Black crush in lagom black test pattern doesn't exist anymore (at least in firmware MCM103, with either 2.0 or 2.2 gamma, SDR and 56 brightness as here). You can see all squares instead of only the eight as in this video at 7:00, without needing to use crutches like the fps mode which skews colors like in this video. Shadow Boost setting Dynamic Adjustment (i have it off) can also be used in combination with even lower brightness like 35 to keep seeing the lowest black shades.
Good to know - thanks for sharing that. Just to add that by eye even with the original firmware it was only really the first 4 squares that were more masked than they should be (5th slightly fainter) - the visibility is worse in the video just because of how the camera captured things.
When HDR is on sure, it''s nice. But without HDR it still crushes the exact same way here on MCM103. Setting the monitor to 60hz does fix it, but that's not something I want to do
@@Dwarrelpoot If you use icc profile (like RTINGS calibrated from their review) for the monitor, it also needs to be set for Firefox or whatever you are viewing the image with. Then you can compare it with windows photo viewer which doesn't support color profiles. The difference is drastic. I can see 3rd square in firefox with the monitor's profile but in photo viewer i can see only 11th square from Lagom's black level image. When this is done it doesn't matter anymore whether you use wide gamut or hdr, they will stay visible. I also have the monitor set at 240Hz.
@ I mean I calibrated with displaycal myself and sure, that helps. But that won’t matter when plugging in a switch or something that doesn’t do HDR and even windows doesn’t use the profiles everywhere.
@@Dwarrelpoot Yes, profiles are a hassle (very few games can be easily color managed). But hdr is not needed for the blacks to remain visible. The review sample already includes 'updated' firmware which I was given as a pre-release, so I assume the official release will just be the same as that.
great review, got it a few days back now, its great, only small drawbacks are VRR flickering but limited only in few loading screens (afaik thats a thing with all oleds atm), grayscale is worst than an ips for example on gradient backgrounds like many dark themed - sites again i think its common in all oleds. other than that some games needs getting used to, they seem darker but not really because now you can see all the shadows and black is black not backlit gray. the only thing that confuse me is the pixel cleaning settings . I usually turn of my monitor when not gaming and make my ips as main monitor, does the pixel cleaning run automatically? why couldnt they add a flashing LED or smth... also does it run EVERY time i turn it off? it seems that it does cause it takes a few minutes for the monitor to disappear on windows multiple monitor settings. in that case isnt that bad running pixel cleaning everytime you turn it off? what if you only use it for 1 hour, that shouldn't happen and so many screen refreshes wont they degrade panel faster? what about when you have a long session, should you manually refresh it in about 4 hours? or its it ok to skip it and just turn it off when ur done?
The pixel cleaning cycle runs automatically if you switch the screen off, yes. But it shouldn't run every time, only if you've used your monitor for a sufficient length of time (several hours cumulatively). Agree some LED indication it was running the cycle would be useful. On the PG32UCDP (and possibly other new models) it has a section of the OSD which says how many times the cycle has been run and time since it was last run. Would've been nice to see on this one as well.
@@eltiofrank69mph They're compression artifacts. Common on heavily compressed streamed content. How makes or unmasked they appear depends on the gamma of the monitor.

Per the review, it isn't used and you don't need to use it.
