Jogging, it would be possible for a well trained woman her age. But I don't think that this woman had the time and place to be a trained runner + the big shoe prints.... I don't think that she was the murderer.
clearly you did not watch this properly, she was out of the home for a few hours, and as in most victorian era cases this matters, the rest is speculation, the technology etc did not exist, interesting she could not account for those hours whether she murdered mattie or not
It was strange that her father told the vagrant the noises, which the vagrant found alarming, were kids playing and nothing to concern himself with. Maybe Mr hackett, despite loving his daughter, couldn't afford an appendix operation and a wedding?
My best friend of 20 years just passed away. He was from Aroostook County and took me there several years ago. He never mentioned the case, and my first reaction on watching the video was to call him, only to realize he was gone. His name was Sawyer, and of course, was from an old logging family. They have a museum in Ashland, featuring a log bearing the Royal Arrow, marking that tree as reserved for use as a mast on a Royal Navy ship. To harvest the tree for any other purpose carried the death penalty. Having been in that part of Maine, it is easy to see how someone could flee from a crime scene in the vast timber lands that surround each town.

Poor Mattie ☹️ I don't think the wife did it though, as soon as I heard "8months pregnant" and having to have physically overcome Mattie in a struggle, I would be very sceptical of her being able to do that. This was a very intriguing video, and you narrated it so smoothly (as always!). Poor girl, not being able to get any justice for her murder. I do wonder if this man who asked for a room was involved asking for a room as a ruse having her alone inside the house while they were out in the barn.
I always feel for the loved ones left. It crosses my mind how they would never have gotten over it and I feel better thinking they are gone now, too, and can’t feel that heartache anymore. 💛 Thank you for doing these stories.
This one really got to me. My great-Aunt died at age 18*(1917) from her appendix erupting. Then the vagrant who just got out of prison, why didn't they check to see if someone else was let out at the same time? The statement, " Dirty nasty thing", to me implies someone doing or showing her something disgusting. Especially for that time period. Was an autopsy void? Would they mot want it known if Matty was abused? Also, my great-grandmothers name, was Mattie. ❤
It doesn't sound like enough time elapsed for that, and the narration didn't indicate that any of her clothes were off when the family found her there in the ditch. But that remark in response to someone exposing himself to her -that's feasible.
There are a lot of questions in this case. There is also the method of killing - strangulation with a cord is not most murderers' go to method. That suggests sexual overtones, and/or someone with some history to my mind. I have to say I am curious as to whether or not she was pregnant. She could be pregnant and have appendicitis. Indeed, I am curious as to what the autopsy results showed and didn't show. Based on the story we have heard, she doesn't jump out to me as a likely murder victim. She appears to have been popular, she doesn't appear to have been promiscuous or in the habit of mixing with a bad crowd.
Sometimes having an appendix taken out was a euphemism for having an abortion. Is there any possibility that this was the case in this story@@resourcedragon
Absolutely! I thought they would find the monster who killed Miss Hackett its terrible. My Grandmother's name, my Father's Mother's name was Mattie.I first thought it was a nickname but it was her given name. I've always admired the name.
The mystery surrounding how and why she was down the road whilst she was preparing food for Mr. Johnson is quite puzzling. According to everything written about her, she was a proper lady, one that wouldn't just leave the house without telling her father. Also, how ballsy does one have to be to strangle a girl so close to her home and then not get caught? They must've snapped her neck quickly with a lot of force applied to strangle her in such a short time. RIP Mattie. you You're not forgotten... 🥀

My personal theory is that it was a two person job. I think Mr. Johnson was intentionally distracting her father; which is why when he heard a noise Johnson was quick to tell him it was just kids. Whoever killed her, did so because they knew Johnson was distracting the father. This was likely a robber or kidnapping gone wrong , where someone attempted to sneak in and steal something while Johnson had the dad occupied, which would also explain why Johnson asked for food; that would keep Matti occupied in the kitchen. Something went wrong and she was killed after catching the accomplice in the act or they attempted to take Matti but she put up a better fight than expected and in an attempt to keep her quiet the assailant accidentally or intentional killed her.
Her dad already told her to start cooking for a passerby in need of shelter, I bet the second person came to the door introduced himself, and told her to come along with him to her father, while her father was distracted by the first man. If she was already in hospitality-mode, and thought her father had given him the ok, she might have been polite enough to follow.
The most disturbing part of this case to me is that her dad carried her home, and her mom tried to revive her, and they only noticed the garrote when it was too late. 😢 . I think this was a crime of opportunity committed by a man, and it certainly was sexually motivated. Such a shame they heard her screams too late. Ugh it’s so awful
It sounds like the case against Mrs. Raymond came down to rumor, speculation, and gossip. The actual facts - the timeline, the footprints, the fact that she was heavily pregnant - do not support her guilt. The only "suspicious" aspects could have originated in the minds of those convinced of her guilt. I can just imagine the prosecutor thinking, "Oh, everybody knows pregnant women are crazy!" and that's all he needed. In the mean time, were the police so fixated on Mrs. Raymond that they overlooked clues to other suspects?
Yeah, crazy women and their craaazy hormones! Guilty! Sigh. So frustrating. I do find it a little odd that the dad ran to the house to check if she was there first, rather than just running to the screaming person. Like, would he not have run to the scream if his daughter was safe?

@michellevasquez2131 When a cord is pulled tight around the neck, it can embed and disappear, especially if it's thin, pulled tight done with force. Who knows, maybe her head could've been down, or her hair could've been in the way as they desperately tried to save her life. The collar of a blouse she may have worn could've covered parts of her neck as well. Such a sad story and a shame no one was held accountable.

Plus the difference today and back then are the rumors.. when you live in a small town rumors will spread like a wild flower regardless of the rumors are true or not 9 times out of 10 people believe them.. There is No evidence that anyone hated anyone. How about justice for the wrongly accused, if indeed she was? You are making judgements with No evidence whatsoever, other than rumour, gossip and hearsay. That is making You rather like the very person you claim to despise. None of it makes sense, but logic would suggest that a heavily pregnant woman would not be capable of getting a cord around a woman's neck with the force that would embed it into her neck so that it wasn't noticed. By the way she was 21, Mattie was 17. Hardly a 'grown woman attacking a child' I am far more interested in the vagrant. How convenient that he appeared just before the murder and where was he while all this was unfolding? Surely he would have accompanied the father? Lets not forget that the wife was an 'incomer' It was a shambles and a mess of rumour, small town gossip, spite and lies. It almost certainly was Not the accused woman.
I really dislike that whoever did it was never brought to justice. This girl was just helping out in the kitchen while mom and the kids went to visit and dad to the barn. How did she get lured out and go down the road? Who wanted to talk to her and why. Who then murdered her. We will never know and that is just so sad. Mattie deserved better.
Murders often don’t make sense. However, in Mrs. Raymond’s case walking 2 miles in only 20 minutes while more than 8 months pregnant seems rather unlikely, especially since she wore size 4.5 shoes and the footprints at the murder scene were size 7. In many cases, officials try to fit the evidence to the suspect that they have in mind rather than having the evidence lead to a suspect.
@@phaedrapage4217 When younger and physically fit, I was a fast walker and my pace was 11-12 minutes/mile. These women on farms might be used to physical work but they didn’t have the better footwear, special fabrics and clothing that wasn’t conducive to moving freely back then. Try walking in a floor length skirt, heavier fabric on uneven hilly terrain and even when I was pregnant, couldn’t keep the same pace especially in latter stages of pregnancy. I do agree though that rage can certainly motivate people.
I just can’t imagine a heavily pregnant woman strangling Matty. I do think it was someone she knew and felt comfortable enough to walk about the yard with him.
I dare say Elsie being 8-months pregnant can be considered evidence she did _not_ kill3d poor Mattie -- pregnancy that advanced is already taxing on women doing normal daily tasks and chores, let alone str*ngling someone (which is the opposite of ordinary and also requires quite a deal of strength). There's little to no way Elsie could've committed the crime in her condition.

Wow, you really had me on the edge of my seat with this one! I was afraid they'd convict her. It feels to me like one of those cases where they think up a good story and then try to prove it, without considering all possibilities. Heaps of reasonable doubt and nothing in the way of evidence. Hi BC, another interesting case thanks. I have heard some weak cases brought to court but this one takes the biscuit, it should never have made it to court, insufficient evidence doesn't begin to describe it.
Interesting that they honestly believe that someone that pregnant could not only walk that but then be able to have the strength to apply the necessary pressure
Pregnany is different for everyone. I look liked I had swallowed a bouncy ball and could hardly walk and was exhausted as I threw up the entire time. My cousin looked like she had just eaten a big dinner and was active as usual and in shape to do whatever.

I get where you’re coming from but they honestly think someone who is literally due any day and “usually” as big as a house can’t even see her toes let alone touch them not only walk on really rough terrain but she would be able to not even get the person close enough to get her arms or whatever around the person let alone have the strength to kill the person
hearing this case as someone from Maine was interesting, my mom when I was young worked at the Kennebec county jail where she met my stepdad... I found the old pictures fascinating, I also feel for the lady to have passed so young
Another possibility is if the vagrant went to the home to ask about sleeping in the barn. The other vagrants were standing outside, on the lookout for when they could go in and rob the home when the family was away. Perhaps they didn't know Mattie was in the home and they chased her down the road, only to kill her.
But they didn’t see a struggle in the house. She would’ve been screaming and yelling to where her father would’ve heard her. I definitely think Mrs Raymond was the culprit. Doesn’t matter if she was pregnant or not, a woman scorned is a dangerous thing.
I cannot imagine how a heavily pregnant woman would have walked quickly to the farm, managed to overcome and strangle a fit healthy teenage girl, and escape on foot. It makes no sense. Not does it make sense her husband could have been present and not stopped the attack. What if Mr Raymond had hired the horse earlier in the evening intending to visit Mattie and maybe persuade her to ride out with him. She saw him at the gate and went to speak to him and told him to go away and perhaps threatened to tell his wife. It was her voice her dad heard, shouting at someone. Raymond would not have wanted her father to hear about any improper conversation and maybe wanted to silence her. Then he got away on his horse before help arrived. I think this is more plausible than blaming Elsie. Thank you BC for another story that needed to be told.
If someone was watching the house and knocked on the door,Mattie could have answered thinking it was their “guest” coming in from the barn. Likewise if she had left to get her father and was taken on her way.

And your method of research and presenting the cases is PERFECT. Wonderful voice for telling stories, the pictures are just right for the period of time, not like other channels who may use modern pictures with an old story which for me, is mentally confusing as I watch and listen. You put so much effort into your presentations and I want you to know they're appreciated as you present them! Regarding poor Mattie, it is heartbreaking that she was murdered and her murderer was never brought to justice here, but I can assure you they have everlasting justice in the afterlife. That is the only consolation in cases like these that go unsolved. I'm not sure the heavily pregnant Mrs. could have the strength to walk 2 miles in 20 minutes and also the strength to overpower and strangle Mattie in such a way the cord would imbed in her neck. It seems more like the work of a man, and that she was saying you nasty thing because the man put his hands on her to molest her. Even touching a woman and forceably kissing her back then was considered nasty. I'm truly of the mind that Mattie was a wonderful, hard working, generous young woman who was taken advantage of when her father was distracted by the "vagrant". I suspect there was someone else around, and Mattie was assaulted and strangled by that person. It is sad that her life was so shortened. She seemed like a perfectly lovely person. In the past (and, in many countries, even today) women did heavy farm work even in the late stages of pregnancy, so it is not entirely impossible Elsie had enough strength to walk two miles and kill Mattie. That being said, her guilt was far from proven, and somebody else could have murdered the poor girl. The one thing I don't buy is that she could be lured out of the house by someone she didn't know, like a random vagrant.
First of all it sickens me that pregnancy could be used as excuse for (insanity)? Second, just like the story from last week, people turn to violence for solutions. Whoever killed poor Mattie seemed just to want to kill her, out of anger or whatever. I don't know - when I got angry at my co-worker this morning I grabbed a rag and window cleaner and cleaned all of the windows in the hotel lobby. I mean, pregnancy DOES alter your personality - it's a large part of why I don't ever want to BE pregnant - it also makes you incredibly emotional, due to incredible amounts of hormones changing rapidly...so yeah, I could see a bout of rage, but not an 8 month pregnant woman wrestling a young girl and garroting her, lol. Some people it alters slightly, some it alters a lot. I think it's ridiculous they thought this pregnant woman got 2 miles in 20 minutes, lmao!

I can see you really felt this mysterious crime: the 2 miles in 20 minutes walk seems conclusive for the innocence of Elsie, though...just a mystery all round.
From the outset, I suspected that this "Alfred Johnson" was up to no good, and before the screaming and noise were even described, I suspected that he'd been planted at the scene to lure the family away. His inconsistent statements don't help improve my opinion, either. Having said that, I acknowledge that Mrs. Raymond leaves a bad impression . . . as does her husband. But I also grant the lack of concrete evidence and the real problems with the pregnant wife having physically done such a thing herself. And I have to say that when there's equal amounts of vague suspicion being cast at several likely suspects (or two, in this case), there's a realistic chance that neither is guilty. So, only my suspicion of Johnson the Lure really holds firm, and I'm not sure who he was working with . . . or for. After all, there seems to be a lot that we don't know here.
So so very tragic. There was NO reason Mattie should have had her life taken. I truly feel, that Elsie was the murderer, it just makes sense, and if she wasn't, then the vagrant had to have had a "partner in crime". The guy who asked for hospitality was almost certainly involved imo (the timing was just too perfect for it to be all a mere coincidence)....I'd even dare to guess that what landed him in prison wasn't probably vagrancy -- but rather something else way darker.
The timing was really, really suspicious, but it's hard to imagine Mattie being lured out of the house by some random man she had never seen before. Of course, the vagrant man could have been bribed by someone to distract Mattie's father, and was then too scared or ashamed to admit it when questioned.

And let's not forget the guy who asked for hospitality gave different candy conflicting testimonies during the trial to Elsie -- which he wouldn't have needed to had he been innocent or coerced.
I don’t believe for one hot second an 8 month, heavily pregnant woman, no matter how mad, went to eliminate someone. It’s a good thing the ex-con was literally talking to the victim’s father in the barn or he would’ve certainly been arrested for murder if he’d just been hanging around. Elsie might have been angry, but if she wore a size 4.5 shoe, she couldn't have been a very large woman. Garrotting someone takes a fair bit more strength than pregnancy cray-cray will lend one.

When women are eight months pregnant they can barely get out of a chairs and walk properly. It was far-fetched to accuse her, it was probably someone else. edit: Sorry, I realize some women can move just fine even late in pregnancy. But I'm still unconvinced. Even if she wasn't pregnant, the timeline still doesn't work. There were large footprints where the murder took place. They had more witnesses to the confession of murder than they did of seeing Elsie (and most of those were sightings were vague and inconsistent) While it's still possible, to me her advanced pregnancy just makes it even less likely she was involved.
@yerabbit6 Women back in the day didn't gain as much weight as women today do. They gained very little weight so being 8 months pregnant wouldn't have an effect on her. Also, women back then worked hard, out in the fields, the farms and chopped wood. They did just as much work pregnant than they did when they weren't pregnant. I don't buy the excuse that she incapable to commit a murder because of her pregnancy. If someone wants you dead, nothing will stand in their way. Such a tragedy that no one was held accountable. Mattie seemed like a gem. Her poor family that tried desperately to save her life.
@@mcmd2009 Actually you're totally right, I'm just going by personal experience. I had serious mobility issues late in my pregnancy. But it's pretty common to be at least a bit slowed down late in pregnancy, if only from exhaustion. (Though again, some women have no trouble) However I still think there still wasn't enough evidence to go to trial. 2 miles in twenty minutes is a lot, even if she wasn't pregnant, it doesn't add up.
I am so glad I was never beautiful, you stand less chance of reaching old age. This poor girl was at home not far from where her father stood and still the perpetrator got away with it. What a shame. Thank you. Hope you had a wonderful holiday.😊
I don’t think Mrs Hobbs- Raymond had anything to do with Hattie’s death I think it was someone connected to Mr Johnson maybe he had some men rob the house while he distracted the father. I can imagine they waited in the road till they saw the family leave and had thought only the father was at home that Hattie was home because of her operation was a surprise 😢 poor girl she sounded really nice and her poor fiancé that must have been a shock for him too 🤦🏼♀️😪

Well Not sure what to write on this one. Again i am very surprised how we in this era, reading these old true stories and watching these true crimes, really shock me because they seamed and look so pure and doing the right things. However, it is revealed how wrong we are to believe that they (the women) in those eras were so Prestine and pure. totally opposite. If Mattie was in trouble and afraid, should have told her father because he would have protected her. Also the Father should have never let a stranger in the house especially if he has a past criminal records. i have no idea who killed Mattie. Only God knows. Great job Briefcase. You are awesome. I didn’t know I was pregnant. I tried to kill myself. I took a lot of drugs and was in a coma for 3 days. Yes I already suffered from depression, anxiety and was suicidal as well. I also continued to have these conditions after the birth. I eventually found medication that worked for me, it took 20 years. But with the medication I am no longer suicidal or depressed. I remember when I was 8 months pregnant, 1st, my feet was so swollen i couldn't wear close shoes ( flip flops was my best friend lol) 2nd I was so uncomfortable ,tiered all the time. going to the bathroom every other min. I know that every women is different , I just don't know.

I'm very confused how she was strangled while her father heard the commotion. It takes several minutes to strangle someone to death.

My best friend of 20 years just passed away. He was from Aroostook County and took me there several years ago. He never mentioned the case, and my first reaction on watching the video was to call him, only to realize he was gone. His name was Sawyer, and of course, was from an old logging family. They have a museum in Ashland, featuring a log bearing the Royal Arrow, marking that tree as reserved for use as a mast on a Royal Navy ship. To harvest the tree for any other purpose carried the death penalty. Having been in that part of Maine, it is easy to see how someone could flee from a crime scene in the vast timber lands that surround each town.

This one really got to me. My great-Aunt died at age 18*(1917) from her appendix erupting. Then the vagrant who just got out of prison, why didn't they check to see if someone else was let out at the same time? The statement, " Dirty nasty thing", to me implies someone doing or showing her something disgusting. Especially for that time period. Was an autopsy void? Would they mot want it known if Matty was abused? Also, my great-grandmothers name, was Mattie. ❤
It doesn't sound like enough time elapsed for that, and the narration didn't indicate that any of her clothes were off when the family found her there in the ditch. But that remark in response to someone exposing himself to her -that's feasible.
There are a lot of questions in this case. There is also the method of killing - strangulation with a cord is not most murderers' go to method. That suggests sexual overtones, and/or someone with some history to my mind.
I have to say I am curious as to whether or not she was pregnant. She could be pregnant and have appendicitis. Indeed, I am curious as to what the autopsy results showed and didn't show. Based on the story we have heard, she doesn't jump out to me as a likely murder victim. She appears to have been popular, she doesn't appear to have been promiscuous or in the habit of mixing with a bad crowd.
Sometimes having an appendix taken out was a euphemism for having an abortion. Is there any possibility that this was the case in this story@@resourcedragon
Absolutely! I thought they would find the monster who killed Miss Hackett its terrible. My Grandmother's name, my Father's Mother's name was Mattie.I first thought it was a nickname but it was her given name. I've always admired the name.
The mystery surrounding how and why she was down the road whilst she was preparing food for Mr. Johnson is quite puzzling. According to everything written about her, she was a proper lady, one that wouldn't just leave the house without telling her father. Also, how ballsy does one have to be to strangle a girl so close to her home and then not get caught? They must've snapped her neck quickly with a lot of force applied to strangle her in such a short time.

My personal theory is that it was a two person job. I think Mr. Johnson was intentionally distracting her father; which is why when he heard a noise Johnson was quick to tell him it was just kids. Whoever killed her, did so because they knew Johnson was distracting the father. This was likely a robber or kidnapping gone wrong , where someone attempted to sneak in and steal something while Johnson had the dad occupied, which would also explain why Johnson asked for food; that would keep Matti occupied in the kitchen. Something went wrong and she was killed after catching the accomplice in the act or they attempted to take Matti but she put up a better fight than expected and in an attempt to keep her quiet the assailant accidentally or intentional killed her.
Her dad already told her to start cooking for a passerby in need of shelter, I bet the second person came to the door introduced himself, and told her to come along with him to her father, while her father was distracted by the first man. If she was already in hospitality-mode, and thought her father had given him the ok, she might have been polite enough to follow.

The most disturbing part of this case to me is that her dad carried her home, and her mom tried to revive her, and they only noticed the garrote when it was too late. 😢 . I think this was a crime of opportunity committed by a man, and it certainly was sexually motivated. Such a shame they heard her screams too late. Ugh it’s so awful
It sounds like the case against Mrs. Raymond came down to rumor, speculation, and gossip. The actual facts - the timeline, the footprints, the fact that she was heavily pregnant - do not support her guilt. The only "suspicious" aspects could have originated in the minds of those convinced of her guilt. I can just imagine the prosecutor thinking, "Oh, everybody knows pregnant women are crazy!" and that's all he needed. In the mean time, were the police so fixated on Mrs. Raymond that they overlooked clues to other suspects?

I do find it a little odd that the dad ran to the house to check if she was there first, rather than just running to the screaming person. Like, would he not have run to the scream if his daughter was safe?

When a cord is pulled tight around the neck, it can embed and disappear, especially if it's thin, pulled tight done with force.
Who knows, maybe her head could've been down, or her hair could've been in the way as they desperately tried to save her life. The collar of a blouse she may have worn could've covered parts of her neck as well.
Such a sad story and a shame no one was held accountable.

@@Lisa-hc3uq yes you're absolutely right, the cord could have been obscured by a high collar on her dress and it must have been really embedded into her neck, since her father couldn't remove it. It's unfortunate that her murderer got away with what they did.

It’s horrible that there is no justice for Mattie. The way people are jealous of each other, astounds me up to this day. I can’t believe the hate that a grown woman had toward a child. Plus the difference today and back then are the rumors.. when you live in a small town rumors will spread like a wild flower regardless of the rumors are true or not 9 times out of 10 people believe them.. I can’t say much of that has changed.
This poor beautiful child did not deserve to die like this, either behind someone’s jealousy, or any type of situation, and I wish that there was justice for her . Once again, thank you for another outstanding storyline and have a wonderful week.

I really dislike that whoever did it was never brought to justice. This girl was just helping out in the kitchen while mom and the kids went to visit and dad to the barn.

I find it hard to believe an eight month pregnant woman could murder a young woman. It doesn't make sense at all.
Murders often don’t make sense. However, in Mrs. Raymond’s case walking 2 miles in only 20 minutes while more than 8 months pregnant seems rather unlikely, especially since she wore size 4.5 shoes and the footprints at the murder scene were size 7. In many cases, officials try to fit the evidence to the suspect that they have in mind rather than having the evidence lead to a suspect.

@@phaedrapage4217 When younger and physically fit, I was a fast walker and my pace was 11-12 minutes/mile. These women on farms might be used to physical work but they didn’t have the better footwear, special fabrics and clothing that wasn’t conducive to moving freely back then. Try walking in a floor length skirt, heavier fabric on uneven hilly terrain and even when I was pregnant, couldn’t keep the same pace especially in latter stages of pregnancy. I do agree though that rage can certainly motivate people.
There was no clear evidence against her so a not guilty verdict was the right outcome regarding the circumstances

I do think it was someone she knew and felt comfortable enough to walk about the yard with him.
I dare say Elsie being 8-months pregnant can be considered evidence she did _not_ kill3d poor Mattie -- pregnancy that advanced is already taxing on women doing normal daily tasks and chores, let alone str*ngling someone (which is the opposite of ordinary and also requires quite a deal of strength). There's little to no way Elsie could've committed the crime in her condition.
A coonfounding case, many suspects, no hard evidence, a poor dead girl and her bereaved family. As Brief Case says, a mystery destined to endure throughout the ages. Great story telling, gripping tale. Thank you.

Hi BC, another interesting case thanks. I have heard some weak cases brought to court but this one takes the biscuit, it should never have made it to court, insufficient evidence doesn't begin to describe it.
Interesting that they honestly believe that someone that pregnant could not only walk that but then be able to have the strength to apply the necessary pressure
Pregnany is different for everyone. I look liked I had swallowed a bouncy ball and could hardly walk and was exhausted as I threw up the entire time.
My cousin looked like she had just eaten a big dinner and was active as usual and in shape to do whatever.

hearing this case as someone from Maine was interesting, my mom when I was young worked at the Kennebec county jail where she met my stepdad... I found the old pictures fascinating, I also feel for the lady to have passed so young
Another possibility is if the vagrant went to the home to ask about sleeping in the barn. The other vagrants were standing outside, on the lookout for when they could go in and rob the home when the family was away. Perhaps they didn't know Mattie was in the home and they chased her down the road, only to kill her.
But they didn’t see a struggle in the house. She would’ve been screaming and yelling to where her father would’ve heard her. I definitely think Mrs Raymond was the culprit. Doesn’t matter if she was pregnant or not, a woman scorned is a dangerous thing.

I cannot imagine how a heavily pregnant woman would have walked quickly to the farm, managed to overcome and strangle a fit healthy teenage girl, and escape on foot. It makes no sense. Not does it make sense her husband could have been present and not stopped the attack.
What if Mr Raymond had hired the horse earlier in the evening intending to visit Mattie and maybe persuade her to ride out with him. She saw him at the gate and went to speak to him and told him to go away and perhaps threatened to tell his wife. It was her voice her dad heard, shouting at someone. Raymond would not have wanted her father to hear about any improper conversation and maybe wanted to silence her. Then he got away on his horse before help arrived.
I think this is more plausible than blaming Elsie.

And your method of research and presenting the cases is PERFECT. Wonderful voice for telling stories, the pictures are just right for the period of time, not like other channels who may use modern pictures with an old story which for me, is mentally confusing as I watch and listen. You put so much effort into your presentations and I want you to know they're appreciated as you present them!
Regarding poor Mattie, it is heartbreaking that she was murdered and her murderer was never brought to justice here, but I can assure you they have everlasting justice in the afterlife. That is the only consolation in cases like these that go unsolved. I'm not sure the heavily pregnant Mrs. could have the strength to walk 2 miles in 20 minutes and also the strength to overpower and strangle Mattie in such a way the cord would imbed in her neck. It seems more like the work of a man, and that she was saying you nasty thing because the man put his hands on her to molest her. Even touching a woman and forceably kissing her back then was considered nasty. I'm truly of the mind that Mattie was a wonderful, hard working, generous young woman who was taken advantage of when her father was distracted by the "vagrant". I suspect there was someone else around, and Mattie was assaulted and strangled by that person. It is sad that her life was so shortened. She seemed like a perfectly lovely person.

I never heard about this case and I am from Presque Isle, Maine. Caribou is not too far from where I live. To lose your own child to something a stupid reason is so sad, not get justice is worse. Thank you for covering something from my state .

Such a horribly long time with no resolution. The unsolved murders are often the most heartbreaking. Neither justice for the victim nor answers for the surviving family members. RIP Miss Mattie.

In the past (and, in many countries, even today) women did heavy farm work even in the late stages of pregnancy, so it is not entirely impossible Elsie had enough strength to walk two miles and kill Mattie. That being said, her guilt was far from proven, and somebody else could have murdered the poor girl. The one thing I don't buy is that she could be lured out of the house by someone she didn't know, like a random vagrant.
Her average velocity would have to be 6 miles per hour. That's running.
I can imagine possibilities. A stranger could say, “There’s an injured child in the road! Please help!” I think that would probably do it.
Maybe she was running from him. .Or maybe she had been told to go there with the food. We only have Daddy and Johnson's version of events, remember.
The shoe prints were of way different size than hers, though.
First of all it sickens me that pregnancy could be used as excuse for (insanity)? Second, just like the story from last week, people turn to violence for solutions. Whoever killed poor Mattie seemed just to want to kill her, out of anger or whatever. I don't know - when I got angry at my co-worker this morning I grabbed a rag and window cleaner and cleaned all of the windows in the hotel lobby. I mean, pregnancy DOES alter your personality - it's a large part of why I don't ever want to BE pregnant - it also makes you incredibly emotional, due to incredible amounts of hormones changing rapidly...so yeah, I could see a bout of rage, but not an 8 month pregnant woman wrestling a young girl and garroting her, lol. Some people it alters slightly, some it alters a lot. I think it's ridiculous they thought this pregnant woman got 2 miles in 20 minutes, lmao!

From the outset, I suspected that this "Alfred Johnson" was up to no good, and before the screaming and noise were even described, I suspected that he'd been planted at the scene to lure the family away. His inconsistent statements don't help improve my opinion, either.
Having said that, I acknowledge that Mrs. Raymond leaves a bad impression . . . as does her husband. But I also grant the lack of concrete evidence and the real problems with the pregnant wife having physically done such a thing herself. And I have to say that when there's equal amounts of vague suspicion being cast at several likely suspects (or two, in this case), there's a realistic chance that neither is guilty. So, only my suspicion of Johnson the Lure really holds firm, and I'm not sure who he was working with . . . or for. After all, there seems to be a lot that we don't know here.
Your approach to these videos is on a level that others should try to achieve. Thumbs Up folks!

So so very tragic. There was NO reason Mattie should have had her life taken. I truly feel, that Elsie was the murderer, it just makes sense, and if she wasn't, then the vagrant had to have had a "partner in crime". The timing was really, really suspicious, but it's hard to imagine Mattie being lured out of the house by some random man she had never seen before. Of course, the vagrant man could have been bribed by someone to distract Mattie's father, and was then too scared or ashamed to admit it when questioned.
@@PaleMagnolia She didn't need to be lured out, a couple or few men could've simply taken her out the house by force ("you dirty nasty thing", or such?, being an expletive caused by her attempts at stopping them). And let's not forget the guy who asked for hospitality gave different candy conflicting testimonies during the trial to Elsie -- which he wouldn't have needed to had he been innocent or coerced.

edit: Sorry, I realize some women can move just fine even late in pregnancy. But I'm still unconvinced.
Even if she wasn't pregnant, the timeline still doesn't work. There were large footprints where the murder took place. They had more witnesses to the confession of murder than they did of seeing Elsie (and most of those were sightings were vague and inconsistent) While it's still possible, to me her advanced pregnancy just makes it even less likely she was involved.

Women back in the day didn't gain as much weight as women today do.
They gained very little weight so being 8 months pregnant wouldn't have an effect on her.
Also, women back then worked hard, out in the fields, the farms and chopped wood. They did just as much work pregnant than they did when they weren't pregnant.
I don't buy the excuse that she incapable to commit a murder because of her pregnancy. If someone wants you dead, nothing will stand in their way.

@@mcmd2009 Actually you're totally right, I'm just going by personal experience. I had serious mobility issues late in my pregnancy. But it's pretty common to be at least a bit slowed down late in pregnancy, if only from exhaustion. (Though again, some women have no trouble)
However I still think there still wasn't enough evidence to go to trial. 2 miles in twenty minutes is a lot, even if she wasn't pregnant, it doesn't add up.

I don’t think Mrs Hobbs- Raymond had anything to do with Hattie’s death I think it was someone connected to Mr Johnson maybe he had some men rob the house while he distracted the father. I can imagine they waited in the road till they saw the family leave and had thought only the father was at home that Hattie was home because of her operation was a surprise 😢 poor girl she sounded really nice and her poor fiancé that must have been a shock for him too 🤦🏼♀️😪
That doesn't explain why she left the house and why she said Oh you nasty thing!

Well Not sure what to write on this one. Again i am very surprised how we in this era, reading these old true stories and watching these true crimes, really shock me because they seamed and look so pure and doing the right things. However, it is revealed how wrong we are to believe that they (the women) in those eras were so Prestine and pure. totally opposite. If Mattie was in trouble and afraid, should have told her father because he would have protected her. Also the Father should have never let a stranger in the house especially if he has a past criminal records. i have no idea who killed Mattie. Only God knows. Great job Briefcase. You are awesome. It doesn't stop. It just gets worse in a different way lol
I didn’t know I was pregnant. I tried to kill myself. I took a lot of drugs and was in a coma for 3 days. Yes I already suffered from depression, anxiety and was suicidal as well. I also continued to have these conditions after the birth. I eventually found medication that worked for me, it took 20 years. But with the medication I am no longer suicidal or depressed. thank you for telling Mattie's story, I for 1 am having a hard time believing that a 8 month pregnant women walked 2 miles did the crime and walked back in 20 min. I remember when I was 8 months pregnant, 1st, my feet was so swollen i couldn't wear close shoes ( flip flops was my best friend lol) 2nd I was so uncomfortable ,tiered all the time. going to the bathroom every other min. I know that every women is different , I just don't know.
