  • HW. Cooey Machine and Arms Co. was founded in 1919 and their first firearm was the single shot Cooey Canuck. Ever farmer has at least 1 of these workhorse rifles. Today we are going to check out my very old (1940's) Cooey model 60 Hiawatha repeater .22 rimfire rifle. A great option for plinking, target shooting and pest control around the farm, gophers and such...
Over the years Cooey produced house brands “Eatonia” for Eaton’s, the largest department store in Canada, “Sure Shot” for Simpsons department stores and “Hiawatha” for McLeod’s western stores.
Want to thank a couple of great channels that inspired me to make this video‪@RonSpomerOutdoors‬ and ‪@hickok45‬

I shot my cooey repeater gifted to me by my father for the first time today. We had a rabid raccoon wandering around our farm. What a sweet -shooting rifle! We are in Ontario so its awsome to hear the history of it.

Hi Jimmy, nice video, I remember when I was a young guy living in the Bush with my family, my dad who was a trapper, traded some skins to get me my first rifle which was a Winchester 252. I remember I was so excited and the first thing I hunted was a Spruce hen. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

These are nice little rifles. I have a winchester stamped model 60. It was a birthday gift from my wife and inlaws, through a close friend whos buddy had one for sale. Sadly I lost my friend to cancer a few years later so this rifle is sentimental to me for several reasons. I also have the weaver mounts and optics. It is a very fun and reliable piece of history.

The 39 is a very nice beginner rifle for youth, first cooey i had ever shot, and will eventually buy one of my own. The fact that the bolt has to be pulled to cock the rifle even after it is chambered makes it a very safe rifle for youth. You really have to want that thing to fire. Hard to do it by accident. Not to mention, simple, accurate, and reliable.

I inherited a Cooey Model 60 from my grandfather over 25yrs ago. It never ejected brass right, even after stripping/cleaning. Ironically mt first rifle was an EAL .303 from my grandfather

Hey Jimmy. Great to hear the history behind the Cooey. I was unfamiliar with that one. I got into shooting at an early age starting with a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun followed by a Marlin Model 60 (.22) and then it just blossomed from there. I always wanted to hunt as a kid, but unfortunately hunting was not very popular in the area where I lived, (CT) and there were no family members/friends who hunted and could mentor me. It wasn't until I was in my early 20's that I connected with a buddy who grew up in the Adirondacks and took me deer hunting. Been doing it ever since over the last 30 plus years. As always, great job with the video scenes. Cheers! Michael

Hi Michael and thanks. I'm glad you found a hunting buddy. It definitely tastes better when you've harvested it yourself 👍🍺
I might try to do some hunting videos this fall 🤔

Nice well made rifles. One day my grandpa brought out a daisy bb gun, think I was around 11. My Grandpa made a circle on one of his red painted sheds on the farm, think he used a marker for the circle, we shot at that circle on his wooden shed and he gave me the gun, I got so good with it I could shoot flying grasshoppers when they were on the ground , stones and many birds, my cats were well fed. 30 years later u could still see the bbs still in the wood . My only regret is when the farm was sold to a landfill they tore all the buildings down and I wish I would have cut that area out of the shed. Always a good memory with my grandpa. Since then I hunt with many different weapons, if my grandpa never did that my life would be very different to this day.

Funny that my first shooting was an 870 also. Went out duck hunting with my dad when I was 12 (could have been younger) and then target practice with a .22. I cannot remember what kind of rifle it was. Like a Cooey with the tubular magazine, but semiauto. Anyway, good memories and traditions that are harder to pass along these days.

Awesome video, I love anything Cooey as it’s 100% Canadian. The Cooey 64 semi auto became the Lakefield, then became the Savage 64F we know today. So even though it doesn’t say Cooey on the barrel anymore, it’s still made in Lakefield Ontario and is a Cooey in Savage clothing. I bought one a few months ago and love it. I think a 64F would look good beside your model 60 😁. Cooey was affordable, durable, reliable and accurate. Very well made.

I have a Winchester (I am in Australia 🇦🇺) stamped Cooey model 60 that was handed to me in terrible condition, now restored a little different to how it was originally presented. Still shoots well though.

Great Video, Awesome sence of humor & funny comments. I had many good laughs. Very informative about this historically significant rifle. The movie Shooter brought me here. Also my & my 3 sons enjoyment of collecting fine older .22,s. I really like that this old beauty runs shorts too!!

@@JimmyMeatwhistle when I was around 16, my friends and I would load 22 shorts in the cooey and then shoot at a dead white pine way above all the other trees. After the Crack of firing, 2 or 3 seconds later you could hear the round hit the wood. We did that for fun. I miss the days when owning a guns and ammo.was so easy. The Liberals over the years took the fun out of everything.
