The perfect road bike? 2024 BMW S1000XR review

- The BMW S1000XR's had a huge update for 2024, including more power, more standard kit and some supposed improvements to some of the old bike's weaker points. I've been living with one for a week, so join me for my final thoughts, a quick ride and a poke around all the new bits.

I love my 23XR. It's flashed and has aftermarket headers whixh transforms the bike completely. Its a proper animal now.
Nope the reviewers say the new one is way better and they are like gods of all expertise (NOT) I bet the difference is so minimal. 5hp? could easily be a simple lie. HB vibrations might simply be heavier bar ends I BET the new one is heavier "bigger battery" bit idk
While working at a bmw dealership, I test rode every single bike out there for several years while saving up and deciding what to buy. Settled for a used 2016 xr.
From carving the canyons in Southern California to cross country touring, it’s the perfect sport touring bike.
Great review. I've had 4 XR's and love them. The current one is 2 years old. Owned it from new done 28,000 miles, a lot of that with the wife on, she's 60 and I'm 66. We go on european tours and both find it brilliant. Ride it like a 600 and its very rewarding.
Duncan I am considering an S1000XR and would like to know what sort of reliability issues with the 4 you have owned?
@@donnyazoff980 I had major issues with an oil leak on my 3rd one., BMW and my local dealer sorted it out . They even gave me a huge discount on the one I have now as compensation. No problems with my current one after 28000 miles in 2 years. Fantastic bike. That said I think BMW have good and bad bikes. I've had courtesy bikes that have been shite. All I would say is buy one of there specials, like a triple black. The finish is better.
I own a 2021 XR and still love it, going on year 3 in August. Seat isn’t particularly comfortable but that’s about the only negative I can come up with. I usually ride at a moderate pace and easily get 210-220 miles on a full tank of fuel. Truly ticks all the boxes for me.
I have a XR gen 1 and still absolutely love it. Test rode the new gs1300 the other days and still preferred the XR.
How durable are the XR Motors once it's clocking high mileage without potential engine issues as it's a high reving motor?
Wow loved this review Tim!
Aww thanks hon! x
Very close to ordering one. Got a test ride booked next week.
Top video mate.❤
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the test ride
I’m really looking forward to your touring vids Tim. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thanks Matt, I do really appreciate your support. Can't bloody wait to get to the alps in a few weeks - this tour will be a bit more bikey than war-ry. And probably more pizza-ey.
@@timrodierides superb. It’s all good. I’m off to the picos in June, and I can’t wait for that.
Nice bs absent review as always Tim, love it.
high seat fixes sliding into tank
Fantastic review ♥♥♥ "Mein Hintern tut weh" or "Mein Popo schmerzt" 😂😂😂😂
The seat is fine, it's just not touring one, but sporty. You just need tank grips with anti - slide texture to hold it tight.
Great video! Would your MT10 accelerate quicker from stand still than the XR?
Looking forward to the history tours. Last years in the Vosges was great.
Great review 👍🏻. This or multistrada V4S ( lightly used for price parity maybe)
Added an XR to the garage this year alongside my 1250 GSA. Pretty much agree with everything you’ve said. If I’m crossing continents or anything off-road, I’d take the GS. But for everything else (including track use), the XR is the champ!
Nice review and nearly ordered- but went for Multistrada V4S - very happy with my choice 😊
Thank you! The Multi V4 is such an amazing bike too. Enjoy it when it comes and don't look at the fuel consumption (says the MT-10 owner)
Thanks for the video Tim. This is the bike that ended my MT10 adventure, and you are right its a near perfect all rounder. Took mine to france a couple months back and knew i had made the right decision within the first morning bombing down through the french twisties. Ride like a bell in mega comfort with plenty of luggage and still see 175+ miles range... witch craft.
Great to hear the truth about the “improved” seat. The gen 2 isn’t great either but after trying just about everything on the market the standard M seat plus a Cool Covers seat cover is surprisingly good enough for 3 hours for me, which is more than enough without a break. The annoying indicators can be slightly improved with Weiser Technik Wizards that plug straight in and turn off the rear light function when indicating. Having followed a GS with the same lights for a while they’re actually not as bad as they look. I could see the indicator quite clearly. Standard screen is terrible, MRA Vario with the extension gets rid of the buffeting. It’s personal preference but the XR always makes me feel special, it’s very tame and easy to ride in traffic in rain mode, but after 8k revs it’s ballistic. It’s a great bike but you need to like working the revs. Low end torque just isn’t there.
i like to have one of these bikes !!
if i have it , im getting lot of money after selling it !!!
Cheers from Greece man !
I had one, I found all the power was in the top of the rev range which meant that you were hitting 80mph before the power band kicked in. This made it a not so perfect bike for the road. Sold it and bought something with less BHP and more torque.
I had the K1200s and 170bhp , fancied a change , but didn’t want chain ( I’m lazy and enjoy the shaft ) … certainly didn’t need the power so whilst I looked at the XR I eventually chose the RS and for me it was the wisest choice
Very nice indeed albeit at that price I’d like a full front mudguard to keep all the crud and stones etc. from ruining/damaging the engine and rads etc. 👍
I have a 1250gs but was thinking of the 1300 -but this seems like it might be in the running -I do like low down torque -how does the S1000xr compare ?
What happened to the TE pack. Everything extra in one good value bundle.
Hey Tim, ol chap, I have not unsubscribed.i love BMW! Hope you still get fed!😎😉😊
Thank you Ben! No one’s unsubscribing, just unsubsidising!
@@timrodierides 😂 collected my 24 XR TE, 3 weeks ago, in black! Very naughty..love it.
The seat feels like sitting on flat board. I rode one of these and couldn’t imagine spending all day on it.
My only concern is the seat - will I be uncomfortable after 90 mins
Really pleased with your review mate, I've been waiting for this bike to come out for a long time. Would be very interested to hear your thoughts comparing it to the 1300 GS if you get the chance to ride it. Ride safe
Thanks! I'm trying to get a 1300GS in to test but I keep sleeping with the PR's girlfriend so keep getting put to the back of the queue ;)
@@timrodierides lol 😂
Great review!
I tested a month ago a Tracer 9 GT+, a 1300 GS and a S1000XR : all three the same day, from the same dealer.
Spent about 2 hours with each, including a little run with the wife behind.
Ended up ordering the XR (all packages, including the M as yours).
Please ask question if any 😊
Ah that's interesting! Mine was a press bike - I don't own it. Lots of people are comparing this and the Tracer… I'd find it hard to choose (power vs comfort for me)
My wife opinion:
- tracer is the less « pretty », and not as powerfull as the others. Confort was ok.
- GS is the most confortable, but seat heating is useless.
- XR is the most appealing, but the less confortable as a passenger. But as my previous bike was a Aprilia RSV4, the XR is still verrrry confortable 😂
For me :
- tracer was good. Great price/value. But for me you buy a bike cause you love it, not just like it…
- GS, did not enjoy the engine : sound, vibrations at low RPM…
- XR, loved all 😅
I almost chose the Tracer
It’s got a nice pull on the motorway but also it has everything you need cc heated grips , screen , it’s comfortable, fast fun 🎉it’s a brilliant bike
Agreed!
@@dannykhoury85 and if you want a 125cc scooter for in traffic at low speeds just use Rain mode it’s fantastic
Thought u might off mentioned the big ktm, maybe another run on the ktm 2c if u miss it 🤔 lol
Test rode one for a day, XR even now still has horrible hand numbing vibrations …why BMW can’t fix this is crazy.
Rode a 23 and then a 24 back to back. Bought the 24. Seat is a way better. I rode for hours with no discomfort. It does push you forward a little. But it was no big deal for me. The bike is awesome.
The power and handling is great. Overall a super fun “upright” sports bike. And much less money than a multistrada V4. Very happy with my choice. Nice review.
Thank you! Wishing you many happy miles and no speeding tickets together :)
Agree with comments about the seat, I was looking to buy one if they improved the seat but unfortunately, they didn't. Is it a tiny bit wider, yes, but painful to sit on for more than 10 minutes. Great bike, too bad
Must be absolutly terrifying riding on thoose narrow almost no through corners visabillity! 😮😮😮
That's 90% of country roads where I am - you just need to be able to stop in half the space you can see to be clear. Learned that the hard way 12 years ago coming around a corner to a combine harvester parked in the road... I stopped in time but only just.
Regarding the slippery seat it might be down to the riding jeans you wear. I had the same problem with my 2022 XR and swapped the standard seat for the supposedly non-slip M Sport seat. Still have the same problem but only when wearing jeans and not with other gear (textiles etc).
Anyway, great review with the usual dry humour. Also in my opinion the vibes are a non existent problem and short screens are always the way to go 👍
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah I was thinking I should've been riding with my textile trousers on because they have a grippy leather arse patch. But I don't slide around on many other bikes in my jeans...
Hey, I had the 2022 XR in grey with matching luggage. Personally I thought it was flat typical of an inline 4 so switched to another GSA which is actually faster off the mark and lots more grunt. Does look nice though, msport 👌
I agree. I feel they need a lower-power version of the 200hp shiftcam engine just to give you some more torque lower down
@@timrodierides The M1000 XR !!! Next review please Tim 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👊🏽
Great review as always.
How about showing off your linguistic skills on the Yamaha XSR 900 GP.
I've been promised a go on one :) In a month or so
@@timrodierides excellent. Looking forward to it
I get an annoying buzz in the footpegs at freeway speed.
As I understand, the navigation system on all BMWs with the TFT screen is to put it nicely, a challenge to use. Your thoughts?
I find it one of the easiest to use!
I enjoyed the video well done.
I'd be very disappointed to spend that much money and get that seat and those vibes. No such problems on my '98 VFR so I can't understand how BMW can get the little details like that so wrong
In your review of the previous bike you said GS was better? What's changed
Well spotted and thanks for calling me on it! I think it’s more a stage of my life thing - I’m enjoying inline 4 motors more than I used to!
This or MT10 SP as an all rounder including some solo touring?? Thanks Tim!
My son owns a Gen 1 XR, and I have a MT. I like the MT for its hoonability and mid range grunt, but the XR is way better for longer rides. And the GS is better again. Horses for courses!
I'd echo what Malcolm's said! I've not toured on my MT yet (will be doing so in a few weeks), but it's not going to be the most comfy bike. But I think the engine and grunt will make me love it once I'm in the alps.
Having said that, I should clarify mine isn’t a SP, so the very firm ride is tiring on a long backroads run so Tim yours will be better there. And I have a slightly higher screen etc, but that does not a touring bike make. But on a good smooth fast twist road, there’s nothing better as it’s way smaller and more nimble than the XR. I imagine you’ll love it in the alps!
I'm trying to decide between the basemodel tuono or this. the Tuono is far cheaper and was heading that way but after this video I'm not sure...
The Tuono motor is far more engaging, more powerful, faster and the Tuono handles better. Oh and it sounds the best. The XR is more comfy and roomy. I went for the Tuono and have never regretted it.
The thing that swayed me away from the XR? Is how many used one are for sale compared to certain other models you can hardly find one locally...is that a valid way to evaluate? admittedly not unless one knew how many are sold...but I dont see a crap load so I am just guessing they dont sell utra well given the price but what do i know
Maybe the reason you don't see many used XRs for sale is that their owners love them and don't want to part with them!
hey Tim, I lovescribed to you hahahahaha
Hahaha thanks love
How tall are you this bike looks small next to you 😯
I resubsidized ..I’m sorta wondering how or where you can use these bikes now ..I can’t see the enjoyment in these machines on public roads .. 2 gears and your done basically
You have to know some quiet roads and have a fairly sizeable risk appetite...
I have a gen2 Msport. If you’re a solo rider / tourer you need to at least try this beast. It’s so easy to ride easy and then there’s warp drive 😂 I’m 6’3 have an MRA screen on it and can ride at 70mph visor up and I have a little anti slip piece of rubber which I just set on the seat and put in my pocket when I get off. My riding has so improved since I got it and you don’t have to ride like an idiot to enjoy it.
With the same engine, same 17” wheels, and same equipment (heated dynamic cruise shift damping control pro fandango) coming as standard on a S1000R, why not just plump for one of them and bang a back box on it? The lack of a screen is probably a positive given your comments about the taller screens on the XR’s (which I also agree with), and you’d save yourself thousands of deutsche marks
Would you recommend the GSXS1000GX?
Hey! I've not ridden it yet, I'm a bit behind on my Suzukis at the moment...
Do we Even need the S1000R/XR any more? I would CRY if i was out riding my S and someone passer me on the M… 😅
I rode this bike today, the blue one. Amazing machine but the seat is a deal breaker it does push you into the tank. It's also very buzzy. If you touch the hand guards it's like touching a tuning fork. Great bike but hard to live with was a daily i think.
Also with the wunderlich comfort seat?
Normal seat@@gianni3774
Was it a 2024 model?
Yes, great bike but think it would be better on track or in Spain where they have better roads. I rode a Yamaha MT10 today and think it's s better road bike with more accessible power. I'm trying to ride as many bikes as i can to see what i like.@@habibi750
Love these bikes, but not sure I'd take it over the multi. Neither one appeals as much as the KTM GT, and with the 1390 GT spy shots looking like it is finally more attractive than the squished bugs after a long jaunt, I'm hopeful I'll have won the lottery by the time it's released so I can buy one. Great review as always.
Thank you! I always wanted to love the SDGT but it was always a bit too small for me for a touring bike. Which is odd, because I felt more comfortable on the naked SDR!
@@timrodieridesI am very surprised the SDR feels more roomy to you! Mind you, Lamb Chop is also a tall chap, and likes the SDR. 🤔
I test rode the GT last year and was happy with the comfort even though it's no GS, but I couldn't stomach the looks.
Seems a vlogger can’t post a vid of any bike without someone saying my gs is better
You rode the multi v4? If so this or that
Still stick to my gs1250 it’s more versatile
Take all my money please!! 😳
My bike there ☝️ it’s a brilliant bike like you said it’s sporty , it’s comfortable practical and you can put your vape in the cubbyhole! What more could you ask for? 👍🏾
When i sold my 2016 XR, which i absolutely loved, and bought a GSA1250 was only due to the new XRs terrible seat!
We like touring, so GSA it was.
I still miss the XR. I cannot understand how that seat was approved by the factory test riders, considering its a complaint from almost all XR rider's! Not sure if i will keep the GS, and do not like the styling of the GS1300. So, want XR performance and handling with a comfortable seat. Mmmm....
Really enjoy your humour!
Could you not just buy an aftermarket seat?
@Pccart1121 The first XR model seat was perfect. When I wanted to buy the new model, it had the terrible seat. I did not want to pay out an extra R6000 to get a custom seat which might not have made it that much more comfortable due to the seat area design. Love tge 24 XR it might tempt me if I can do a long seat test ride as we enjoy touring.
Ready to swop out your MT10?Cheers.
Not even remotely. Haven't done half the things I want to do on my MT yet (touring and trackdays!). I've had it 8 months but I'm still firmly in the honeymoon period. It's got under my skin like no bikes I've owned in a long time!
@@timrodierides Glad to hear.
@@timrodierides I prefer and went for the Tuono. Amazing engine and incredible handling. It still tops MCN's supernaked shootout's.
I sat on a couple of XR's & the seats were terrible. They push you forward into the tank & crushes your nuts. Terrible!
That's wot I said innit! It's odd no one at BMW notices during development
I am a BMW fan boy and had many of them but no more!! They really know how to take your eyes out when it comes to pricing!!!If they could charge you for wheels they would!
Sadly that's how they stay in business...
The wheels are included in the price! Unless you want carbon ……. I’d say go for carbon 😂🙌🏼👌🏽 . I’ve had and ridden loads of different bikes, I even tried the crazy Zh2 Kawasaki but I’ll be honest, I got back on my XR and it’s just better, it may not be as fun but (and I’m no expert) imo a bike has to be easy to ride and easy to live with day to day, the Zh2 is fun sure but it’s the little things like you have to press the cc button 500 times before it activates and by that time you’re already home ! I agree with you though they’re brilliant bikes 👍🏾
How is the zh2 power in a sport prospective and handeling twisty roads compare to the s1000xr? I am an owner of a 2023 h2 sx (more havier than the zh2 but same HP) and I am thinking of buying the s1000xr but I like more sportier rides from 0-130 mph and I am not sure the s1000xr can deliver what my h2 sx gives me. I know all the advantages of the xr for every day driving, but I am looking for the sportier ride. I will appreciate your answer 🙏
Great bike. Still, my 1290 SAS trounces it in every aspect that matters to me. Biased owner opinion. I don't get why would someone compare it to 1250 GS. Too different.
A SDGT will be close
You sir, are a tall person!
So I hear!
I've never liked the S1000xxr "bucket".seat. can't believe BMW get the seat wrong...😔
The 24 does not have the bucket seat, any more. It’s gone.
See that's what I was expecting Ben, but it felt just as buckety to me :( Your buttocks may vary! I've just bought my first mountain bike in 20 years and am rediscovering what proper seat pain is :D
@@timrodierides agreed my arse appears to be made of granite! But I’d did compare a 23 bike, the bucket edges have definitely reclined!
This bike or mt10?
Wanted to know the same
Best bike in that category is triumph tiger 1050 sport
Easily
Schmerz im Arsch! 😱. Looking forward to your tour videos 👍!
Danke! Me too... just got to make them haha
Sounds like a really good price... in a good way.🤣
Just get the TE.
£18k ish, M sport just gets you an iffy paint job and less comfy seat.
If only Cardiff bmw hadn't closed down 😭
Darling Timothy, your dinner is in the oven, don't forget this time please. Oh, btw, what's this bike for exactly, apart from a tool for SUV owners?
Crossed-up wheelies on corner exit and a rude inline 4 noise!
I'm gonna get this bike when I turn 40
That gives me 18 months to save up...
Get a F900XR with dynamic and dynamic pro riding modes. It shifts and tours 60mpg, save yourself thousands. I can confirm as I have owned 2021/22 S1000RR x2. Still have a 2022 S1000R.
Two different animals. Anemic boring parallel twin vs a screaming I4. I test road a F900XR last year at a dealer while my bike was being serviced and it's nowhere near as fun and engaging as my 1000XR.
I had an 900XR and it was bloody awful. Suspension was shit. Rear brake was non-existent. Handlebar vibration was awful, buffeting was awful, seat was like concrete.
If not boxer engine it’s not BMW
What a silly comment!
By the time you say the entire name it's already depreciated 20%.
Haha, true of many bikes though!
Every single bike /car depreciates 20 % the second it leaves the showroom that’s the VAT ! Ash
Just that little bit to big for me... shame.
They do a factory lowered version for you short arse fella's😂.
It's reasonably tall but feels OK once you're on it... depends on your inside leg (oo-er)
There is a low suspension model available.
@@ski3435 the problem with low suspension or low seat is that they don't really ride the same. I had a GSA for a good many years, standard height. Had no issues at all. This xr 1000 isn't too tall, its too big. It seems to be designed around some one that is 6 foot 3. The seating area, bar position, pegs etc, for some one my size (and i would put myself in the average categorie at 175cm) the bike is just too big. Feels like when you are a kid and you get on your dads mountain bike. Its just all wrong and you have no confidence on it. Sure, i can ride it, but it doesn't fit me..
I will get the new Hayabusa instead…
3:17 Like your mom. Lol
You got unsubsidized!!! Old people are hilarious 😂
Who let gramps near the internet?! (I wouldn't be brave enough to write this if I'd just reviewed a GS)
@@timrodierides 🤣🤣
Extreme Reinigungsmittel? Really ? That’s not exactly funny. Plump . And GT means gute Technik 😂
I wasn't trying to be funny, that's what it stands for
Engine made in china?
If you wear proper leather pants, you'll be fine on the seat.
Are you sure your trousers are not slippery on the inside?
Die Schmerzen im Arsch!
They're slippery on the outside too
Plastic tank for well over 20k
Looks shit, seat is still shit, I will stick with a much nice Ducati Panigale (yes know it’s not naked I like wind protection at 120 mph) and if you must have a really powerful naked try a V2 Streetfighter, even cheaper!
Hey Tim- I unsubsidized. Sick of BMW's. Good luck!
Unsubsidized?! Who will pay for my McDonald’s now?! Bye then
@@timrodierides😂haha brilliant 🤩 big mac meal incoming 😂😂👍🏾
It’s ugly
If it were the M, I'd say yeah, it's probably the top trump, but until that happens, the 1290SDGT is better. And when the 1390 drops....
