- China uses its trade power as leverage to infiltrate institutions and bully virtually every Western nation. Anastasia Lin knows this firsthand, having grown up in Communist China and faced down the regime as an international human-rights activist. Even after Chinese rights advocates immigrate to the West, the Communist Party uses their family members in China as leverage to silence and intimidate them. The free world should unite to counter Beijing’s abuse.
Anastasia Lin, an actress and Miss World Canada 2015, is the Centre for Independent Studies scholar-in-residence in 2019. She is the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s ambassador for China policy and a senior fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights.
In 2015, Lin was denied a Chinese visa to attend the 65th annual Miss World contest on the southern Chinese island of Hainan, because of her outspoken advocacy for human rights and religious freedom in China.

I've been so wrong about the chinese people who place their values after money regardless but not NOW after your speech, seeing in person. You must be bravest person in the world who dares to speak out the truth. Only people who grows up there and go to school from younger age can understand what socialism in pratice in China and VN. She is so brave! I am a Hongkonger, and have many friends born in China and moved to Hong Kong when they was a kid. They told me the same thing ... but many of my friends and I are not as brave as she. We need to consider our future career and my families.

I am from Taiwan, I once was a sourcing manager for American company in China. I was introduced to a woman labour camp, which had CNC machine tools and all kinds of equipment to produce for export. It looks 100% like a factory except there are a lot of barricading doors. I didn't know it is a labour camp until I had to go to the restroom. It got a iron door , too.
So all the chinese are actually living in labor camp huh, but how about the building & factory & other people in the market, hmmm... Probably they just actor & actress being paid to act right??
China did not force Sri Lanka to borrow from it. According to Mr. Kodituwakku, the Sri Lankan ambassador to China, his country is not a 'victim' here. In fact Sri Lanka is planning to borrow another 1 billion dollars to built highway for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The total foreign debt of it is 64 billion dollars but only 8 billion dollars comes from China. Miss Lin falsely accused China for lending Sri Lanka huge amount of money so it can not pay. Most of Sri Lanka debt comes from other sources not from China.

A.L. was in China until she was 13, I don't remember much of being 13, BUT, she's not wrong. I married a Chinese national who came to Australia aged 28, I have lived in China and married in China, and everything she says about the Chinese and the way they are taught to think is spot on. It is also becoming more overt. My wife is from a small village, Han rice growers, and there are now speakers through the valleys, around the villages, several times a day directing people to be good to one another so their nation will remain great. The mind set is totally right though and since vivid has been the source of a few heated discussions. Saying "China" in any conversation in ear shot is enough for the assumption to be that we are saying China is terrible. I like the Chinese, I have Chinese family, I have a Chinese wife and son with her who hold papers that make him both Australian and Chinese, even so, even if I'm defending something I know to be untrue, I could be on the brink of a heated discussion about how the west always attack China. It's more than a little annoying, the CCP put more pressure on my relationship than is required with their shitty propoganda war.
I hate watching discussions where other countries discuss American politics, views, and beliefs without a normal American on the panel. American academics mean very little in America to Americans they're bought paid for and have a hand up thier ass by the highest bidder. The biggest issue in American politics in regards to China is that when Americans vote for the president who sets the precedent for 4-8 years at a time you have to understand that we don't vote according to how China will impact that next 4 years. In fact I wouldn't be surprised no body whose a regular citizen thought about China. The second thing you need to understand is as Americans we don't mind the aid we give we don't mind the safety we provide and we will gladly die defending freedoms that don't involve us. We may not think it's a good idea but we are the world super power military our men and women are modern day warriors. War is what they do. that point will be relevant in a second bear with me,
1. Americans choose the presi pres and that sets the precedent on what our relationship with China will be.
2. All the big tech companies and manufacturing plants are owned by Democrats, Democrats are vehemently opposed to foreign tension.
3. Republicans are economic and tough love people. We want limited govt, lower taxes, and we don't like being told what to do, what to think, what to say, or be forced to pay stupid bills.
As a result half the country votes for a party that wants to work with China for the betterment of both countries. The other side votes for a party that feels like China has been raping us for far too long and we don't care if we have to go to war to put China in thier place well all suit up grab a gun from our closets and fight for our country. It's a major conflict between the two parties... So it's really hard to categorize into one sweeping statement how America feels about China or deals with them because no one votes with China in mind and voters dictate the presi pres who then upholds traditional views and values in regards to China.
It's so annoying to see foreign scholars discussing America and Americans views or culture in regards to politics by speaking about it according to who is in the white house or who the dominant party is in their opinion. No one ever makes a point to bring up how we get to those places where we have a hard left democrat stroking the nuts of china, or how we arrived at a hard line anti China administration it's as if no one recognizes the role the voters play in that.

When you have already been born in a society that cherishes freedom, we often take for granted the true purpose in life, which is to preserve that freedom. That is why we confuse the concept of prosperity as wealth and economic stability. Only when that freedom is gradually taken away do we fully realized and question what has happened to the society we once knew. When every human being in a once free thinking social environment, finds themselves struggling for their offspring and their offspring. Economic stabilty and true prosperity should be an obtainable quest for every man, woman and child who are willing to work hard and educate themselves, as well as the children that they bring into this world.
Human prosperity that benefits everyone should be the goal of all governing institutions. It is so easy to get caught up in a world of wealth and feeling privileged over others.That will eventually be the demise of every great society, who puts too much focus on materialism and wealth.
I think one thing why Australia is worried about is the fact that China has so many armed forces that Australia would have no chance of defending itself, not that we wouldn't try. I do know I remember when we were not as dependent on China for trade.

Anastasia, you don't reserve my respect by trying to run down China just to get acceptance by your adopted country. I am also an oversea Chinese. I feel proud that China has caught up with the West in so many aspects, that we can now say to the West that enough is enough, no more bullying like what they used to do in the past.
My forefather had to migrate to SE Asia more than a hundred years ago, because of the havoc caused by the Western powers in China.
