I think between the RR, this and the single R, the M1000R is still the best compromise of the 3 bikes. Comfortable upright position but not top heavy and rather light at 199kg.
Each of these bikes have their application where they all are best at. Which one is best is determined by one;s intended use. I for one absolutely love naked bike category for street riding, but for track use I prefer supersports, and let me tell you from lots of experience traveling at pace for a week or even for a couple of long days on a naked bike is not as pleasant as on something like this. If you don’t plan on doing much “touring” I would definitely just get a naked, but if you are this is a much better option
@@TheSuperpod agreed for the intended use case. I was waiting for the XR but had the chance to ride a M1000R and it was all over. Looking at all 3 of them now, I get the most use out of the naked R in my personal case.
I've been waiting for the bike like this! Max non-detuned power with easily available race exhaust and tune options, max electronic gizmos with ability to switch off wheelie control, minimum weight, "Ducati like" carbon and milled parts and all that in a comfortable package that can be used for say 4 day ~1000-mile trips with minimum luggage aimed at moving at descent pace through some incredible twisty roads without having to stop for gas all the time, not feeling beat up by the wind or aggressive riding position, or having to put on and shed merino wool layers incessantly due to large ambient temperature swings between mountains and the coast. Carbon wheels from the manufacturer is just icing on the cake. Only with all that I am ready to buy "the boring sounding inline 4" again after multiple V4s and V-twins.
and when you rev it out it's not even that boring sounding anymore ;) But yeah, V4 sound is about the only thing that could make this bike better I reckon
After many sports and naked ICEs, I currently ride a Livewire One, 0-60mph in three seconds. But the truth is the biggest, most powerful bikes are not the ones we ride fastest. I found over the years that the best-handling 600-700cc bikes are the sweet spot for me (Triumph triples, CBR 600rr; etc.). Current HP figures only make sense on the track in most countries. Certainly in the Paris region, there would be no where for miles I could exploit more than 30% of that beast.
I had the '15 XR and the '22 model. I liked the '22 but it felt like they were trying to make a road exclusive version of the GS (I'm very aware that 99.9% of GS owners never go offroad, mind); in contrast the '15 felt like they were making a slightly more comfortable RR. The '22 felt slow, much slower than I remember the '15 being, there was almost no power in the low RPM where the old model would pretty much power wheelie any time you flicked the throttle. Love that they put the shift cam in the M1000XR, hopefully it makes it to the base model. I'd be interested in a review of the base M1000XR (non competition spec), I wonder if maybe the extra weigh of the non-carbon accesories might make the bike a bit liveable.
With that paint job it's a candidate for Get Your Rat Out - it even has blue anodised parts. It may be stupidly fast, but I'd rather have the V4S Multistrada - so much more refined and classy than Shell Suit Barry.
As a very long time BMW rider. My favorite BMW of all time is my HP2 Sport. I have owned S1000RRs and now the M1000RR. Tested Ducs and KTms but they feel aggressive when nothing is really happening. A short "easy" stint and I was fatigued like I spent all day at the track. The BMWs are easy and smooth and then when you want to go bananas, they are bananas! To each thier own but I prefer a bike that always has more to offer.
Loved the content! I have been waiting for months (6 to be precise) for my MXR here in the US. Looks like I will have to wait longer! Thanks for posting this video.
Amazing bike, great reviews, but my 2018 is paid for. I remember your first XR review, with the passenger. The reason I went shopping for a Sport Tourer. 👌 Thanks for the great channel.
Interesting. Years ago the Baron proclaimed the then S1000R was a giz machine, and so it was. Move forward 6 years and an extra roughly 40 hp and seems as sexy as a test tube. Has BMW lost some fun in the formula?
I really hope the existence of this bike encourage other brands to also make very high performance crossovers/adventures. Imagine a 1390 SA with the 190 hp SDR engine, a Versys H2 or a Tracer 10. Or even a Transalp 1000 with the Fireblade engine. Stuff like that would be rather nonsensical of course, but still very fun nonetheless. And as a bonus, it would also help in keeping the 1000 cc super sports alive.
@@BobJones20001well… I did some mid to long range sport touring on naked bikes for years. Couple of years ago went from Italy to the Pyrenees with a superduke with my gf and soft luggage. It’s nice and all but you realize how much it sucks as soon as you do the same stuff on a sport tourer with hard luggage. At the same time I think this M version is pure bullshit for rich boys.
So true with all of the BMW M bikes. I test rode the M1000r and just found it too good and boring at sensible speeds. Unbelievable when you are on it but not special enough at normal speeds. I ended buying a Streetfighter SP instead. Much more of an occasion.
I'm a bit surprised these launches don't allow you to setup ergos (pegs, levers) and the suspension before your ride, especially if being adjustable and fancy is a part of their charm. Mild panic is bang on to cold calling a 200+ hp bike on tight twisties
Chris, if you get the chance, see if you can get your hands on a Honda Transalp 750, I'm curious to see what you think. I'm pretty sure that bike is what the new 750 flat tracker is based off of. These bikes just remind me of what Jay Leno always says about both cars and bikes.. "It's FAR more fun to ride something slow at 10/10ths than it is to ride something stupidly fast at 3/10 or maybe 6/10ths." I've experienced this myself ripping a 1966 Toyota FJ40 with a 3 on the tree around the block.. It honestly was the most fun I've ever had in a car, the glasspack that all the internals were ate out by rats, the big 6 banger with the progressive Webber carb, the sound and those 31X11.50 tires on 12 inch wide rims that just gripped.. lap after lap ripping it up to red line and just barely being able to break the speed limit was absolutely hysterical and I was laughing my ass off to the point that I had to stop and dry my eyes before continuing.. I think the same can be said about riding older slower motorcycles like a classic Bonneville from the 60's/70's.. The sound and the feel of the bike make up for anything it lacks in utter speed.. not that it isn't still able to do the ton. :D
Great review! I have a S XR & that can still frighten me so I'm not sure where anyone would need one of these. You can't use that power on the road & if you are going on a track, get the RR. I'd like to have a ride on one but still not sure exactly what they are best for.
Strange isn't it ?? first thing I do when I get on my S1000XR is make sure it is in Dynamic Pro with everything off, and for me that is what interests me in this M1000XR , plus some extra punch to make it more exciting, the S1000XR never feels scary to me honestly, I scoffed at 28k tho......because the base model at 23k looks crap compared to my Gen1 in White/Blue M Sport colours honestly. Think I will wait for the first of the second hand ones to trickle into the market.
Thx Chris for this review, i was hoping you will do it. I decided to buy my first gen after watching you on it. I have same giggles as you every time i open the throttle. So thats what im looking for in the bike. And if i could i would upgrade in a heartbeat 💓
why would I buy it without hard luggage options like the standard XR has?! I would want to tour on it. Otherwise, there's just M1000R for exhillirating riding.
Nice honest review. For me personally, I don't see where this bike fits in. Its fast, very fast, all the toys and the carbon, but would I want to use this for touring, probably not, I'd rather stick with my Gen 2 XR to be fair. For balls out fast I'd rather have the M1000R. I just looked at the prices also on the Motorrad site. Specced up it was 29k lol. My 2022 XR fully loaded probably valued just now around 12k if I am lucky. 17k to change lol. These M bikes are for folk with a lot of money to throw around, and as I say, for me this MXR just doesn't fit in anywhere for me.
I just watched your, BMW R 1300 GS review and you said you got the demo from Vines Motorrad Guildford, I'm off there tomorrow for their 2024 launch to see their F 750 GS but mainly for their new F 800 GS and F 900 R. Vines are fantastic, I have an A2 licence and still puddle around with my Yamaha MT-125.
I heard KTM is bringing out a version of the 690 SMC-R with clip-ons, fairings, pannier racks and active suspenders. Can't wait. Oh, and the calipers will be orange!!! Lap timer is an optional extra but will only cost £50 a month unless you combine it with the heated seat which only adds an extra £1200 per month. Excellent bike. Excellent marketing. Can't wait!
@@jimboulter3615 Ah, gotcha. This is a totally different price bracket and totally different category though. I was being sarcastic. I don't know who NEEDS this model. Seems a bit silly
i was intimidated by my Gen 3 Busa when i first got it. It's still insane, but it's a lot more manageable now. Assuming this would be the same. Yes it's very existence is an insult to speed limits. But you can't knock it down for being too good. The bike is just as stable and easy to ride at 10mph as it is 160mph.
I've been thinking about an XR as possible swap in the future, had GS's for the last ten years .. I love the lazy power and the way they cover ground with ease, this XR just sounds a bit high maintenance in a riding sense, very much a sports bike, egging you on all the time... hmmmm
No that is applying a whole new layer of emotive language onto someone else's perspective. It takes time for someone to grow into a bike, which is why long term reviews matter more.
It’s like cooking a cracking lump of juicy steak in a microwave; it’s very hot and edible, but you know it could taste much better if it was cooked properly. Yet another uninspiring, clinical, soulless BMW. Sports tourer?, my arse.
I'm sorry but for that sort of money, there better be ohlins and brembo and not some anodized trinkets. Let's see the Multistrada Pikes Peak vs the M1000 XR comparison, street and track.
I swung by my local bm dealership yesterday where there were 4 of these bikes on the floor all with sold panels hanging off them so somebody’s buying them , I agree we don’t need them but progress is only made by pushing the boundaries
I have a 2017 s1000xr which is 165hp and obviously slightly heavier than this model and I've never wanted anything faster - it's mind bending at full throttle. Almost too much as you said, and mine is 35hp down and probably more than a few pounds up!
Great vid, thank you! Very cheeky sneak preview of a blue S1000XR 2024 at 3:39. BTW, the fast rider you were following was actually on a black 2024 S1000XR... Food for thought?

I'm sure that's great to ride in the sweeping bends of Andalucia, but would you really want to ride one all the way there? I'm just back from Tenerife and La Gomera where I was two-up on an NT1100 and that was adequate so as you said at the end if you're just riding briskly it looks the bollocks, but you probably couldn't be comfy on an autobahn and with "only" cruise control rather than ACC it'd get irritating. That plus the manual screen and the lack of luggage make it a lovely bend scratcher but not one to actually go touring on to get to those sorts of roads. And it's another six grand on the price of a fully-specced RT...
I remember back in the day, when the K1200S came out, which spawned BMW’s strategy to go for the younger rider. All the journalists were saying how perfect it was and how safe it was and they preferred something more involving. After an “off” which wrote off my first bike (an Aprilia RST 1000 Futura) but yielded £22k in compensation, I bought a brand new, fully-loaded (ha ha!) K1200S in night black. Why did I buy a bike the journalists loved? Simply because I want to be safe on a motorbike, as I’m not a track god, or a knee down on every roundabout nutter. I want to go fast, but I want to do it safely. BMW have always led in the safety department whilst others have followed (apart from now catching up with KTM’s rear and side radar). I won’t be getting an M1000XR for two main reasons, I have one wife and two balls (the way I like it) and I hate cleaning bikes so a chain will never entice me again. Beautiful bike, beautifully made and beautifully executed…..sort of like I’d be if I bought one as a Sunday bike.
Carbon wheels yeah I get the weight saving but how much lighter are the panels that are pretty light when plastic anyway is it really worth the price difference to have carbon panels
5:44 "Atomically quick" is now part of my vocabulary and i love it! 13:02 You mean the quickest way to go from (having the) A (license) to no license right? :P
BVG, what a legend, I'd really value your opinion! I've got an M1000XR on order and it looks like it comes on RS11. I won't be taking it on track at all so I assume the RS11s will be wasted on me. I do mainly very spirited weekend backlane scratching and one or two long tours around Europe each year. Can you recommend a good all-rounder that will suit both applications when the time comes to replace the RS11? I prefer Michelins but also don't mind Bridgestones. Doesn't look like Road 6 or T32 are available in a 200 rear so I guess I'm looking at either Power 6 or S23? How do they compare when it comes to dry grip, wet grip, and mileage? Which would you recommend overall? Many thanks!
@@Herby-99 I rented XR several times usually for a few days trips. I would say I liked it, but it lacked power for me. I much prefer either very torque LC8 motor on SuperDuke or anything in 200+ hp club. Was bummed about hard luggage initially as i do like the top case option mostly, but later i made my piece with soft luggage, at least for starters, and i am certain there will be options aftermarket or direct retrofit perhaps with standard xr parts. But agreed this was very controversial decision by bmw on this category bike and will cost them customers potentially.

@@Herby-99 nice. I owned and tracked extensively Panigale V4S and had a chance to ride SF V4S for a day and SF is 90% Panigale in feel IMO other than more comfortable riding position. The problem is probably the same as o. The s1000xr. There is a very real disconnect from the front end of the bike. Its very hard to trust the bike because it is doing things it should not be able to do in the position your in
All bikes on stilts are like that, they should be limited to 125hp IMO. Dangerous bikes that high hanging to other lanes in the corners even when they are 1m from the centre line.
I got a standard that's flashed and decat'ed and it's more than enough power for the road. I rarely get to explore the upper rev range in canyon carving scenarios. Also, most of the extra power on the M is above 12k. And you get added features like a rear rack/luggage system, center stand, and electronic preload adjustment on the standard.
@5 that's a good point. I was looking at the price of the TE S vs the Competition Pack M which is where I came up with the ten grand. But by the time you add the M pack to the TE it's over £21k anyway! So then it comes down to choosing the extra power or a centre stand and hard luggage.
a key question: how would you compare the power delivery of the M1000xr to that of the 2023 aprilia tuono factory. is it "alive" in the mid rev range or you need to go 8k+ to come to life?
Was going to ask what gear you'd recommend for another tall rider, then I noticed you've got the same kit on that ive got waiting in my basket, guess that answers that!
Was the guy in front at 14:47 also on M1000XR and did he have a top box on his bike? I see that there are no side panniers for it or pretty much any luggage option available. Is there any? Sport tourist motorcycle without the luggage option is just🤦♂️ Not used to drive with the rucksack anymore. Got used to the top box for city driving and up to 300 km trips.

Definitely think there should be an adventure class race series like the baggers in the states. Especially on the IOM.
this is an amazing review im bursting out in laughter many times, not many people can do that
Standard rad guard! So BMW actually did listen to you during the S1000R ride a couple of years ago🙂👍
"Mild panic with comfort and range" 😂😂
So, you need maximum power, 201 hp on incredibly twist roads ? Guess Marquez is out of a job then 😂
After many sports and naked ICEs, I currently ride a Livewire One, 0-60mph in three seconds.
I'd be interested in a review of the base M1000XR (non competition spec), I wonder if maybe the extra weigh of the non-carbon accesories might make the bike a bit liveable.
from bmw website: Dry weight: 465.1 lbs (211kg ) | Unladen weight, road ready, fully fueled: 492 lbs (223kg). with carbon wheels, 485 lbs (220kg).
"Do we need it?" 18:21 YES WE DO!
With that paint job it's a candidate for Get Your Rat Out - it even has blue anodised parts. It may be stupidly fast, but I'd rather have the V4S Multistrada - so much more refined and classy than Shell Suit Barry.
Like your words... It's proper - "Get your rat out, bike"
I like it. To me it is better than the white.
I would own one in a heartbeat! A+ video presentation Chris.
Great video. Thanks for the review. Love to see how it performs on track.
M for Mildpanic! I love it, great Video. Cheers from Vienna!
I've got an XR and I love it, will wait a bit ( its not even a year old yet) then defiantly upgrade to the M version
Interesting. Years ago the Baron proclaimed the then S1000R was a giz machine, and so it was. Move forward 6 years and an extra roughly 40 hp and seems as sexy as a test tube. Has BMW lost some fun in the formula?
Baron needs to resurrect that honorable badge. 😂
Yes. "Crossover". Be true to yourself leave this shit to the dentists and golfers.
This or a V4 multistrada rs? The Ducati is 7 ish grand cheaper too and perhaps a better engine configuration?
Insta360 footage looking great lads.
What did we learn today????
Well you learnt that your insta360 was money well spent.😀
Great review! I have a S XR & that can still frighten me so I'm not sure where anyone would need one of these. You can't use that power on the road & if you are going on a track, get the RR. I'd like to have a ride on one but still not sure exactly what they are best for.
Does it get as hot as hell? And are bar and seat vibes fine gone now. And the seat. Can you move freely
I have a triple black 2019 model, and i will stick to it, although it now has zlmost 100k kms on it
Thx Chris for this review, i was hoping you will do it.
I find the lack of hard luggage absolutely idiotic even for a rich boy toy like this bike
Can't wait!
This has sort of been done before with the 690 engine being put in the Vitpilen 701.
@@jimboulter3615 don't get your point. Ktm, husky and gasgas are the same company....
Well not sure what ur point is then? I’m saying that Husky who are linked to Ktm have already done a 690:with clip ons. It was called a vitpilen 701.
@@jimboulter3615 Ah, gotcha. This is a totally different price bracket and totally different category though. I was being sarcastic. I don't know who NEEDS this model. Seems a bit silly
Per month?
i was intimidated by my Gen 3 Busa when i first got it. It's still insane, but it's a lot more manageable now. Assuming this would be the same.
Yes it's very existence is an insult to speed limits. But you can't knock it down for being too good. The bike is just as stable and easy to ride at 10mph as it is 160mph.
Does it blow up?
I've been thinking about an XR as possible swap in the future, had GS's for the last ten years .. I love the lazy power and the way they cover ground with ease, this XR just sounds a bit high maintenance in a riding sense, very much a sports bike, egging you on all the time... hmmmm
Well done that my new favourite 44t video after you taking out the old tuono that day. Fantastic work
I think the words you were looking for, were, 'It's good, but it's got no soul'
Like Hollywood
Throw a cat delete header on there and install a proper flash and the bike becomes a proper demon. Spitting fire and all.
No that is applying a whole new layer of emotive language onto someone else's perspective.
It takes time for someone to grow into a bike, which is why long term reviews matter more.
All adventure bikes are the same. Good but boring. If something has a full fairing it should either be a tourer or a race bike.
PP rider here--thinking the Multistrada RS is the exact match.
"Mild Panic" Genius, I'm using that phrase , if you don't mind
Nice bike, but this XR, what about panniers?
Nice vid Chris! I am aching to replace my now long-gone 1st Gen S1000R with something that has a GS riding position and even more power! Looks proper mental!
Reminds me of the days when Ford fitted a DFV V8 engine into a Transit. How many categories do we actually need?
520lbs full of fluid with all that carbon seems a bit chunky.
So more M5 CS or X5M?
i believe, with carbon wheels, it weighs 485lbs fully fueled
@@damytzeus Chris said 223kg DRY WEIGHT, so, 223kg = 492lbs. Usually 25-30 lbs for all the fluids.

Saw one at McDonald’s last weekend. What a presence, looks mean even when stopped
Only had change for a McDonald’s after spending £27k 😂
Out in April?
'AI John Connor Terminator thing' Nice way of putting it Chris lol.
Well done, awesome review, please continue... Actually, very very well done...
Will wait until the Msport optional toaster is available. Digital ofcourse.
Having an 'M' lasered into bread powered by algorithmic science is worth every penny of the £3000. Carbon crumb catcher.
Great vid buddy, once again 👍🏼 they should make a GT group. Like gt cars. Very fast long distance luxury motoring. 👍🏼 you can use that 😉
Carbon wheels yeah I get the weight saving but how much lighter are the panels that are pretty light when plastic anyway is it really worth the price difference to have carbon panels
5:44 "Atomically quick" is now part of my vocabulary and i love it!
13:02 You mean the quickest way to go from (having the) A (license) to no license right? :P
5:48 - Very tactical that blurring out the display 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love it, I've had a deposit on one for 3 months already!
Same. Took a leap of faith on this one.
@@TheSuperpod loved my s1000xr so this can only be better. Bummed about no hard luggage though
@@TheSuperpod spot on! I've already been having a look and I think we will be able to retro fit S1000xr top box rack to it. Also agree about after market equipment.
I have a ducati streetfighter v4sp atm, I love the power but the suspension is spine shattering
@@Herby-99 nice. I owned and tracked extensively Panigale V4S and had a chance to ride SF V4S for a day and SF is 90% Panigale in feel IMO other than more comfortable riding position. Great bikes in their own right, but neither would be my choice for long distance. I was so waiting for KTM to update their dinosaur SDGT, but bmw beat them to it and I caved in. Lol
Enjoy your take on it Chris, very entertaining. Reckon you just as well get an S1000rr and get some wind/weather protection.
Hi chris what rst jacket you wearing cheers ed
The problem is probably the same as o. The s1000xr. There is a very real disconnect from the front end of the bike. Its very hard to trust the bike because it is doing things it should not be able to do in the position your in
All bikes on stilts are like that, they should be limited to 125hp IMO. Dangerous bikes that high hanging to other lanes in the corners even when they are 1m from the centre line.
I'd be interested to see this compared to the S1000XR. I'm genuinely very tempted by it, but I also can't see that M badge is worth £10k over the S.
It's not. M1000XR is £22.5k, actually not a great deal more than a top end S1000XR.
You don’t think CF wheels and 31 extra HP alone is worth ten grand?!
I tested the BMW M1000XR yesterday awesome bike.. But i am 5-9 i would like to lower it 2 inches or more do you know lowering options on this model ?
Won't the wheels shatter if you hit one of our UK potholes and make you fall off and hurt your shoulder?
The insta 360 does some nice shots! will be a great addition on the new P2T series!
So, is it quicker than the Piles Peak you took round silverstone?
More SuperMotoard than crossover / adventurer with sports bike front wheel. A Superbike for daily driving, commuting, touring.
It’s fast but Fugly 🤑
Deffo missing the panniers and top box with 200bhp lol
It gets a thumbs up for the Tennants Super joke.
What a bike!! Great review as always... Can't wait to get my hands on one.
Lots of performance, is it the best platform to put it in? Does that even matter? I guess not, for those why buy this.
Have 2016 S1000xr 30,000 miles bike does everything,enjoy riding
Was the guy in front at 14:47 also on M1000XR and did he have a top box on his bike?
I see that there are no side panniers for it or pretty much any luggage option available. Is there any?
Sport tourist motorcycle without the luggage option is just🤦♂️
Not used to drive with the rucksack anymore. Got used to the top box for city driving and up to 300 km trips.
S.D EVO OR M1000R/XR?? Can't decide which I want to get.
