We must defend freedom of speech | Lionel Shriver | Brendan O'Neill |

  • Lionel Shriver and Brendan O'Neill sit down with CIS fellow Monica Wilkie for The Woke Inquisition, an online discussion on the recent race crisis, protests in the UK, the BLM movement and cancel culture.
    Everything from The Golden Girls to brown rice is now ‘problematic’ as activists seek to erase anything ‘offensive.’ Is this akin to past censorious movements when books were burnt, and statues toppled or is this something different?
    We now see shows like The Simpsons announcing they will not allow white voice actors to voice non-white characters. Is the end of fiction rapidly approaching? With statues, beloved children’s authors, and beer in the firing line will there be anything left after this latest round of cancellations?
    Brendan O’Neill is the editor of Spiked Online and a former CIS scholar in residence. He is author of A Duty to Offend (2015) and Anti-Woke (2018).
    Lionel Shriver is author of numerous international bestseller novels and a columnist with The Spectator in London. Lionel was recently in Australia for CIS as our 2019 Annual Lecture & Dinner.

So, yes, after listening to these two with my spouse, we think them fine fellows, but, all in all, jolly well clueless.

      @@OpethTheater3 Dear Brian, thank you so very very much for your kind words! It is an extra light on my path today, in addition to what Chryst and my wife have put there. No, I most certainly cannot take credit for the fact that my wife, a Rural White Southern woman who is true in the deepest sense of the word and who always strives to understand what is going on with others in this world, came into my life, but, what I can take credit for is that, before she came into my life, i had refused all women who had wanted to be my lover, and so, when she came into my life, I was not messed up in the head, nor awash in filth. And my wife and I spent nearly every day of every week together, as friends, never kissing each other once, for 2 years, and so we were able to build a house that The Good Lord could bless before we committed to each other. If anything of that could be of service to you, I offer you that. As to your response to me remark, on the political side, I am heartened to see that you understand, because, sad to say, many seem not to. i do not think that this is an intellectual issue, per se, but, one of a lack of deep reflection. What I see going on with Liberals, all around this country, is that they are upset that they feel The Far Left is giving them a bad name, instead of making a deeper examination and taking stock of what they have given rise to. This reminds me of the aging drinker who, instead of getting off the booze, tries to figure out a different way of drinking, so that his body will somehow tolerate the constant poisoning better! • @barbarahelis
      @barbarahelis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Timothy Somerville No, it was not. The Renaissance period laid down the foundations of modern science. There was an explosion of interest in physics, chemistry, astronomy and other sciences. Leonardo da Vinci, Tycho Brahe, Keppler, Copernicus, Galileo, they all were Renaissance men. The printing press was invented. Art became much more sophisticated and life-like, focusing on the human body (often nude) - compare to earlier art, say, the Gothic period, where you can see how basic and cartoonish the human form was. It was precisely the exploration of secular rather than religious matters which allowed this spectacular growth in so many disciplines.

    I jest. Thank goodness for these people who speak out. Thank you for another great discussion.
    One of the most important points discussed is the re-writing of history and "pretending" certain things didn't happen or not talking about important tragedies, it has ramifications that go beyond grand scale historical events and responsibilities. Another is the invalidation of another person's or group's experiences, ideas, and value and the refusal to listen in order to learn when there are differences. People are doing the exact thing they claim to hate and be fighting against, which seems only to be valid and necessary anymore when it applies to THEM.

People backlash on immigration when times get hard, and Trump came in speaking what working class Americans wanted to hear. Now the democrats had too many extreme immigrants (Ilmar Omahar) who are simply anti-america. Your average working class american cannot stand her rhetoric, and would vote anti-democrat on her alone. The democrats will not put a decent candidate forward until the end of the term. i am not sure where you are from, however the UK will not see a labour government for decades, for very similar reasons as US. Cultural appropriation is, for lack of a better expression, utter bollocks. And for quite a simple reason. Because it is predicated on the belief that cultures are rigid and do not change, evolve or merge. It presumes there is no cultural flexibility and any attempt to share or trade a cultural feature is some sort of violation. But that's not true. Cultures are like human tool kits, we mix and match what we like and what works for us. That's why tea leaves and curry are considered part of contemporary British culture.
    Things that make up a culture, like food, music, art, language, fashion and many more, are all subject to influence and change. Our culture now is not even the same as it was 20 years ago. It also tends to be very Eurocentric as it views things like wearing jeans and a t-shirt or eating with a knife and fork as the status quo. Whilst wearing a kimono and eating with chopsticks would be considered appropriation. This will inevitably lead to cultural segregation, or cultural isolationism.
