I'm so pleased that Brandy Carlile has picked up the baton and is carrying it forward. We love you, Joni.
Joni Mitchell is the G.O.A.T. That's all. She's taken the art form of lyric writing and chords to new levels of emotional language. She makes you 'think' as she questions life itself. We need the reminder right? The world has become embroiled in blotting out these deeper questions and lives only for perceived immediate pleasure. Joni dug deep and continues to. She sure was a humbling discovery to my own music. At first she left me feeling hopeless, like what's the point even trying? Then I figured we all have our stories and perspectives so we are all valuable musical co creators. My entry into Joni's world was her album The Hissing Of Summer Lawns- the lyrics floored me, made my head spin. Brilliant. This was Prince's favourite Joni album, he said this album made him want to be a songwriter.

I really started to appreciate Elton as a person with the interview he did on Elvis Costello's show five or so years ago. He told some great stories of the days before he was successful. Having said that, EC is much better at this interviewing thing than Elton. who seems uncomfortable and always looking at his notes. But EC is a lyricist and EJ isn't, so it kind of makes sense that EJ would have a tougher time.
I love them both and was privileged to be a fan of both their music. Elton John's music got me through my teenage years along with Stevie Wonder but I've always loved Joni Mitchell. She has One of the best female voices I've ever heard in my life. What a privilege to see both my music idols in the same room talking with each other. ❤
God, Joni has improved immensely since her aneurysm. I already knew she was tough as nails, and her presence here just proves it. And good lord...I was in tears watching most of the Newport Folk Festival performance, especially when Joni picked up the guitar again. I never imagined in my wildest dreams I would get to see that on TH-cam, in this time. Joni feels, in many ways, like a monument of music, hardly just a person
She said that she’d to learn how to walk & talk again after the aneurysm & she had to teach herself to play guitar again! She is the most amazing person .
I cried too when I saw the Newport videos. I was with some friends on a weekend getaway and was trying to interest them in it, trying to say, hey man she is an icon, look at this! But they didn't care as much as I did. Joni was my soul when I was growing up, so yeah, I was fan-girling all over the place.
Joni is the real deal. She is such a treasure not only in Canada, but around the world. She is a musical genius and is so true to herself. Happy to see that she gets the recognition she deserves. Kudos too to Sir Elton for such a great interview. Love them both!!! ❤️❤️
He's got a solidly good heart, understands emotional pain and honesty and has lifted up many artists in despair or on the edge. In many respects his ability to communicate directly has eclipsed his musical career. We don't know the circumstances here and nor should we. It's enough that they're so happy just being together and willing to let us in.
Elton John seems like a good guy I don't like how famous rich people seem obsessed with jewellery and cars and ridiculously expensive clothes ..stuff like that though. I get that they've earned their money and who wouldn't wanna live a good lifestyle but when there are people in the world with literally nothing ..I dunno just gets to me a bit.
Love how Joni laughs when Elton gushes but doesn't, like sooo many people (especially women), feel the need (or requirement) to compliment Elton back. Then again, Joni is jnlike any other person. She is the epitome of *unique.* ❤️
People in their right minds who have their egos in check don’t always take flowery compliments so easily, because they know that they’re human, too, and not always deserving of complete and undying hero worship. Joni Mitchell knows she’s a human being with flaws, but she’s also a truly brilliant lady, musically, artistically, and creatively. Her song lyrics are like wise, beautiful poetry. She’s one of my heroines. And she would probably want to laugh at that, too, but she totally deserves the appreciation, admiration, and accolades, doesn’t she? ❤💎💗
Finally the recognition she deserves! Not too early! Nearly 70 and reminiscing my whole life with her songs , tears and joy in my eyes ! Thanks for living at the same time like this extraordinary artist- JONI FOREVER ❤
Thank the heavens for the two of them. Any musician, young or old, could expand their grasp of melody, harmony and rhythm just by spending some time figuring out what these two geniuses have gifted us in their recordings.
I get so frustrated with my home state and threaten to leave it one day... then I listen to Joni sing "California" from Blue and just remember how I feel when I go somewhere else for a while and come home. She's such an amazing artist and I'm so glad a new generation is discovering her (plus us long time fans being reminded again).
Hissing of Summer Lawns is just a masterpiece. That record blew my mind when I first heard it many years ago and I continue to find new things in it every time I listen. Beautiful, confronting and wonderful.
1976, Summerland, California... I'm 24 and blasting the album so loud in my VW bus (driving thru the neighborhood) that my buddies wife asked me why I was being so silly :) Better than drugs... Joni's music
Totally...and it took me years to find out what that title meant (I thought it was to do with snakes) - then when I found out, I just thought genius and is now embedded in my mind
I love Elton. I enjoy listening to him speak as much as I enjoy hearing him sing. His is a voice of understanding and intelligent compassion. I think he's been to and through some dark valleys and that's why I think, despite his success and fame, he seems so down-to-earth and real. Joni's thoughtful conversation is just delightful. Anyway, thank you, Elton. With love from your friend, the madman across the water
Joni I have lived w/ your words as a guiding light since Song to a Seagull...so many times in my 65 yrs I have recited your lines! "you brush against a stranger & you both apologize" how often this happens & I always think of Joni, "oh sour grapes cuz you lost your heart", Joni there are MANY GREAT woman singer/song writers esp in the 60s...kinda where it all started, but you my dear are the CREAM of the CROP! you were just ... more ...? ...EVERYTHING! thank Ms Joni for being my friend, sister, therapist and giving me years of enjoyment!
Sir Elton John and Joni Mitchell two of the great ones of our time! Thank you for sharing this wonderful video! Thank God for musicians music is indeed the universal language of the soul. 💕🌟💫
Love isnt enough to desribe my LOVE for Joni. Her music has been my companion for over 35 years. It makes me happy, it makes sad and makes me cry. I adore her. So glad she is a part of my life and she will continue to be so. A Beautiful, Talented, Human Being.
Bit distracted by the constant looking down and shuffling of papers, and he didn't seem to pay much attention to her answers, but his manner was suitably deferential!
I agree he did a very good job of interviewing her. his shuffling papers and looking down did not bother me because I know he is not a professional interviewer who has a lot of experience… So I just viewed it as that, plus also that Elton is a quirky personality
Joni Mitchell got a lot of young women (including me) through the teenage years. Still listening to Joni. She was amazing. She reinvented herself many, many times. So beautiful. Loved her album covers which she painted. The album Blue should be heard by everyone at least one time.
She's a truly magnificent woman .....a talented and exceptionally cultured and intelligent person ....it's a real pity that there aren't more female singer- songwriters like her
Joni Mitchell has been a very special figure of our time. A very special lady who has written one of the most beautiful songs that my ears have been able to hear in my 66 years of existence on this planet Earth. Thank you Mr. Elton John. For that get together and interview with this beautiful and wonderful lady. Once again, thank you. May God bless you both.
As much as I (like everyone) love Blue, Hejira is absolutely my favorite Joni album and one of my tops of all time. Poetry, intimacy, haunting melodies. Loved this interview by two giants.
I agree, I bought Blue on its first release & the self°indulgent self°examination gets tiresome & whiny. But Hejira always keeps a timeless quality for me ~ imo
Me too. I will never get tired of Blue, and I think it is one of the greatest albums of all time, but there is something almost indefinably special about Hejira. The title track, in particular, hypnotizes me, it takes me away from wherever I am to a quiet, quite mystical place, and the lyrics of that song as so deeply embedded within me that they just randomly appear in my head from time to time without warning. It's a work of art within a work of genius.
"When we had the Joni Jams"! This is a brilliant combination with a remarkable synergy between them! And Elton is absolutely correct when he says "Both Sides Now" at her appearance at Newport is spot on. Her voice, the slowed tempo, and the passage of time lent such a gravitas to the song, and it was as if someone was looking back on their life with a world weariness and a different perspective not only of the lyrics but of their life.
Watching Elton john interview and converse with Joni Mitchell was so wonderful. Her home, her stories are so down to earth. Sweet and serene. Two amazing people
A very very special interview and sharing between two musical icons on planet Mother Earth. Thank you for being you. Thank you so very very much, and for being part of my life. Peace & Love❤️🌸
That interview was different. The story’s Joni told were so moving. With a child’s laughter. A lovely experience all the way around. Thank you both. 🌸🌸🌸
Great interview. Joni Mitchell is amazing. I'm in a women's choir I we learned and sang"Help Me" in 4-part harmony. Our choir mistress arranged it and she is amazing. When you can sing one of Joni's songs you feel so accomplished. May you live and healthy Joni! You too Elton!
"She had a safety pin holding her sweater together." "She had a red sash..." This is how Joni Mitchell's visual world turned each song into a picture for us, it was another dimension in music. She sees that way, and she writes music that way. We enter her songs because we can see them.
One extra detail I liked about this interview; I'm so happy for Brandi Carlile... both music legends and her biggest heroes saying lovely things about her. (so deserving btw) .. .. I bet this interview made her very happy ... I remembered from her book and interviews how difficult is to get acknowledgement and a compliment from Joni :)
Us Baby boomers were lucky to have experienced both legends in their prime back in the early 70s. I was born in 1955 and was a teenager back then. Thank goodness 😎.
Just love it so much when 2 of my favorites 🤩 Joni Mitchell & Elton John - talk about their 🎵 🎶 musical highs...many times, I have "drafted" behind trucks on the highways, driving from Milwaukee to Saskatoon. 🇨🇦 One day, having ☕ a coffee outside a Broadway Avenue cafe in downtown Saskatoon with a friend, his little boy spotted Joni sitting alone at a table outside; he ran & quickly pulled up a bunch of flowers 💐 & handed them to Joni! She smiled: & that moment stays in my mind as clear as yesterday. Her music has shaped my life as it has so many others, as she narrated so many painful & joyous experiences of this life & love.
Many of her other songs were picked up by other artists, and when David Crosby saw her playing at the Gaslight South in Florida, and took her to LA helping her get a management and record deal. I was at her concert in 1998, She finally got a chance to sing "Woodstock" at the site of the 1969 festival at 1998's 'A day at the Garden'. She released her debut album Song to a Seagull (also sometimes known simply as Joni Mitchell) and as she toured built up a bigger and bigger profile, leading up to the release of Clouds in 1969, which went to number 31 in the charts, and Joni had most definitely arrived. Tell me Anne, did you ever had the opportunity to see her perform live on stage ?

This was a terrific interview between two music legends and to be honest, it was a pleasure to see Sir Elton so incredibly humbled in Miss Mitchell's presence. Both Sides Now has always been a favorite song but the remake with the orchestra and the slowed-down tempo somehow clarifies moments of truth to anyone who has loved and lost. I feel very privileged to have lived in a time where I have enjoyed the meaningful music of both Joni and Elton. Rock on!
@@aquamarine99911sometimes our thoughts go faster than we can type, I’m sure Sugarmaple thought of many more Canadian musicians, you yourself forgot Anne Murray and Celine Dion, Ashley MacIssac, Natalie MacMaster, members of Bachman Turner Overdrive, Triumph, Guess Who, the list goes on so omitting some that are special to you or me or anyone, is perfectly okay. The thing I love about her interviews, so long as the interviewer isn't a knob, is how generous she is with it. Also, it puts a lot of the critisisms of her 'difficultness'' in perspective, in that it really actually is no-frills integritry. And who says we smokers don't age gracefully? Joni is doing a great job of it.
A new level of respect to Sir Elton! Although I'd never been a huge fan, this series has opened my eyes (and ears) to his music pedigree; I'm listening now!

Thank you, Elton. Joni. I’ve been in love with Joni since the late sixties. Her expressions through music and words are the most touching and beautiful anyone has ever offered our world. Thank you, so much, for allowing us to see and hear her again. This was absolutely a magnificent experience.
When my daughter got to a certain age in her teenage years i started playing Joni's albums for her on extended car rides to vacation destinations - and I would tell her about Joni, what i knew of her life - I believed it was important to share her music and life story with my daughter - to expand her development and perspective - happy i did! Much love and respect to two brilliant artists - Joni and Elton.
As a kid i was sent to summer band-camp and one of the songs we had to learn was 'Both Sides Now'. At that time (being 13yrs.or so) i had no idea who Joni Mitchell was but the memory of a large room of kids attempting this on various instruments was really magical. I still have vivid memories of this.
Joni playing with the LA Express on Miles of Aisles was incredible, but the Shadows & Light band (Metheny, Mays, Jaco, Brecker & Alias - with a little help from The Persuasions) was out of this world. Sadly, we've lost most of them now. But the album and the concert video are two things I will never get tired of.
"You made Blue, then you made Court and Spark....". Why does everyone seem to overlook For The Roses? It's such a brilliant album and a key transition into Joni's move towards more jazzy influenced territory.
Every album from Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, For The Roses, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Court and Spark, Hejira, Don Juans Reckless Daughter, Mingus...others (Turbulent Indigo) (Miles of Aisles) ... They are different and ALL masterpieces that need not be compared. Each one stands as it's own statement. IMPO.
Totally agree with you Rich, I have often wondered the same thing, it's my favorite of hers; 'Blonde in the bleachers'; why does no one ever mention that song? The whole album is a Masterpiece.
I know, Rich-I wonder the same thing--not to take anything away from her other albums-but for me, “For The Roses” stands alone both musically and emotionally. I still remember the first night I had that album in 1973 and played one side, then the other, and repeated that for hours and hours until the morning light-it transported me. ‘Blonde in the Bleachers’ moving into ‘Woman of Heart and Mind’ is one of the most incredible album moments I can ever recall. But Yes, Rich, for some reason, I have heard several times people refer to “Blue”, then “Court and Spark”-& I don’t get why they leave out “For The Roses”. Sorry to go on & on-but when I saw your comment, I couldn’t be still……….thank you, Rich. P.S.-Joni might be the greatest artist of our time-poetry, music, painting-she stands alone.
"both Sides Now" is probably one of the best songs written in the 20th Century. Joni Michell is also a national treasure.

Such beautiful souls....people who made music in the 60s and 70s just seem to be in a class of their own.....2 legends.
Thank you for this wonderful video! Just love her!
Joni is a LEGEND…..and Elton is a Legend too …..great artists forever
I didn’t know she’d had an aneurysm, just that she was ill. Now i know! I’m glad she has recovered so well
I cried too when I saw the Newport videos.
How can you not love Elton?? He is such a source of joy in a weary world! And Joni is Joni. We are blessed with all she has done and who she is.
Beautifully expressed!
@@dominicaaaaa5547 Are you aware of the amount of time and money Elton has put into finding a cure for aids?
@@OneOfUsHere no I'm not but if he has then good on him
Love how Joni laughs when Elton gushes but doesn't, like sooo many people (especially women), feel the need (or requirement) to compliment Elton back.
I wish I could sit down with Joni in her house and just listen to her telling stories and I would die of joy.
I have listened to "Blue" several times a year for 50 years. A timeless great work of art.
Her memory is remarkable for detail. That’s why she’s such a good lyricist.
Finally the recognition she deserves! Not too early! Nearly 70 and reminiscing my whole life with her songs , tears and joy in my eyes ! Thanks for living at the same time like this extraordinary artist- JONI FOREVER ❤
One living musical legend interviewing another living musical legend... This was beautiful 🙏💖🕊️
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Thank the heavens for the two of them. Any musician, young or old, could expand their grasp of melody, harmony and rhythm just by spending some time
figuring out what these two geniuses have gifted us in their recordings.
I'm 24 and blasting the album so loud in my VW bus (driving thru the neighborhood) that my buddies wife asked me why I was being so silly :)
Better than drugs... Joni's music
Totally...and it took me years to find out what that title meant (I thought it was to do with snakes) - then when I found out, I just thought genius and is now embedded in my mind
I'm going to listen to it right now. Thanks for reminding me.
I could never understand why it was slagged off. "The Jungle Line" is like nothing before it.
@@johannesbols57 Those pounding drums and the weird bass as just amazing.
With love from your friend,
the madman across the water
this is an amateur interview relying on notes
Joni I have lived w/ your words as a guiding light since Song to a Seagull...so many times in my 65 yrs I have recited your lines! "you brush against a stranger & you both apologize" how often this happens & I always think of Joni, "oh sour grapes cuz you lost your heart", Joni there are MANY GREAT woman singer/song writers esp in the 60s...kinda where it all started, but you my dear are the CREAM of the CROP! you were just ... more ...? ...EVERYTHING! thank Ms Joni for being my friend, sister, therapist and giving me years of enjoyment!
She's such an amazing artist. "Amelia" moves me to tears every time.
"Then your life becomes a travelogue of picture postcard charms..."
Brilliant, ‘Hejira’ is such a breezy and euphonic record.
"Maybe I've never really loved I guess that is the truth..I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitudes"..what a self observation..
Human emotions nailed
The live version OMG, only discovered it last year
@@j.c7719 My favorite of her records!
Happy tears for Joni. Her sheer will to overcome when nature tries to take her down is something to behold.
So privileged we are to see these two music legends together. Beir bua, Joni!
😊
Sir Elton John and Joni Mitchell two of the great ones of our time!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video!
Thank God for musicians music is indeed the universal language of the soul. 💕🌟💫
Well said❤
Joni is THE greatest artist ever to have lived in ANY genre. Amazing to still see and hear her so full of life.
❤
Definitely!!
You would have to be mentally ill to think that.
She's an excellent and inspiring human. True, unabashed authenticity. It's beautiful to behold.
Love isnt enough to desribe my LOVE for Joni. Her music has been my companion for over 35 years. It makes me happy, it makes sad and makes me cry. I adore her. So glad she is a part of my life and she will continue to be so. A Beautiful, Talented, Human Being.
This is one of the best interviews of a legendary musician that I’ve ever seen. Amazing job Elton!!
Bit distracted by the constant looking down and shuffling of papers, and he didn't seem to pay much attention to her answers, but his manner was suitably deferential!
are you mad ?
No
What
I agree he did a very good job of interviewing her. his shuffling papers and looking down did not bother me because I know he is not a professional interviewer who has a lot of experience… So I just viewed it as that, plus also that Elton is a quirky personality
Joni Mitchell got a lot of young women (including me) through the teenage years. Still listening to Joni. She was amazing. She reinvented herself many, many times. So beautiful. Loved her album covers which she painted. The album Blue should be heard by everyone at least one time.
She also got a lot of young men (including me) through the teenage years.
Wonderful stuff❤️🙏🥲
I knew she'd make it back. So many holding a space, with their prayers and great wishes. The power of collective good.
She's a truly magnificent woman .....a talented and exceptionally cultured and intelligent person ....it's a real pity that there aren't more female singer- songwriters like her
it is SO cool to see Joni & Elton together...& to see how well Joni is after EVERYTHING she's been through !!
❤
Joni Mitchell has been a very special figure of our time. A very special lady who has written one of the most beautiful songs that my ears have been able to hear in my 66 years of existence on this planet Earth. Thank you Mr. Elton John. For that get together and interview with this beautiful and wonderful lady. Once again, thank you. May God bless you both.
Hi 👋, thanks for loving and supporting my mom music🎵🎼🎸 May God bless you and your family🙏🥰🎼
As much as I (like everyone) love Blue, Hejira is absolutely my favorite Joni album and one of my tops of all time. Poetry, intimacy, haunting melodies. Loved this interview by two giants.
I agree, I bought Blue
on its first release &
the self°indulgent self°examination gets tiresome & whiny.
But Hejira always keeps a timeless quality for me ~ imo
@@airmark02 I take it you were a teenager when Blue was released then ?
@@Jcrash71 Yes, back in the Vinyl era where phones booths & water fountains were a common occurrence...lol.
Yes, Hejira is my favourite too - Refuge Of The Roads is my all time favourite Joni song.
How precious it is to come across these 2 exquisite artists, thank you for sharing
Wow, an ambitous undertanking, would love to hear that
"She had a safety pin holding her sweater together." "She had a red sash..." This is how Joni Mitchell's visual world turned each song into a picture for us, it was another dimension in music.
Even Sir Elton admits how intimidating it is to sing her songs in her presence. Brandi did an entire album.
Love her, love her, love her! Thank you Joni for making my life so much better over the last 50 years. May you live forever xx
A timeless gem for sure..had me crackin up with: well you look like a sparrow yourself...tiny little french woman lol lol
Gag
Us Baby boomers were lucky to have experienced both legends in their prime back in the early 70s. I was born in 1955 and was a teenager back then. Thank goodness 😎.
Absolutely! 65 yo here💖👏
65 here too. I love Free Man in Paris. That was my song high school.
yup I’d rather be teenage then then now thas for sure hate to say it
Same age. Got my first Joni album in 1969 so a long time fan.
I am a little older than u. Not grateful.
Cause now closer to the grave.
Love Elton John and Joni Mitchell, what a grand pairing. Both are legends.
Court and Spark is my favourite Joni album. She really is a legend 🤩
Love them both since I first listened to them in the early 70s.
Her 'magnum opus', to b sure
Hi how are you doing?
Joni is a living legend. This is a treasure to watch!
Joni Mitchell and Elton John! This is amazing! And Joni's brilliance and artistry is unsurpassed. Two icons!

Thank you Elton John for this interview with an icon. In discussing Joni's recovery you're describing the power of music therapy. Lovely interview.

So glad to see her so happy, smiling and full of joy ! I loved her storytelling about what inspired the songs like that solo drive ... Very enjoyable! Her Newport was so inspiring and moving!
I feel privileged to have watched this. Thank you so much for making this happen.
Two great song writers, and musicians in conversation. Joni made a good recovery. Delighted that she is still with us.
Rock on!
Amazing, I love Joni, she looks beautiful. Her music is eternal beauty and poetry.

I am SO glad I was born when I was...I got to ride along with Joni on her journey

Yes!!! The most influential artists in my life ♥️🎶♥️
I always say that to people.. those were the best of times with real musicians playing best tunes that will outlast all genres
Wonderful, Joni is one of the greatest of all time -- I'm glad she's getting the recognition she so richly deserves.
I was so inspired when Elton spoke of her new voice & reinventing herself. It was such an epiphany for me. I named my daughter Joni due to my love of Joni Mitchell. What a great interview!! ❤️ 🎶
Hello my friend how's everything over there in Texas?
2:40 as a brandi carlile fan i have to say it’s so beautiful to hear 2 of her biggest heroes in the world speak so kindly about her❤
Elton and Joni? Wow. That is much music and song history and greatness in one room. Legends.
I must have played Miles of Aisles a million times. All of her work is just incredible. What an amazing artist she is! I am just thrilled she is still here with us to talk about her work.
2 of the greatest music composers of the 20th century
Joni is one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time. I could listen all day to her stories about her life and the musicians around her over her career. I hope someone writes it all down. Elton has captured a part.
A very special treat! It’s rare not only to see a Joni interview but to see a humbled Elton John. What an amazing moment in time and even sweeter that we all got the chance to see it. Brilliant!! Joni has been an a favorite since I was a child as well as Elton, who sings my wedding song. This was just wonderful to watch.

I'm surprised you GenXers even know about Blue
Two musical legends . Lovely.
Two of the best ever! Elton, who doesn’t need to take a back seat to anyone knows what a master she is. His love of music shines through his whole career. I love you both to death. Joni has made a couple of albums that to me are as good as it gets. She changed my life for the better. Thank you.
I have most of Joni's albums . " Blue " remains my favourite . It is an album I never tire of.
Hejira is simply a masterpiece and, alongside Shadows and Light, my most treasured album ever. Wonderful to see and hear Joni in such great form. Thank you for everything Joni and Elton. Will go check out the whole show now. Love from Australia 🇦🇺 🐨
This is Wonderful. Elton was So Excited to be with Joni. 2 Legendary Artists.
Thank you, Elton. Joni. I’ve been in love with Joni since the late sixties. Her expressions through music and words are the most touching and beautiful anyone has ever offered our world. Thank you, so much, for allowing us to see and hear her again. This was absolutely a magnificent experience.
Hi how are you doing?
Absolutely beautiful. My heart is filled with joy. Thanks Elton n Joni
Joni's Shadows and Light album, always great to listen to. Jaco and Pat Metheny in the rhythm section, so amazing. She's a genius.
So heart felt to see Joni Mitchell after 40 years. Sir Elton John I absolutely loved the interview. Thank you both 💖💓💖
The meeting of two beautiful musical minds. God bless you both 🙏
Giants. The two of them. What a pair of songbooks. True artists, for whom lyrics speak volumes.
"You made Blue, then you made Court and Spark....". Why does everyone seem to overlook For The Roses? It's such a brilliant album and a key transition into Joni's move towards more jazzy influenced territory.
@Tyler Wareham I think it was Prince's favourite album.
Summer Lawns and Don Juan's Daughter are her best IMO
P.S.-Joni might be the greatest artist of our time-poetry, music, painting-she stands alone.
she fills my heart, every time.
