I backed this during the Ark Nova craze last year. Between the interaction and the designers dedication to balance/curbing the role of randomness, I knew this would be something special. 40 plays later and I can say it’s the best engine builder since Terraforming Mars. And while it’s not quite on the same level as TM and Race for the Galaxy, it’s knocking on the door.
Camilla reminds me of Roy. When Roy does reviews and he gets excited he speaks faster and speaks a little louder. Camilla did the same thing in this review. With that being said, with all of the glowing praise for this game, I am excited to try it as well.

It’s funny because I was trying not to back anything at the time this game was crowdfunding, but I was so struck by the passion and design that went into this game I had to back it. I have only become more excited and glad that I did. Seeing these reviews only reinforces that excitement and I am so very glad I supported this project. A big shout out to Joey Evans for personally teaching us this game at DTW. He did a great job and I loved the game all the more by not having to rely on the rulebook for my first playthrough. A very fun game and I just got my personal copy in my game library...so I can now return the favor and teach and play with others!
I tend to only back reprints on KS but this one grabbed me attention and a few solo plays on TTS solidified it. Very excited to see how much all four of these reviewers liked it particularly as they represent varied tastes and preferences. Can't get here soon enough :)
The designer, Maxime Tariff - his most successful game to this point was "BrilliAnts" ranked 6370 on BGG in 2017. This shows how you can seem to have no success and then still have a big smash hit! Can't wait to play at some point.

I’ve been eyeing this game with some hesitation, wondering if me and my family might find it too difficult, but after watching this video and the live-play from the Spring Spectacular this week, I purchased a copy. A game that can make someone feel giddy with joy (that sold me, Mike) is worth the effort.
I'm not surprised by these scores having played it on TTS a few times (and then backing it). It's an amazing game that I want to play over and over again!

Like others have said, I'm already so excited to receive my copy but seeing your reviews is enhancing that excitement so much! Just wish the reviews mentioned player count and length of the game as they're such big factors for me
Average game maybe an hour and half I feel like? A bit longer for first play, but being always active keeps you engaged the whole time. Any player count seemed fine.
Hi Henri! Glad you mention it, it always depends on players obviously, but Earth is pretty fast game for the amount of strategy in it. When my Girlfriend and I play a 2 player game, it's usually around 30-40 minutes. 45 including set up and tear down. Our fastest game was 20 minutes. But then since I designed the game and we've played 342 games of it so that might help a little ;), and also take this comparison with a grain of salt then. For comparison, here's how much time it takes us to play other games similar in strategy games : TM, we've played 18 games, around 1h30 the game in average TM Ares, 14 games played, about 1h the game Ark Nova, 8 games played, 1h30 Wingspan, 132 games played, 50 min Race for the galaxy, 27 games played, 25 min Roll for the galaxy, 55 games played, 45 min These times are for 2 players in average, but since in Earth everybody plays at the same time as in RFTG, if you add more players it shouldn't add to much time.

I’ve been waiting for this game and specifically this review for a few months now and when Mike started talking about his score I had a feeling of my eyes welling up. The joy he felt I felt as well and I can’t wait to have my copy be delivered.
Man! I wished I backed the wooden inserts, but hopefully it comes back in stock, if it ever does. Now after seeing how this game works, it's a much lighter version of Terra the board and card game, as well as Ark. Wonder how the solo mode will be like.
I played solo in TTS and the solo mode is absolutely wonderful. In fact, I backed the KS based on the solo mode alone. To me this game is a perfect middle-weight to fall between Wingspan and Ark Nova, two games which I already hold in extremely high regard as a solo player. Very excited to get this one to the table.
I backed this, so of course am thrilled the review was good. I already knew I would like this game having seen what it did. I feel that we need to give kudos to the designer Maxine Tardiff for making this game but also to Inside Out games. They ran a great kickstarter campaign, the communication since has been excellent. I'm glad DT reviewed it. I ordered this game (^^) The big pile of cards is totally fine -- I have a card shuffler for my Wingspan bird cards anyway 🤣 other channels also gave this a 80%+ looking forward to it!
I'm trying to get some thematic feel based on the overview part and based on the bgg page, but I don't get their enthousiasm. Maybe this one is just not for me :)
I agree. I have always loved watching Dice Tower videos for the entertainment (the top 10s are fantastic), but my taste in games is so different from that of the DT crew that the scores are meaningless to me. My second favorite game of all-time (Uprising Curse of the Last Emperor is a 10 for me) barely pulled a 5 from DT folks. In contrast, I couldn't get past the rules overview for either this or Ark Nova as I find everything about the modern euro so incredibly dull. No worries, plenty of games for everyone.
I've played tons of Race and Earth, and can tell you they have similarities but are still very different. Both are fast paced games that play really quick, race a little quicker but not by much. Race is more focused on specific and predetermined path and strategy while Earth is what I call an open world engine builder, you can do almost anything, but you have to find the best way to do so. There are a couple ways to victory in Race, in Earth there are tons of ways. If you like Race, you'll probably like Earth and vice versa :)
I am still concerned the game will be quite solitaire, which bothers me, it is a personal taste thing. I know players can follow and take action on all turns, like in Ares Expegdition, and typically this considered a form of interaction by some people, but in reality I often find this mechanism to alienate other players since everyone is doing their own thing, heads down doing all their mini moves, getting resources, converting stuff, scoring points, etc but no one is paying attention on the actual competition, auditing other players turns, following and reacting to other players are doing... Everyone is having their (very fun, apparently) mini game but all in silos and I simply dont enjoy that experience. As Mike said, you may want to share your moves and your cards, but other players have almost no reason to care... Great review and ratings, but I am still unsure.
I think it’s a given in the Dice Tower that would not be a detractor. Almost everyone on the team has a disdain for any sort of negative interaction, and very much enjoy building their own ivory tower. It’s something you have to be aware of.

The way I see it, one should ask the question: Is the best I can do can be assessed purely by my own portion of the game or should I consider what others are doing and adjust accordingly? I want to play the game but compete against people... I dont want to compete against the game itself.
That is very fair. But, it seems that this game is so fun, that you don't care about what other people are doing and you don't need to. So, even if you like real interaction in your games, I'd say try this one. These scores are really high.
I enjoyed the game, absolutely, but i did feel a bit overwhelmed, mainly by the number of cards I was collecting throughout the game. Every card had unique text, and it could feel like i needed to consider every card and change my plans when better cards hit my hand. I did learn to let go and just stay focused. If my choice wasn't optimal, oh well. Ha. Thanks for the review!
Mixed feelings for me on this one... It seems to be difficult in this kind of games (Ark Nova, Wingspan, Terraforming Mars, ...) to have a balance in luck of card draw (this one even without open row of cards). I like all of these games because of the game play but sometimes man, it's hard to lose against someone who've got every card they needed an the right time. One other negative for me is the same as in Everdell, the more your card grid grows, the more difficult it is to keep track of the cards, especially those from the other players. Taking turns simultaneously is nice, but sometimes I like to know what other people did. Overall still a 8.5 for me...
Hey DT crew, one thing I was hoping to hear during the review is how this game compared game length wise to say Ark Nova, Wingspan, Terraforming Mars or Ares Expedition? They are some our favourite games so we’re really interested in this game, but just wondering how long it is in comparison to them in your opinion?
I am not a DT crew, but I designed Earth, played 347 games of it, 8 of Ark Nova, 18 of TM, 14 of Ares and 132 of Wingspan. At 2 players, average game time are as follow for my girlfriend and I: Earth 40 mins, Ark Nova 1h30, TM 1h30, Ares 1h, Wingspan 45 min. We play quite fast usually, Earth may even be 30 minutes most of the time. With more players, you would not add to much time to Earth and Ares since there is simultaneous action while the others would go up significantly, maybe 30 minutes more per player as opposed to 5-10 min more per player in Earth and Ares. Hope this is helpful!

Since you know the game so well I’ll assume double the timings for ourselves, but still this would be a great game length for us 2 player, and I like the sound of it not being an extra hour plus for four players.

Won't lie, as time passed since the KS, I've hemmed and hawed on whether I made a mistake backing. Kinda lost interest. This review got me really excited to receive it next month
I played this game quite much on Tabletop Simulator and really like it, one thing that bothers me though is that sometimes you end up having like 15 cards in your hand and lose the overview, especially since the game is relatively fast paced. This is why i prefer Ark Nova. On the other hand, Earth is a way quicker game while not missing complexity so if someone suggests it i join without hesitation!
I haven't played this yet I have just seen some reviews, playthroughs and I see one disadvantage of this game, however it refers only to some types of players. What I mean by that, is this game has hardly any player interaction. It looks like a totally solitary game and other players turns are just continuation of building your own "back yard". Don't get me wrong - I love such games (TM, Ark Nova many others in my collection). This game is definitely on top spot of the 'What to buy next' list, for me. However there are some players who like at least some level of interaction in games, even TM and Ark Nova has some of that, for instance in a way of "take that" mechanism. From what I have seen so far, such players won't find anything like that in this game, so that might be an issue for them. I think it's fair to point that out, taking into account huge hype that has grown around this game. That being said I still think it will be an excellent game for me, especially since my wife (who I mostly play with) is definitely a fan of such setup, but we will both find it as a great addition to our collection. Would be nice if someone who already played it corrected my feeling about this game and player interaction if I am wrong here. Great video Dice Tower, keep it up!
Played this game tonight. Felt it was a good game for sure, but for my husband and I it was not fantastic. We each gave it an 8. I much prefer Ark Nova (10) and Everdell (8.75), games some have used as comparisons to Earth.
@@zmann4444 Oops, didn't look very close. Those are Canadian dollars. I paid $43 for the game, $13 for the "goodies" and $48 for five neoprene play mats, and $13 for shipping for a total of $117. Seems like a decent deal. If you got the same for $77, I done got jacked!
Game is very good with replayability. Some of the instructions are wonky. Rule book is thin. End Game rules are not fully explained. Only other complaint is with growth "tree" tiles. Its easy to knock them over and the growth tiles can be warped. I'm buying it so don't take this as a negative comment
Is there any interaction in this game apart from competing for the goal cards? Looks like another heads down puzzle where you're spending time with the game rather than the other players.
Yes you need to be aware of what others are doing to not deal into their hand and modify your play accordingly. If you don't do so, you'll probably lose many games ;)
InsideUp Games lists April 23 as the official release date. They state if you pre-order from them, you can get the game earlier since they'll start shipping their pre-orders beginning April 2. Game Nerdz has the expected release date of May 31 but they're sold out.

Earth is setting the bar high for rest of the year’s games. It will be in top 10’s for sure, but how many top 5’s since it is coming out so early in the year? Can’t wait to play it. Thanks for group review but wanted to hear more about components and if pieces stack ok or if they fall over often. Not sure what you call this kind of player interaction where you get something on another player’s turn (Space Base comes to mind) but I love that because it keeps everyone interested in the game and specifically what you do on your turn. The race to the end game goals keeps you somewhat interested in other players’ tableau too.
This is the first I've heard of the game. From the video I get the sense that it almost doesn't matter what you do -- every choice is wonderful and anything you want to do is fairly easy to accomplish. It sounds like a game with no frustrations or serious challenges to strive for. Games like that usually get tiresome to me after a few plays of figuring out the mechanisms. I could be completely wrong, but that is my impression from the review.
Depends on what you like. I designed it for, let's say, if in a normal game the active player gets +1 and the other 0 or -1, in this game the active player gets +3 and the other +2 or +1. So in the end the choice is as important and decisive. It's just harder to see with a naked eye, but the mathematical end result is the same. At least everybody has fun doing so. You don't have to wait 1 hour to get 1 carrot and maybe a potato if you are lucky ;)
In my most recent play, I really struggled to complete two of the four fauna cards. It took until my second-to-last turn to play 8 cold habitat cards and 11+ cards worth 3- points. It felt very satisfying to get them done.
I have Ark Nova, TM etc.. just got Life of Amazonia, so I am going to skip this one. I need more medium weight games, easier to introduce to friends. (Edited: the game kind of grew on me - got it yesterday, so I changed my mind on it)
Ha, that's kind of you but this one was 100% Mike. Everyone on the team comes up with them and I am sometimes jealous of the ones the others come up with.
I don’t like photographs in board games at all. I like playing Ark Nova, but to me that’s an ugly game. I’ll have to play someone else’s copy of this game at some point.

I have always loved watching Dice Tower videos for the entertainment (the top 10s are fantastic), but my taste in games is so different from that of the DT crew that the scores are meaningless to me. My second favorite game of all-time (Uprising Curse of the Last Emperor is a 10 for me) barely pulled a 5 from DT folks. In contrast, I couldn't get past the rules overview for either this or Ark Nova as I find everything about the modern euro so incredibly dull. No worries, plenty of games for everyone.

Was waiting for a comparison to Race for the Galaxy. Honestly looks muh closer to that than Ares
I've played tons of Race and Earth, and can tell you they have similarities but are still very different. Both are fast paced games that play really quick, race a little quicker but not by much. Race is more focused on specific and predetermined path and strategy while Earth is what I call an open world engine builder, you can do almost anything, but you have to find the best way to do so. There are a couple ways to victory in Race, in Earth there are tons of ways. If you like Race, you'll probably like Earth and vice versa :)
I played it on TTS during the kickstarter and I said the same. It's similar to Ares Expedition but better. Ares is good but I prefer this.

I am still concerned the game will be quite solitaire, which bothers me, it is a personal taste thing. I know players can follow and take action on all turns, like in Ares Expegdition, and typically this considered a form of interaction by some people, but in reality I often find this mechanism to alienate other players since everyone is doing their own thing, heads down doing all their mini moves, getting resources, converting stuff, scoring points, etc but no one is paying attention on the actual competition, auditing other players turns, following and reacting to other players are doing... Everyone is having their (very fun, apparently) mini game but all in silos and I simply dont enjoy that experience. As Mike said, you may want to share your moves and your cards, but other players have almost no reason to care... Great review and ratings, but I am still unsure.
I think it’s a given in the Dice Tower that would not be a detractor. Almost everyone on the team has a disdain for any sort of negative interaction, and very much enjoy building their own ivory tower.
It’s something you have to be aware of.
If the lead/follow mechanic isn’t enough for you, then steer clear of this game. It is a heads down euro through and through.

The way I see it, one should ask the question: Is the best I can do can be assessed purely by my own portion of the game or should I consider what others are doing and adjust accordingly? I want to play the game but compete against people... I dont want to compete against the game itself.

That is very fair. But, it seems that this game is so fun, that you don't care about what other people are doing and you don't need to. So, even if you like real interaction in your games, I'd say try this one. These scores are really high.

I enjoyed the game, absolutely, but i did feel a bit overwhelmed, mainly by the number of cards I was collecting throughout the game. Every card had unique text, and it could feel like i needed to consider every card and change my plans when better cards hit my hand.
I did learn to let go and just stay focused. If my choice wasn't optimal, oh well. Ha.

I regret not pushing through on backing
Mixed feelings for me on this one... It seems to be difficult in this kind of games (Ark Nova, Wingspan, Terraforming Mars, ...) to have a balance in luck of card draw (this one even without open row of cards). I like all of these games because of the game play but sometimes man, it's hard to lose against someone who've got every card they needed an the right time. One other negative for me is the same as in Everdell, the more your card grid grows, the more difficult it is to keep track of the cards, especially those from the other players. Taking turns simultaneously is nice, but sometimes I like to know what other people did. Overall still a 8.5 for me...
Hey DT crew, one thing I was hoping to hear during the review is how this game compared game length wise to say Ark Nova, Wingspan, Terraforming Mars or Ares Expedition? They are some our favourite games so we’re really interested in this game, but just wondering how long it is in comparison to them in your opinion?
I am not a DT crew, but I designed Earth, played 347 games of it, 8 of Ark Nova, 18 of TM, 14 of Ares and 132 of Wingspan. At 2 players, average game time are as follow for my girlfriend and I: Earth 40 mins, Ark Nova 1h30, TM 1h30, Ares 1h, Wingspan 45 min. We play quite fast usually, Earth may even be 30 minutes most of the time. With more players, you would not add to much time to Earth and Ares since there is simultaneous action while the others would go up significantly, maybe 30 minutes more per player as opposed to 5-10 min more per player in Earth and Ares. Hope this is helpful!

Since you know the game so well I’ll assume double the timings for ourselves, but still this would be a great game length for us 2 player, and I like the sound of it not being an extra hour plus for four players.

Kind of a bummer about the colour blind accessibility. I wish the colour matching mechanism had some symbols to go along with it.

Won't lie, as time passed since the KS, I've hemmed and hawed on whether I made a mistake backing. Kinda lost interest. This review got me really excited to receive it next month
I played this game quite much on Tabletop Simulator and really like it, one thing that bothers me though is that sometimes you end up having like 15 cards in your hand and lose the overview, especially since the game is relatively fast paced. This is why i prefer Ark Nova. On the other hand, Earth is a way quicker game while not missing complexity so if someone suggests it i join without hesitation!

Does it play great at 2 players?
I haven't played this yet I have just seen some reviews, playthroughs and I see one disadvantage of this game, however it refers only to some types of players. What I mean by that, is this game has hardly any player interaction. It looks like a totally solitary game and other players turns are just continuation of building your own "back yard". Don't get me wrong - I love such games (TM, Ark Nova many others in my collection). This game is definitely on top spot of the 'What to buy next' list, for me. However there are some players who like at least some level of interaction in games, even TM and Ark Nova has some of that, for instance in a way of "take that" mechanism. From what I have seen so far, such players won't find anything like that in this game, so that might be an issue for them. I think it's fair to point that out, taking into account huge hype that has grown around this game.
That being said I still think it will be an excellent game for me, especially since my wife (who I mostly play with) is definitely a fan of such setup, but we will both find it as a great addition to our collection.
Would be nice if someone who already played it corrected my feeling about this game and player interaction if I am wrong here.

Played this game tonight. Felt it was a good game for sure, but for my husband and I it was not fantastic. We each gave it an 8. I much prefer Ark Nova (10) and Everdell (8.75), games some have used as comparisons to Earth.
First I've heard about this game. But I trust these guys enough now that I just dropped $157 on a pre-order with the upgrades. Looking forward to it.

@@zmann4444 Oops, didn't look very close. Those are Canadian dollars. I paid $43 for the game, $13 for the "goodies" and $48 for five neoprene play mats, and $13 for shipping for a total of $117. Seems like a decent deal. If you got the same for $77, I done got jacked!

Game is very good with replayability. Some of the instructions are wonky. Rule book is thin. End Game rules are not fully explained. Only other complaint is with growth "tree" tiles. Its easy to knock them over and the growth tiles can be warped. I'm buying it so don't take this as a negative comment
Is there any interaction in this game apart from competing for the goal cards? Looks like another heads down puzzle where you're spending time with the game rather than the other players.
Yes, every action of yours triggers action for every other player.
Yes you need to be aware of what others are doing to not deal into their hand and modify your play accordingly. If you don't do so, you'll probably lose many games ;)
When does it hit retail and US OLGSs?
InsideUp Games lists April 23 as the official release date. They state if you pre-order from them, you can get the game earlier since they'll start shipping their pre-orders beginning April 2. Game Nerdz has the expected release date of May 31 but they're sold out.

@@maxtardif4959 Based upon the DT review, I think the only pressure you have to worry about is meeting the upcoming demand for the game; a good problem to have. Kudos to your success. I like Wingspan but a friend loved it so it has a good home.
Earth is setting the bar high for rest of the year’s games. It will be in top 10’s for sure, but how many top 5’s since it is coming out so early in the year? Can’t wait to play it.

Not sure what you call this kind of player interaction where you get something on another player’s turn (Space Base comes to mind) but I love that because it keeps everyone interested in the game and specifically what you do on your turn. The race to the end game goals keeps you somewhat interested in other players’ tableau too.

This is the first I've heard of the game. From the video I get the sense that it almost doesn't matter what you do -- every choice is wonderful and anything you want to do is fairly easy to accomplish. It sounds like a game with no frustrations or serious challenges to strive for. Games like that usually get tiresome to me after a few plays of figuring out the mechanisms. I could be completely wrong, but that is my impression from the review.
Depends on what you like. I designed it for, let's say, if in a normal game the active player gets +1 and the other 0 or -1, in this game the active player gets +3 and the other +2 or +1. So in the end the choice is as important and decisive. It's just harder to see with a naked eye, but the mathematical end result is the same. At least everybody has fun doing so. You don't have to wait 1 hour to get 1 carrot and maybe a potato if you are lucky ;)
In my most recent play, I really struggled to complete two of the four fauna cards. It took until my second-to-last turn to play 8 cold habitat cards and 11+ cards worth 3- points. It felt very satisfying to get them done.

People seem to like their nature photos, no matter how the game works.
I don’t like photographs in board games at all. I like playing Ark Nova, but to me that’s an ugly game. I’ll have to play someone else’s copy of this game at some point.
That is very fair. The game sounds really fun and I will be buying it, but it does look ugly to me, and that will detract from my experience.
