      When I was a kid, my brother and I rented out the live-action version of Pinocchio (The first one), and in that movie there actually IS a scene where his lying causes consequences. It actually also happens to be the scene where Pinocchio finds out that when he lies his nose grows, and I truly love it, because it freaks him out.
      So this scene actually takes place when he goes to school. When they're having class, a boy kicks Pinocchio in the leg to bully him, and Pinocchio, thinking it's a game, kicks him back. Except that it really hurts the boy, since Pinocchio is made out of wood. The teacher then comes over and asks Pinocchio what is going on. The other boy tells the teacher Pinocchio kicked him, after which Pinocchio panics and says it wasn't him. His nose then grows, to everyone (including Pinocchio's) shock. Noticing his nose grow makes Pinocchio get anxious and come up with excuses, and more lies about a man climbing in through window and kicking the boy, or that the boy kicked himself, etc. Each time his nose gets longer, Pinocchio gets more and more anxious, because he realizes everyone sees through his lies, and the teacher keeps getting angrier and angrier. His nose gets so long, though, that it touches the rag used to wipe chalk off the schoolboard (that the teacher was holding), which causes Pinocchio to sneeze, causing chalk to get all over the teacher's face. It then cuts to him getting kicked out of school, and him feeling genuine remorse over the humiliation he faced, and covering the teacher in chalk.

    In Italy Pinocchio is a beloved tale, originally written by Carlo Collodi, set in Tuscany, and many Italian movies have been directed about it. But to me it is a real pity that in both Disney movies, the old one and the recent one (and also the recent Italian one) the last part of the story is cut off, while being the best part because it gives fullfillment. After returning home from their adventure with Monstro (from which they escape thanks to a talking tuna fish) Geppetto comes down with a fever and Pinocchio takes care of him. During the day he works in a farm in place of the farmer's donkey, that is sick and near to his death. Pinocchio recognizes him immediately, he's Lampwick (Lucignolo in Italian), and this brings to the heartbreaking scene of Lampwick's death (actually my favourite scene of the whole story because it is packed with emotions). Pinocchio is paid a little money and a warm glass of milk that he gives to his ill father, Geppetto, helping him heal. Moreover at night he studies for school. This is the moment in which he is rewarder by the Fata Turchina (Fairy Godmother) and is turned into a real boy. Not because of a single heroic selfless gesture, but with everyday hardwork, learning his lessons about life and honesty little by little, actually showing care towards his loved ones. That's why in my opinion the best pinocchio movie the Roberto Benigni one, the 2002 one. Or if you are curious you could also check out the older Italian Pinocchio movies that are visually quite scary but wonderful, like the Luigi Comencini six episode series "The adventures of Pinocchio" (1972) which is a classic.

    I believe the reason that everyone is suddenly making Pinocchio movies is that Disney lost the exclusive rights to the visual depiction of the character and it's gone to the public domain, since the original was so long ago and they didn't make a new one in time. The story itself was always public domain, but the visual representation was owned by Disney (I could rant for hours about the way Disney has fucked over public domain but plenty of TH-camrs have done it for me and better). Disney made the remake both because the usual "let's remake our movies but WORSE because MONEY" and also because they still want people to associate Pinocchio with Disney.
    Edit: To clarify, I'm not 100% sure on this explanation. It's one that I've seen passed around and I couldn't find anything concrete with my limited googling to say if it's true or not.

    • @floricel_112

    • @mockturtlesuppe
      @mockturtlesuppe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      But that wouldn't explain why the others are making their Pinocchio remakes, since as far as I can tell those don't really take any visual cues from the Disney version.
      I think you're confusing a few different things. Disney didn't own the rights to the visual depiction of the character in general - they would the rights to _their own_ 1939 version of the character. And I can't find any source to back up the statement that that copyright expired. From some (admittedly dodgy) sources I can find online, their copyright would run out on their version of Pinnochio some time after 2036.
      I think what you're thinking of is the recent Winnie the Pooh horror flick, which was able to be made _precisely because_ the original work by A.A. Milne went into public domain, so Disney lost its exclusive rights to it. However, again, Disney still has the rights to its own original depiction of the character, which is why the character in the horror film couldn't have a solid red shirt.

      @MugWitch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@mockturtlesuppe Hmmm... This isn't anything proven based on fact but just guesswork, however I feel like part of why there are Pinocchio remakes this year specifically is simply because of Del Toro's. It's been a known project of his since 2008 but it got shelved and then seemed done for good by 2017 until 2018 when Netflix had acquired the production.
      Part of the business game is that you're not above trying to rush out something just for the sake of stealing the limelight from someone else. Disney had already announced back in 2015 that they were planning to do a remake for Pinocchio, but it didn't have a confirmed slot on their upcoming slate. With the announcement of Del Toro's project being back on in 2018, I'm guessing they bumped up whatever development for a Pinocchio remake they had as a priority in order to try and cut off attention given to Del Toro's version. Probably had to complete some projects that were in the works already to do so fully though.
      The Russian version with Pauly Shore was just a bonus made to mooch off of the Pinocchio hype they knew would be happening because of the announcements of these productions. It reminds me of some of the releases that are made in Europe and Russia as a response to the trend of whatever Disney's releasing.

    The main problem with all these remakes is this: the beats are all there, but the rhythm is all off.
    When you compare scenes like Nala reuniting with Simba, the Donkey scene, Mulan's Decision, Belle in the West Wing, or even the Curse from Sleeping Beauty, you can tell the writers are TRYING to get that same UMPH but because the pacing is all off it just comes off as rushed and poorly executed. Pacing is everything in a film. The reason why the donkey scene and stampede are 10x better in the originals, is because of the buildup to the payoff. But the remakes just kind of fast forward to the payoff and thus the emotions are not there because they expect us to have already seen the original.

      I mean, who goes up to a kid and actively teach them smoking and drinking is bad? That’s not a real concern that parents have with children in today’s time. Smoking and drinking were much more prevalent in the 40s. It’s almost unheard of to see misbehaving children do those kinds of things. But eating excessive candy? That is a very genuine problem that we teach kids about today. So I don’t know, I see it as more of a reflection of changing times.

    • @sparrowskeleton1831
      @sparrowskeleton1831 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@minisn3066 I mean, saying “no” to these things are still taught to children. Cigarette and alcohol consumption has declined over the years among the general population (which is wonderful) but, peer pressure still happens. Drug abuse still happens. It’s important for children to learn that partaking in these activities and running wild is wrong and has consequences. Never going home because you went overboard is a pretty good way to get the message across.
      I agree that overconsumption of unhealthy, sugary food is a concern for children as obesity rates are increasing in many countries but, idk. I think the 2022 Pleasure Island still plays it too safe and that the punishment doesn’t fit the “crime” in this version.

    New Disney movie remakes are completely missing the point of the actual movies. Like pinocchio was a lesson to kids that if u'll be naughty there will be consequences and if u r nice u'll be rewarded but in this one he was just a dumb kid who was. Misled and mistreated by villains so no real lesson only nightmares from the animation 😞

      Why put such shit in kids' cartoons?
      Years later neighbour kids of mine watched that same cartoon and switched it off because they found it too sad and scary to watch.
      Yeah yeah, real life is sad and scary sometimes too, valueable life lessons etc. Right, how about "No!" to that?

    Also, I think the Blue Fairy would've looked better if she'd NOT had an extremely "modern" hairdo and had, instead, worn it in the same style as the original animation. (I mean, WIGS are still a thing.)
    ANND, the fox didn't need those VERY human hands. More paw-like (like his feet) would've been better. But yeah, agree - it's what Paramount did when the first made Sonic, as opposed to what they eventually greenlit thanks to that guy whose name currently escapes me...

      Sighs, the blue fair's hair ended up being sprinkles and glitter. It was beautiful really...but the trailer scene was a bad shot because it made her hair look bald, but she wasn't. Considering you only saw her once in the movie ...your complaint is petty.
      How did you get so focus on the fox's hands? Even in the original, the guy wore gloves with human hands....you are simply tripping at this point. You are working hard to find a problem with the movie.

The total number of animated films from that studio will be 62 as of Wish, in Thanksgiving 2023, with three of those being sequels so only 59 available with a number of those already done. HOWEVER, the part you seem to be overlooking is they can make sequels to any of these, and have announced sequels for several.
      I say "any" but theyr'e not likely to continue Beauty and the Best, desite how much money it made. They were going to make a TV show based off it, but that has been canceleld. Still, Aladdin 2, Cruella 2, and Jungle Book 2 have all been announced.

    The pleasure island thing. Based on how you describe it and the clicks makes me think Disney didn't add it back in the same way because it has a child molestation kind of undertone too it. This makes me far more uncomfortable than before...but I can't be the only one catching on to that right....I mean the scene when him saying "they don't come back as boys" alone made me extremely uncomfortable...it being called pleasure island...

    • @ayekantspeylgud
      @ayekantspeylgud 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I get where you’re coming from but I think you’re imposing 2022 thinking onto a 1940s movie. Even the word “pleasure” carries a different meaning today than it did then. TECHNICALLY speaking it’s the same but these days it has a sexual tone that’s societally driven. We are in a much more sexualized culture in the west today than we were then. Sex was much more private. “Pleasure Island” refers to the boys taking pleasure in smoking, drinking, and just acting out selfishly in ways that aren’t allowed and aren’t good for them - thus acting like asses - thus turning into donkeys - thus why they don’t come back “as boys”. If they were trying to imply that they were diddling every boy there, the donkey reference would’ve made no sense.

    Disney was really afraid of making pinocchio flawed.. besides being somewhat naive. He initially ignores honest john and goes to school, and only goes with him because he's got nowhere to go after the teacher kicks him out for some weird racist vendetta against puppets.
    Then he just gets kidnapped to pleasure island where he just... follows the rules of the theme park and gets punished for it.
    Hes just a victim of circumstance, being dragged through the plot by his nose making no decisions of his own.
