It's nearly always a behavioral problem. So many people spend money out of selfishness and vanity, trying to impress other people. People in developing countries don't realize that the US standard of living is mostly paid for by debt.
It's really is crazy what some people get themselves into. I freaked out when I had $3,000 in credit card debt. I can't even imagine the level of horror in having almost a million dollars in debt.
Same even 3k to me is unsustainable and needs to be addressed immediately… to let it go above and beyond the tens and hundreds, aside from unavoidable medical debt from living in the states. If you take hundreds of thousands in student debt you sure as hell shouldn’t also have 35k in car debt and over 100k in credit card
Yep. A potential spouse that won't talk about money? That should be a non-starter. Credit will allow you to delay facing money issues for a long time. But one day it WILL force its way in and make you face it.

As a 31 year old first generation American from Mexican parents who NEVER taught me anything about money, I discovered Dave a little too late and unfortunately do have debt, not as much as a lot of these callers, but I am in the right mindset, it’s not too late.

Years ago, I watched a YT channel called homeless firefighter which introduced me to this show. I followed his lead and moved into my truck bed with a camper shell. Graduated college and couldn’t fathom paying 2k in rent for an apt I was never at. 3.5 yrs later, I have no debt and 150k cash in the bank. Come from foster care so I’m used to having nothing. Separate your needs and wants and figure out what’s most important to you in the long run. For me, it’s buying a house cash out of state and working a low stress mediocre job to carry me through the rest of my years. It’s shocking to hear these stories because I can’t help but compare myself to other successful people around me and in CA there’s ALOT of them. That said, you never know what’s going on behind closed doors lol. I feel great about my situation any time I watch these videos. Thanks for sharing! Probably helps cure a lot of people stress anxiety and depression..
@@tbprofile1295 still in ca due to the labor rates. Once it comes time I’ll be looking at Colorado, Texas or Tennessee. My background is supply chain and warehouse, so I’ll likely look to be a warehouse lead in a factory or doing 3rd party quality control audits. Both fairly low impact on the body. How bout you? What do you got in the cards for yourself?

I live in the UK and started doing the baby steps at the start of 2024. I am now at the start of baby step 3 after saving £1000, paying off my credit card and selling my car. I am so thankful that I came across Dave’s videos as it has changed the trajectory of my financial future.
Regarding the first caller- I disagree with Dave about selling a $300k home to just get out $90k towards the debt. If they have a low mortgage rate, the monthly may contribute to income and with inflation it may make sense to hold that home.
I’m glad I paid 27k off of my student loans in 4 months by working and paying as much as I could on them. Now I’m debt free! Next step is a house! (Just turned 27)
I got about 7k in credit card and car loans and 8k in student loans . It’s not a lot but overwhelming still considering I’m not making stable income lmao. If I can find a stable job and income I can pay it off in a year or so. 😢
For the first caller, $230K for two people is good income, terrible income for their debt level. I remember this call and was a classic from the pre-pandemic days. Dave should do a follow up call on her, and I wonder if she is still married.
I've noticed a trend with ppl that have high income but even higher debt. It's like they focused their brain on making money, and have no common sense on how to keep it.
@@blaze376192also remember that a lot of these people do have advanced degrees and the like. So they go on to get all of those status-driven, higher income jobs that they can brag about on LinkedIn. But because they are adults with their own bills to pay and mouths to feed, they rely heavily on debt at a time when others work. Obviously these people are extreme, but I definitely know a fair amount of people who seem to spend their 30’s and 40’s paying for what their 20’s couldn’t afford to get.

@@roadrunner9622 why not? One of my best friends was really depressed and was out of work. He sat in his room on the computer for over a year. Half a million dollars was his revenue the next year. Lets just say he took performance enhancing drugs and built a web scraper which would gather and collate arbitrage opportunities. He also programmed freelance.

Same. Paid for house (only got for $65k in 2014) and old truck. A lot of help from my family. But we run a business together. I can save 30% or so of my income. Invest 25% of it, rest goes in high interest savings, bonds, treasury notes etc

I got a history degree...and a theology master's....I survived. Had to live like a monk. Got a job making $40,000k/year and paid it off in 3 years. So, even if you dig the hole and have a tiny shovel, you can fix it.

Also having people who teach history is important especially since humans keep making the same mistake over and over again. None of this is new since credit cards came to be. Going to college doesn't make you smart. And it doesn't have to be expensive. My entire tuition through 6.5 years of school was 4800 (4 years of JC) and 20K at Sac State. 24.8K in all. I had no debt, paid all upfront. (my parents paid half) and I was working through school. I got 2 degrees that immediately got me close to 6 figures.
I’m 90% through an engineering degree. $30k in student loans, $5k in medical debt, $800 in credit card debt…my goal is debt free 3 years after graduation.

I started watching Dave right after i bought a 20k truck in 2018, realized it was a terrible financial decision at the time. Since then I've doubled my income, married my wonderful wife and i pay off the truck next week.

100% agree My daughter left school at 16yo with no qualifications. She had a learning disability. I told her find a permanent full time job and you can leave. I’m not too clever either but a very hard worker and saver. My daughter is the same. Fast forward she’s now 33yo owns her own home and has already halved her mortgage through extra principal payments. She now is in a job with $85k a car and petrol for personal use. You do not need an arts degree. You need a work ethic, saving ethic and resilience and focus.
US readers might be impressed by 85k and you too as her parent and while it is above the NZ median, what was the cost of that income? You influenced your daughter to spend her 20s working on her income instead of finding a good man to have a family with. She's 33, let's say she finds the perfect man tomorrow, we want to wait maybe a year to have kids so she's knocking on 35 before her first child is born in the best-case scenario. In reality, the perfect man stands a good chance with a clever, attractive, homely 23-year-old who has >10 years of fertility in her. But hey, maybe after 3 billion years of evolution, this is the generation that chooses to end your genetic lineage. Also, if she has a mortgage she doesn't own her own home.
I work a 43k a year job and it frankly feels hopeless. $1000 a month for rent? I drive a reliable car. Don't waste money on fast food, don't waste money on crap but it still feels like an uphill battle.

I went to Nursing School at a community college while living at home. I paid for my education as i went. When i got out, (graduated) i was debt free. After I finished Nursing school we moved from Michigan to Texas and started working. I only had an Associate degree but made as much money as Bachelor Degree nurses, we worked side by side
Preach it brother, I’m 71, living on fixed income with a wife in the nursing home, live in a small house I own. I own 3vehicles all run good, no debt. My Toyota is 26, old carpet van 36, mazda 20 years old and they’re running good. I work on my own stuff. Automotive, carpentry, plumbing, AC, electrical, appliances, I’ve fixed them all, got abig garden too, givin food away. I laid a lot of carpet and vinyl back in the day. Hell, they had me in the cotton field at 5. We moved to town and I had two paper routes and worked at the grocery store on Saturday sackin groceries. Went in the Marines went overseas had a big time. I’ve built boats, mobile homes, commercial air conditioners and school buses, some long haul trucking. Mostly laid carpet till couldn’t. Took care of my wife last 10 years till couldn’t. She’s in good place and gets the best care, we’re on our 4th cancer, but we’re gonna beat this one too. Finally Speaking is I just don’t spend a lot of money. I’ve got money coming out my ears. I go looking for kinfolk to help. My final point I guess would be that you can’t out give God. I give to people on the side road, recently gave 500 to two sisters and a Thousand to my daughter I bless someone by helping fill their cup and right away God fills mine to overflowing. I would like to tell these folks to step out on faith and watch what God does.

@@montanax8127 bingo. food budget went from 2000 a month to 300 a month. that was the biggest change. i took the opportunity to eat healthier, cook for myself (vegetables though, not rice), and to stop drinking all together. and “NO DOOR DASH TONY” absolutely zero door dash, which was my biggest offender. i don’t eat out, so for most people it would be no eating out. and i don’t mean i did it every once in a while. i stopped it completely.
Yeah, It's still his show but like he said in an interview.... he wants to retire and if he died tomorrow he wouldn't want everything that was built to collapse because it was solely reliant on him if he died. So they have been transitioning him out. It's actually nice to see him being able to spend more time with his grand babies after working so hard and building an empire. 😊
Found Dave Ramsey after being laid-off. Followed the baby steps and 10 years later I’m taking care of my parents and chose to cut back on working. I could only do this because I had the sense to read, listen and do.

To anyone reading this: do NOT treat paypal like a bank account. They can steal your money. It happens all the time in the art community where artists have lare sums sitting in their account and PayPal flags their account and just takes it all away! And they refuse to give ir back, its just lost. So PSA, make sure you always transfer to a proper bank.
If flagged it doesn't "go away", when they freeze your account for a few months and then you can withdraw it all, but they may ban you from opening a Paypal account again. Also the freezing happens when they think you have violated their T&C, so if for example you are using your personal account to receive "friends and family" for recurrent commercial transactions, it will definitely be flagged and get your account closed. But they don't keep your money, you can withdraw it to your bank account
@@xantiom my own account that i've had for 10 years got hacked and they completely suspended it and sent me to collections over $40 and when I tried to present receipts and explain the situation they just said sorry can't help and terminated my account

I work for the federal govt and only have a Bachelors cuz that is all you need. So many ppl are under this false notion that just because one attend an elite school and do all this stuff makes one qualified for a government job. I work with people who gone to good schools but those individuals have super advanced degrees but not making enough to justify their "degrees "... i am so glad i only have a Bachelors and what i owe in student loans is pennies. Watching these episodes make me feel better as a whole. Refuse to keep up with the jones' and thankfully i paid my vehicle off years ago. Looking to get rid of my college loans this year. Very motivated because I want to call in and say I am debt free. Watching these videos are very motivational. Dave Ramsey is the GOAT and would be invited to the cookout 😎😎!!!
Yes, it all makes sense...... I did the same in my early 20's. Trying to show my parents I was better than my older brother who was on a financial pedestal in my parent's eyes.
Dave is right. My wife and I spent for a lifestyle to try to keep up with everyone around us mostly out of jealousy. All it did was get us into crushing debt. We got together and made radical changes. To this day when I pull up to a light in my 12 yr old rusty truck to a guy driving a brand new $80k truck I smile knowing he's probably broke and my wife and are are now debt free and millionaires now.
I drive a 20 year old truck! So many millionaires are cheap as hell. I knew of one who was living in a mobile home he was that cheap. Being cheap helped to become a millionaire. No need to be flashing. No worry’s about gold diggers. No one knows you have over a million.
Since a half year i called for help, because i could manage it any more. Now i make a lot of progres, i think i will be okay after 8 months from now. But then i a have no reserves its just debt free. But i will be happy! Now life is hard but i made the mess myself so i have to deal with it now. But i will make it. Love to be on the positive side in a year and make my some wealth.
Funny how I only discovered Dave's content after becoming independently wealthy! So much he says rings true. In my life previously I got into debt twice. I was obviously too young the first time because I needed to do it again to make me really scared. Debt is debilitating - the few weeks/months of joy are destroyed by years of clawing yourself out of a big hole. It just isn't worth it folks. Please be smart. I am an atheist so I can't get on board with the spiritual side of Dave's advice except to say there's something spiritual about living free of the weight of debt and tons of material objects surrounding you. "Doing poor people things" is so true - buying stuff that, if you had enough money in the bank to buy, you likely wouldn't. I was once told by someone who had bought an expensive car on credit when their disposable income was non existent that they were fed up living like poor people, figured they wouldn't ever get richer so to hell with it and piled on the debt. Lenders ruin lives - it shouldn't be allowed.

Took me 6months to get debt free listening to Dave Ramsey. As a single person with 40k debt took 6months. Cut my expenses in half! Now I save 50% of everything I make I wake up stress free never worry about money for the most part now.
Discovering this show from across the Atlantic. The financial situations of some of these people are mind boggling. I've been working for a decade, and my way of thinking has been the following: enjoy today, but NEVER spend more than you can afford/pay back in a reasonable timeframe. I've never had much money saved, but I've always kept the boat afloat. Because of this, I see myself as bad at managing finances. But seeing that some people are crippled with tens of thousands in debts, I may not be as bad as I thought.
My mom gave me some sage advice years ago; “Don’t worry about what others think about what your wearing, OR driving , because EVERYONE is too busy worrying about what people think of THEIR CLOTHES & THEIR CARS.. “

My brother is an accountant for the state and I'll never forget the time he showed me a bill that he had to "account" for. In late 2021, VA spent 2 million dollars on "covid awareness" Everyone was 1.5 years into a shutdown, but we really needed to spend 2 million to raise more awareness. Fortunately that governor is gone
my mantra for many years was save, save, save so I could travel, travel, travel then the family life began and so did poverty for the next 20 years now thats all gone out the back door, back to Sq One again.
Over the past two years I have been teaching kids financial literacy and an attitude to money similar to yours Dave, 'not caring what others think' and teaching them that 'stuff' will not bring happiness AND this is inner work and inner resilience. Through this, my tiktok channel reached 25 million young people in 2024 and I hope I have made a small dent in their understanding and had a positive impact on their futures. Nobody teaches this better than you do Dave and this show is absolutely brilliant. The format of real people phoning in and your panel of experts, including you, giving advice, is brilliant. This episode with your talk about soul work to this poor couple who are nearly a million pounds in debt is spot on. I am aware the show is already very large and I hope it continues to grow to reach more and more people. You are an inspiration Dave, to me and millions of others.
The older I get, the more grateful I am I never went into higher education "just because".. I didn't have a clear dream and wouĺd have ended up taking out loans and getting an education to please my parents.
I decided not to go to college before I graduated high school, I wanted to be an engineer but didn't know what kind, and so i became a mechanic right after graduating. It's been awesome and I'm so glad I don't have any student loan debt. Im not debt free, bc tools... But I'm in a lot better position than many of my peers, I'm sure.
As someone with a history degree who is now actively working on getting a librarian degree, and, of course, struggling financially, all I can say is that, don't do it. Study history only if your parents are loaded, you have a good relationship with them and you know they will support you, and you don't have to worry about money, or study history as your free time hobby. I don't live in the US and was lucky to study history for free, my government paid for it, but it's universal everywhere in the world - working in the field of history will not bring you money, it's a hobby.
You got a few options, but they are very limited compared to other degrees. Thats why I also decided to pursue a degree in engineering instead. Even though I loved history, and was very good at it.
@@YY-jv4uu idk about the original commenter but I AM australian, and while I haven't started paying back my HECS debt yet I would never say I got a free education. none of the students I went to uni with considered it to be free, either - we know it's taxpayer funded and we have to pay it back eventually or the system can't work.
Mr. Ramsey is absolutely right! I never understood the idea of attending an out-of-state college/university. I went to a local Community College after HS and then transferred to a State University to complete the other half of my BS program with zero debt.
My sister has a son who graduated highschool this past year, and she laughed when her son wanted some frivolous degree. She flipped out afterwards, but he realized her concern. Great kid, and I'm glad he's doing alright.
I so appreciate his approach when he asks if they are in a good church and to speak to the verse about contentment when materialism is so rampant and brings a spiritual aspect- because really, all things are scriptural.
My son got a degree in History. His dad helped him quite a bit, and so did I, and he worked full time through undergrad. He taught as a grad student and adjunct and worked as a grad assistant, AND got stipends.for grad school. Then he got his PhD in April 2020, right when college/university enrollment dropped 40% because of covid. He's doing well now, but what a nightmare! If he'd done a bunch of student loans he'd have drowned. Literally.

Growing up as my older siblings went off to college my father said get any degree you want as long as it has an "employable skill." At a young age I knew that term. We were so fortunate to be taught about earning and saving money. I feel sorry for so many of these callers.

On the positive side of this. I'm a retired truck driver with only social security as retirement. My wife also truck driver still driving the truck we own. She also gets her social security. While driving , we listen to Dave Ramsey. Together we wiped out ALL our debt! We truly own our home. Our only bills are utilities and insurance. For the last mouth repairs on truck, and bad cold have kept us from earning anything. Our only income this mouth was our Social Security. Sooo as I watch our accounts, it looks like we will have at least $500.00 left over at the end of the mouth. It will probability end up in savings, any wonder why we just paid cash for car and have at least a years income in the bank. This stuff really works, we lived like never before, really frugally, we just never stoped. That is, if you don't count the fancy toys I'm building, that would otherwise cost $100,000.00. Of course, their parts and materials are already bought.

@@harrytipton3996 haha at 38 now looking back now I had a LOT of learning and experience left yet to take in at 22. And at 55 I'm sure I'll say similar of my 38yo self (life willing). But I do recall having that 6+ years of work and real world (aka post school) experience in that 29yo range felt like a significant leap in my personal wisdom of the world we are a part of and an influence upon.

Watching today Monday the 1st July 2024, from JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA 🇿🇦. We parents here we pay for our children education. We pay monthly directly to college, university. We don't take loans or they don't go study, they go straight find a lower income pay. They mostly live with us even though they get a job. They pay us they consumable contribution. In other words they board from us once they start to work. My daughter she is 19 her 1st year psychology. I pay monthly over 10 months. My car fully paid. My 2 bedroom fully paid.
Students tend to borrow more than they need or choose expensive universities. Now some are just waiting for the government to pay off their loans. I am so glad I worked while attending a state college and was able to pay offmy small loan fairly quickly. Students need financial counseling before they borrow.
I work at one of the largest tech-colleges in the country. There are so many companies that need welders, nurses, aviation mechanics, etc, that our state government is willing to pay for high school student’s tuition if they take classes towards certifications in the trades. My entire job is to help students get certifications that can earn them $70,000+ COMPLETELY DEBT FREE. Parents, PLEASE educate your children about these jobs. You DO NOT need a 4 year degree to earn a living.

The fear of being broke gave me the momentum to get myself debt free in 2008.

Same even 3k to me is unsustainable and needs to be addressed immediately… to let it go above and beyond the tens and hundreds, aside from unavoidable medical debt from living in the states. If you take hundreds of thousands in student debt you sure as hell shouldn’t also have 35k in car debt and over 100k in credit card

It’s scary how many politicians can’t even manage their own finances.
Years ago, I watched a YT channel called homeless firefighter which introduced me to this show. I followed his lead and moved into my truck bed with a camper shell. Graduated college and couldn’t fathom paying 2k in rent for an apt I was never at. 3.5 yrs later, I have no debt and 150k cash in the bank. Come from foster care so I’m used to having nothing. Separate your needs and wants and figure out what’s most important to you in the long run. For me, it’s buying a house cash out of state and working a low stress mediocre job to carry me through the rest of my years. It’s shocking to hear these stories because I can’t help but compare myself to other successful people around me and in CA there’s ALOT of them. That said, you never know what’s going on behind closed doors lol. I feel great about my situation any time I watch these videos. Thanks for sharing! Probably helps cure a lot of people stress anxiety and depression..

@@tbprofile1295 still in ca due to the labor rates. Once it comes time I’ll be looking at Colorado, Texas or Tennessee. My background is supply chain and warehouse, so I’ll likely look to be a warehouse lead in a factory or doing 3rd party quality control audits. Both fairly low impact on the body.

I live in the UK and started doing the baby steps at the start of 2024. I am now at the start of baby step 3 after saving £1000, paying off my credit card and selling my car. I am so thankful that I came across Dave’s videos as it has changed the trajectory of my financial future.

Regarding the first caller- I disagree with Dave about selling a $300k home to just get out $90k towards the debt. If they have a low mortgage rate, the monthly may contribute to income and with inflation it may make sense to hold that home.

I got about 7k in credit card and car loans and 8k in student loans . It’s not a lot but overwhelming still considering I’m not making stable income lmao. If I can find a stable job and income I can pay it off in a year or so. 😢

For the first caller, $230K for two people is good income, terrible income for their debt level. I remember this call and was a classic from the pre-pandemic days. Dave should do a follow up call on her, and I wonder if she is still married.
I've noticed a trend with ppl that have high income but even higher debt. It's like they focused their brain on making money, and have no common sense on how to keep it.
@@blaze376192also remember that a lot of these people do have advanced degrees and the like. So they go on to get all of those status-driven, higher income jobs that they can brag about on LinkedIn. But because they are adults with their own bills to pay and mouths to feed, they rely heavily on debt at a time when others work.
Obviously these people are extreme, but I definitely know a fair amount of people who seem to spend their 30’s and 40’s paying for what their 20’s couldn’t afford to get.

@@roadrunner9622 why not? One of my best friends was really depressed and was out of work. He sat in his room on the computer for over a year. Half a million dollars was his revenue the next year. Lets just say he took performance enhancing drugs and built a web scraper which would gather and collate arbitrage opportunities. He also programmed freelance.

Same. Paid for house (only got for $65k in 2014) and old truck. A lot of help from my family. But we run a business together. I can save 30% or so of my income. Invest 25% of it, rest goes in high interest savings, bonds, treasury notes etc

I got a history degree...and a theology master's....I survived. Had to live like a monk. Got a job making $40,000k/year and paid it off in 3 years. So, even if you dig the hole and have a tiny shovel, you can fix it.

I always thought I'd missed out not going to college, but after hearing these horror stories about massive student loan debt I'm starting to feel kind of grateful. 😅
Going to college doesn't make you smart. And it doesn't have to be expensive. My entire tuition through 6.5 years of school was 4800 (4 years of JC) and 20K at Sac State. 24.8K in all. I had no debt, paid all upfront. (my parents paid half) and I was working through school. I got 2 degrees that immediately got me close to 6 figures.
I’m 90% through an engineering degree. $30k in student loans, $5k in medical debt, $800 in credit card debt…my goal is debt free 3 years after graduation.

My daughter left school at 16yo with no qualifications. She had a learning disability.
I told her find a permanent full time job and you can leave.
I’m not too clever either but a very hard worker and saver. My daughter is the same.
Fast forward she’s now 33yo owns her own home and has already halved her mortgage through extra principal payments.
She now is in a job with $85k a car and petrol for personal use. You do not need an arts degree. You need a work ethic, saving ethic and resilience and focus.
US readers might be impressed by 85k and you too as her parent and while it is above the NZ median, what was the cost of that income? You influenced your daughter to spend her 20s working on her income instead of finding a good man to have a family with.
She's 33, let's say she finds the perfect man tomorrow, we want to wait maybe a year to have kids so she's knocking on 35 before her first child is born in the best-case scenario. In reality, the perfect man stands a good chance with a clever, attractive, homely 23-year-old who has >10 years of fertility in her.
But hey, maybe after 3 billion years of evolution, this is the generation that chooses to end your genetic lineage.
Also, if she has a mortgage she doesn't own her own home.
I work a 43k a year job and it frankly feels hopeless. $1000 a month for rent? I drive a reliable car. Don't waste money on fast food, don't waste money on crap but it still feels like an uphill battle.

I went to Nursing School at a community college while living at home. I paid for my education as i went. When i got out, (graduated) i was debt free. After I finished Nursing school we moved from Michigan to Texas and started working. I only had an Associate degree but made as much money as Bachelor Degree nurses, we worked side by side

Preach it brother, I’m 71, living on fixed income with a wife in the nursing home, live in a small house I own. I own 3vehicles all run good, no debt. My Toyota is 26, old carpet van 36, mazda 20 years old and they’re running good. I work on my own stuff. Automotive, carpentry, plumbing, AC, electrical, appliances, I’ve fixed them all, got abig garden too, givin food away. I laid a lot of carpet and vinyl back in the day. Hell, they had me in the cotton field at 5. We moved to town and I had two paper routes and worked at the grocery store on Saturday sackin groceries. Went in the Marines went overseas had a big time. I’ve built boats, mobile homes, commercial air conditioners and school buses, some long haul trucking. Mostly laid carpet till couldn’t. Took care of my wife last 10 years till couldn’t. She’s in good place and gets the best care, we’re on our 4th cancer, but we’re gonna beat this one too. Finally Speaking is I just don’t spend a lot of money. I’ve got money coming out my ears. I go looking for kinfolk to help. My final point I guess would be that you can’t out give God. I give to people on the side road, recently gave 500 to two sisters and a Thousand to my daughter I bless someone by helping fill their cup and right away God fills mine to overflowing. I would like to tell these folks to step out on faith and watch what God does.

i took the opportunity to eat healthier, cook for myself (vegetables though, not rice), and to stop drinking all together. and “NO DOOR DASH TONY” absolutely zero door dash, which was my biggest offender. i don’t eat out, so for most people it would be no eating out. and i don’t mean i did it every once in a while. i stopped it completely.

To anyone reading this: do NOT treat paypal like a bank account. They can steal your money. It happens all the time in the art community where artists have lare sums sitting in their account and PayPal flags their account and just takes it all away! And they refuse to give ir back, its just lost. So PSA, make sure you always transfer to a proper bank.
If flagged it doesn't "go away", when they freeze your account for a few months and then you can withdraw it all, but they may ban you from opening a Paypal account again.
Also the freezing happens when they think you have violated their T&C, so if for example you are using your personal account to receive "friends and family" for recurrent commercial transactions, it will definitely be flagged and get your account closed.
But they don't keep your money, you can withdraw it to your bank account

I work for the federal govt and only have a Bachelors cuz that is all you need. So many ppl are under this false notion that just because one attend an elite school and do all this stuff makes one qualified for a government job. I work with people who gone to good schools but those individuals have super advanced degrees but not making enough to justify their "degrees "... i am so glad i only have a Bachelors and what i owe in student loans is pennies. Watching these episodes make me feel better as a whole. Refuse to keep up with the jones' and thankfully i paid my vehicle off years ago. Looking to get rid of my college loans this year. Dave is right. My wife and I spent for a lifestyle to try to keep up with everyone around us mostly out of jealousy. All it did was get us into crushing debt. We got together and made radical changes. To this day when I pull up to a light in my 12 yr old rusty truck to a guy driving a brand new $80k truck I smile knowing he's probably broke and my wife and are are now debt free and millionaires now.

I drive a 20 year old truck! So many millionaires are cheap as hell. I knew of one who was living in a mobile home he was that cheap. Being cheap helped to become a millionaire. No need to be flashing. No worry’s about gold diggers. No one knows you have over a million.

Since a half year i called for help, because i could manage it any more. Now i make a lot of progres, i think i will be okay after 8 months from now. But then i a have no reserves its just debt free. But i will be happy! Now life is hard but i made the mess myself so i have to deal with it now. But i will make it. Love to be on the positive side in a year and make my some wealth.
Funny how I only discovered Dave's content after becoming independently wealthy! So much he says rings true. In my life previously I got into debt twice. I was obviously too young the first time because I needed to do it again to make me really scared. Debt is debilitating - the few weeks/months of joy are destroyed by years of clawing yourself out of a big hole. It just isn't worth it folks. Please be smart.
I am an atheist so I can't get on board with the spiritual side of Dave's advice except to say there's something spiritual about living free of the weight of debt and tons of material objects surrounding you. "Doing poor people things" is so true - buying stuff that, if you had enough money in the bank to buy, you likely wouldn't. I was once told by someone who had bought an expensive car on credit when their disposable income was non existent that they were fed up living like poor people, figured they wouldn't ever get richer so to hell with it and piled on the debt. Lenders ruin lives - it shouldn't be allowed.

Took me 6months to get debt free listening to Dave Ramsey. As a single person with 40k debt took 6months. Cut my expenses in half! Now I save 50% of everything I make I wake up stress free never worry about money for the most part now.
I can proudly say I figured this out in college back in 2013. I left and never went back. Never been in debt. I also won’t touch a credit line.

I've been working for a decade, and my way of thinking has been the following: enjoy today, but NEVER spend more than you can afford/pay back in a reasonable timeframe. I've never had much money saved, but I've always kept the boat afloat. Because of this, I see myself as bad at managing finances.
But seeing that some people are crippled with tens of thousands in debts, I may not be as bad as I thought.
My mom gave me some sage advice years ago; “Don’t worry about what others think about what your wearing, OR driving , because EVERYONE is too busy worrying about what people think of THEIR CLOTHES & THEIR CARS.. “

My brother is an accountant for the state and I'll never forget the time he showed me a bill that he had to "account" for. In late 2021, VA spent 2 million dollars on "covid awareness" Everyone was 1.5 years into a shutdown, but we really needed to spend 2 million to raise more awareness.

Over the past two years I have been teaching kids financial literacy and an attitude to money similar to yours Dave, 'not caring what others think' and teaching them that 'stuff' will not bring happiness AND this is inner work and inner resilience. Through this, my tiktok channel reached 25 million young people in 2024 and I hope I have made a small dent in their understanding and had a positive impact on their futures. Nobody teaches this better than you do Dave and this show is absolutely brilliant. The format of real people phoning in and your panel of experts, including you, giving advice, is brilliant. This episode with your talk about soul work to this poor couple who are nearly a million pounds in debt is spot on. I am aware the show is already very large and I hope it continues to grow to reach more and more people. You are an inspiration Dave, to me and millions of others.
The older I get, the more grateful I am I never went into higher education "just because".. I didn't have a clear dream and wouĺd have ended up taking out loans and getting an education to please my parents.
I decided not to go to college before I graduated high school, I wanted to be an engineer but didn't know what kind, and so i became a mechanic right after graduating. It's been awesome and I'm so glad I don't have any student loan debt. Im not debt free, bc tools... But I'm in a lot better position than many of my peers, I'm sure.
Anytime I'm worried about my financial situation, I listen to these calls, and I realize I'm not doing that bad..
As someone with a history degree who is now actively working on getting a librarian degree, and, of course, struggling financially, all I can say is that, don't do it. Study history only if your parents are loaded, you have a good relationship with them and you know they will support you, and you don't have to worry about money, or study history as your free time hobby. I don't live in the US and was lucky to study history for free, my government paid for it, but it's universal everywhere in the world - working in the field of history will not bring you money, it's a hobby.
It may be true for you but not for others. There is money everywhere. Blessings.
You got a few options, but they are very limited compared to other degrees. Thats why I also decided to pursue a degree in engineering instead. Even though I loved history, and was very good at it.

@@YY-jv4uu idk about the original commenter but I AM australian, and while I haven't started paying back my HECS debt yet I would never say I got a free education. none of the students I went to uni with considered it to be free, either - we know it's taxpayer funded and we have to pay it back eventually or the system can't work.

Mr. Ramsey is absolutely right! I never understood the idea of attending an out-of-state college/university. I went to a local Community College after HS and then transferred to a State University to complete the other half of my BS program with zero debt.
My sister has a son who graduated highschool this past year, and she laughed when her son wanted some frivolous degree. She flipped out afterwards, but he realized her concern. Great kid, and I'm glad he's doing alright.
I so appreciate his approach when he asks if they are in a good church and to speak to the verse about contentment when materialism is so rampant and brings a spiritual aspect- because really, all things are scriptural.
My son got a degree in History. His dad helped him quite a bit, and so did I, and he worked full time through undergrad. He taught as a grad student and adjunct and worked as a grad assistant, AND got stipends.for grad school. Then he got his PhD in April 2020, right when college/university enrollment dropped 40% because of covid. He's doing well now, but what a nightmare! If he'd done a bunch of student loans he'd have drowned. Literally.

Growing up as my older siblings went off to college my father said get any degree you want as long as it has an "employable skill." At a young age I knew that term. We were so fortunate to be taught about earning and saving money. I feel sorry for so many of these callers.

I grew up poor, but I learned how to make a dollar last :-).
My daughter said I'm the most thrifty person she knows..lol. I've been completely debt free since 2008 and just paid cash for my retirement home in Colorado :-)

On the positive side of this. I'm a retired truck driver with only social security as retirement. My wife also truck driver still driving the truck we own. She also gets her social security. While driving , we listen to Dave Ramsey. Together we wiped out ALL our debt! We truly own our home. Our only bills are utilities and insurance. For the last mouth repairs on truck, and bad cold have kept us from earning anything. Our only income this mouth was our Social Security.
Sooo as I watch our accounts, it looks like we will have at least $500.00 left over at the end of the mouth. It will probability end up in savings, any wonder why we just paid cash for car and have at least a years income in the bank.
This stuff really works, we lived like never before, really frugally, we just never stoped. That is, if you don't count the fancy toys I'm building, that would otherwise cost $100,000.00. Of course, their parts and materials are already bought.

@@harrytipton3996 haha at 38 now looking back now I had a LOT of learning and experience left yet to take in at 22. And at 55 I'm sure I'll say similar of my 38yo self (life willing). But I do recall having that 6+ years of work and real world (aka post school) experience in that 29yo range felt like a significant leap in my personal wisdom of the world we are a part of and an influence upon.

Watching today Monday the 1st July 2024, from JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA 🇿🇦. We parents here we pay for our children education. We pay monthly directly to college, university. We don't take loans or they don't go study, they go straight find a lower income pay. They mostly live with us even though they get a job. They pay us they consumable contribution. In other words they board from us once they start to work. My daughter she is 19 her 1st year psychology. I pay monthly over 10 months. My car fully paid. My 2 bedroom fully paid.
College in the US is insanely expensive.
For no real reason because the quality of education has gone down hill..
And most people get ridiculous degrees here.
Trade schools are where it's at but not everyone thinks they're worthwhile.
Students tend to borrow more than they need or choose expensive universities. Now some are just waiting for the government to pay off their loans. I am so glad I worked while attending a state college and was able to pay offmy small loan fairly quickly. Students need financial counseling before they borrow.
I love that Dave cares enough to help you but not too much that he babies you, we need the truth and sometimes it hurts
I work at one of the largest tech-colleges in the country. There are so many companies that need welders, nurses, aviation mechanics, etc, that our state government is willing to pay for high school student’s tuition if they take classes towards certifications in the trades. My entire job is to help students get certifications that can earn them $70,000+ COMPLETELY DEBT FREE. Parents, PLEASE educate your children about these jobs. You DO NOT need a 4 year degree to earn a living.
