Enchanted worked because it was about bringing magic to the real world. So Robert being cynical and the riffs on fairy tales was funny or wholesome. I think my favorite representation of this was during That's How You Know when the construction workers danced and posed to Giselle's singing or when the bikers crashed into Edward when he tried to sing.
Disenchanted tried to swap it, bringing the real world into a fairy tale. Problem was, by transforming everyone into character tropes, it just resulted in a... generic fairy tale movie. None of the characters were who we liked in the original movie. There was way too much singing which would usually be fine with me but the songs were so cookie cutter and bland.

The movie should have just revolved around Morgan and Giselle's relationship, Morgan learning about magic and how she can use it to save the day. I really enjoyed the movie, but the main thing I was disappointed by is that there was no mention of Giselle’s business. She started a business called Andalasia Fashions, selling clothes made by herself and animals, and it would have been cool to see her succeeding as an entrepreneur in NYC.
Instead, she’s basically a housewife? I was a little disappointed with that.
The best character in disenchanted imo was Nancy, who works so well as a no nonsense kind queen of andalasia (also Idina’s song is gorgeous).
I do also agree that Robert and Edward were heavily underused. Wish we could have seen more of Robert and Giselle’s relationship

I don't see problem with Giselle as housewife (she has small child, of course she would like break from her work to be with her child) but they should have mention her giving herself a break from her work. It was nice ending (of first movie) for her to bring a bit of magic into clothes. She could also do remote work or part-time designing clothes. They should have mentioned it somehow

What’s wrong with being a housewife, plus after more than decade, there’s such a thing called maternity leave and if her fashion brand grew she might have hired other employees at some point, including assistants or a team to manage her business while she settles with her new family life. There’s nothing wrong with a woman being in the home with her baby, especially if it’s what she chose, and I’m pretty sure a woman who’s literally a fairytale princess would enjoy motherhood, equal rights and choice and all that.

    • @ropowo
      @ropowo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

Not saying there’s anything wrong with being a housewife, was just disappointed that her business wasn’t even mentioned particularly in regards to the move. If she has a business set up in NYC her moving away would surely impact that. Mat leave is obviously important but there was no mention. If they had said, idk “Giselle moved on from her business to focus on her family” that would have made sense but there was no mention at all

I loved the movie as well surprisingly and I thought it was a decent sequel at most. I do think the movie was rushed and on a much lower budget than the first movie. However, the costuming was beautiful (minus Morgan’s blue dress, I don’t know why but I hate it and it looks so cheap compared to everyone else’s costume.)
Seeing how people mentioned her business, now makes me wonder why it was never mentioned. It was as if it never existed, and this proves that most sequels forget what’s established in their first movie. I am glad to see that none of the characters had an unnecessary change in personality. Even Morgan, I think her growing up shows how she’s changed because she was a little girl and now she’s not.
Overall, I think with a higher budget and whoever worked on the first movie had worked with the second movie it would’ve been perfect. Also if it didn’t seem rushed I think it would be better liked.

What's that you said? You want ORIGINALITY? Are you crazy? I think what was the most disappointing is how the sequel completely abandoned all of the character development of the first movie and, if anything, regressed the characters. I've seen so many suggested plots by other people that have so much more potential. The charm of the first movie was the 'fish out of water' trope and subversion of expectation. By having only Giselle know that the world has changed, it takes away all of the fun of acclimating to the fairytale world for all the other characters. The original movie was self-aware and poked fun at clichés. This movie seemed like it tried to do that but it just came off as unironic. There are far too many unnecessary sub plots too. Half of this movie could have easily been cut, and it would not have impacted the central story line. All this to say that Enchanted was truly ahead of its time. It was great to see the cast again, but this movie was such a missed opportunity.

I did actually like this movie. Morgan was moody in the beginning, but she wasn't mean. She still cared for Giselle and you could tell she outgrew the room, but said she liked it anyway not to hurt Giselle's feelings until her clothes burned. You could see Morgan's patience running out when she said she wanted to figure things out herself and Giselle jumped the gun and the "True daughter of analasia" song made her feel left out. It actually hurt when Morgan said step mom. and you felt Giselle feel bad too. The dynamic between them in the movie made me very invested in it. I do think Robert was underused and Morgan's love interest was unnecessary since he really had no part, but I had fun with the movie.

Like if Morgan and Robert had woken up in fairytale land still themselves and then slowly started to act like their 'fairytale counterparts' and Giselle and Morgan could work together to face the threat of the evil Queen so Morgan's character development would actually happen because she could understand where Giselle comes from and Giselle could truly understand how different Morgan's life is. I kinda get why Morgan went into her teen years like that - having a literal fairy tale princess as your stepmom would be fun for all of about a week, then the constant singing and trying to make everything sugary coated positive would get very old, very very fast. After enough years of having her problems, concerns and serious issues turned into a Disney song with an accompanying positivity pun, I can see why Morgan would be somewhat bitter and withdrawn - she probably doesn't think Giselle is taking her seriously or has any sort of deep, wise or helpful advice on dealing with life's challenges.

I just watched this show and remembered literally loving the original - I'm 23 now and actually enjoyed this movie a bit. I think the first half was a little boring for me but it picked up and even with all its clichés it was very cute and to me really showed the love and reality of having a true and loving step parent. And even the bustle of adult life and living with a long term partner and how the dynamic changes over time. It was really cute when Robert says he loves and is happiest with Giselle. It was definitely a heart warmer for a hopeless romantic like me and the music was kinda on point ngl.

  • @NeytiriPhoenix
    @NeytiriPhoenix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +168

The whole point of Enchanted was to bring a little fantasy to Roberts life and a little reality to Giselles life. They both had lived the opposite and it wasn't the ideal and they each learned valuable lessons coming together in that middle ground. Giselle already learnt the lesson that sometimes reality is better than Fantasy, she did not need to learn it again!
However Morgan was the little girl who loved the fantasy and the magic of Giselle and she grew up and life got harder. They moved to a different place, where she had no friends and it wasn't all fun and friendship like I imagine her childhood was like with Giselle as a stepmother.
If Morgan had then made the wish and gotten a little more than she asked for then this movie would have been about her learning the lesson that Fantasy isn't all it's cracked up to be and reality is ultimately better. It even seemed to be setting this up with Morgan being miserable and calling Giselle her 'Stepmother' and then enviously looking at the wand that was given to her baby sister... I don't understand at all how they deviated from this plot!
Giselle had very little to be miserable about. Sure her life had changed but her outlook hadn't. She wanted to fix everything for Morgan but Morgan was far more miserable with the decision to move and was suffering more because of this decision.
None of the songs really had meaning, Morgan's character became empty and boring after the wish and Nobody seemed to know what to do with Robert so they literally kept sending him away...
The plot would have made 10 times more sense had Morgan made the wish and it could have been a beautiful story about the mother daughter relationship growing and changing as Morgan grew and changed and realised that she was lucky to have Giselle as a mother and realise that a 'stepmother' type character is a far worse prospect than what she had.
It's not an original story, we've seen it a million times before but these writers nowadays are trying to changed the tried and tested storytales to be new an interesting but they change them so much that they just don't make sense anymore.
Also what happened to Giselle's booming Clothing Company? She was making a killing doing that at the end of the first movie and they seemed to completely forget about it. Could have solved Morgan's first day of school issues if her mother had just made her a new outfit over night. She did it twice in the first movie.
Basically while I was watching I couldn't help but keep imagining a better plot.

Before reading this comment i thought the movie was perfect or because i was blinded by nostalgia. But now after reading your comment i realized the movie would have been soo much better if the writers did what you just said. It would make a lot of sense that morgan would make the wish because she was soo miserable and it could have made the movie special in its own way like the first movie did. Thank u soo much for opening my eyes to a way better plot then expected and made me wish the writers thought of that concept. I still like the movie a lot but i much rather would prefer your vision compare to what we got and it could of been a classic for generations to come.

You're welcome I think but I feel like I should apologise haha 🤣 unfortunately that's just my writers brain thinking too much. I ruin most shows for myself by over analysing but for this one the whole time I was thinking... "Why didn't Morgan make the wish?" from the second Giselle took the wand lol.
I really wish they had gone this way cause I'm honestly a sucker for mother daughter dynamic films. They get killed off so often to make the childs life more difficult and harder (well rounded people with healthy childhoods don't make for good tv unfortunately) but I love movies that do explore these relationships and would have absolutely loved if they did that but.... oh well. Gotta be different and try something 'new' even if it doesn't make sense.
I love Enola Holmes for this reason alone.

    • @RaquellyReacts

Hmmm that would have been interesting but the reason Morgan didn’t take the wand in the first place and make a wish was because she didn’t believe she was the true daughter of andalasia but realized that at the end I guess they could have cut some other stuff out for it to make sense.

    • @NeytiriPhoenix

Enchanted was a love letter to Disney fans. It was a commentary on some of the best and worst Disney fairytale tropes and ~why~ some of those tropes needed to be put to rest. (Re: the whole friggin story of The Little Mermaid. Hans Christian Anderson’s original tale feels so much more contemporary compared to what Disney gave us.) It was also a promise to change how their stories were told in the future.
Those in charge of getting Disenchanted made missed the mark on what made the first movie so fresh. It feels like they shot with the first draft of a script or (gulp) decided to bring in a new script after shooting half of the movie and try to work it in with what they’ve already shot. (Re: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness).
I was looking forward to revisiting these. The actors were phenomenal and probably elevated the story they had. But, I am completely disenchanted with Disenchanted.

Besides Giselle's empire and her magical way of making clothes (+ a kiss being the most powerful magic), I think the movie was fine as it was and enjoyed it quite a lot. I'll try to answer questions from my perspective.
First, Giselle probably became strained, tired and disillusioned with her life in New York City. After ten years, she probably felt homesick and wanted to move somewhere that more closely resembled her realm, where she could have a house in a safer neighborhood (after living in NYC for such a long time she probably encountered some nasty people, which don't exist in Andalasia unless they are villains) and with a garden where her baby could play and have more freedom.
A lot of people move to the suburbs after having babies because they want a higher quality life for their children, where there is less pollution, less danger and kids can play outside. It's not uncommon, I would say in fact, that is is very common.
I myself loved abroad for more than ten years and even though it was new and exciting at first, I'm already tired and want to go back to my country if origin. I own my apartment where I live right now and have a few friends and a good job (though my work can be done from anywhere in the world as long as I have a computer). But I keep missing my childhood friends and family, and my friends of now the bond isn't as deep as it is with my childhood friends.
We can also deduce that she and Robert talked at length about the move and be conceded with it by saying he would just commute to work and she probably sold her fashion line. Again, a lot of people work away from home, some people ride trains for three hours just to get to their work place. Many times it's because where they live housing is more affordable and they do not wish to buy a house near their working place for reasons like money to being too busy and loud, etc.
Again, a lot of parents move away and take their children despite them having to lose their friends and environment. Parents will decide what is best for them as a family, not one individual. Being that for the baby it is better to live in a peaceful, safe, beautiful, clean air, big garden house, I would say it's an important matter. We also do not know how Giselle felt those ten years, she already abandoned her magical world for Robert and New York, maybe their relationship was having issues because Giselle wasn't happy anymore, and again, as a family, the best decision would be to move away. It's already two people in the family that the move is being considered for .... Probably three, counting Robert, if it was placing a strain on their relationship.
I can also imagine that Giselle maybe changed her priorities after having a baby. Many women after having a baby will quit their job (it happens a lot in more conservative countries like China, Japan and Korea and being that Andalasia is still stuck in the mentality of a princess being rescued by a prince I would classify them as conservative too).
We also know that any well in the world can serve as a portal to Andalasia, so there was no specific reason for her to stay stuck in NYC because of that. We also do not know if Giselle stopped herself from visiting Andalasia with fear that it would make her regret her choice even more (it happens).
When it comes to clothes, just because Morgan has a different taste than Giselle doesn't mean Giselle will not stop pushing her to dress just like her. A lot of parents are like that, wanting their children to emulate them and just because Giselle is magical doesn't mean she is perfect. She was probably confused as well, Morgan maybe dressed in princess like dresses, made by Giselle, until she was 12 or 13, and then suddenly changed her taste. Being the fact that supposedly there aren't any "angsty teenagers" in Andalasia and women always dress from childhood to adulthood in gown dresses, Giselle was probably confused. Let's not forget that even people in the "normal world" can be dense when it comes to other people's culture and beliefs, yet we live in a world with internet, with access to everything, we can study and learn about anything we want, and we still try to convince others to change their beliefs or make them "see" our way is better.
Also, let's not forget, Giselle clearly had post partum depression, her magical powers were not working ... Animals didn't care about her or listened to her, so it's normal she couldn't magically make a dress for Morgan. The movie did a great job in "showing", not "telling". We were supposed to understand her and everyone else mental state, they were all exhausted mentally and emotionally. Even though Giselle tried to be positive, the actress did a great job, in a lot of scenes, even though she was smiling, i could see her wanting to snap and cry or scream.
Her singing a lot again is also a side effect of her depression, she was trying to soothe herself and being more magic to her life again, when everything was easy. Let's not forget Giselle was basically raised by animals, her understanding of human norms and interactions when it comes to a human family or having children is non-existent. It's fine when you have to take care of a 7 year old child who you can basically just play with and talk to get your point across, another thing is dealing with a newborn baby.
Even new parents with a lot of support and from big families can find themselves in a difficult position when they have their first baby. And being that Robert is a lawyer, he is probably away most of the time for work, Giselle has no one to teach her or help her take care of a baby (like a grandmother or mother or aunt), which again she doesn't understand how to deal with. Especially when in Andalasia babies are magically happy all the time, so intelligent they barely need any care (because again even animals can raise a baby there) and probably always healthy with no dangers (like the baby rolling while sleeping and start losing oxygen).

I liked the concept of Disenchanted, and I think I really enjoyed James Marsden and Idina Menzel more than the MAIN main characters. But I thought there was less substance to the musical numbers and the character development felt a bit more rushed. Giselle literally changed reality and Robert and Morgan were acting against their will, without their knowledge, in roles that Giselle gave them. It was….a bit strange to see them gain consciousness of the growing conflict without getting upset that it happened at all? Idk. I know it’s a Disney movie, so… 😂 Amy Adams is still a legend. It was fun seeing her have these Golum/Smeagol moments as an evil stepmother.
Also, Giselle’s baby is a reference to Sofia the First maybe? 😂 also ever since Avengers Infinity War, it’s like Disney discovered a way to off characters in a sad and clean way. AKA disappearing into a glowing, sparkly dust.

Morgan LOVED princesses and was happy to have Giselle as a stepmom because she was a living Disney princess.
Giselle loved Robert for not being a fairytale, and Morgan loved Giselle for being a fairytale, and this movie tries to erase all that. Giselle isn’t happy without her “prince charming” and “fairytale life” and Morgan is just annoyed by Giselle and her whimsy. It was just kinda sad so watch everything that made these characters charming in the first movie get flopped on its head

I disagree that it undermind the original. The first movie had Giselle learn that there was more to love than what happens in fairy tales, but now she's realizing just how tough the real world is, especially in the areas of parenting. Morgan isn't a whimsical child anymore, and while she did show genuine appreciation that Giselle ensured that she had a bedroom ready for her (Giselle even said she could change the decoration!), bad luck just happened. Breakfast was a disaster, showing that Giselle is struggling with being a caretaker. Giselle's "whimsy" is really just her oversimplifying problems, which makes her come across as out of touch with the situation (and why Morgan gets upset with her). In her moment of weakness, it makes her wish, quite literally, for a time when things weren't so complicated. That's very relatable.

12:25 "It's one of them sassy scrolls that talks like the robot from Treasure Planet."
Nah it's just Alan Tudyk doing his usual voice contribution to a Disney film. Only this time he chose to reprise his role of King Candy. Not sure if that's any better...

The magical town was built in Enniskerry in Ireland. I live in Ireland so I went there and the whole town was completely transformed. It was really cool. It felt like I was in a movie.

I really enjoy your reviews, but I was wondering if you would ever do a video on something like, "Ten films I love but everybody hates"? And then you could touch on infamous films from the last ten years?
Also, I thoroughly agree on how you feel about 'Enchanted', that it is surprisingly relevant and stands on its own!

I was so disappointed in this sequel. I wish the plot had gone in the opposite direction. Like I would've loved to see Giselle's experiences with motherhood and Morgan trying to make friends at her new school while her stepmom tries to fit in with the other moms. And then by the end, they both realize they don't necessarily need to fit in, because being unique is much more special, or something like that. An actual continuation of Giselle's story would've been so much more interesting and relevant in my opinion.

Yeah tbh I would have loved it if it just stayed in the real world most of the time and it’s more about them (Giselle/Robert/Morgan) trying to fit in in Monroeville, eventually realising that they don’t need to (although more scenes in Andalaisia too would be nice)

It's not same writer and director. So it explains why the sequel is kinda dissapointing and has a lot of mix reviews.

Giselle is the most innocent and kind being in the universe and didn't deserve to go through this emotional mess of a movie.

I actually thought Disenchanted was fun. Although I really do wish they would have mad Sophia older and that whole sibling rivalry could have worked better. But in all, I liked it.

I'd also like to say that even though it didn't seem like Robert had a purpose in this movie, that was his purpose. In the fairy tale world, he becomes a hero and finds his worth. Hence why he goes on to open his own practice.

I forgot almost every song from that movie that I watched yesterday, except that Evil Contest between Evil Giselle and Evil Judge From The Good Place, that one lives in my head now. Also another great aspect from the movie that stayed from the original : amazing costumes. That peacock dress is perfection.

Honestly the whole memories/true love's kiss being the most powerful magic thing could've been so easily resolved. They lampshade so much tropes in the first movie, so just have Idina say that line, then follow it up with a deadpan, 'Well, that and true love's kiss. And clocks striking midnight. And objects guarded by dragons. And...' It's an easy joke, and problem solved. They could have Amy saying it too, in Giselle's trademark naïve fashion, but I think it'd work better with Idina. Who, by the way, should never be forced to have bangs, damn they did her a disservice here.
