[4k] GSX Dry Assembly Begins

  • The Dry assembly is the process where you verify your oil clearance and all the parts specifications of your engine's rotating assembly. It involves both precision and non-precision tools. The dry assembly is complete once all of the specifications have been verified to be correct. It is a sanity check. It's what gives you the peace of mind the first time you fire up your engine that the numbers you measured also match how the parts fit once they're installed.
Because this engine block has experienced significant changes from its factory specifications, received 2 coatings for both aesthetics as well as performance reasons... AND will be using a different crankshaft than it was originally built with... AND the addition of a bearing girdle to add the strength necessary to the bottom end for my power goals with this build... I have to give extra scrutiny to the dry assembly process. The engine will not be assembled until I achieve the specifications I need.
If you pay someone to assemble your engine, you don't see or hear about all the effort required to deliver a finished product. The obstacles that arise are someone else's problems to fix. If you want an honest video about this, none of your results will work properly the first time. Sometimes not even on the second, third, fourth times, etc... Nobody in TV production or
If you choose to assemble your own engine, ALL these challenges become yours. Hopefully my efforts to do this here, a very different build than other projects you've watched here, will help anyone accepting this challenge understand problems they might encounter. I'd want them to appreciate how the dry assembly process can save not only their investment of time and money on their project, but their sleep schedule and peace of mind. When you know for a fact that your parts fit and that your clearances are correct, then you can turn that key for the first time with confidence. If there's a problem, then you know what the problem is, and what it isn't.
In this video we play with the before and after results with a torque plate. We explore the use of rod bolt stretch gauges. We open up the discussion about casting stress loads and how they can affect the outcome of your build. We also even discuss the affect that repetition, fatigue and haste can play on the person assembling it. How the intended use of the engine can also affect your specifications.
A stock build should be by the book, and by "book", I mean service manual. Not my videos. Follow those specifications and procedures. If it's a performance build, all those values change. You can follow performance specifications with stock parts and achieve better durability under power output levels beyond the factory's designed limits (and I proved it with a different project), but it will ultimately shorten the lifespan of that engine.
So, if your pistons or crankshaft don't fit inside the block, watch this: • [4K] GSX Block Prep 8 ...
It's the companion video and complete dry assembly video where I do it by the book. Literally.
Alternatively for the crankshaft, if it's only off by a couple of tenths or you suspect a defect, you can watch this: • Crankshaft Refurbishing
If your bearings don't fit, or you want to see the full dry assembly process, watch this: • Hyundai Assembly 1 - B...
If you don't want to take my instruction about torque plates, go visit RoniBuilt for a second opinion here: • Reasons To Use A Torqu...
If you want to learn how to keep plastigauge from sticking to journals, you're just going to have to subscribe to High Performance Academy and just watch their livestreams. They delete them, but they re-run them. Epic advice, demonstrations and info. Everyone who cares about building their own performance engines should already be subscribed to them. You're not taking training courses on my channel, this is just an automotive diary with half-decent presentation. If you want to run with the pros, you'll need to follow the advice of the pros.

@@Jafromobile - My friend used to work for Nissan, but was never apart of the actual assembly. She was curious about the process, and what happened after her stage in the "assembly line". Luckily you were here to assist. While waiting for your next video, I'll be watching Mike Patey build some kick ass aircraft. Highly recommended, since you are undoubtedly a man of high standards and work ethics.

Great video. The first one of your videos I ever saw was the one where you spun a bearing in this motor, which helped console me after I had just ruined a 4.6L F-150 engine by screwing up a rod bearing replacement. This video feels like things have come full circle for this engine. It's also an example of why I always thing of you when mechanical things are frustrating, not going as planned, and taking forever. You say you're not that patient, but your way of re-framing how you think about things makes you practically a garage zen master in my book. Thanks again for all the great work!

Watching Jafro makes me feel better about having to rebuild my 2-stroke dirt bike engine. All bearings are ball, roller, or needle - if they're new they're good. There's only 4 bearings anyway. Check end gap, make sure piston has no missing chunks. Piston on rod, jam the barrel over it, head on that, tighten 5 nuts. Pipe on, carburetor on, fuel line on, fresh plug. Get a big boot and kick. Do accidental 3rd-gear wheelie. Argue with neighbors about the noise and smoke. Done.

such an awesome series to watch over the years. it really drove home to me that i'd rather pay someone else to do this because i clearly can't handle this process on my own. I hope to do such an in depth build on my own but for now i'll settle with watching these awesome vids.

When you venture deeply into the performance category, your tool budget takes a hit. If you go... like... medium into it? Yeah, it's not like this at all. I didn't start out building an engine like this. I went medium into it. The stuff that was deep, I paid someone to do that for me the first time. No regrets. The key is to set attainable goals. You'll keep winning and setting bigger ones like it ain't no thang. Next thing you know, you'll be wasting away in your garage shooting TH-cam videos.

you have the right feeling to built an engine a little tip if you want..the Crush point of the bearings always changes the measurment if tighten the bolts more than 2 times...and the plastigauge always gone on the rods even when you tighten the rod better buy some dial gauge will make your life better and less nervous..and king bearings are more accurate in taper try them

@@jpkillah1 You're totally right. And I do remember you being there. Back when I made short Standard Def videos because TH-cam wouldn't let me do anything else. I bought the Colt 2 years before I started the channel, and I was building it anyway... It was only supposed to be 2 cars. You know the whole rest of the story. The channel's success has been an accident and a blessing, and it appears to me that you've been a trend setter.

My best advice is that you should be prepared for long delivery times and machinists who keep your equipment for a year at a time each time you see them for something. I like my machinists, but I'm about to go collect my equipment and drive to Florida with it. Work is not getting done. My entire life is on hold because of it.

Another informative and entertaining one Jafro. I thought I knew the feeling of having to repeat the tedious task over and over again with the Minibishi, but this definitely takes the cake. Keep up the hard work and I hope to run against this at the strip some day, be it the shootout or somewhere else.

Hey Jafro I used to work at GRP rods, we made aluminum rods for super high horsepower applications from 4 cylinders all the way up to top fuel. We did not dowl the rods together we cut teeth between the cap and rod that stuck together just right. I know not that helpfull in your case but just thought id share! Thanks for the videos man.

How can I trust myself!? Building my motor and doing my best to be precise as possible and learn as I go. Thank you for the inspiration and knowledge, I have many sleepless nights ahead.

    About camera focus-
CCD thrive on IR absorbency to get a RAST and edge
of perception. If a surface is too blingy,
it will scatter rather than reflect; too dark-
you get _refraction_. Putting an IR absorbent
substrate in the path (hand) will change focus.
Ambient temperature and humidity of a substrate
    will also effect focus length.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, I figured that out with the old camera. It had MUCH BETTER focus routines than this one. Better sensors, bigger lens, just not 4K. I miss using it. But even it had problems with shiny things because the IR would bounce off and reflect the distance to the thing in the reflection.
