"but I just feel too tired to be fighting, guess I'm not the fighting kind" - Your best track EVER and the best track that has ever been written. Thank you for keeping me high for my entire youth with your music! True musicians. You will live forever!
The verse that sums up loss and estrangement: "I wake up its a bad dream, No-one on my side, I was fighting, But I just feel too tired to be fighting, Guess I'm not the fighting kind, Wouldn't minded if you were by side, But you're long one, yeah you're gone now...." Brilliant.
I have the privilege to see them past tuesday in Santiago, Chile, it was absolutly perfect, Tom's voice is the same, no matter how many years have passed, beautiful concert, love love love for all of you, standing ovation!
Thank you for this profound comment. It has made me ponder on my musical choices. It is not simply because "I'm in the mood for Keane." It is so much more 😊
When I was 17, one day I came home and saw my dad crying. He told us that he has been addicted to alcohol and he sold our house due to financial problems because of the addiction. I had to leave most of my things there and so all my childhood memories. My parents divorced and my brother had serious problems with depressions and alcohol addiction, too. Today, I am 10 years older and still remember that when it was the worst, I used to listen to "A bad dream" hoping, that is is just a bad dream.
This song helped me through a really difficult time, and I’m kind of comforted by reading that it helped someone else this way. And yes, many thanks to Keane for this gem.
I was working at Camp America in North Carolina in 2007 & my co counsellor got run over by a speed boat & died in front of a group of 6 year old kids. It was awful. This song got my through it x
Wow ! Thanks for sharing this privacy. As a former french prime minister said, "Good things make times to come". We all have our bad experiences of life and familie's struggles, which become with time bad dreams. 15 years ago, I was working with shifted hours and didn't have possibility to change easily of work, missing my children growing. Thanks to my wife and to the Creator, I succeded to change the situation and rebalance our family's life. In this period, I was listening to this album. This song was one of my favorite...
Before a concert, Tom explained what this song means. It's about a soldier going to war. In fact, a lot of the album is about disillusionment with the ways of the world and all the current events (war, etc.) But I love how the lyrics are vague so most people end up spinning it to be about failed relationships and other sad themes....let's break it down and it'll all make sense. Why do I have to fly? (GOING TO WAR) Over every town up and down the line? I'll die in the clouds above And you that I defend, I had do not love (NOT NECESSARILY CARING ABOUT THOSE YOU'RE FIGHTING FOR, MOST ARE STRANGERS ANYWAY) I wake up, it's a bad dream No one on my side (IT'S WAR) I was fighting But I just feel too tired To be fighting Guess I'm not the fighting kind Where will I meet my fate? (FEAR DEATH) Baby I'm a man, I was born to hate And when will I meet my end? In a better time you could be my friend (ABOUT THE ENEMY, HE DOESN'T REALLY "HATE" HIM BUT IT'S WAR SO YOU HAVE TO KILL; IN ANY OTHER CIRCUMSTANCE THE ENEMY COULD HAVE BEEN SOME PERSON YOU BEFRIENDED) Where do we go? (POINTLESSNESS OF WAR) I don't even know My strange old face (FIGHTING AND TIME HAS AGED THIS SOLDIER) And I'm thinking about those days (BEFORE HE HAD TO FIGHT, BEFORE HE WENT TO WAR, FRIENDS, FAMILIES, ETC) And I'm thinking about those days
Carlas goodbye to Laverne with this playing in the background is still one of the most emotional scenes ive seen in a Tv show-Its like she's actually saying it to a real life person-rather than a character
A few years ago, I used to cry to this so badly. Literally to the point of hyperventilation. I was in such a dark place that the father of my children put me through. I forgot it for a few years, and now listening to it feels good. I made it out of that bad dream. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
This is lyrically one of the greatest songs ever written. By all acounts it was written to depict the thoughts and emotions of a soldier that's been sent out to war. But you can interpret these words anyway you want. Could be a loved one that has passed away, maybe you had a turbulent relationship with them when they were alive or maybe you didn't. Could be a partner that you have separated from and this is describing the pain that you are feeling. And I'm sure there are plethora of other scenarios that could be related to this song, and that is the genius of it !!!
This part is me: "Could be a partner that you have separated from and this is describing the pain that you are feeling." I am no longer feeling the strong feeling of pain. I think I am in the stage of acceptance. Beautifully written and performed. I love this song. 💙💙
As one of the comments above says, much of it is taken from Yeats. The poem begins: I know that I shall meet my fate Somewhere among the clouds above; Those that I fight I do not hate, Those that I guard I do not love

Tom Ryder That reads a little odd, but I actually get it. I had some built up problems in the past with people who refused to treat me like a person, but we had mutual friends and they just didn't want to pick sides and wouldn't acknowledge the other person truly being a jerk. So yeah, started feeling a lot of pent up anger. Then one day someone responded to a status and told me that anger was a normal and necessary emotion like the rest and it wasn't fair that people would try to deny my feeling it in a piss poor attempt at non-confrontation, that it wasn't healthy to only feel or at least present the "good" emotions, especially if circumstances didn't make them appropriate/natural to feel. Sad that I'm not even that close to the person who said that, but it was one of those forever helpful moments. It's not fair if you're being hurt or disrespected to not express anger at that and to always brush it off. Some people, it seems more so these days, do not see that as being the bigger person, only someone they can continue to direct their negativity at without consequences.
The only part of the lyrics I actually could never feel (lol) and therefore refused to sing, back when I was listening to this song almost every night.
2:08 ... is almost celestial to me To say “ moving” is an understatement Me and my mum used to listen to this together She said this song was like a prayer. R.I.P mum I still listen and still feel us both still listening together.💗
And then just when you least expect it, love finds you in the form of your significant other your age as they embrace you with a hug that tells you "everything's okay and I love you."
"Remember my first day, when that patient came in and started bleeding out on me, and I was so shocked I could barely move. But you stood by my side, and you guided me through it. And then you did the most amazing thing of all, you made me laugh. For the last 15 years you've been my role model, but most of all you've been my friend. And I don't know what else to say but I'm gonna really really miss you. Goodbye."
DA LAS GRACIAS QUE LES FUE MIUY BIEN (LO MEJOR DE HECHO) :) Thank you that it went very well (to you and to Tom Keane) in fact it is the best thing that can happen to you :)
Some years ago I was on a travel on bus, during it, was listening some music and spending time with my inner toughts, watching throught the window, remembering the past, coping with the present and wondering what the future holds. Then this song started playing and it felt special, it was special moment I cant explain it well, but made that mundane moment on the road to mean something more profound even if it was for just a few minutes, noticed time passing (years) and was grateful for been alive. Im Still.
I don't think it would be surprising to say that my top favourite bands ever are Keane, Coldplay, and U2. Especially Keane and Coldplay, to me it's a tie, truly they're both at no. 1. Great artists!
+Montse Ma I think I feel what you feel. No one else that I know feels that connection. It is hard to describe. I have seen them four times all over the U.S. They were a great band and who actually said something in their lyrics. Miss them.
+Jim H I only have seen them once when they came to Barcelona some years ago. I couldn't imagine that I would have the privilege to listen to them... I'd like to repeat that experience again!
It still feels like a bad dream after my mother died in January from cancer. Each day I wake up and like to imagine that's all it was. This song helps though. Keane are a special band.
This hits me to the core. The sound of this song explains every feeling of loss I've experienced as a human being. It's tragically beautifully and heartbreaking...I cannot stop listening
music like this brings me the deepest sense of nostalgia. idk how to explain it other than i feel outside my body when i listen. absolutely love and miss early 2000 classics like these
This song… doesn’t pull you up but pushes you further down to get yourself back up on your own. A piece of utter beauty and magnificence. Thank you keane

London, astral protection, the convolutional neural network, the sudden quiet and entrance into the next phase of life, work soon and apprehension will dissipate, sometimes sad times come but optimism shines through
I love Tom singing from the most danceable, peaceful, romantic songs to the darkest and most reflective. In addition to her beautiful voice, the song's lyrics and melody bring emotion!
The whole song is a work of art, but the 15-second introductory piece at the start is truly soul-stirring. Thing is though, what is that sort of chirping sound going on in the background of that bit? Seriously, if you turn up your volume and listen carefully, ideally through decent headphones, you can hear something that sounds like either some kind of bird or a woodwind instrument. Someone tell me what is making that sound because for me it defines the piece as the finest easy-listening to bless the ears of humankind.
The piano and the synthesizer makes a really good background, all note of piano is extended, the finish is for example if you plays normally: tum, tum, tum, the finish as the same, but in this song sounds: tum, tum, tummmmmmmmmm. the last part, this mmmmmmmmmmm, make an effect incredible when is mixed with the synthesizer.
If you watch the live version of this song from the O2 show in 2007, Neil Hannon reads out the poem this song is based on before it is played, and the sound you mentioned is being played in the background.. It's available on here if you search, really haunting sound

I love this song so much, its my very favorite one at the moment
The verse that sums up loss and estrangement:
"I wake up its a bad dream,
No-one on my side, I was fighting,
But I just feel too tired to be fighting,
Guess I'm not the fighting kind,
Wouldn't minded if you were by side,

Brilliant.
This is an absolute classic.
"In a better time, you could be my friend". Wow. That line floors me.
Very deep

Most people would go with "Somewhere Only We Know" or "Everybody's Changing", but I think this is their absolute best song.
They got a lot songs like that! Bedshaped is probably mine.

The best thing about Keane's music, is that everyone listening hears what they need for whatever they are going through. Beautiful!
True. In fact this is based off a poem about a WW1 pilot

It's actually about an Irish man in the British army. 'Those who I defend (The Brits) I do not love.'
It’s actually an adaption of a famous poetry, “The Irishman”
Now I have read your comment, I love this song more
when a poet is also a musician. Keane.

i suspect that most of it lifted from the superb 'An Irish Airman Foresees His Death' by WB Yeats.
As one of the comments above says, much of it is taken from Yeats. The poem begins:
I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love
That is so powerful and true.
Keane has always had those magic in their songs. I cannot Tell…

All of Keane's songs are equally beautiful.
"Where will i meet my fate? Baby' I'm a man, I was born to hate."
Damn. Some powerful lyrics there
People give hate a bad rap.
It's about war guys
The only part of the lyrics I actually could never feel (lol) and therefore refused to sing, back when I was listening to this song almost every night.
2:08 ... is almost celestial to me
To say “ moving” is an understatement
Me and my mum used to listen to this together
She said this song was like a prayer.
R.I.P mum I still listen and still feel us both still listening together.💗
One of the best songs of Keane .
So beautiful and emotional.
Keane masterpiece, genius.
Just Watched them today 19/10/2024 at Co-Op Live in Manchester. Wow. Special people. Special performance. ❤

I was there too, they were amazing!
Oh my gosh, as soon as I hear this, goose bumps all over. I remember fondly, 'Keane Chatter.' x
Absolutely love this song the lyrics and toms vocals are awesome ❤😢❤
This song helped me when I was down, when I was sad with nobody next to me... I love this song
And then just when you least expect it, love finds you in the form of your significant other your age as they embrace you with a hug that tells you "everything's okay and I love you."

This is the song that made me fall in love with this band... A masterpiece
The genius of this song is that it can be interpreted many different ways. Songwriting like this just doesn't happen as often as it should.
All of albums are just so beautiful arrangements with lovely songs and music for all time since my childhood.
Goodbye."

one of my alltime favourite songs ever. its timeless. everytime i hear it, it gives me chills like it did when i first heard it years ago
My mom just died. Keane is the only music that brings me any kind of comfort
This music video speaks to my existentialism on a deep level
Sometimes I'll see this song in my recommended but wont click because I know I'll spiral into that myself
DA LAS GRACIAS QUE LES FUE MIUY BIEN (LO MEJOR DE HECHO) :) Thank you that it went very well (to you and to Tom Keane) in fact it is the best thing that can happen to you :)
Phenomenal tune .. absolutely phenomenal .
Once in a lifetime song
Those who know Keane must be very special people
Listening to this live was probably one of the best moments of my life.
I am just floating.....simply ethereal.
Im Still.
Like a mixture of Coldplay, Radiohead, U2 and Travis, and yet this song is still unmistakably Keane.
Don't forget crowded house
I don't think it would be surprising to say that my top favourite bands ever are Keane, Coldplay, and U2. Especially Keane and Coldplay, to me it's a tie, truly they're both at no. 1. Great artists!
....bit of Superdrag, too.....
Coldplay and keane are my best ❤❤
@@MikeAlabbasiand radiohead too
I wonder if anyone could feel what I feel when I listen to them...this kind of feeling is only produced by music of this level. They are awesome.
+Montse Ma Just remember you're not the only one :)
+Montse Ma - Keane make me feel human, and I understand the true meaning of pain and joy at the same time.
Montse Ma Keane songs get in your heart ❤️ & soul, Tom Chaplin has the voice of a angel 😇 🎶
It still feels like a bad dream after my mother died in January from cancer. Each day I wake up and like to imagine that's all it was. This song helps though. Keane are a special band.
Muito bom! ;)
Yes. Great records from these guys.
Something about this song really hits me emotionally and I don’t even know why, it’s absolutely stunning
Same man, I rarely get really emotional by music but this song just hits me so hard. Can never finish it without tears in my eyes
Imagine if you heard this song for the first time in the days after a traumatic event like a break up. It takes me back to that time
this song is beautiful, masterpiece
I love this song!
this is one of my favorite song.....the lyrics thats what i really feel inside...

This hits me to the core. The sound of this song explains every feeling of loss I've experienced as a human being. It's tragically beautifully and heartbreaking...I cannot stop listening
A masterpiece of music played by proper artists and very talented trained musicians thank you Keane for keeping real music alive :-)
"when words fail, music speaks" Hans Christian Andersen
music like this brings me the deepest sense of nostalgia. idk how to explain it other than i feel outside my body when i listen. absolutely love and miss early 2000 classics like these
This band. This song. This nostalgia.
This song… doesn’t pull you up but pushes you further down to get yourself back up on your own. A piece of utter beauty and magnificence. Thank you keane
Why do I have to fly
Over every town up and down the line?
I'll die in the clouds above
And you that I defend, I do not love
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired
To be fighting
Guess I'm not the fighting kind
Where will I meet my fate?
Baby I'm a man, I was born to hate
And when will I meet my end?
In a better time you could be my friend
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired
To be fighting
Guess I'm not the fighting kind
Wouldn't mind it
If you were by my side
But you're long gone
Yeah you're long gone now
Where do we go?
I don't even know
My strange old face
And I'm thinking about those days
And I'm thinking about those days
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired
To be fighting
Guess I'm not the fighting kind
Wouldn't mind it
If you were by my side
But you're long gone
Yeah you're long gone now

London, astral protection, the convolutional neural network, the sudden quiet and entrance into the next phase of life, work soon and apprehension will dissipate, sometimes sad times come but optimism shines through
I love Tom singing from the most danceable, peaceful, romantic songs to the darkest and most reflective. In addition to her beautiful voice, the song's lyrics and melody bring emotion!

Yes!
Someone tell me what is making that sound because for me it defines the piece as the finest easy-listening to bless the ears of humankind.
the best comment about this song
I had already noticed this sound too, it's the sound that only plays on the left side until 0:39. I think it is just a synthesizer.
Ooh aka doo aka dey
If you watch the live version of this song from the O2 show in 2007, Neil Hannon reads out the poem this song is based on before it is played, and the sound you mentioned is being played in the background.. It's available on here if you search, really haunting sound
Obrigado por existirem amo vocês
A piece of my soul dies from pleasure every time I hear this song.
It’s just full of emotion and beauty for me.
"Keane - bedshaped", and "Bad Dream" are the best in the bunch. -2020
