I think something that is scarily overlooked is that She refers to the short guy as “Grumpy” so she knows OR at least is aware of the Story of Snow White…
When in the end of the movie the queen hag extends the apple out to her and say “all this pain will go away with one bite”
Giselle should know of Poison Apples especially since she is aware of Snow White, so she fully and willingly took the Poisoned Apple. I feel this was completely dark because she was willing to un-alive herself because the thought of not being with Robert was tragically heartbreaking.

Also!! I love how they didn't villainise Nancy! Movies, especially the 2000's ones, do it so often. Just make the rival girl a total bitch and practically a villain. Nancy, on the other hand, was just a normal woman who wanted her romance and love and gracefully let go of Robert when she realised they weren't meant for each other. AND they gave her her happily ever after, too! Almost unheard of in 2000's movies and honestly, in movies today, too.

    • @benzaiten933

When I watched the deleted scenes of this movie it really made me understand Nancy and Robert better. Nancy has her own scene talking to a friend about her relationship. Something I actually like when they’re trying wake Giselle up, is when Edward tries and fails, he goes over to Robert and he’s like “please kiss the woman I love,” and he’s not like “she loves me and only me.” He just wants to wake up Giselle because he cares, and he accepts that she loves someone else. That’s what I like about Edward.

Okay let's say Edward and Giselle had gotten married and inherited the throne. They both probably wouldn't notice, care, or in any way be suspicious if the evil queen just kept ruling from behind the scenes, as Yzma attempts to do in Emperor's New Groove.

One thing that I only realized during my last rewatch of this masterpiece is that the step mother really just did _not_ have to kill Giselle. I mean the whole thing is that if Edward gets married that would somehow dethrone her so for his whole life she's just tried to keep Edward away from all young maidens, not that she totally could've killed him at any point to just avoid it ever becoming an issue but she never did.
Anyway as we all know Giselle is an issue she gets sent to our world, Edward goes after her and Nathaniel jumps in to try and poison Giselle, but that's when the whole thing goes sideways. Because the queen _obviously_ notices that Giselle is starting to fall for Robert. It would be so much smarter AND easier for her to stop trying to kill Giselle and instead push her towards Robert and lead her to making the choice that everyone already knew she was ultimately going to make anyway. The queen could set it up so that Edward comes to rescue Giselle to find that she is happy and in love with another man which could potentially shatter his image of love forever and make him think he will be much happier alone. The queen would get to continue being queen without killing anyone, Edward would never find out that his step mother is evil, Giselle would still be happy with Robert and think that she made the right decision by herself, literally no suspicions would be raised, ever.

Something I really like about the ballroom scene that I noticed but didn't fully understand as a kid is how Gizelle, who is the definition of a fairytale princess that wears puffy and big dresses that are over the top, is instead dressed in a very slim, modern, and understated dress. Meanwhile Robert who is very much NOT a fairytale guy and is overall a realist and dresses simply, it now decked out inmuch more elegant and fairytale-escue attire. Idk, I just like on how they are dressed completely opposite to their personalities and I've always wondered if that was done on purpose.

I'm so late! I don't think so. I feel like once Edward is married, he's eligible to take his father's throne -- as Narcissa is widowed to the rightful King. He's now married to Nancy, which places him in the status to rule. I found that it didn't make sense, because he's the Prince by blood, he should've been able to rule without a bride, so... It's more confusing the more I explain, but... That's Disney for you 🤭

In 2010 my high school theatre club (in the Philippines) did an adaptation of Enchanted and I played Giselle.
I guess it was underrated at that time because the “mature” storyline wasn’t relatable to kids. At 12 years old, I appreciated how different it was from the typical/classic Disney fairytales we see. If it were released in the mid 2010s, people would appreciate it more.

I feel like it's more about him not wanting to tap into what could lead to a heated discussion about black women's discomfort in other people going into their personal space. In my years of cosmetology, black women view their hair as an extension of their autonomy and spiritual connection to the world, and not just aesthetic expression. Having a stranger touch you without consent -- especially without knowledge of where their hands have been -- can feel very strange and a violation of their bubble. I understand that it can be fascinating and beautiful (trust, even I still love to touch a person's hair, if it's pretty) but we have to be kind and understanding that not everyone is okay with it. I hope that helps

I do have to say though, as someone who loves hair of all kinds, I think there's a little bit of a stigma related to white people liking the hair styles that black people, whether men or women, wear, because it's assumed to be just based on race. Hair is gorgeous and should be taken care of no matter your background, and having someone appreciate your hair that could literally take hours to do, can be very rewarding. Shoot, I have clients of All hair types, so I tend to even do their hair in my head. Still... It's a history thing, and with the generational trauma that's rooted in one's DNA, as it pertains to being treated like an exhibit, but also ridiculed in the next breath for that very thing, it just becomes sacred, but I do understand that hair can be really universally fun and extra! And you just wanna look with your hands! I Do appreciate you understanding the importance of consent, and how precious that can be to all races, and I also do respect that not all non-blacks want to stick their hands in folk's heads 🤭🤭🤭

I fell in love with this movie when I saw it in theaters and rushed to get the DVD when it was released; that closeup on their kiss, though, was intense on the big screen. Just sayin'. This movie is basically Disney writing itself a love letter while also poking fun at its tropes. Also, the amount of Easter eggs in this movie are insane, like the voices of Pocahontas and Belle also being featured, "Part of Your World" playing in the background of Robert's office while his secretary was also present, etc. (IMDb has a long list of them.). I especially like the hindsight irony of how Idina Menzel as Elsa says, "You can't marry a man you just met," in "Frozen" and yet. .. well... her character does just that in this movie.

Enchanted is a great movie. It pays respect to the old Disney cartoons. It also does make fun of some of the funny things that Disney does like having people fall in love with each other instantly. There are a lot of really funny moments in this movie.

I very much enjoy this movie. It's just so fun, and when it came out, it was pretty groundbreaking for the twisted fairytale thing. But seriously, the evil queen had no earthly reason to be so hot.
It was kind of sweet that my dad just HAD to take his three adult daughters to go see it. (seriously, my youngest sister was 21 and I was nearly 30...)

You know it’s interesting that the true loves kiss thing came from Snow White but in earlier versions of the story, like the one I grew up on, the prince actually just dislodges the poisoned apple from her throat and that’s what saves her.

It's pretty much my favorite Disney movie. Amy Adam's is just delightful and the whole movie is so self aware of what it is and what it's trying to do. And the music is phenomenal.
The real reason it took so long to get a sequel made is a contract dispute between Adams and Disney, if I remember correctly. The movie was planned to launch a new princess with sequels, a TV show and characters in the parks. But Amy Adams wouldn't agree to sign away her likeness for merchandising and would only commit to things on a film by film basis instead of agreeing to a long term contract after this movie came out.
Several scripts had been proposed but they all stalled because Disney wasn't willing to cut her in on merchandising of her likeness, essentially. I guess they (or her, possibly) changed their stance.

The final, lightning-struck battle is a homage to the battles in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast.
The song they dance to at the ball, called So Close, took heavy inspiration from the title song from Beauty and the Beast.
The telenovela has a bunch of references in one:
The female soap star “Angela” (so named for Angela Lansbury, who voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast) is played by Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle. “Angela” is arguing with a man named “Jerry” (Jerry Orbach voiced Lumiere) because she’s having an affair with a man named “Ogden” (David Ogden Stiers voiced Cogsworth). This soap opera scene is scored with music from Beauty and the Beast.
Tangled was still in development when this movie aired, so the Rapunzel play you see in That's How You Know is a nod to that. And the little girl is the director's daughter, I believe.
The neighbor with a bunch of kids, the one that said Edward was "too late", was the voice actress for Pocahontas.
the people around the bus when the prince stabbed it aren't extras. They're real tourists!
The Italian restaurant they were eating at was called Bella Notte, in reference to the song from Lady and the Tramp
Yep, you guessed it, the reporters name is a reference too:
Her name is Mary Ilene Caselotti, which is a reference to Mary Costa (the voice of Aurora), Ilene Woods (the voice of Cinderella) and Adriana Caselotti (the voice of Snow White).
The troll was wearing Ariels shell earrings, and his loincloth had Cinderellas maid outfit, and auroras rose outfit, Belle’s village dress, and Snow White’s rags.
Nancy's last name is Tremaine, in reference to the evil stepmother from Cinderella.
This gets even better when you remember she WAS the stepmother in Camille's Cinderella
The pink flowers on Giselles dress are actually little Mickey mouses. Same goes for the bus drivers hair.
Robert's last name is Phillip, in reference to Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty
That's How You know is meant to be a mix of Kiss the Girl and Under the Sea. There's even a boat scene reference.
The caramel apple drizzle is meant to look like the skull design on the poison apple from snow white.
One of the old men in the That's How You Know number was a chimney sweep in Mary Poppins.
The hotel the Prince and Nathaniel are staying at is called the Grand Duke, in reference to Cinderellas Grand Duke
