  • If you want to learn gunsmithing, you can learn it all right here because there are about 40 different things you can do to this old 22 and each one is going to teach you something about gunsmithing.
Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder of MidwayUSA, talks about The Model 67 Project.

I hope you all do more of these excellent gun smithing videos. Larry has such a nice way of explaining things and is clearly a master craftsman. I know he is a very busy guy but I would love to see more of this content.

Beautiful gun! I restored a 67. My biggest challenge was a suitable barrel. Every one I found was virtually a smoothbore ( no rifling left ). Finally decided to resleeve the best barrel I had. So why not? I had it sleeved in 17HMR. It's a beautiful gun! I get a lot of funny reactions when I pull out 17HMR ammo to shoot it! It took a lot of massaging to get it to extract the spent shells. So am I the only one who has a 67 in 17HMR?

i didn't even think to look for something like this, i have and old 67a sitting in the closet that my grandfather gave me and i used to shoot all the time when i was young... i think it would be quite fitting to dress the old girl up someday and pass it on through the generations

I have the 67A boys model. Was given to me by my father in 1963, and I will pass it down to my grandson. I’ve had many .22’s in my lifetime, but none as accurate than my 67A. If you can find one in decent shape, buy it! Excellent first gun for a young person.

Super information on how to. I am basically doing the same thing to old air guns. It's fun learning and afterwards the pride of a complete pellet gun that looks and shoots great. Y'all keep up the great work at Midway :)

Was the first rifle I ever owned. I bought it from brother's friend for $10.00. Way back in about 1972 when I was 14 years old. I used to go rabbit hunting with them and this rifle

  • @stephenland9361

There are so many older rifles out there, .22's and the various centre-fires, commercial sporters, military surplice rifles that have been 'sporterized', many of them in various states of disrepair that the 'learning material' available is vast. I'm not a gunsmith of any description but several members of my local Rod and Gun Club are very talented amateurs. (One past member was a professional.)
The things these people can do with what looks like a 'useless' rifle (or shotgun) are amazing. One member's passion was taking "Bubba guns" (very poorly sporterized milsurps) and turning them into genuine works of art. In Canada, the number of badly sporterized Lee-Enfields is staggering. If the barrel was still original and in good condition, he could restock it back to military specs. If the barrel was cut or badly worn, the rifle would undergo a full custom and beautifully done revision to a gorgeous express style sporter, still chambered in .303 British.
And no, he didn't give them away. Quality workmanship commands a commensurate price.

Was in my LGS today and saw a 67A on the Used Gun Rack. Sadly, the Hillbilly Gunsmith got his hands on it and crudely cut out the side of the Stock and also crudely installed some old Peep Sight. The top of the Receiver was ground down to allow the Peep-Sight to swing over the gun. What a sad example of a really nice .22. Had it not been for the Kitchen Table Gunsmithing, it would've been a nice gun and I'd have bought it.

I used to mow my "Grandy's" 2 acre yard every Sat. when I was 11 or 12 years old. His yard was what was left of "The Farm" after he sold his dairy farm to the city of Tyler for a water plant and after some land developers bought his land. He paid me $3.75 for the job that I did with a push mower.
It was about the end of Agust and time to go back to school; I finished the mowing and my dad was there to take me home. Grandy said, would you rather have that 22 { he kept the rifle hanging on the wall by the back door} or the money? I thought he was joking. I had already used it to shoot crows in his pecan trees and other things. Heck, I already loved her before she was mine.
Back then any kid could walk into any neighborhood store and buy a box of 22's for 50 cents. At times I would get my brother Doug to throw a bottle into the air and break it. { best I ever did was hitting an expended .410 shell in the air }]
One afternoon myself and some school friends { one with a car and DL at 14 yrs. old } went to the woods on the North side of Tyler TX to do some plinking and goofing off. I had shot nearly all my rounds at cans, bottles and skinny twigs just to see if we could hit them.
This rifle was my first experience at wood refinishing. I had sanded that rifle down and put some kind of shellac on it and made it look new. The more intimate I got with her the more I loved her. Well, late in the afternoon we were nearly out of bullets and Rick needed to go to work in his dad's meat market so we were walking out. We walked by this large pond and Don saw something that looked like either a large snake or a vine wraped around a stump in the pond.We were not sure so I shot at it to see if anything would happen. It was a snake and it was a big one. It unwound from the stump and started swimming, right toward us! In our mind we thought it was coming toward us because I had shot it. I shot my last 4 or 5 bullets at it while it was coming toward us. It came right up on shore but I was out of bullets. Ricky or Don found a long branch and held it down, my juices were pumping so I took my rifle and gave it an overhead swing and crushed the snakes head but also broke my beautiful Walnut stock and bent the receiving end of the rifle. I killed the one I loved and am now to emotional to go on about the yankee boy that had never seen a real snake. I am too sad to go on.

I got a model 67 when my grandfather passed away. It's a tack driver at 100 yards with the original weaver scope on it. It was manufactured between '37 and '44. I wouldn't sporterize mine like in this video though, better to keep the 27" barrel and just restore the existing stock and metal.

  • @ravibaba1107
    @ravibaba1107 6 ปีที่แล้ว

My dad bought mine in 1955 for $12. I was 7 y/o. He bought it for my birthday because id been relentlessly bugging him for a BB gun.
I wasn't allowed to carry it afield by myself until I was 12.
I haven't seen one for sale less than $175 for the past several yrs. at gun shops, pawn shops, or gun shows. Normal asking price for the standard 27" barrel/14" pull is $250.
I bought one with an impeccable stock, 90% blue trigger guard, and 95% chromed bolt for $175 this yr. for parts (crappy barrel that hangs spent brass although extractor/ejector is fine.)
I can tell someone messed with this piece before trading it in to gun shop as the rear sight elevator is put in backwards and there must've been an oversized bolt knob on it at one time because there is an indentation on the side of the stock where the stock knob now rests with a 1/4 inch spare space.
If you find one with good muzzle crown, decent patina, shoots straight, no rust, extracts and ejects for $250 or less, buy it.
Same goes for a Winchester 72A repeater!

My first gun when i was 9. when i first got my winchester the stock was junk so my family friend taught me hot to carve a new one and checker it, etc. Since then i've been fascinated with guns and improving them. Another good gun to alter is a mosin natant 91/30 for around the same price. Thing is you should know how to cut, crown and lap your barrel before messing with rifles you wanna sporterize.

But here is something else you should take in consideration. Rimfire ammo that is supersonic is accurate until it becomes subsonic. When the round becomes subsonic it gets hit with a supersonic shockwave. This eliminates the effective range of the round for accuracy. There are plenty enough energy there for the game I hunt with mine. Subsonic ammo comes out slower due to the longer rifling. And the longer barrel relaxes the gases release during ignition causing a lower audible signature.

  • @tamminicholson5060

Couldn't have said it better myself! You just have to get your hands dirty, and more importantly don't be so afraid to mess something up that you never get started. Just give it a go! Start by buying some basic tools, punches, 4oz hammer, sand paper, wood finish, cold bluing solution, etc. & have fun! Take stuff apart, see how it works. Clean stuff. Put stuff back together. Make mods. Before you know it your in the game.

Cutting the barrel!!! That longer bit of barrel makes subsonic ammo very quiet. Those longer barreled .22s are much quieter than the shorter barreled rimfires of today.

I have a Winchester Model 52B with a 28" barrel. Back in the late 1930's they were shooting 1 1/4" groups at 200 yards. So I'm just fine with both of my Winchester Model 67A and Model 67 that have the 27" barrel. Dutch1722 wrote these longer barrels help quit down the round and I agree. He wrote not a word about velocity so I'm not sure what was the point of Prieshoodagitator's comments about what Dutch1722 wrote.

I think that there really is a lot of learning to do with something like this, but I personally hate the way it looks in this video. I personally like my old guns to stay old, unless of course something has to be replaced for it to function. That’s just my personal preference on it though, and other than that, it is a beautiful gun simply because of all the effort put into it to freshen it up a bit.

I like your comment, but how many people nowadays know what a Packard even is, much less a Caribbean. I mean I do, but I'm into classics. Not complaining, it's just that your comment made me chuckle about how under-educated about everyday things today's young people are. And I agree with you, I wouldn't have changed up that rifle either.
