    This is the most metal movie ever released under the Disney umbrella. It literally opens with a child murder, and the Sanderson sisters get so excited 'cause they think the guy in the Satan costume is actually him. Then one of them mentions her stay in the underworld. I think the best explanation for this movie I’ve ever seen was in a Tumblr post speculating about what the actors were told during filming. Their theory was that Winnie’s actress was told: “This is camp, just do whatever you want,” Mary’s actress was told: “Your character is basically an evil golden retriever,” Sarah’s actress was told: “Just act like you’re on all the drugs,” and the kids were told that this was a very serious horror movie and they’d be in trouble if they didn’t treat it as such.

    The reason Allison was so chill was because she was a witch too. There was a follow up book where it was revealed that Allison was the descendant of a fourth Sanderson sister who refused to be evil like the rest of her family. Max and Allison's daughter was tricked into casting a spell that caused all the witches in Hell to trade places with mortals on Earth.

    • @ithildins
      @ithildins ปีที่แล้ว +51

      we read different sequels, then - paige or poppy or whatever their daughter's name was WASN'T the descended witch - it was the new girl who'd moved in (the one they turned into a dog for most of the book) - the better storyline would definitely have been that max and allison's daughter was a witch, since winifred makes the comment that allison is a "clever little white witch" for using the salt circle - i ranted a LOT after reading the sequel book and was highkey disappointed
      i'm actually hoping the writers for the sequel movie make it so allison daughter's is a witch to bring the Sanderson Sisters back from the dead again, since it would make more sense.

    I was 12 when this came out, and I've watched it on Halloween ever since. :) It's the one scary movie I'd watch as a tradition. (I'm an overly sensitive person who hates to be scared, and when I was a kid, my sensitivity to horror was at 10,000%. For kid-me, this was a horror movie.)
    It was an absolutely awesome part of that year for me. I loved it! As for knowing the words "OD'd," Yeah, we were kids in the 90's, and that kind of content was all over the media in the news and whatever, along with schools always telling you not to do drugs, so we learned that term early on. We were kids. Not completely morons. Morons, yes, but not *complete* morons. Anyway, I love this movie, and my 12th year was still one of the best years of my life to date for a few reasons, so yeah. My life went to hell after that for a good... years still going.
    Allison wasn't phased by Dani, because a) she's a girl and b) she's not taking an 8 year old seriously, because kids come with zero filter.
    Hey, the boob jokes were funny! That was classic humor back then. I remember laughing so hard I had to pee at the yabos joke. :D Everyone was also laughing at Madonna's ridiculous torpedo-tits bra in reality at that time. Since that was new-ish, that reference still landed.
    As a kid, I didn't completely get that bus driver (yay for being Ace), but I did understand the very obvious innuendo. Now as an adult, that guy's got so much confidence he's bleeding swag. I still wouldn't go near him, though.
    In my honest opinion, Disney peaked at made-for-t.v Halloween movies with this one. I've yet to see anything else they've made since come close to this. Halloween town was cringy AF, and nowhere near the level of Hocus Pocus.
    This was a fun, creepy, spooky movie that had a storyline, a plot, no character was better than another, (I'm looking at you, Disney's girl-boss fever that makes me want to barf - and I'm a girl!)
    The Hocus Pocus 2 movie they made had a few good parts (like the beginning scene - I'm terrified of spiders, and Mary's roombas, calling back to her being forced to use a vacuum as a broom. :D But 70% of that movie was Disney 2010's cheesy safe-for-the-kiddies, eye-squinting camp so bad you got second hand embarrassment for the actors.

    Alison doesn’t react negatively to the discussion of her Yabbos because Alison, as depicted in the scene and throughout the movie, is suppose to be the mature, sophisticated, humble and understanding character. That and maybe naïveté. Plus she thinks it’s cute coming from Danny. Alison understands that Danny doesn’t understand the young adult world and allows her to be cute and innocent.

    I actually liked how they had the Sanderson sisters sort of become more familiar with modern-day culture as the movie progressed (aka, for instance realizing that people stopped believing in supernatural stuff, so when Max tried to call them out at the dance they just played along). Yeah, it was a stretch that they were able to pick up so many things in one night, but it meant it became harder and harder to fool them, which upped the tension in the climax.
    Also, as anyone with a much younger sibling will probably tell you, they can embarrass you to no end in front of your peers. Just absolutely no filter whatsoever. That part of Dani they go so right that it easily made her the best non-Sanderson character.

You know, children AREN'T adults. They have neither the life experience nor the brain development of adults, which is why we don't just let them run "amuck, amuck, amuck!" They don't make good decisions. They are extremely susceptible to peer pressure, etc., esp. as teens.

    The prevalence of adult humor/scenarios in children's media (television and film) in the 90's and earlier probably had a great deal to do with the fact many homes that had televisions only had one and the whole family used it. So, children's shows and movies needed to have something for the adults to not wanna bash their heads into a wall while watching or even allow it to be played in the first place. Like you pointed out, a lot of these adult jokes & scenarios were just shrugged off by the kids. And, if your kid did understand them? You probably already had bigger problems~^.^

      @vixxcelacea2778 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      There is actually a 30 year study that came out in 2021 in regards to sex education and prevention of child abuse, healthy relationships, teen pregnancy etc. If the kid understands the jokes, that's not a bad thing. It seems that developmentally appropriate comprehensive education should start as early as kindergarten. So a 9-13 year old watching probably should get the jokes if they are educated. They might not understand certain euphemisms though until they are older or pick up on body/voice cue subtext.
      So disagree that if the kid did understand them that it was a problem. I think people today just assume that puberty doesn't happen till 14 years or something.

They are already using your arguement to justify their sick movement. You also must be okay with child brides as well. They marry off children because of early development.
      Children understanding innuendos wasn't a problem in the 90s, because groups like MAPS weren't allowed the exist. This would have been a win/win for Max. If he lit the candle, and nothing happened, Allison would have to admit that he was right and magic wasn't real. With the whole “Them having no reaction.”, and Max’s logic with the black flame candle, I have my theories. For Alison having no reaction, the first case is in school when Max gives her his number, and it’s obvious she didn’t want to make a big deal of it and make the public interaction more embarrassing. And after school, similar story. At her party, with Dani’s comment, I think a similar thing too. She didn’t want to make a scene in her house, during a party, and in front of Dani. So she went with it, and moved on. (Also small rant, but I LOVE how Alison acts like a big sister towards Dani. Constantly watching her, holding on to her, and talking with her. They just met that day, and her and her brother aren’t even in a official relationship until later in the movie/after the movie, and the two already act like sisters.) But the more upsetting theory, is that Alison is just used to dumb comments. She is the pretty and smart rich girl, who stands out in class, loves mysterious Halloween, her Mom ran the famous Sanderson Sisters’ House Museum, she has a big party every year, she seems very social and popular. She probably has a lot of boys crushing on her, and with that, has heard a fair share of rude and dumb things that she had just learned to deal with. Even after Max gives her his number, a random guy basically tells him there’s no chance. He seems like he was in Max’s place once, and made similar embarrassing moves. And now feels the need to speak on her behalf. And for the actual Hocus Pocus stuff, the three of them, and later four of them, are actually all always scared and having big reactions when it comes to jump scares and the witches doing stuff to them. The only time they don’t have a BIG reaction I guess is when they all hear Binx talk for the first time. But at that point, Max had already heard Binx talk and had his big reaction, and for Dani and Alison, after all they saw and experienced already, hearing the random cat Max has had them follow talk is probably not that shocking. Especially since he seemed to be helping them. Especially for Alison. She knows and believes in (At least to our knowledge, because she also says “So the legends are true.”, as if she had doubts.) in Thackeray Binx and the story. She’s the one that recognizes him. So she probably would suspect him to talk more than anyone. And finally for Max’s black flame candle plan, he didn’t believe in the candle. So he thought no matter who lit the candle, nothing would happen. But to the best of his knowledge, Alison believed something would happen if someone lit the candle. And she knew that the person prophesied to bring the witches back would be a virgin. So he thought by lighting the candle, nothing would happen, cause it’s fake. But to Alison, who thinks something would happen, and seeing it didn’t, would realize he wasn’t the prophesied virgin, and that would someone make Max cooler. Cause it was never that it had to be a virgin who brought the witches back, it could be anyone, but it was prophesied that it would be a virgin. That was the only characteristic (if you can call it that) of the candle lighter. But those are just my theories and interpretations. I love this movie and couldn’t help but rant.

    As a child of the 90's, none of this "adult" content hit home because we were a bit more innocent than kids today. We didn't have the internet at our finger tips. Or shows like Euphoria. I'm honestly glad I was able to grow up when I did. I had the opportunity to be a kid without the pressure of having to be up on the latest tik tok dance. I also never worried if my outfits were "hawt" enough for school.

    • @SocialLocust
      @SocialLocust ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Idk I think kids nowadays can talk to more people and find out which situations they are in are actually wrong and can find support and other people who relate to their problems. They also have more opportunity to learn various hobbies, which can really help kids find the right people to befriend and keep them out of trouble. I had zero role models growing up and since I both lived in a small town and my house didn't have cable either, I just was not connected to the world, so basically, I just grew up around a bunch of racists, etc, thinking that that was normal and not understanding that they were being bad people.

      As a child of the 90s, I haven't heard anyone use the term "hawt" since 2006. But even so, that's more of a you thing. There's just as much or as little pressure on people to look a certain way in school, those who wanted to stand out as the "hawt" people, and those just doing their own thing/trying to blend in. I'd say it's nice to not have to worry about keeping up with the latest memes/trends/slang seeing as by like the second time you see or use it you'll have someone telling you that's old news, seeing as there's something new that "everyone" already knows about. I'm grateful to be old enough that when people ask me if I've seen this or that show/meme I can just make some dad-like grumbles about too much to do and naps and stuff.

    I actually think this movie is a very clever way to scare kids and make them aware of dangerous predators through a fictional and magical story. I loved the movie back in the day and I still do now. There is a lot of realism behind it in my opinion. The kids aren't supposed to fully understand the sexual jokes but they will get the terrifying message of 3 people hunting down kids to cause them harm. I also find it interesting that the 3 dangerous people in question are portrayed by women (which you are more likely to trust as a kid) showing that a potential predator could be anybody.

      That was a good fun fact. I looked it up and it blew my mind for a sec. 👌

      It's the voice of Goofy's son Max from 'A Goofy Movie' (and other Disney stuff, lol) - Jason Marsden. ...Why 'McGee' couldn't have done the voice himself, I have no idea, lol.

      @@KitKat_Kt I couldn't remember his name when I wrote my comment. I never can remember it without looking it up. Anyways its Sean Murray. I have no idea why they decided to dub over his voice, maybe he just didn't sound right? But yes Jason Marsden does the voice of Binx the cat. He does all the lines, because you can tell it wasn't Sean talking near the end.

      My parents now like Hocus Pocus more because McGee’s actor is in it (they’re big NCIS fans) while I’m like “Whatever.” cause I instill like it for why I liked it as a kid. The Sanderson Sisters.

      @@JackalopeBunny I don't know why people say he plays the voice of the cat. He plays Binx's voice as a human, too. Just say he plays the voice of Thackery Binx. It's not like they had Sean talking when in human form and then had Jason play his voice as a cat. Jason is his voice in both forms.
