Do You Really Need To Wash Your Jeans?

  • You might have heard this odd advice from fashion gurus before - “don’t wash your jeans!” But why? Is it real advice, or just a prank pulled on unsuspecting, dim-witted denim rubes?

Here’s the thing: whether you’re wearing a pair of busted Levis or brand-new raw denim from some fancy boutique, your pants are part of a debate that designers and customers alike have been having for decades:
When should you wash your jeans? Do you need to wash them at all?
Let’s look at the basics. Denim is a kind of cotton with a twill textile weave. Check out this photo: in a twill weave, the thread called the weft - the crosswise yarn - passes under at least two warp threads - those are the lengthwise yarns.
In most jeans, only these warp threads are dyed, meaning that these other threads, the weft threads, remain white. That’s why blue jeans are white inside.
That blue shade on the warp threads comes from a dye called indigo. Unlike some other dyes, indigo doesn’t penetrate the cotton. Instead, it sits atop the yarn, on the surface of each thread.
Over time, molecules of indigo chip away, causing the fabric to fade.
This fade makes each pair unique, so much so that the FBI analyzes denim patterns when tracking criminals. The more you wear a pair, the more broken in they become.
You’ll see the appearance of fade patterns. Whiskers on the front, honeycomb patterns behind the knees and so on. And here’s where it gets - oh, wait. Wrong show.
Not all jeans are created equally. Let’s divide them into two rough categories - washed and raw. Washed denim is just that - washed after dyeing, to make the fabric softer and reduce shrinkage.
Sometimes washed denim is artificially distressed to give it a broken-in or worn look. The fading of raw denim, on the other hand, happens naturally over time depending on the daily activities of the person wearing the jeans.
The longer you go without washing these jeans, the more pronounced fading patterns will become, personalizing the pants.
Once you have a pair of jeans, you’ll hear numerous pieces of advice about caring for them. Most of this doesn’t apply across the board.
For example, companies like Hiut denim will ask you to wait at least 6 months before washing your jeans, because if you wash them early the indigo will wear off uniformly, robbing you of those unique fade patterns.
And this is the heart of the whole “to wash or not to wash” question. The longer you go without washing a pair of jeans, the more pronounced the wearing pattern becomes. You’ll also preserve the indigo, as well as the stiff texture of the fiber.
But what happens if you don’t wash them? Won’t bacteria pile up, turning your lower hemisphere into a plague-ridden cesspool of filth?
Not necessarily. In 2011 a microbiology student at the University of Alberta went, get this, 15 months without washing his jeans. He tested their bacterial content, along with the bacterial content of another pair that had been washed about two weeks beforehand. He found almost no difference.
So if you can’t wash them, what do you do to keep your blue jeans clean? You’ll hear some crazy stuff. Levi’s famously recommended freezing your jeans to kill bacteria and stave off any funky odors, but microbe expert Stephen Craig Cary says that’s a myth.
Most bacteria in our pants comes from our skin, and a lot of these organisms are preadapted to low temperatures. Cary recommends using high temperatures - think 121 degrees Celsius for ten minutes - to rid the denim of bacteria. Or, he adds, just wash them.
So, depending on how often you wear your jeans, their age, the denim type and what you do while you’re wearing them, you really don’t have to wash them as often as, say, your underwear.
If you want to get that uber-cool unique fading pattern, your best bet really is to avoid washing them for awhile, even if you have to soak them first to shrink them.

Same here. I hang them up to air for a while before putting them away after wearing (outdoors when possible, inside out to prevent sun-fading) and wash them after a few wearings. I ALWAYS wash them inside out, on delicate, then hang to dry. The heat of a dryer damages spandex and will cause them to lose their stretch and become baggy. Probably not as important with classic 100% cotton jeans, but I do like the stretch, and premium denim brands aren’t cheap, so I take very good care of them and make them last.

Unless you're paying an outrageous amount for jeans, I don't see what the big deal is about simply buying new jeans when your old ones get faded. People act as if jeans are family heirlooms! Geez, it's just another piece of clothing. Jeans aren't sacred. And frankly, I don't want my jeans to last forever because fashion styles change, body weight and size change, things change! People really should clean out their closets and get rid of old clothes that no longer fit or have gone out of style. That includes jeans.

    • @remingtonrojas

Jeans have always been in style and a good amount of people don't get fatter over time, it's obviously not healthy. Sure, throw away cheap old clothes but if you have some designer stuff, just put it in an attic because it will retain it's value almost guaranteed even if it isn't vogue.

I bought a Levis 501 one wash in October 2019. It's the really dark blue, heavy cotton version without any washing treatments. It smelled chemical when it arrived, so i washed it one time before the first wear. Since then i washed it never again, for 14 month now. It doesn't smell at all, it isn't dirty and you don't realize anything. The main reason why i do this is a much longer lifetime of the jeans. By washing a jeans for about 30 times a year, it looses more and more of it's cotton and thickness. With repairing it a few times i think it lasts 2 jears longer than my old 501. And i really love old worn jeans with visible character.

I have worn the same jeans now for three years straight with out washing. Not only do they have amazing fade patterns and wear marks but also have that one of a kind arsehole odor that truly makes them unique to me. A top tip I would like to offer other raw denim enthusiasts is the use of a damp sponge applied in a dabbing motion (do not rub) to remove shart stains from the rear panel of your jeans. I have used this multiple times after the consumption of Indian meals and it had dames me from having to run my jeans through the washer.

I'm new to RAW denim, but I have to say, I love my 14oz Naked&Famous jeans...I have a few pair which I rotate and so far it's been a couple of months and they don't smell any different without washing.
I think some of that is because it's winter and I'm wearing long johns under them, so they aren't getting rank with sweat. By the time things warm up (or if I spill something on them) then of course I'll wash them.
In fact, a friend of mine had a pair of Left Field jeans which he wore everyday and hadn't washed for a year-I was surprised because they didn't stink. We soaked them in ice cold water with a mild detergent for an hour. The soaking water was definitely dirty (but it didn't really bleed blue). It wasn't until we rinsed off the jeans with slightly warmer water to get rid of any left over soap, that the indigo bled a little. Afterwards, we hung them up in the shower to dry, and in the morning they looked good as new.
I think the secret to not making raw denim fade is to use cold water, because the it's the soap that is the thing that cleans them.

As somebody who's gone months without washing their jeans. Its possible, if you don't sweat a lot down there, wash your balls, change your underwear daily and give your jeans time to dry and rest between wears. At the end of the day you are wearing a protective layer of clothing (your underwear) between your skin and your jeans, just like wearing a jacket over a tshirt or wearing socks and shoes. And yes, you have may have to wash jackets more often because of arm pit odor and you shoes may smell bad in the summer when you sweat a lot, but usually we don't wash or clean these things all that often. If you wanna get rid of dead skin cells, dust and other dirt on your clothing you can also use brush and gently brush it out of the fabric. That was a common practice men used to do to prolong the time they are able to wear their suits before dry cleaning became a thing, because you also don't wash suits after every wear. Bottom line is when it starts to develop an odor it's probably time to wash them and that time span is different for everybody, because some people sweat more than others, some people just sit in the office all day, while some basically work out in their jeans on their job. So just do a little sniff test and decide if it's time to wash them.

If someone does this anyways, they aren't trying to appeal to you in the first place if you don't "get it", they are trying to appeal to a certain crowd and it's not like you are actively doing something to get this look, you just wear 'em.

I have a pair of 501 levis jeans that haven't been washed in about 1 year. They are a raw denim without elastane, which means that IF I wash them they have a tendency to shrink and they're not really meant to be washed often.
    they do not loose shape that jeans with elastane in them so I don't have to 'wash them to bring them back to shape';
so far I've left them out (inside out) in direct sunlight to kill germs and odour which seems to work fine. Honestly, they're not dirty at all still. But if the need arises to wash them I will do that.

I keep forgetting that jeans have become 'fashion'.
I wear jeans in situations where the work I am doing would destroy other materials. It is a great fabric for work pants. But after I am done for the day they are usually covered in dirt or dust or any number of materials so they get washed. One use, one wash. Maybe if I am working on a multi-day task I will reuse the same pair and wash them later.
Then again, I really do not care about fade patterns or how much blue there is. I tend to be more concerned with 'sharp thing not drawing blood' or 'keeping off stuff that takes forever to remove from skin' type functionality.

I've been doing landscaping work all summer with my naked and famous skinny guy raw denim in 90 degree weather. I've gotten ocean water, dirt, chlorine, mustard, and mayo all over them. Two things:
      1. If you get a "stain" like a small mustard spot, it will go away over time, usually within a month. All my spots have vanished.
      2. Spot treating (getting the stain immediately wet first then GENTLY wiping) goes a long way.
Also, I say embrace the dirt that goes into your jeans. It'll help them age and break in. It tells your story, too. I PROBABLY should wash soon though… 🤔

Hmm on my washing machine I have a 15 minute short cycle which is perfect for my jeans. Its not only how often you wash them but how long they are being rinsed through in the machine. My 15 minute cycle prevents wear. I dislike worn looks a bit and prefer to prolong life. I work 50 hours a week so I barely wear my jeans but sometimes you have to freshen up clothes. The video made a good point that it all depends. I may wash my jeans maybe every 10 days but I barely wear them anyway so a really short wash and hung dry for me is best. I have had my jeans for months and they still look brand new without the "worn" look. For me its something I want to avoid and just prolong the life of my clothing. T shirts and my other items of clothing are washed daily. It's only my jeans I refresh. If you want to prolong the life of jeans there is nothing wrong with short washes. It won't kill bacteria but most washes don't anyway unless you put them on a high temperature but for most clothes it would ruin them at anything above 40 degress (104 for americans). To start to kill bacteria you need at least an hour and a half at 60 ( 140 for americans) and if you did that to t shirts it would wreck them.
For clothes its about smelling good and making them clean. This is probably why the guy mentioned in the video found no difference. If he washed at 60 degrees he probably would of found some difference and it also depends on other variables so I wouldn't take it as a proven science as it's more pseudo than anything else.
Those concerned about bacteria though and do wash at low temperatures (like me) then if your washing machine has a maintenance option then use it at least once every two weeks. It puts the washing machine in a hot cycle to prevent bacteria and cross contamination onto other loads. Most peroples clothes still contain bacteria after washing and mixing loads with say tea towels and kids clothing increases it. However one fact you can look at is the bacteria on our skin we are pretty immune to anyway and it only becomes serious if someone has something like trachoma or a skin rash or soiled clothing. Most bacteria is actually pretty harmless (despite the headlines and fear mongers). Has an item of clothing made you sick?
I say use common sense, do your best to stay clean.

    2.Don’t, if you want faded-wear-marks.

I live in Arizona and my jeans get wet with sweat every time I wear them. And this video is telling me I don't need to wash them?

I have 5 pairs of jeans, i wear each one for one week at work. then wash all 4. the 5th is a backup for spills/stains. Never notice any smell, and if they get a bit dusty, all you have to do is shake them off.

lol I can’t remember the last time I’ve washed my jeans. I don’t get them dirty and they don’t smell bad, basically feel the same as a freshly washed pair. In fact I have a pair of ripped jeans that I’ve never washed bc they were $70 and I’m terrified of ruining them 😂

I work in a professional office setting so I sit in a well air conditioned setting while doing little to any movement that requires effort. As long as you shower everyday you should be fine. I don’t wash my jeans and don’t think they smell. Only wash mine if they get stained or dusty. Only wear one pair jeans probably once a week

When I have let jeans go unwashed for a few wearings I have noticed. That they usually feel looser especially around the waist. The material softens. They start stinking around day 3 even with the most thorough of personal hygiene practices and use of underwear.

My tip is to change your clothes as soon as you enter the house. If you wear your jeans all week for shorter periods of time they get less dirty than wearing them for hours and hours straight, sweating around in them.

I don't dry my jeans, flannel shirts , tee shirts etc etc either. Undergarments sometimes I'll put in dryer. The reason is the dryer destroys the fabrics quicker. Also, I don't use hot water. I use cold and wash jeans inside out.

Always keep a few pairs of washed and raw jeans. Love the look of raw denim but I love dem fadez too. There are totally hygienic ways of keeping denim unwashed though

Regular store bought, turn em inside out and wash em whenever. Hang dry.
Selvage, I give them an initial soak to get the starch and chemicals out then wash them inside out and hang dry them when they get funky.

I used to wash them after a single use in high school. I dont know why.
Now i wash them after wearing them 5 -10 times during fall/winter.
If its spring/summer Ill wash them after 1-4 uses but I rarely wear pants during these seasons.

  • @1979Heyjude
    @1979Heyjude 5 ปีที่แล้ว

He’s talking about high end stuff. Most jeans come pre-washed so wash them after every 5-10 wears. For raw denim wait as long as you can. I have a couple pairs of Japanese raw denim I got in the spring and still haven’t washed them. But I’ve only worn them 5-6 times. It helps if you have a lot of jeans so you can rotate. There is a special soap you can get for raw denim

well for me washing my jeans depends on how i often use it. if i only use my jeans once a week or twice a month I don't have to wash it so often. i wash my jeans after 2 or 3 months or sometimes after i wore it for 10 times
