 blanket I only need to weave the ends, one blanket I am about 5 more rounds to finishing, one scarf I am knitting (I'm new to knitting), one scarf in Tunisian that I'm almost finished, a cardigan I am doing in bulky 6 homespun yarn (it's very heavy), and some amigurumi I am putting on Etsy to see if I can sell. I think that's all, but honestly, who knows 😅
Enjoyed seeing your projects and knitting, i cant watch people knitting whilst i am as it throws me off 😂 I'm making a simple ribbed v neck cardigan for my granddaughter, almost finished the main knitting, just got to try not to get stuck on the joining and button band bit! Next on my list is a hat to match from the leftover yarn, t bag shape with cables and faux fur pom poms. After that is a Dog Star for her, it tones with the cardi. She has a birthday at the end of January, so if i dont make xmas i can aim for that. I've two crochet WIP, both blankets, a daisy one for gd and an Aria one for me. I prefer to crochet in summer, no idea why! That's going to keep me busy for a while! Hope you feel better soon 💕
Hehe I've been known to start knitting stocking stitch instead of rib if someone is on the box or at a knit group. You're at the same stage as me with the Chime now - just the sleeve cap to finish then the dreaded sewing and button bands. How handy that she has a birthday at the end of Jan. Good luck with your WiPs and hope to see you here again soon! xx
I hope that you are feeling better! I am knitting the same two Christmas WYS yarns as you are, these will be my first Christmas socks. The Vintage Tinsel was very sparkly on camera - so pretty! I think WIPs and UFOs are a person by person thing, for me they vary widely. Right now I feel overwhelmed so I’m working on finishing some. At other times they won’t bother me at all. I am learning to frog projects where I was more interested in a new technique or a new yarn combo than I am in the actual object itself. But I’ll never be a one project maker, I love variety.
I am feeling much better, thank you! Still a little husky but managed to record another episode today! It really is super sparkly I can't wait for us all to wear them. Variety is the spice of life. Enjoy! x
wow thats an impressive amount of whips, you must have a lot of cable needles to keep them on lol thank you for sharing x everyone crafts in their own way, sad to hear you have had some negitivity in comments, hope you feel better soon x
Don't forget I ran a yarn shop for 4 years so cables were in easy supply! I use mostly interchangeables which makes it probably too easy to swap out projects. Just unscrew the tips, purchase another cable for a quid or so and off you go! Actually this video has been really lovely in the comment section. I was put off WIP videos by past experiences but you've all been so wonderful! xx
Hi Gemma. Just found your channel and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all your wips. As I’m in bed for the third day running I am now going to binge watch your other videos 😂
Hello Carol! Oh no I hope you're not too poorly but glad I can offer some diversion for you. There are a fair few videos on there 🤣perhaps don't go further back than the start of the year if you want somewhere to start? Entirely up to you of course! Hope you feel better very soon xxx
I absolutely love the yellow train car hanging out on the couch in this video! My older son is the same age as Robin and it's so hard to keep a handle on all the little toys. Also, I admire your courage in confronting all the WIPs that have been hiding in corners around the house
Haha yes trains are everywhere in this house and I'm absolutely loving the chaos that toddlerhood brings. And thank you! Considering some of them have been giving me side eye for a while it was quite brave haha.
WIP guess 40 I wouldnt frog the ghost, you can always sew the arms on once your finished OR grab the other end of the yarn to make the arms to crochet them in (have done both options when crocheting myself)
First time viewer, loved all your WIPs! Love your enthousiasm and really like all the socks. I just casted on a bulky weight basic raglan sweater and while I'm not a bulky weight girl, I couldn't resist the hot pink color of this yarn. Will be back soon, see you next time!
Hi Gemma! For some reason the TH-cam algorithm decided I needed to see this video and I totally can relate! I recently decided to gather all my wips and I had 40! I now have the urge to purge and managed to finish a few and frog a few and I’m down to about 35 tho there are definitely a couple more I can finish and frog. I’m trying not to start anything new in Nov and myy Dec plans are to continue with finishing wips, cast on my advent socks and maybe a couple of little ornaments and see what I can get down to by the end of the year. Good luck with your wips and I hope you are feeling better!
Hello! Ah the algorithm is doing something right for once haha. You're very welcome here and I love the poetic way you write. Urge to purge! It's awesome to meet someone else who can finish a few and frog a few and still have upwards of 30. Thanks very much I'm getting there xx
Thank God, someone with more WIPs than me!! Mine are piling up because I got excited about something else, forgot the hook or patten, or got too tight in the middle and I have to frog 😢. Love to see l’m not the only one with a pile of project bags!
Happy to provide company in multi-wips. I can totally relate to a lot of your reasons. I also think I have more time and can work faster than I do and can haha x
As you know, im somewhat of a WIP fan myself but i doubt ill ever reach your level 😂 Seeing all of your lovely projects has me itching to cast new things on! Maybe in 2025 I'll live dangerously and become a serial caster onner.
I have too many WIPs to keep track of. I’m slowly making my way through different parts of the house to decide what I’m doing with each one. Some have been in progress for years as they are just using scraps from other projects. Also, for socks, the Eye of Partridge is my go to heel.
I think it may well become mine too. I love the way it looks, it's not complicated at all, and I think it will wear better. I smiled imagining you on your journey of discovery through the house as that's what I was doing last Monday morning haha x
Omgosh!! Don't start a new project until you finish the first project is my motto! That way I feel accomplished and people aren't waiting years for their gifts!! 😂
I used to be a monogamous knitter. I decided to try having multiple wips at once and I became unhappy after 2-3 projects depending on the mix. I also tend to stop a project when I make a mistake and either don't know how or don't feel like frogging and fixing at the time, so that added to the number. That said, I don't give two shits about how many WIPs and HOs someone has. Not sure why people feel passionate about it. If you are happy with 30+ then go, girl!
Right?! Each to their own and that's the beauty of it! I think if I had multiples that had a deadline, THAT would get overwhelming. And I do sometimes get decision paralysis, but for the most part I'm happy plodding along. I started of monogamous years ago, that all changed in around 2017 when my MH meant it became hard to focus on one thing and I just dipped into things a little at a time. I love that you've found what works for you xx
On the sibling sweater, you said you cast on w the wrong color order, so my vote, 🐸 and make the correct size and color lol unless you don’t really mind the color order, also I believe there was a possibility that it may have a mistake (ish, maybe)… so best to do it now b4 it’s so much more knitting. I actually enjoyed the wip parade, I typically have 20-40 that I cycle through at any given time. Some I love but just don’t feel like this year lol.
I think you're right re the Sibling Sweater. And yes with you on the WiPs - it's an active engagement process so only right you need to feel like it xx
Beautiful projects, all and each of them! I personally never regret frogging the unfinished/hibernated ones when they are around for quite some time, I love fresh starts :)
Thank you so much! That's really good to hear, I do worry about "releasing" the ones that have been hanging around a while in case I regret it or somehow feel like I've failed the project, but you're right a fresh start is as good as a rest. I've now frogged 6 in total and feel absolutely no regret about them so there's hope!
Ah thank you so much! I'm so glad you've enjoyed your first visit. Got to love a dishcloth. I'm a recent convert and everyone's getting some for Christmas. What makes them vintage is it a pattern? x
I counted my WIPs at 29. I did WIP review as well just recently and earmarked 10 that are very close to finishing so those are on my radar. I am trying to get as many things off the needles before the 12 castons of Christmas start. So far I have finished 3 jumpers and 1 cardie. Currently on sleeve island on Daft Days and mattress stitching up the side seams of a very dark grey top. My eyes can only take staring at it for so long and then I have to walk away and come back in small bites. I hope you get all the knitting and crochet done for your projects. xx
Welcome fellow multi-wipper! Oh what a good idea to focus on ones that are almost there. Congrats on your recent finishes - you'll be cosy for winter. 12 castons of Christmas?! Why do I not know about this please tell me more. xx
@@TheMidnightDyery Angela from the Yarn N Yarns podcast has been hosting this 12 castons for Christmas for quite a few years. You cast on up to 12 new projects between Christmas and Jan 31st (those where the rules last year) so you are set up for the coming year. She has past episodes posted on her TH-cam channel. Once the current cardigan is done - I will only be moving 3 of my castons last year forward so I call that a win win. xx
Oh wonderful! A new cast on party AND a new to me channel to check out. Thank you so much! Definitely need to cast on 12, can't be lacking in Wips for 2025. 3 out of 12? That's amazing!!!
I’m guessing that you have about 23 WIPs. I have 3 knitting projects and 2 crochet projects in progress right now. That’s after a concerted effort to reduce my previous set of projects which was in the neighborhood of 15.
Go for it! It's so much fun you won't regret it. Get down to your LYS for an in-person lesson, or Very Pink Knits here on TH-cam has some great tutorials. I've got a couple and working on more but it's...well... a work in progress! 🤣
Forgot to comment but I guessed 21. Loved seeing all your Projects and it's lovely seeing im not the only one who has many things on the go. Life would be boring otherwise 😆 hooe you feel better soon Gemma x
Thank you!! I got dressed today for the first time since recording this video back on Monday morning but the pjs are calling again haha. Hurrah for another multi wip lover!
I wish people wouldn't be so judgmental about what other people do. Some people like to finish a project before they start another. Others have loads of different kinds of craft projects on the go. I have a scrap Afghan bedcover on the go which has taken me 3 years so far partly because summer came and it got too warm to work on, partly because I run out of scraps to use up and partly because I run out of enthusiasm for it for a while or other more urgent things take precedence. It's up to you how many things you have on the hook /needles/ sewing machine etc. If everyone was the same, what a boring world we would live in❤. Just a thought with the mohair...it's not worth making yourself ill over. Either frog it and do a swap with someone you know who can use it, or sell the yarn on ravelry, market place, ebay or any other site you may have sold something on.That would be my suggestion. My other one would be to finish the Christmas socks for your little boy as you've already done one. They're so small it wouldn't take long to make another. 2 WIPs sorted then you can cast on another 2😂😂🤗.
Me too! Luckily almost everyone in the comments this time has been perfectly lovely and not come across as critical, while being able to share their own crafting preferences, which are often different to mine. I think I should do the Christmas sock for Robin next, yes, now to find where on earth I've put the sparkly green mini! 🎉😂
Hi. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Your video popped up by chance because I watch a lot of knitting/ crochet channels. I'm mainly a knitter but I also crochet, sew ( not clothes though) and whatever else takes my fancy. My kids think I've got ADHD because sometimes I get obsessed with doing something and other times I flit from one thing to the next because I get bored. I'm too old to bother with a diagnosis (I'm 71 next month) but my son sent me an online test and the result was I do have ADHD. That does explain a lot!!! both to me and to my kids!!! I have 4 and 6 grandkids. I've knitted for all of them at some point but my youngest grandchild is 13 now so a lot of my projects are for charity now. I have subbed by the way... although I must admit I am not a sock knitter!!
My goal this year was to get my wips into a single digit number. Not sure I’ll make it- 😂- I’m not counting the mountain of projects until January 1!!!
Ive got a few more wips than I would like to admit. Currently I'm working on a Spark Cardi by Andrea Mowry. Was knitting on it, fell asleap, and woke to your vlog😂. New subscriber here now. Do you fall asleap with vlogs on ever?
Just found you and I loved your video…I’m at 4 projects but with an additional one on the naughty step (jumper and it’s too small eeekkk…need to frog back to sleeve separation) 😅
So sorry you're feeling so rubbish - that was a marathon podcast to do when you were ill! I tend to be a fairly monogamous knitter and am currently feverishly knitting lots of gift knits for Christmas. I've been more or less housebound since a knee replacement op (finished one and half hats in hospital) five weeks ago so I may stand a chance of getting them all done for once. Definitely going to be tight though!
As long as it's just your knitting that's feverish! Being ill is rubbish, zero stars, would not recommend 🤣 Hope your knee is healing nicely and you get your knits done. x
I have I think a dozen or so wips, but my to make list is huge. I have 6 kids and study so I have too many commitments outside of my craft to commit to more.I have a pair of mits for my 12 yo daughter I am considering frogging a pair of socks where I have made a mistake with my cables I have no idea how to fix 2 other pair of socks, one for me and one for my 7yo, a jumper for my 19yo daughter a shawl for me and a cardigan for me. I also have four crochet blankets on the go so 11
haha you're not wrong! I used to make and sell project bags so three of them are from my collection, and others were gifts from friends and hubby for birthdays and xmases. I still don't have enough bags for all the wips that would be seriously impressive I think hehe so bags for life for the win! x
Hi Gemma, Vicks Vapor rub in the bottom of your feet with socks and you will stop coughing. Works for me everytime. For the ghost - use the other end of the ball to make the arms, attach them and keep going with it, make Robin another one next year😉. I do think the next size up for the sibling top and Thomas top is a good idea. I think doing as you suggested for all the others is a good idea. For the mohair project, find a lovely knitter who loves mohair and gift them the yarn and project. Cast in the same pattern with a special yarn that won’t make you unwell, it’s not worth continuing with it. I have a lot of WIPs at the moment and I keep casting on new ones but I know soon, I will have a good time finishing them all. I have enjoyed watching the video. Hope you feel better soon. Hugs from Adelaide 💙
Vicks! You're a genius I actually have some of that somewhere. Off to find the rub and some socks. Thanks as always for spending time with me, and for your feedback on the projects. I think realistically you are right, I need to cast on bigger sizes xx
@ I think you will enjoy re-casting on the project knowing they will be able to be worn longer by the intended recipient. You are one of my favourite TH-camr, I have stopped watching a podcast to watch yours, I love the down to earth, not scripted, relaxed vibe, just hitting all the right spots😊. Hope you found the Vicks. Hugs from Adelaide 💙
That is so incredibly kind thank you! I couldn't do a script if my life depended on it haha. And I think you're absolutely right about re-casting them on. It will alleviate the pressure to finish too. Plus we all know how much I love a cast on. I did! And I actually slept last night - feel like an almost new woman. Off to record the next episode shortly. x
I've heard a LOT of good things about Yarnsmiths but have yet to sample the delights. If you consider my sock wips as a percentage representation of my sock yarn you can probably guess why 🤣
2min 55 sec my guess is 21 1hr 6mins 😂😂😂😂😂 okay so I under estimated just a little! I love all the WIPs. For anything your unsure of wait till the middle of December and then if they are presents? Frog them and join the yarn n yarn 12 cast ons. You have kept me company while frantically finishing a knitted advent calendar for a swap group. 😅 I'm using inherited acrylic yarn that is fluffy and squeaks as you knit. I love swaps like this for finding ways of using yarn I would struggle to wear. For the mohair could you do a WIP exchange with a friend? They get the mohair and you get to remove something that won't land you in A&E. I love your anniversary shawl idea, I think it sounds like a way of marking your daughters memory each day and then it can wrap you up in all of the love you share with her ❤ I hope the pj's and bed helped with the chesty cold 😊 Thank you as always for the video xx
Yeah I think once you add the ones I found it ended up being 40 before frogging! A knitted advent calendar sounds like quite the undertaking and what a great use for squeaky yarn. Are you able to share what you've made? or will it spoil the surprise. Still coughing unfortunately and the Dr told me not to use my inhaler so the mohair is definitely out for a while! Thanks as always for spending time with me xx
My original guess is 23 but I know I have had around 30 before... Going to grab a cup of tea and get to watching. Also I spy the Scottie dog bag I made back in 2020 for your birthday 😊
Ok so my second guess of 30 wasn't far off then... I couldn't work out if you were counting the ones you were frogging. I have a question about the mohair jumper, is it just working with the fibre that affects your chest or would wearing it also affects your chest? Is it therefore something that could be frogged or gifted perhaps? Obviously just thinking of health and is it worth the discomfort of making it when you may not be able to wear it. I do agree that it would be lovely though. Also I did not realise you had sooo many sock projects on the go lol. I'm sure some of them could quite quickly turn into finishes though as your sock knitting is quite speedy. And the rhubarb and custard shawl looks almost finished. When you picked that up again previously you worked great guns on it so maybe that's a project you could also finish in not too much time as well. I like to look back over my WIPs at the end of each year to see whether my tastes have changed, and whether what is languishing is still relevant to me. I find that I rarely want to frog things as I still very much want all of my projects but sometimes it's just not the right time for them...
Yes! I did count them as they were still WIPs at the time I pulled them out of the bag, if that makes sense. so that's my starting point and now I'm clearing the decks by frogging and finishing. Feels like more progress to count them and then frog ahah. Oh good question. To be honest I'm not sure yet - I struggled a bit at Stitch Fest being around so much floof. I seem ok with suri alpaca it's just the mohair that seems to get me. This one is a sample for TYD although I'd love it when they're done with it so it isn't intended for me to wear. I don't think I could ever afford that much kidsilk in one go - it's held double and at £13 a ball it's quite steep. Maybe drops alpaca might be a good option for future? I've tried to avoid drops because of the reverse engineering indie patterns, and because of their practices with LYSs. James C Brett Shhhhhh is gorgeous and could be a good alternative. Haha honestly neither did I! It's bonkers even to me. Originally i shared my hubby's xmas eve socks as a WiP only to discover after recording that apparently I've already finished the second one. I shook my head in disbelief at that because I honestly have no recollection of even casting it on! I'm the same as you - sometimes something hits the frog pond but mostly I still want the project. I think I get emotionally attached to them too. xx
Can you please let me know the pattern for the V-neck sweater looks like it's garter stitch, I believe you said soho-something is the name?? Thank you. Enjoying your videos, hope to see many many more from you! Your new knitting friend from Maine USA 😊
Yes of course: it's the Soho Blouse pattern by Caidree - sorry I knew I'd miss something from the description. Here's a ravelry link for you if that's helpful: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/soho-blouse So glad you're enjoying them :)
I'm guessing 27. :) I have WIPs - what I"m actively working on - and Hibernating projects, which each time I finish one of those I pull out another to wake up and finish. In addition, I have long-term projects (generally blankets) that I just work on as the mood takes me. So right now 1 pair of socks plus a pair of mitts for a gift and 1 of my nine hibernating projects. Additionally I currently have three blankets going. Of course, Advent knitting starts in a couple of weeks so everything else will be put to the side for advent socks, a wrap, and a throw and then picked back up after the new year.
Are they grumpy when you wake them up or do they generally behave? To be honest I never usually count blankets as WiPs but in my lurgified state clearly forgot haha. Are these advent yarns you're knitting up or are you taking part in Knitvent? x
@TheMidnightDyery Yeah, they're generally grumpy, especially when it takes me a while to figure out where I left off on them. :D I'm doing both. Knitvent throw with one Advent set, a wrap from Ambah O'Brien's annual Festive KAL with another Advent set, and some vanilla Socks with an Advent sock set. Oh and I don't really count the blankets but they do show as WIPs on Rav.
I think you have 27 behind you. Plus 2 = 29. Do you also have pre-WIPs? I have projects in bags with their needles and pattern all ready to go that I haven't cast on yet. They're my WIPs in Waiting 😂 I craft in much the same way you do, I like having several WiPs so that I can just pick up what I'm in the mood for. Also, there's a lot to be said for the excitement of starting something new isn't there? Hope you manage to shake off that cold/virus thing soon. My partner has a lingering cold at the moment and it's just miserable for him. The worst is there's not much you can do about it either. I love that Soho blouse, I can see that in my future!! If it were mine, I'd frog and recast on the gorgeous Sibling Sweater, only really because you said something went a bit awry and that would niggle at me 😂
Ohhhh yes. I have about 10 WIPS in waiting and they're all rather substantial projects. No needles with them yet but organised in bags and I know what I'm doing with them. Not glamourous bags... tescos bags for life! hehe!
Ah I was so close! I guessed 31 at the start of the video! I am on a project finishing kick at the moment and I have actually ripped back 3 finished shawls as I have never worn them and wanted to reclaim the yarn!
You know me so well! It was 40 before frogging in the end although to be fair I found another 3 offscreen. I've a sinking feeling there might yet even be one or two more I've not found! Great idea to reclaim the yarn for new exciting things. I;'m curious - will you set the yarn or just use it? Naturally I'd just reknit it without any sort of prep work haha
I’m guessing you have between 25 and 35. For me, I just bought MORE yummy yarn from Stephen West’s shop in Amsterdam for 3 shawls. On my needles are an old advent calendar wrap (not sure it won’t get frogged); the Painted Bricks shawl (my first West shawl); two afghans; and at least one prayer shawl. Then I have the yarn and pattern for about 15 more shawls and cowls and socks. I have in a bin in my closet a bunch of Christmas stockings, and another four or five wraps, scarves and shawls. So I’ll say I also have at least 30 WIPs. I’m one who will go a fair amount of way then make a big error, then give up. I’m beginning to log these into my Ravelry so I can gain some distance from my annoyance with myself for making the mistake, and then more dispassionately decide on what needs to happens. For 2025, I’m going to continue to look at my WIPs and declutter as necessary. I’m giving myself grace to donate yarn and patterns that I’m pretty sure I won’t ever complete.
Oh how lovely!! I've got some Bicycle yarn in stash that Mina brought back for me as a surprise when she went to Amsterdam earlier this year. I was absolutely blown away that A she'd buy it for me and B how gorgeously soft it is. I have literally no idea what it will become but I know I must use it and not golum it again. I've only knit a few shawls but I am excited to knit more. How do you decide which one you want to try? The ravelry thing sounds like a sensible idea. I released myself from resolutions this year and think I've been more productive as a result but I am keen to carry less old wips through. The idea that some of mine would be starting school now if they were children is a little off-putting 🤣🤣
With my cross stitching I've always felt that I love the action and I love the journey of the pie e and if I never finish doesn't matter. Those WIPS can grow in numbers and I'm fine, strangely enough with my knitting I am more a product knitted and need to complete before I can move on. Possibly because the items are more utilitarian? I knit predominately socks and we need socks LOL. And hats, and cowls. We need those half the year so I get them done. This is so interesting that I've just realized this after 30 years of crafting! I enjoyed seeing your wips, thanks for sharing.
Oh what a fascinating observation! I'm similar in that with cross stitch I do find the process and action to be really soothing and enjoyable so happily let them coast along but I am liable to get bored with acres of stocking stitch and therefore cast on all the things isn't that funny? Sock knitting is the best! I usually knit vanilla socks (the only stocking stitch that doesn't bore me to tears, although the second sock takes 6 times as much knitting I'm sure!) but I've so many gorgeous books of patterned socks that I really need to try and do more of those. What sort of things do you like to cross stitch?
@TheMidnightDyery Don’t you just love the sound of stitching? Like those first stitches on taut fabric, LOL, it’s the sound of new beginnings. I love it. my cross stitching tastes have changed over the 30 years I’ve been stitching, I’ve been through my Suzy Zoo stage, Dimensions and Cross my Heart kit eras, moved through all the Little House Needlework ornaments and similar little things. In more recent years I’ve gone back and forth between super cute little patterns (I forget the term for it but things like mochi balls with faces and toast with faces) and a bit of a darker era. I am enjoying patterns from Lola Cross Stitch and The Witchy stitcher. For knitting, socks are the best, and fortunately I have many young people who love receiving hand knit socks so they always find a home.
Yes! The first draw of the thread is akin to new book smell. I've been stitching for a similar amount of time although I did let it drop in recent years, only completing one or two projects. Dimensions or gold collection were ones I usually had. A few years ago friends introduced me to Heaven and Earth Designs. I've started a Siamese cat one for a friend (although the count is ridiculous!) and I am saving for a Thomas Kinkade Christmas one. I've not heard of Lola Cross Stitch or Witchy Stitcher so I'll be sure to check them out x
It's a hobby, so do what makes you happy! I used to feel guilty not finishing something, but my late husband was an enabler. His attitude was that if it makes you happy, then you've got value from it, that's the point of it. His hobby was video games, and we gardened together. We were happy! ❤
I think frog the striped sibling sweater for Robin and do it in a larger size. Its barely started and would take you no time at all get the that same point again!
I think you should do what you want to do with your wips. However, you asked so if it were me I'd frog and CO in a bigger size if I actually think it will take a while to finish. Mostly just be honest with yourself and do whatever you feel is best for you. TFS 💙
I might be showing my age here but what does TFS stand for? I could google but years of being a secondary teacher has taught me it's often wiser to ask a human first 😂 Thank you so much for joining me and I do think the Sibling is going to the frog pond for now!
@TheMidnightDyery TFS is Thanks for sharing! Sorry bout that. I had to think a second if that was actually a 'real one' or had I accidentally put in a made up one my husband and I use to aggravate our mid 20's children lol but thankfully it wasn't family created. Have a wonderful upcoming holiday season. As I'm in the US, we have a few coming up. Love your channel, I'm new obviously 💙🤠
Ahh! That seems so obvious now - thank you! Very much looking forward to the holidays - hope you have a lovely one too and perhaps join me for vlogmas shennanigans! x
Great vlog you mentioned you joini in the round socks after 2 straight rows do you join the stitches in the 2nd row I joke you know what I mean thank you
Thanks so much! Okay so I use the long tail cast on, which means my first row I treat as the wrong side, because I like the smoother edge you get on one side of the long tail cast on. My second row then is the "right side" and when I finish that row, I just divide the stitches across my needles as you would normally, and carry on knitting straight round. I've actually got plans to work on the Holly Berry sock this week so if I can find a quiet moment, I'll be sure to record how I do it and add it into the vlog.
I never have any WIP because I always finish what I started before I move on to the next one. That is just how my brain works, I can not stand unfinished things. I envy people who can do it.
Haha you express it so well! I feel much the same as you and the cast on party itch definitely hits when I get into single figures. x
TH-cam algorithm showed me your video and I’m so glad they did! Definitely a new subscriber here! 💕💕💕
Good luck with your WiPs too! xx
@ thank you Gemma
I totally get you! Frogging is a really tricky thing for me because usually I'm genuinely wanting the product or enjoying the process. x
I love starting new projects and find trouble finishing them but am now trying to knit on what brings me joy rather than worrying about a number.
It's all about the joy here! xx
You inspired me to finish some of my small project WIPs. Looking forward to seeing some of the finished projects. 😊
You won't have long to wait! Good luck with yours x
I have just started to sort my life out after a cr** year, starting with my sewing room, could not believe I found you sorting your stuff out.
I'm sorry to hear you've had a pants year. Sorting out can be very cathartic and I'm more than happy to provide company x
@ thanks getting better
Thank you, you help me to feel better. Never understand people making unkind comments, not cool. I’m a new subscribers & look forward to more. So sorry about your little girl! ❤
Thank you, Penny, on all counts! I hope you're doing okay and thanks for joining me x
Thank you for sharing all of your beautiful projects.
So glad you've enjoyed it!
I guessed 27. You just popped up on TH-cam for me. Your energy is amazing! So glad I found you! New subscriber here.
I'm working on:
* Sharon's Glamping Blanket
* Second sock of a pair
* Frog and Toad w/clothes
* two harry potter woobles kits
* A Sophie Scarf
All of the above are meant to be Christmas gifts (wish me luck!).
29 wips! That’s incredible! I’m so excited to see what you have cooking up next n your project bags. It’s like Christmas or “grab bag” viewing. 🤣
haha I love your enthusiasm and so glad you're enjoying it., I do now have some empty bags after frogging some and the temptation to cast on new adventures is HIGH
Just found this podcast… really enjoyed it …thank you. Hope you’re feeling better.
What are the chances?! Hope you had fun sorting yours out and are suitably inspired x
I just found your channel on you tube, so glad I did. I guess 35 WIPS in your pile 🤞☺. Now to continue watching to see if I was right!
You were awfully close - good guess! Hope you enjoyed your time with me and will come back soon :)
Gurl! You’re making me feel better about my pile. 😂
Great episode.
I’m planning out next year, and I only working on my wips.
Good luck! Happy to make you feel better and so glad you enjoyed it! x
42?
Love a wip parade 😘
Get well soon!
I want to knit all the things and when I find a crafter with lots of projects, I feel good and cast on! 😉
Cast on ALL the things! I'm always happy to encourage and lead astray ;)
42 was very close to the mark great guess!
I'm so happy to have brought some cheer and made you feel good! Hope you'll visit again xx
Yes, it’s double crochet in the US!! ☺️ your work is beautiful. I love the colors you use!!
thank you so much!
I predict 25. I can't wait to see your projects!!!
hope you enjoyed! x
Enjoy! x
I love Jon @EasyKnits yarn for socks … great colours.
wow thats an impressive amount of whips, you must have a lot of cable needles to keep them on lol thank you for sharing x everyone crafts in their own way, sad to hear you have had some negitivity in comments, hope you feel better soon x
@ thank you.
WIP guess 40
I wouldnt frog the ghost, you can always sew the arms on once your finished OR grab the other end of the yarn to make the arms to crochet them in (have done both options when crocheting myself)
true! xx
First time viewer, loved all your WIPs! Love your enthousiasm and really like all the socks. I just casted on a bulky weight basic raglan sweater and while I'm not a bulky weight girl, I couldn't resist the hot pink color of this yarn. Will be back soon, see you next time!
Welcome and hurrah for a return visit. I'm so glad you enjoyed your time here. Sometimes the yarn just needs to be a thing xx
Frog and remake the Sibling Sweater. No comment on the other UFOs. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Thank YOU for taking the time to watch! x
As you know, im somewhat of a WIP fan myself but i doubt ill ever reach your level 😂 Seeing all of your lovely projects has me itching to cast new things on! Maybe in 2025 I'll live dangerously and become a serial caster onner.
Do it! Join me!!! And hey never say never ;)
I have too many WIPs to keep track of.
Hope you feel better very soon. No judgement here about the number of WIPs - just lots of admiration for your work.
Ah thank you! That's very kind.
Omgosh!! Don't start a new project until you finish the first project is my motto! That way I feel accomplished and people aren't waiting years for their gifts!! 😂
I feel perfectly accomplished and no one is waiting years here. 😊
@TheMidnightDyery I was talking about me cos I'm so slow 🤣🥰
Recast on the Sibling Sweater. You’ve got so many to do. It seems you would have a more relaxed knit if you frog and go up a size.
You're absolutely right of course and I do LOVE the process of this one (she says, having knit approximately 12 rows). x
😮 Im here for it! Here I am feeling bad about 3 wips! Thanks for sharing!❤
Hope I've alleviated some of that feeling for you! xx
@ I love that you cast on what you feel! Its in the moment!
New to your video love it.. I have been knitting vintage cotton dishcloths . and square for a blanket for my beds.. just knitting shawl for myself
Ah thank you so much! I'm so glad you've enjoyed your first visit. Got to love a dishcloth. I'm a recent convert and everyone's getting some for Christmas. What makes them vintage is it a pattern? x
@TheMidnightDyery . No vintage cotton yarn for dishcloths..or king cole cottonsoft yarn
Ahhh I see sorry!
God that intro was brilliant!
🤣🤣🤣 why thank you!
I have a similar problem, lol. Haven't bought much yarn this year.
hey who said anything about a problem 🤣😉❤
I dont know how to knit. But i recently bought some knitting needles.
Now i just need to start learning 😂😂😂
Happy birthday for next month! That's a lovely big family to keep you busy. How kind of you to make for charity. xx
My goal this year was to get my wips into a single digit number. Not sure I’ll make it- 😂- I’m not counting the mountain of projects until January 1!!!
If ever I get into single digits I immediately cast on several things to fix it 😂
Ive got a few more wips than I would like to admit.
Welcome! So glad you enjoyed it!! Tsk tsk how dare that jumper be too small. I hope it thinks about what it's done while in time out. xx
@ I know, the absolute cheek of it 😂
Hi Gemma, really looking forward to this bare all wip vlog. I'm going for 42🤔 My hubby has just piped up with 57. Xx
Hello Angela! How are you? Haha that's an excellent guess and I think your hubby has the measure of me too - thanks for being here with me again xx
Being ill is rubbish, zero stars, would not recommend 🤣
Hope your knee is healing nicely and you get your knits done.
I also have four crochet blankets on the go so 11
The number of project bags is almost more impressive than the number of WIPs 🤣
haha you're not wrong! I used to make and sell project bags so three of them are from my collection, and others were gifts from friends and hubby for birthdays and xmases. I still don't have enough bags for all the wips that would be seriously impressive I think hehe so bags for life for the win! x
Hi Gemma,
Vicks Vapor rub in the bottom of your feet with socks and you will stop coughing.
Off to record the next episode shortly. x
36 🐸
You feel better this less wips to put into next size up
I'm now going back through my list and checking the numbers!
WYS used to be my favourite for commercial sock yarn but I've gone over to Yarnsmiths 100% merino sock yarn.. Lovely and soft.
I've heard a LOT of good things about Yarnsmiths but have yet to sample the delights. If you consider my sock wips as a percentage representation of my sock yarn you can probably guess why 🤣
2min 55 sec my guess is 21
1hr 6mins 😂😂😂😂😂 okay so I under estimated just a little!
I love your anniversary shawl idea, I think it sounds like a way of marking your daughters memory each day and then it can wrap you up in all of the love you share with her ❤
I hope the pj's and bed helped with the chesty cold 😊
Thank you as always for the video xx
You do indeed! I've linked your shop in the description xx. 23 that's a pretty educated guess let's see if you're right haha x
I think I get emotionally attached to them too. xx
I think make something for yourself with the three years! I love seeing colourwork with self striping. It looks so interesting!
I think it might have to be a Christmas Eve cast on perhaps? Or a new year treat!
Here's a ravelry link for you if that's helpful: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/soho-blouse
So glad you're enjoying them :)
Sounds like a busy, beautiful and colourful advent for you! xx
I think you have 27 behind you. Plus 2 = 29.
Do you also have pre-WIPs? I have projects in bags with their needles and pattern all ready to go that I haven't cast on yet. They're my WIPs in Waiting 😂
I craft in much the same way you do, I like having several WiPs so that I can just pick up what I'm in the mood for.
No judgement here! I am a WIP lover myself lol. Planning a video in the New Year with all of mine ….. Jillxx
Oh that sounds fun! Do you know what you've got or, like me, will it be a surprise?
@ it will be a surprise (or a shock lol)!
🤣 I'll be sure to come watch! 🍿
I love the Golom voice! 😂
I totally forgot I did that. Now thousands of people have seen it oops! haha x
Your husband sounds like he was a very wise man. ❤
I think frog the striped sibling sweater for Robin and do it in a larger size. Its barely started and would take you no time at all get the that same point again!
You're right of course. I think it does need to just be released for now xx
I love Jude.
24 🐸 you have enought to finished b4 xmas
Lovely wipparade ❤ I have 10 wips, trying to finish them before 2025 🤭
Good luck with your quest!
32 from the looks. I have many UFOs and about 3 active wips
I could google but years of being a secondary teacher has taught me it's often wiser to ask a human first 😂
Thank you so much for joining me and I do think the Sibling is going to the frog pond for now!
Very much looking forward to the holidays - hope you have a lovely one too and perhaps join me for vlogmas shennanigans! x
I would frog it and do 9-10 years the way you are going 😂 I couldn't cope with more than 1 thing on the go.
Ouch! That one's sharp but totally fair 😂🤣🤣
@TheMidnightDyery thank you so much
This is awesome. I think 34
Have fun!
I never have any WIP because I always finish what I started before I move on to the next one. That is just how my brain works, I can not stand unfinished things. I envy people who can do it.
Everyone works differently - that's the beauty of this craft - there's something for everyone. Thank you for spending some time here! x
@@TheMidnightDyery Yes, that is so true. My Daughter has a lot of WIPs and that is perfectly fine :)
SO relatable.
Hej Gemma ☺ New subscriber. Greetings from Denmark, Susan 🇩🇰
Well hello and welcome! So lovely to have you here x
I’m monogamous knitting right now. No😅WIPS. Gift knitting socks. I have had up to 4 or 5 projects going before.
Gift season does tend to focus me! I love knitting socks for others too x
I do have so UFOs which will be frogged and the yarn used for something else. Those are about 10 years old.
got to love a bit of recycling!
Maybe 30 wips? I have maybe 7 or 8. Of those, 2 or 3 probably need frogging.
