My fave songs are "Help Me, "Free Man in Paris," "Chelsea Morning" and "Both Sides Now." She sings her wisdom and there's a nugget of truth in every song. A lesson in every line. Many musical artists write lyrics that are catchy, but don't make sense. Joni "talks story." She sings in a style that makes you think she's just sitting next to you having a chat. Yes, she's had a 'rather event-full' life (rather than saying "tragic"), but she is one of the strongest, most determined, but ever cathartically changing Women of all time. She has survived what would have killed or at least broken, many others. And she keeps on coming back. As you can tell, I've been in love with this woman, ever since I heard her sing for the first time in 1972. She is the greatest of many great Songwriter/Artists of ours or any time.
I WENT TO JAIL, NOT LONG AGO. FOR REASONS I PLEAD GUILTY TO. NOT FUN. THE MEMORIES OF ALL THE JONI MITCHELL MUSIC I LISTENED TO, IS THE ONLY THING THAT GOT ME THROUGH IT. THANK YOU, JONI.
I'm happy to hear she reunited with her daughter! As an Adoptee, I thank her for that, it's not easy, as I see it, from both sides; it had to be a huge factor in her overall mental and physical health. I never knew that about her life.... I get her song, Both Sides Now. I'm seeing things more clearly than I did in my earlier days; her songs clearly are her testament to her life. ❤️🥰
It is amazing that 'GRUNGE' did not create this video title: ''The Amazing Creative Triumphs over Adversity by JONI Mitchell '' . Thank you Joni for mentioning that you chose: '' To Change rather than to 'stay the same' -as an artist. This gives me more reason to look outward, than look inward. You are so loved and appreciated by so many people I speak with. You have raised the consciousness of this planet in such an amazing way. Thank you, Dk.
She grew up in Saskatoon at the same time as my mom. Mom would tell me about how they’d frequent the same parties and spots and that Joni was an amazing jitterbug dancer.
Joni Mitchell is one of the most amazing writers of poetry, lyrics, and an incredible musician and artist. Her music and lyrics speak to me in a most profound way. I am happy that she reunited with her daughter and grandchildren. I love joni❤️
I've looked at love from both sides now. That's a wonderful song that so many can identify with. She has known such struggle and and sorrow. Bless her survival of terrible struggle. She is brave and strong and she lived through such struggle and sorrow. Bless her music.
I heard when she entered a room of male musicians they would say oh she is gonna write a hit song about this! They were all in awe of her writing capabilities.
male vs female feminism that's what music and songwriting is about.... competition that's what creativity is about.... competition. ;) as an Artist... i agree! I don't look at the paintings of other Artists...to FEEL...SEE... Experience... I look at them ...as a competition... especially if they're painted by females! how DARE they enter a male dominated field! grrr.
I wouldn't say her life has been tragic but she has had a long life, ups & downs, health issues. Giving up her child back in the day & finally meeting again later in life went the way many of these reunions do. (Been there done that, was incredibly lucky they wanted me in their lives & held no grudges with our birth parents) Point being, you are meeting adult strangers & need to be prepared for that to go the way of any "blind date" type first meeting. I'm glad se & her daughter worked things out & she is still with us.
Lee Alred. In most cases I would imagine that the child is better off, but definitely not all cases. My wife definitely felt overall blessed, we know of two families right off the bat that were abusive in every form of the word. Unfortunately, some kids don't stand a chance from the start. Remember years ago potential adoptive and/or foster parents were not vetted as they are now. Not that is tragic. Stay safe.
"Up there's a heaven, down there's a town" is my favorite Joni Mitchell lyric (from This Flight Tonight). I bought her Night in the City album as a teenager and her Blue album after my marriage breakup in the 70s. Imo, she is a brilliant and creative "world" musician, in league with my other two favourites Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.
I love Joni Mitchell, her lyrics and music an inspiration to me at times, and she sings my own life at times too! Wishing you the best of health Joni, my favourite female Artist!
I am a life long Artist/painter. Raising my 3 kids as a painter with my oils on canvas. LOVE Joni AND her songs....often painting while playing her timeless music....
Hejira, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, and Shadows and Light are my favorite albums ... but damn, she, and Steely Dan ruled the 70's for me. Still listen to her, and rank her up with the best songwriters of the 20th century ... in the same class as Hal David / Burt Bacarach, Cole Porter, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Joni is a genius songwriter and singer! She is my contemporary and I still enjoy all of her music as well as Joan Baez, Judy Collins etc...Joni, take care of yourself! You are legendary!❤❤
Great video. However, there’s a bit too much focus on her love life and her male partners in my opinion. I haven’t seen many of these sort of videos about her male counterparts (For ex. Bob Dylan) where they place this much effort on their love escapades, and I’m sure they’re just as many. Mitchell is a legend with or without her romantic relationships, which I am sure all of you know. Other than that, I really enjoyed watching the video and even I as a fan learned some things I didn’t know about her before. Thank you!
Joni is the greatest songwriter and innovative musician of our time. Her genius shines through every note and word. She is and always will be my favorite. I am happy beyond that she is back out creating her magic. Love you! Stay well and happy trails~~~
I used to eat breakfast with Joni at a restaurant on Cornelia St. & W. 4th st. We were friends and part of the Village NYC scene back then. She was wonderful and fun to be with and always put out her cigarette when I asked her to. Joni is the real deal and so very talented. I wish I could speak to her again but I'm in NYC/NJ and She's in California....love to you Joni....Jack Baker NYC/NJ
OK, back in early 70,s Joni was hang,n with the heavy hitters in LA. the ( canyon )they were just kids Neil Young, David Crosby, and a new kid Jackson Brown on and off, and remember WereWolf of London Warren Savon or something like that, he was there too, an old house people in and out at all times, but everything was always kool, and me I,m a guy always hang,n around whenever I got the chance. Everything was music, and laugh,n, I,m about hot rods and Bikes so I didn,t really fit in, but I alway had a new joke or a bag of good stuff, so they put up with me.I wish that I had something that I could have added, I remember when they were putt,n together If I could remember my name, that was another world, look at us now.
Probably one of the greatest artist of our time poet painter composer and musician second to knowone with the voice from the heavens. The fact that Joni was a rebel at heart through her struggles in life and would be no slave to mediocrity like so many artist she gave us all some of greatest songs dancing to the beat of her own drum and knowone elses expectations. The best art isn't predictable thanx Joni you gave us more than you can ever imagine.
The slap was meant to be a projection that Joni wanted to slap herself. I don’t mean this to be derogatory; it been demonstrated how difficult and hard the separation from her daughter is.
In the seventies I play this lady's tracks every day along with Carol King and Kyle Simon, just love them all plus James Taylor ❤ pure magic, my kind of music not forgetting David Bowie 🇬🇧💞
Joni Mitchell..what a incredible woman who I’ve seen many years ago and although the venue was somewhat cold and uninspiring she was bang on top. Love her and I’m so glad she eventually found her daughter and made peace.
Joni survived a stroke and was able to witness two singing geniuses cover her work beautifully at Lincoln Center, the ultimate honor and praise. I don't see the "TRAGEDY" that's just click bait. Coyote bedded and moved on to Joni's delight, where's the tragedy? She enjoyed every cigarette, I suppose she'd rather be driving across the continent than being old, but how do you avoid that? by dying Young? "Where's That at?"
The loss of Joni on Spotify has hit me hard... other than Bob Dylan I've listened to her albums more times than any other artist, even the Beatles! Love her
I didn’t hear the name James Taylor until the end I understood that Carly Simon’s song No Secrets was about her angst about knowing of his love affair with Joni. They were also totally loved up when backing Joni on Blue.
I once read an article that described her as one of the world's last great smokers. Gordon Lightfoot is another great Canadian music talent with a cigarette habit looking rough these days. Those cigs will get you eventually. If they don't kill you outright they will rob you of your general health and make your later years less than they could have been.
Loved her from the "get go" back in the very early 1970's! Never saw her in concert, but bought most of her albums! Still have them! "Clouds" was my favourite, but "Court & Spark" is a close second! I was concerned about her health when she disappeared from the scene so abruptly in 2015? It was difficult trying to get news of her well-being during that period! My own wife died of a brain aneurysm, and I know that they are frequently fatal! Joni is lucky to be alive, believe me!
I have performed a few of her songs. Not easy to sing; her voice can do things others find challenging. She is also interesting to watch in performance. I have mixed feelings about her life choices, but why are they anyone’s business?
I have always loved Joni Mitchell and still do. Her thinking and music, and art. I love it all ever since I was a little girl. My aunt and the family would sing and play alot of her music in my grandfather's music studio. Guitar playing and singing was the greatest 😊💗
Before she became well known, Buffy Ste Marie, already famous, carried a cassette of Joni's works everywhere she went, in order to share her music more widely. It worked! Mitchell wrote the forward to Ste Marie's biography crediting Buffy for her assistance in helping bring hers, Joni's music to the attention of the wider public.
Sang and played "Both Sides Now" in Church on my Ovation 1612 back in 1982, such a beautiful song. My Dad passed away 20 years ago but in his latter years he became a huge Joni fan and I now have all of the CD's be had bought of her early music. She is incredibly talented, excellent showcase of her life Grunge, much I did not know. Certianly a turbulent and in many ways tragic life, pity about her cigarette addiction, which never allows anyone to age well.
Oh, Wow, she certainly HAS had a long and interesting and often difficult life.....I do LOVE her music and admire her courage.....And....sad to see her smoking a cigarette in that last clip......Come On, Joni.......Anyway,,,,,keep Singing!!
I named my daughter Joni, THAT'S how much I loved Joni Mitchell. I played Hejira in my 70 SS Chevelle on an 8 track!! I'm dating myself for sure! She's the best no doubt.
I love driving and belting out "Blue" songs! Never knew Little Green was about the daughter she gave up. Her lyrics tho... and of course the one of a kind voice.
always love to gaze at great beauty, and Joni is an example of that. I fell in love w/her even before 'the Last Waltz'. and her music is a treasure. I remember when 'Big Yellow Taxi' was a huge hit. yes, I'm ancient.
I love the scene in 'Message to love', where she reads the riot act to 600,000 unruly fans who thought 3 bucks was robbery for an 'Isle of Wight' ticket, which apparently was good for 3 days. she is visually upset, and it's sincere.
@@colinmcnab6145those were the days. sounds as if you were there .y' mean like Woodstock? but hey must have at least sold 10 or 12 IOW tickets. man, that film is fantastic!
I was at the Isle of Wight on the stage not 20' from her when she premiered some of the Blue album. Prior that summer she had been staying at the caves in Matala on the island of Crete where she pened Cary and maybe some others from Blue. Things started to get out of control during her set. A crowd of over half a million can be a very vicious animal to control. Unlike Leonard Cohen and the Angel choir who came on some time around 2 AM, Joan's set was during the day. Some guy took the microphone from her piano and was quickly escorted off stage. The crowd didn't like that as he was calling for the Walls to be torn down and the concert be declared free. Right then a poor girl with no clothes on jump on stage and was able to divert some of the Focus of Joan. I know this because I was the one sitting in front of the speakers and behind the girl laying in front of me with a disgusted look on my face staring into the no taste cameras. This gave Joan time to compose herself and tell the audience that they were behaving like tourist and show respect for the performers. It's all there, the DVD is called Message of Love. I'd be driven out out of the US by the draft and had been on the road for 18 months. I made it from San Francisco to Luxembourg to Kathmandu and back home. Wouldn't trade it for the world. She used to lullaby me to sleep "Song to a Seagull" 1968.

Very nice lady. I waited on her in a Tea room where I was working part-time probably somewhere around 2005. Normally I don’t ask for autographs but this one time I did. She happily complied and tipped me really well.

I WENT TO JAIL, NOT LONG AGO. FOR REASONS I PLEAD GUILTY TO. NOT FUN. THE MEMORIES OF ALL THE JONI MITCHELL MUSIC I LISTENED TO, IS THE ONLY THING THAT GOT ME THROUGH IT. THANK YOU, JONI.
Hejira was my pandemic album and helped me get through the lockdown.
Not bad for being a polio survivor
My dad used to sneak me into the Louis Riel coffeehouse in Saskatoon when I was in high school, to watch Joni perform. Put stars in my eyes.
I always have love her music , songwriting and paintings ! Exceptional one of kind lady!❤
I heard when she entered a room of male musicians they would say oh she is gonna write a hit song about this! They were all in awe of her writing capabilities.
male vs female
feminism
that's what music and songwriting is about.... competition
that's what creativity is about.... competition.
;)
as an Artist... i agree!
I don't look at the paintings of other Artists...to FEEL...SEE... Experience...
I look at them ...as a competition... especially if they're painted by females!
how DARE they enter a male dominated field! grrr.
A truly genius artists that not only put it on the canvus but also wrote it on our hearts and souls
Big Yellow Taxi has been a personal favorite for a LONG time
"they paved paradise and they put up a parking lot"
yet another woman I have loved from afar... and still do
overcoming our difficulties is NOT tragic... it's what people do... it makes us... beautiful
have implys past tense... it's not... still love her... lately
We all do what we have to do. That child was better off. I was given away at birth and I drew the golden ticket with my adoptive parents.
I shouldn't have got on this flight tonight
Was never a fan but I appreciate her struggle in life and praise her for being her and pushing through
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Amen there
i lived through all of that, never picked up on the serious mental health and psychological issues she had, i wish her all the best,
Brilliant, talented, very attractive woman who cannot not be held back. I like her and her work.
I have always liked Joni Mitchell. She's a legend of the 60s 70s.
She's a legend of the ages.
20th century? Try one of the best singer songwriters in history.
I was first introduced to her from the 1969 movie "Alice's Restaurant" where she sings "Stories for Aging Children" during a snowy funeral outside.
@A. Fox The snowy funeral scene is quite frankly the only scene I ever liked about the movie. The rest is forgettable.
Was für eine tolle Frau. Hat sich zurück gekämpft und singt wieder . Bravo
My analyst told me, " is on my list of fav's. There's only one Joni, and she's a legend
The song is called Twisted just an fyi
Joni Mitchell..what a incredible woman who I’ve seen many years ago and although the venue was somewhat cold and uninspiring she was bang on top. Love her and I’m so glad she eventually found her daughter and made peace.
She has a beautiful voice.
HAD.
She kept on going no matter what. An inspiration to many🌻
It's joni mitchell. We already know it's gonna be tragic. We are prepared for that. Greetings from Ahwahnee.
♥️
I'm so thankful for everyone's respect and honor given to Joni Mitchell.
Joni Mitchell: One of the greatest artist 👩🎨 of the 20th century.
The loss of Joni on Spotify has hit me hard... other than Bob Dylan I've listened to her albums more times than any other artist, even the Beatles! Love her
She should have kept her music on Spotify. Her “protest” was pointless.
who cares, bob too..no one listens to them let alone remember who they were. no disrespect intended
@@mikemiller659 lol that's just not true though is it?
@@mikemiller659 you live under a rock?
@@mikemiller659 The 10,000 people at the last Newport Folk Festival might disagree...
I didn’t hear the name James Taylor until the end I understood that Carly Simon’s song No Secrets was about her angst about knowing of his love affair with Joni. They were also totally loved up when backing Joni on Blue.
Prince said she was his favorite musician
She's been one of the most important female music artists within the past decade. What I like about her, is her sense of humor and sweet personality.
DGray78. Why only the past decade?
Congratulations you stayed true to the title of your thumbnail. I had no idea her life before success was that hard.
She smoked heavily and never quit, contributing to her ill health and the loss of her voice. I enjoyed her music tremendously.
I once read an article that described her as one of the world's last great smokers. Gordon Lightfoot is another great Canadian music talent with a cigarette habit looking rough these days. Those cigs will get you eventually. If they don't kill you outright they will rob you of your general health and make your later years less than they could have been.
She did quit in 2015 after her aneurism
@@wirlypearl6785 Closed the barn door after the horses got clean away.
she's made me cry for years, delightful tears..... love, flowers and sparkles to you Joni.
HEY Rod....I also have this Morgellons,,,a butt-kicker for sure,,,
So sorry about your wife....Gode Bless...
God bless her for not letting her disability hold her back, wish I could do more but my situation is a bit more difficult.
I have performed a few of her songs. Not easy to sing; her voice can do things others find challenging. She is also interesting to watch in performance. I have mixed feelings about her life choices, but why are they anyone’s business?
@@leannaloomer6090 Thats awesome that you are keeping her alive through performing some of her songs. God bless ya! ❤
So inspirational to me in my growing up years; and now I stand in sheer admiration of her many accomplishments and longevity....
Great video! Joni's a remarkable musician.
You are a gem Joni. A true artist with a truly Canadian flair and heart. Luv u forever.
I named my daughter Joni, THAT'S how much I loved Joni Mitchell. I played Hejira in my 70 SS Chevelle on an 8 track!! I'm dating myself for sure! She's the best no doubt.
Actually I loved "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" much better than her earlier works, "Harry's House" was a fav along with the title song.
I agree. That album got worn out. I still have it.
I bought her Blue album for my car and love the songs and the ideas expressed.
Your car likes music? Far out!
I love driving and belting out "Blue" songs! Never knew Little Green was about the daughter she gave up. Her lyrics tho... and of course the one of a kind voice.
She has face challenges through her life head on and is amazing! I love her drive, spunk and she has a beautiful soul!
always love to gaze at great beauty, and Joni is an example of that.
@@tonym994 Never payed to get into the Isle of Wight festival the fence got pulled down.
@@Waltzenfree I'm envious. especially since TheWHO and Jimi Hendrix, Joni, the doors and so forth were there. only saw the 'Oo and TEN YEARS AFTER couple years later, both twice.
Transcendental. Any album after Court and Spark is under appreciated.
Interesting facts I had not heard before. We shared the same Producer, Henry and the same birthday. I too love music and have written and composed music. I adore Joni❤
When I think of Joni Mitchell and Her music and all those songs, the one I love the Best and can relate to her is "Blue Motel Room" That is Joni...
Very nice lady. I waited on her in a Tea room where I was working part-time probably somewhere around 2005. Normally I don’t ask for autographs but this one time I did. She happily complied and tipped me really well.
Amazing backstory for her music. Thanks for posting
