- Learn to turn your beautiful scraps into a practical hotpad. Leave it on your kitchen counter so you can place pans straight out of the oven onto it without worrying about harming your countertop. Maybe you want to use it as a placemat. Either way, I hope you enjoy the process of sewing your own scrap hot pad.

I love this size of project to practice free motion quilting. It’s big enough to provide enough space to FMQ, but small enough that I don’t have to worry about wrestling it under my machine. I love your scrappy ideas, and I would like to suggest that some editing might help you gain subscribers. Many more people have 15-20 minutes to learn something. Both your tutorial videos are about an hour. Many people will go elsewhere if given two similar videos.
Thank you for your comment, Becky. Yes, it's perfect for FMQ. Do you sew a lot of FMQ? I love to watch people do FMQ, but I really need to learn it. Each time I've tried it, it's been on an old machine that either wasn't working right or I just couldn't get my stitching to come out right. I know there's a lot of trial and error with learning the method, so I really need to just apply myself, sit down to practice, so that I can learn it. It looks so good on so many items, IMO. I think it adds so much to the finished piece!
I appreciate your suggestion about the timing of the videos, but my main objective in starting this channel last week was to chat and feel like I was visiting with my subscribers. Kind of like if a friend were to be here with me, visiting and we sew together. I mentioned in either the first, or one of the first videos, that I'm a chatter and if someone were looking for non-chatty videos, they probably weren't going to "go for" mine, lol. Not all my videos will be that long, like the "What's Up Wednesday" videos will tend to be shorter. I also just got a new sewing machine and I will be doing an unboxing, as well as showing all the different stitches, etc that this machine can perform.
I hope you stick around to see what's coming down the road. Again, I appreciate your feedback!

@@MariesScrappyCreations I like the extra chatter. You pass on some tips when doing same. There's others that run around two hours or so. An hour is perfect when you pass on your tips to some of us who have been sewing for close to 70 years or so. You even came up with some new tricks/tips for an old timer like me... I like when you introduce different items to use when doing same. I use the glue stick a lot when doing applique work instead of ironing that other stuff to the back of the fabric when doing same because the glue stick is the old fashioned way and i save a few pennies when doing same. Keep up the good work. I also use the serpentine stitch, but, have called it the "snake" stitch because didn't know any better....LOL...
@@peggycox1378 Thanks so much, Peggy! I'm so glad that you're finding the videos helpful and that you like the chatter. I am a talker and sometimes I chat more than other times, it just depends. I definitely talk more on my Wednesday videos than during my tutorials, but the one we're commenting on now is one of the first ones I uploaded and everything was so new to me.
I actually didn't know it was called the "serpentine stitch" until about a year ago. I've used it for years and it's one of my most favorite stitches but I heard another TH-camr refer to it by that name and I wondered if I just missed it or I've been living under a rock, lol. Either way, I know now and that's what counts, ha ha.

Watching again, I have a cozy cut out. Need to get a denim needle. Will pick one up Thursday. Then im going to make it. Got my iron, and pattern cut out for the darts. Im super excited for this. You made it look easy. Thorough explanation.
Hi Jamie! I am really behind on my responses, and it seems to be a common theme for me lately,ha ha. Anyway, since you wrote this 9 days ago, I’m going to assume that you have already purchased your denim needles and finished your project. You are working away at all these projects, and like I said to you before, you’re learning at lest one thing with each project that you put your hands to. I’m very proud of you, so just keep going! Being creative is great for our inner happiness!

Thanks Mary! I have it on my countertop and now I don't know what I did before I had it - I use it every day! I've made them for others but this is the first one for myself.
P.S. School glue is awesome. It’s like a third hand.
It truly is! I really want to try the "stick" glue, but the only one I have lying around is that extreme one. But, the clear school glue seems to do the trick!
I left another comment but It seems to have disappeared. Either I deleted It or TH-cam put It in your held for review section 🤷♀️
The liquid glue is easier to control. You can add a dot here and there as needed. The glue stick is a more broad swipe. They both have their place.
@@rsislandcrafts I do review all comments, but I didn't see another one from you, other than those I've replied to. I tend to think the same, the liquid is easier to control. I haven't been using it very long, so it's still kind of new to me. But, to think of all it's uses... not sure why someone didn't think of it sooner, lol!
@@MariesScrappyCreations When you use the glue sticks you don't have to dry the glue with an iron. You just let it set for a few seconds. I also use the store brand ones too, not just Elmer's. I keep a couple packs of 4 on hand for same.
@@peggycox1378 thanks for all your tips, I appreciate them! I've only used glue for basting over the past few years and then not a lot. It depends on the project and what I'm doing. Do you do a lot of applique?
Ohh I love that! Would be great to put jars on that have just come out the canner.
Yes, it would! I haven't done any canning for a number of years now, but I think of it often and really miss it. When our children were younger, I used to can upwards of a thousand and sometimes more, jars of food a year.

Good morning! Thank you, I love it in my kitchen and I get to see it everyday. Now when it's not in use, I keep it underneath my toaster and blender and I pull it out onto the counter when I have something in the oven.

It’s funny that you commented on this video, because my quilted hot pad went through it’s first wash yesterday and this morning, I saw how beautifully crinkly it turned out and I thought how I should show it on an upcoming What’s Up Wednesday. I love it when the cotton batting shrinks up just a bit and looks all crinkly like that!

Magic clips holds the binding real well I use them all the time
Hi Sonya! Yes, I have heard that they work well. I’ve mentioned a few times here and there in videos that I have a terrible time with them, for some reason. Lol. My granddaughter bought me some three or four years ago and I tried using them quite a few times, on smaller projects like zippered bags. Either way, they seem to get caught up on my machine and feel like they “weight” my project down and then my stitch line didn’t stay straight at 1/4 inch from the edge. It’s probably because I’m not used to using them. I keep trying to force myself to try them again and again, because I see that people find them helpful. Maybe you just can’t teach an old dog new tricks, ha ha.

I love the quilting stitch when you sandwiched your hot pad together Marie. I do miss the cc's (closed captions) option.
Thanks Ann! I used a serpentine stitch on my Brother machine. It was #22 on this model, but that varies from model to model. I used a stitch length of 3.0 and a stitch width of 5.5.

I figured out the CC thing. It's a setting on my end. From what I can tell, I now have CC on all but my most recent video. The reason for that is from what I've read, I have to give TH-cam time to generate the CC words. So, I guess it can take 12-24 hours after an upload. Then, I click "add" from my end. So, I'll go in from time to time to check on them to see if they're ready.

Your videos are great and the more you do the better you get. I personally like the chatting and demonstration, I feel like I used too when my friend and I got together in her sewing room. We made all kinds of sewing projects over the years. I don't have many sewing projects on my channel. But I did post the baby quilt I made. Most of my viewers are guys. 😆 We mostly do videos about our off grid life. Oh! Just figured out why my video was longer than I expected... I forgot to edit out a part so the end 🙃 is on twice! 😅

I love the size of this. Can Insulbrite be used in these and if you used that, would you only do a single layer of the batting?
Hi! I would use 2 layers of insulbrite, or one cotton batting and one insulbrite. Have fun!

a tip for video recording, all shooting should be done horizontal not vertical. this gets rid of the black sides

Hi Anita! Thanks, I appreciate that. This was one of my first two videos that I ever made, right full of "oopsies". I knew the black lines were there, but at that point, I didn't know how to edit them out. Still now, I film in horizontal, yet some still have to be turned. I'm not sure why it happens, but at least now I know how to fix them. With these two videos, I could certainly go back and take them down and re-upload them, but I'd lose the comments, so I've left them up. How much bigger is the backing on your big hot pad to make your binding? This is my next step

Se bem me lembro, meu tamanho final era de aproximadamente 10 "x 14". Quando costurei, cortei em 1,5" para as bordas em todas as quatro bordas antes de dobrar e costurar a costura superior. Espero ter ajudado

I like the way you take time to develop a project and then share with others a how to video. Very generous of you and the way I think the world should work. I’m thinking on the pin cushion cause the one I use for my longarm doesn’t have a backing to keep me from poking my arm.
Some people say just do a tutorial and don’t talk has much and drag the learning curb because us older folks like getting to the point from start to finish. 😅
