  • Today, we're going to make fabric boxes. They can be made in almost no time and used for so many different things! The ones I show you the measurements for will hold approximately 30 fat quarters, or stacks of charm packs. You could use them to hold fabric scraps or smaller pieces... the sky is the limit!
    Used in the video:
    Lining: Two pieces measuring 8" x 12.5"
    Interfacing measuring 7.75" x 12.25"
    Two pieces measuring 8" x 12.5" Interfacing measuring 7.75" x 12.25"
    Fusible Fleece (or cotton batting) measuring 7.75" x 12.25"
    *NOTE * For the smaller, square boxes, I used 7" x 8" pieces with a 1.75" square cut out and then an 8" x 9" with a 1.75" piece cut out.
    The interfacing/fusibles I used and showed in the video:
    Fusible Fleece Pellon 987f
    Heat N Bond Non-Woven Extra Firm
    SF (Shape Flex) 101
    Cotton Batting

    Jean truelove has a set of larger nesting baskets, for larger items, you might like them too. I had an idea to add a clear pocket on the side. You can put in a label about contents, or a pattern or project picture, laminate first if a photo or photocopy so it won't stick to the vinyl. You can use them as project bags, to Keep everything to finish a project all together You can put an inside pocket divided or not to hold tools upright in one for notions, needles, bobbins, markers, rotary cutter small ruier, Jack the seam ripper, scissors or snips etc. I made a 12" per side sewing bag with a high top and draw cords. Made a couple of small square ones to fit inside with the notions one, the smallest around, so the pieces go in, with boxes on top, fold up the top of largest bag and draw cord, and pick up handles. Some quilters are talking about scrap management, you could make 5" squares from your scraps and store in the size you just made, if there are cards in fqs you use, those may be good colour dividers? How about 2 1/2" squares. Would about 8 boxes 5" deep by 2 1/2" for those squares fit well inside a 10 1/2" by 5 1/2", stacked 2x high? You could use an old x-ray, or template plastic to keep the base flat? Have you got one for layer cakes yet? All the best.

      Hi Kathleen! I started watching Jean Truelove a while back, although I haven't seen all her videos. I just looked up the video after reading your comment and I bookmarked the video to watch when I can - thanks for that! I had a thought similar to yours with labeling the contents, that's fabulous! There are so many ways they can be used. I had talked with a friend last week and told her I was going to make a taller, narrower one with stiffer sides so it could hold scissors, rotary cutter, etc on my table area. I haven't played around with any other sizes at this point, although I did think about one for layer cakes. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Take care!

    Hi Marie, Just a special thank you for showing us hoe to start sewing by bringing up the bobbin thread…. I do this when I’m quilting but never really bothered to with other projects…well, can I say I have been doing it since you showed us and it has made a huge difference…I am very picky with my sewing and have been struggling with messy beginnings but I have been sewing some new projects and WOW I love them…thanks again🥰

I have done that "trick" for lack of a better word, with my thread for years now, after becoming frustrated with sewn beginnings that looked less than pleasing. It sounds like we are similar in that way, that we like it to look nice. I'm so glad I could bring it to mind for you so you could begin to use it in all your projects!

      @MariesScrappyCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sue! I’m glad you enjoyed this! Yes, tacking down those corners is a game changer. I started doing it early on, in my tote bag, as well as my open wide zippered bag tutorials, as well as a few others. I use the technique quite frequently, as there’s nothing more aggravating to me than to grab inside a bag and have the liner pull up and out. Very unprofessional. Take care and happy sewing!

    I see numerous boxes in my future. A possible decoration to your box, use a solid lining and use a variegated thread with a row of one of the decorative stitches ( that most machines have now) on the turned down lining edge. Would be great baby shower gift to use on changing table.

      Craft fuse should work just fine and I don't think you would need to quilt it. You could if you wanted to, but I don't think it's necessary, as long as it's attached

    I love making fabric boxes ! These are so cute. Be careful with that rotary cutter!!! Just fyi, if you cut your finger, apply pressure to the sides of the finger as that’s where all the veins are and it will help the bleeding to stop faster.💕

    Perfect timing for these great boxes! I love how you take the time to do the “extra” pressing and other ways to add a look of professionalism to every project you make. Those finishing touches really make a difference in the end product. My iron is always on when I’m sewing because I also like the crispness it adds. Have a great Sunday sewing and thank you for another wonderful fun time with you on Sunday morning! 🎃

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Nancy, I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for your sweet comment. Yes, I do like to use those finishing touches and it probably comes from watching my mom sew. She never used any shortcuts in her finishing touches and I think that that is what adds to a project. I almost cringe when I see some TH-camrs who will say “oh it doesn’t matter if you iron it doesn’t make any difference”. It can make ALL the difference. Yes, there are times where it’s not necessary, but I have never found it to be a negative thing in any project. I had to laugh when you said that you always have your iron on… that’s why mine beeps in so many videos, because it’s always on. LOL. Have a fabulous week and happy sewing, Nancy!

      Hi Kristy! I know that interface things and fusible can be confusing and that’s why I tried to throw out some ideas to all of you to let you know that it’s OK to try different things to see how it works for you. I’m a huge believer in using what we have on hand, so it’s just a matter of finding what you have in your craft room. I have made these with straight cotton batting before, I just had to use a few layers of it. Good luck with this and I hope you have a great week.

      @@MariesScrappyCreations I also for to ask, how would you reduce the size to make smaller ones like the one you made out of scraps. Do you reduce length and the width.?

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The smallest box that I made I used used 2 for each outer & lining pieces that were 7" across by 8" tall and I cut out a 1.5 inch square. The next size up I cut 8" across by 9" tall and cut a 1.25 inch square. Just cut all your interfacing and fusibles 1/4 inch shorter than each side. You can play around with it to get different heights and widths. Have fun!
