    What was always insane to me is that people were actually surprised that Elle was accepted to Harvard & they act like she only got accepted because she was hot in her admissions essay video. When in reality her 4.0 in Fashion Merchandizing would classify as a business degree & she got a 179 on her LSAT (180 is a perfect score) so her score was incredibly high!!
    There really wasn't a reason to not accept her into the law program!!

      Ikr, even in the scene of the video they mention all the credits she have and they agree on accepting her. So it's actually funny what happens there, because there are two optipns: (1) she is well prepared and the video only helped her to overcome the misogyny of the institution by making them feel embarrassed of their sexual arousal or (2) she's accepted because of how she looks only, which only would ment that they are just horrible and unprofessional, which leads to the question which prestige Harvard have if their rulers are like super trash. Either way, Elle is not responsible for their misogyny and shouldnt stop herself for applying in the best way she believed (which bc of her background as beauty contester, it is not absurd)

      To be fair, in the musical two of the assistants mainly want to admit her because she’s pretty. Unlike other underdog movies, where the protagonist fuels their ambitions with the hate and doubt others throw at them, Elle succeeds by doing the opposite. Instead of focusing on her haters/doubters, she channels her energy towards her allies, which include her sorority sisters, Emmet, Paulette, Brook, and even her dog Brewser. She doesn't hold grudges or keep tabs. If you were rude to her yesterday, but are nice today, she focuses on today, allowing you to save face. At the same time, she's no pushover, and respects herself enough to give as good as she gets. When faced with adversity, she handles herself with grace and poise, works hard behind the scenes, then comes back and tries her best.

      @@bordercolliegirl7878 lmao what? Did you even WATCH the movie? No, she didn't get in based only on looks or being sexualized. She got a 179 on her LSATS, which was higher than the score she would AT LEAST need. She worked her ass off to do that and she already had a 4.0 GPA. She also got in because of her work in her sorority (making faux fur undies for charity, which the admissions board recognized as being philanthropic and a lover of animals) and it was also showed that she had an appreciation for music (Ricky Martin video). Harvard never had a fashion major, either, before Elle and figured it would be nice to have some diversity amongst the other students' majors. The only men who sexualized her were Callahan and some boys on her move-in day and during a game of football that she was sunbathing during. No one on the admissions board saw her and accepted her just because she's a beautiful woman. She got in through hard work and determination. The whole movie is her proving just how smart that she, a pretty blonde girl from California, can be and that she's so much more than something nice to look at. This comment is so insulting lmao

      A woman also doesn't need to be feminine to succeed or be percieved as competent (this is a problem in some places)

    • @rayofsunshineb5347
      @rayofsunshineb5347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +247

      @@thisisntallowed9560 the problem is that nowadays feminine is seen as a negative thing at least in America (where I'm from). There is nothing wrong with not only acknowledging but celebrating her femininity even if it can be seen as "traditional" considering nowadays you have to appear less feminine and more masculine to be seen as successful or powerful. Both can be appreciated.

    • @ruelovegood398
      @ruelovegood398 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @This isn't allowed I get your point but I haven't seen a film where it was implied that a woman needs to be feminine in order to be successful, it has always been the other way around. However, women who are not traditionally feminine are often considered as less of a women, eg: they'll not be a good partner/wife/girlfriend etc. There is even stereotypical jokes that successful career driven women end up alone or become cat lady. That's why I made the point about femininity and strength being seen as opposite qualities. 'I'm not like the other girls' trope has been used in movies for years to make femininity look like a negative thing, this movie defied it. The important thing is to acknowledge that there should be no definite rules for femininity, it should be an individual's choice. If someone chooses to be feminine in short hair, let her; if someone chooses to be feminine in pink, let her be as well. No need to pit them against each other, or villify them for their choices 😇

I got darker skin, dark eyes, dark hair, yet I was able to identify with her & see her as my role model. She was the reason I wanted to become a lawyer when I grow up.
      People nowadays always have to see their twin in a show/movie/game to be able to identify with them & that is wrong. She is a strong female, THAT'S what matters. & todays society trying to villainize these kind of women is wrong. Everybody should be allowed to be who they are. You're not like other girls? Cool! You're somebody who is girly? Also cool. Doesn't mean any of those are a bad thing to be. This whole new trend on villainizing extreme femininity is catty bitch behavior.

      I think the negative reactions Elle has to deal with at Harvard also have a lot to do with her being new money. Her fashion is very loud (unlike the sedate and conservative clothes you see in old money families) and she wasn't socialised in the nuances of upper-class behaviour. It would make her stick out among students from old money and at least some of them would think less of her because of it.

    This movie was waaayy ahead of it's time. I don't even think it's a rom com. Like, yes she gets the better guy in the end in classic rom-com fashion, but that is not what this movie is about. She is uncompromisingly herself from beginning to end. She starts the movie with the strength, determination, and intelligence to be whatever she wants to be. This is a female empowerment story where she learns that she is only limited by the boxes she allows herself to be placed in. Once she recognizes "oh, i can be more than just a lawyer's wife- i can be a lawyer!" she shocks everyone with her success because she does it on her own terms. I definitely have a newfound respect for this story 20 years later.

I was, like, 13 when i realized that (not only from my experience, but older friends too), and then my "I'm not like other girls" phase started. Wish I've seen this movie then.
    Still, the thing about being extremely underestimated for being pretty and girly is that you get to see the looks on people's faces when you succeed and it's hilarious, and this movie captures the experience perfectly lol It's also really good when you see other girls embracing feminility in their own way because you started something.

    Legally blonder is so ahead of its time that even today’s movies could never. Netflix just focuses on the quirky, relatable girl which is never neither quirky or relatable. Elle was beautiful, fun, loving and smart. Vivien was smart but was shown to really just depend on her brains and even Warren. She went from mean girl who stope the guy to being her own person who saw herself and Elle for all her worth. Like this movie has so many transitions. You think for a minute that Warren would even see Elle for the way she is and choose her. But nope he turned out to be the jackass who got left alone. Elle didn’t need Warren and neither did Vivien
