  • A not so well known 90+ year old Winchester bolt action .22 caliber long rifle featured here ready for a day of plinking. These are bulletproof and can be passed on through many generations.

My Model 57 was given to me by my granddad when I was ten years old! I am now 72 and I love it. It is in very good condition with the Lyman peep sight.

This was my first .22 rifle. Loved it. Lots of target shooting and rats at the dumb. 1965 in New England when you could walk around town with your rifle and nobody would freak-out. A teenager could buy a box of ammo without any questions. Still, safety and proper gun handling was the number 1 priority. Those were the days!

Thank you so much for posting this video! The model 57 is a pretty obscure rifle compared to some of Winchester's more well-known firearms. We've had one in my family for a few generations (I think it originally belonged to my great uncle). It was left at our family's summer home in Colorado after he passed away. As far as I know, it was never left to anyone, so my family kept it in a vault in one of our cabins. Some relatives (mainly my dad) would take it out to the shooting range on our property every once in a while for a bit of target practice. That was the first gun I ever shot, so it really holds a special place in my heart. Unfortunately my dad passed away a few years ago, and I don't think anyone else in my family is interested in guns or target shooting, so that old rifle has been left in our family's vault and neglected in recent years. I sure hope no one sells it, I'd love to go back to our family summer home and see if I can save it and give it a home in my own private collection.

The model 56 was the sporter model manufactured at the same time. However, the 56 came in short and long rifle only models. It has the fewest numbers manufactured of all the Winchester 22's.

My grandfather had a model 57 with peep sights.

I think those were issued to our grandfathers back in the day.

@@MilsurpGarage Issued by whom? My grandfather was a NROTC officer who captained 2 different DEs during WWII. I know very little about his life before the war so it would be interesting to know more.

Louis Loutrel I just meant that grandfathers handed so many of these .22 bolt actions down to grandkids that it was if they were “issued” them in their younger days.

The same 5 and 10 round magazines were used in the Winchester model 52, 56, 57, 69, & 75. The original's with "Winchester" on the base have become scarce and very pricey these days!

Didn't they call the front sight,'the shark fin style'? Not sure what the part number was.

    • @MilsurpGarage

Yes, the Winchester 93B “shark fin” sight is very desirable, increasingly rare, and is sometimes fabricated and recreated.

John O'Malley Sure, I can help but that website won’t accept my log in credentials for some reason. I will email a few photos, tell me exactly what you need to see, then give me a few days. Might just do a channel video with what you need!

Do a search on gun broker to see what they’re selling for, then you can amend your search to list only “sold” items which will tell you what they actually sold for.
Additionally, you can match your examples up with examples in similar condition to yours
