Brief Case, these videos are brilliant each week! The script is well written and the photos help illustrate the time period. Truly, well done. You always make my Mondays brighter.
Hey BC. I wanted to thank you for your awesome work. I’ve had the worst two weeks ever. My big brother took his own life June 25th and it’s been a lot of pain and sadness. Creators like you have given me a somewhat of a reprieve from my grief. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
He probably did do it but the defence lawyer was able to show reasonable doubt in the prosecutions case. I wonder what happened to her "husband"? It must've been heartbreaking to lose the love of his life but also to find out she was still a working girl behind his back. I hope he ended up having a nice life.
Why no one looked at the mother. She didn’t want her son to marry a prostitute. She murdered her, went back outside and acted like she couldn’t get in.
That is a good theory. Though they did say she had been murdered between 3-4 am that morning and the mom was not there till later. Still who knows how accurate they were back then when trying to determine a time of death. The mom would've probably had blood on her clothing unless she had brought a change of clothes with her. They definitely should have looked into that possibility more from the start.
If the m-inlaw had done it she presumably would have blood all over her clothes. Unless she was able to change etc. Also it would have been easy to check her train ticket etc. I think it was one of the sailors or someone to whom she'd infected with syphilis. The accused didn't look like a throat slasher, more a strangler
@@NikkiC777The mom and the landlady could have been in on it together. The mom arriving earlier than was thought, stay with landlady. Then she goes, commits the murder, returns to landlady's to discard her bloody clothes and change into clean clothes. Landlady possibly didn't like the Emily using her flat for a brothel.
It always seems to me that a lawyer who has to belittle the victim to get a not guilty verdict for his client knows his client is actually guilty. That, and his insincerity on the stand, makes me think he got away with murder. There are several others who could've done it, but I still think he's the most likely one.
He got away with it. He was well connected and from a good” family. She wasn’t. I cringed at the cheers from the crowd after the trial when there was so much hypocrisy and class consciousness involved. Thank you for a fascinating episode.
Always a treat to have a new episode from you BC. Interesting, if also unsettling, how the trials of accused murderers often end this way when the victim has a checkered past or belongs to a " lower class" or ethnic group. Whether or not she chose the wrong path for her life, she certainly still deserved justice.
Prostitutes were and still are very vulnerable to violence from their clients, some drunk, some mentally ill, some with strange sexual ambitions. Also vulnerable in those days was anyone who appeared to be out of the ordinary, lived unconventional lives, acted oddly etc, and there were numerous cases where this was seen as making them likely to commit crime. So its understandable that given society's prejudices of the time the Police would add 2 and 2 together and make 5.
Yup. These attitudes still exist. I BET if the victims of the Green River Killer were teachers instead of prostitutes, the killer would have been caught earlier.
We need better laws surrounding sex work, especially decriminalization. Sex workers are not seen as people worthy of justice by police. It’s frustrating.
Till this day they still are in America anyway especially the street walkers, Cops even laugh and get annoyed when they have a case of a street walker getting, killed and I know this first hand, one I was a sex addict for over 20 years and saw hundreds of prostitutes usually high class call girls but a stroll was only a two exists from my old place on the highway and I use to hear tons of stories. Also my best friend since childhood is a NYC Cop for about 18 years and He was told me as well. Most cops get more annoyed with paper work then they murder case when a sex worker is involved especially if she's on drugs which most are
How sad that a poor woman would never get justice when a higher rank man was involved. Yes she was a prostitute, but a human being and maybe when they got married she could have stopped adding to the income. My mother was born in poverty . Their was my grandparents, 2 sons, 3 daughters and the lodger in 2 rooms and my grandmother cooked every day for her father. My grandfather worked on the railway and my grandmother had to take in laundry to make ends meet. My mother exited herself up with her hard working ethic. Poor Emily only did the only thing she knew to make money and that branded her as a lesser human. Thank you so much for the hard work you put in to bring these cases to light 👵👋🏴
Lol it was not just women involved in sex work, there was a law that women would be mandatorily put to death if found guilty of killing their husband, not for the murder itself but because she was considered a “subordinate” of her husband. A literal second class citizen. It’s crazy to me women don’t understand that the dehumanization of sex workers is pure misogyny.
Wonderful day for a brief case! I think he did it, but I also think it couldn't be proven beyond doubt. I'm glad that judges are no longer allowed to tell juries which way to vote! That picture of Ruby is fantastic, her expression is so vivid, you can really get a feel for her personality.
Hi B.C. I feel so bad for her. Because of what she used to do or still did, no one seemed to care. I think because of that, they let him walk. I so love you and it really is such a joy to come here. Thank you for all you do for us and until the next brief case❤
Well researched case, once again. Getting away with murder does not free one from guilt. Society had and still has many of these characters, unfortunately starting out in London with little resources is the beginning of life on the wrong side of the tracks. Great work B. C.
Sometimes I try to only listen to your presentations as I do chores....never works. The beauty of your visual research is absolutely remarkable. Thank you, again, for increasing the quality of my nights.

I literally have to start my Mondays with Briefcase or my day does not go well at all lol. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the channel, I appreciate you!
You know what's sad about such cases? It's that not a lot has changed since then... I see so many women who are victims of crimes committed against them, being judged as if THEY were the criminals! It's always "justified" with the clothes they were wearing, their non submissive behaviour... It's complicated to be a woman. Only we know. Thank you Brief Case for bringing these old crimes and giving these people some voice! I've lived 5 years in B'ham and now that I'm back to Brazil I watch your videos every week and enjoy the story telling and British accent, which I miss! Cheers from Rio de Janeiro 🌻💋
What a great way to wake up, I was grumpy because I'd woken up at 5am then I saw a new case from brief case in an instant I was happy to have woken up. Thank you for all of your great research and videos ❤
Another fascinating story, well told and in detail. We know so much from it but still cannot identify a culprit with certainty. This one will remain a mystery forever. Thank you Brief Case.
Because of her “profession” she (and women in general) were always responsible for their own deaths! Men were never considered responsible for much of anything at that time even though they were also responsible for some women having to go into that profession in the first place!
Agree. Also women need to stop shaming women about reproduction. Especially their daughters. .... it would also be nice if they'd stop coddling their sons, but now we're just dreaming of utopia
Of course the woman was blamed for her own murder. I do think it was Mr. Wood. But yes, it could've been one of her clients. In particular the very shady dude with a knife; especially if syphilis was involved. Thanks BC for narrating another interesting case.
She should have stayed at home and leave that dirty and dangerous life she was lucky that she found herself a man who loved her in spite of her past but she didn't , it cost her her life a pity that so young a girl died in such a grisly way

Definitely, a prostitute is always so much worse than the man who pays for her services, always has been and always will be!

This is exactly where I landed. He probably did it but that doesn't always mean it can be proven in court.
