I think they benefitted from the size of the population. People interacted and knew about each other. People could be identified but hands, jewelry, clothing, boots….literally everything. Even at this later date things weren’t mass produced enough to inhibit identifying clothing from a specific shop

What a senseless and cowardice act to murder a woman just because she was with child. I'm sure back in that time as we often hear that unwed pregnancies weren't socially acceptable, but to murder a young woman AND her baby to cover it up? Sadly, two people were murdered that evening- Pearl and her baby. 😢
    I pray she's at peace.

So tragic. Poor Pearl. 😢 I tend to lean with the theory that Pearl was murdered and decapitated where she was found because the Coroner had said about the amount of blood in that location. As for those who visited the site to collect blood stained grass etc. including the shop owner which sold them, their actions were so abhorrent. 😤

For some reason people have always been fascinated with the macabre. They did the same thing at a lot of other murder scenes. They took raisins off a cake made by the daughter at a scene where the father killed his entire family except for one child that wasn’t home at the time.

Why would William introduce Pearl to Scott knowing that Scott wasn't very "honorable"? Also, why didn't he tell her parents where she actually was (when she didn't return)? I have to wonder if he was more than an accessory to what had happened.

Such a very sad case of a 23 year old young woman who was killed at such a young age. Mr. Jackson was not a man of good morals I guess and because she became pregnant he didn’t want to marry her and decided to kill her that’s what it seems. Taking her head was just really barbaric and brutal and to this day not being able to find it is really sad.
The things that people would do to get out of a marriage or not be a father during that time was horrific. Also the fact that she was pregnant makes it even worse she had a living and breathing child in her and he killed her in a way that I can’t even imagine. Knowing what she went through as he was killing her breaks my heart ♥️

There are "cads" everywhere and every century. I'd like to think we as females are getting wiser, but these things still happen. And I know it all goes both ways - schemers and innocents on both sides. The sun has come up and it's a beautiful morning and soon I will be taking the ferry home to Whidbey Island for my weekend. A bit off-topic, but I do wish people would get over the tendency to assume that youngest siblings are 'doted on' (1:15). This might be the case in some families, but it's not a universal law. Quite the contrary, many youngests have a hard time growing up at the bottom of the family hierarchy, not to mention the indignity of being called 'the baby' all their lives, even if they live to 100. Rant over.

The days when shoes were specific enough to be traced to the owner.
While times were simpler they also had their tribulations.
Women became pregnant more often then mentioned even then. It is just a shame it was stigma or death.
In reality. Things have not changed all that much. Only the outcome .
I feel for both the girl and her child.

Pearls memory still lives on. In Wilder, a town a couple miles from where the corpse was found, there is a country western night club called Bobby Mackeys. For decades it was the site of notorious roadhouses. Pearls head is believed by some to be on the property, perhaps thrown down an old well in the cellar. She is also believed by some to have been murdered by satanists. I never knew the real story behind her death, its now become folklore. Thanks for this story. Excellent research. Must have been a lot of hard work.
