      I also thought it was a disgrace and the ultimate expression of cheapness by the Brits for him to pay for his flight when he was a political prisoner. I hear he was not convicted of a crime, but in solitary confinement for 5 yrs, and restricted to the Ecuadorian Embassy for 7 yrs, and house arrest before that. He has a hip problem since he doesn't walk quite right; protruding belly-probably metabolic syndrome. I can imagine his health problems and psychological damage. years he can never get back. These effects will most likely shorten his lifespan, but I hope he can maximize healing and restore much of his health. It's a huge positive he has a wife and two sons to devote himself to. I hope the press leaves him and his family alone when they see him at the beach or in public.

      It's emphatically not about freedom of speech. The lawyers have made it quite clear that the first amendment to the USAmerican constitution does not apply to him because the alleged crimes did not happen on USAmerican soil (whatever that means) and he is not American. Which means an extradition from the UK would violate his European human rights of not being discriminated against based on nationality.
      It is about the truth. Telling the truth is covered by "freedom of opinion" or "freedom of expression", depending on where you live. It is about journalism.

      That was one of the parts of this saga that stank the strongest: the way that so many media outfits deemed Assange's plight to be a non-story. By rights, you'd expect everyone working in journalism to have made a _cause celebre_ out of him. It reeked of a "D-Notice" and raised serious questions about the USA's control over what gets reported in our supposedly "free" media.
      Hopefully, in time, we'll find out the truth about what happened there. I'm not into conspiracy theories, but I find it to be beyond unlikely that so many news organisations and editors all independently decided not to keep the Assange story in the public eye. Odds are, it wasn't due to free will on their part.

    Thanks, Yanis, for clarifying that, while it is incredibly good news that Julian Assange is now _almost_ free, this was not without a terrible price. The fact that the condition for his release was to accept criminality by 'admitting' publicly that he broke a US law and served 5 years in a high security prison for (not to mention 7 in the Ecuadorean embassy and 2 years before that under something like house arrest), means that every journalist anywhere in the world is now liable for such a nightmarish unjust legal procedure and life long criminalisation if they publish anything the US disapproves of. History will ensure lasting shame on the US regime and its minions in governments and media organisations all over the world because of this sordid mockery of legal procedure.

    • @davidwuhrer6704
      @davidwuhrer6704 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@janb3641 Because the USA never recognised the international criminal court. And per agreement, the ICC is only responsible for countries that recognise it.
      Accusations have been made, but there is no way to enforce prosecution.
      In addition, the USA have passed a law that, if any USAmerican citizen were to be taken to court in Den Haag, the USA would have to declare war on Denmark. Obviously violating international law that way, but with no way to prosecute.
      The only other option would be for the UN to sanction the USA. This would require the UN Security Council to pass a resolution. However, the USA have a permanent seat on the UNSC that allows them to veto any proposed resolution, so nobody even tries.

He represents our struggles to maintain our freedoms, and we thank him for his struggle to reveal wrong doings by certain entities that believe they are above the law, and can cast the constitution aside, and satisfy their own plans at the cost of freedom of speech. Julian is free, and has allowed us to enjoy a glimpse of that freedom to which we have a right to. The Americans and their NATO (plus wanna-be NATO)members have shown that freedom of speech is just a phrase. not anything that any government is really seeking to reach.
    Shame on US, there is no reason why Julian should have been prosecuted in the first place.
    Even more shame on UK to imprison him for no legal reason.
    Shame on Sweden because they made that (unlawfully) possible.
