My name is Zara Beth (zeezee25 on tiktok) and I post videos about disability, neurodiversity and what its like living with Tourette's Syndrome, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and Orthostatic Hypotension. Tourette's syndrome is a neurological condition causing involuntary movements called tics.
I use my social media (TikTok, TH-cam and Instagram) to advocate and raise awareness for my conditions and show what it is like living with a disability as a neurodivergent person.
I am also autistic and share my sensory struggles along with my experiences with mental health disorders.
I show what its like having a disability and the accomodations I have to help my daily life. I am an ambulatory wheelchair user showing my life using mobility aids and how chronic illness symptoms change from day to day!
I am also a musician with a popular song called "She's Mine" available on all streaming services - I wrote, produced, mixed and mastered all my songs myself! I am also an artist and a writer. I love reading and I'm currently writing a novel and a book about my life!

i have tics, recognized by my doctors. we believe they are anxiety tics because when im anxious they explode, I've been dealing with it since 2021
it can be funny sometimes, some people find it cute like my mom and boyfriend and thats quite nice, because most times it is really embarrassing and tiring.
no, I do not think its quirky and cute to be yelling nonsense stuff and gross words and attract the attention of strangers. people don't praise us who have tics, they actually get scared. i miss my life before when I could choose to stay quiet and BE quiet.
update: im totally sure my tic things are emotional thank godddd. i have very few now. i started eating better and exercising, been learning to be more disciplined and i dealed with lot of situations that were giving me so much anxiety. the unvoluntary jerking still happens but im much better and less vocal.

from what I know, anxiety cannot cause tics but can worsen pre existing tics, i would definitely recommend finding a doctor that doesn’t say they’re caused by anxiety so you can find the actual root of what’s causing them :)

I technically meet the diagnostic criteria since I have multiple movement and vocal tics, and it developed before I was 18. Thing is I started getting noticeable tics when I was 17 and I've done a bunch of research and that is rare. And yes I'm 19 now so its been longer than a year. Idk about getting a diagnosis. I want one but I feel like doctors will just brush it off as my autism or anxiety

Sounds exactly like my case. I'm the same age, mine developed majorly at 17, I had small this as a kid but they can be brushed off as kid things. I'm now 19 but I got diagnosed. The diagnosis I was given was Functional Movement Disorder. I'm brushed off a lot for my symptoms which is only tics (My concern for the diagnosis is because I should have other symptoms.). After insurance the neurologist appointment was roughly $320 under UPS Teamcare health insurance (covered under my mom). I had to get a referral from a psychiatrist because my primary care doctor assumed it was stress along with a vitamin d3 deficiency (how that causes tics is beyond me.) I wish you luck, research your diagnosis from your professional and bring up any concerns.
(My neurologist said there aren't any tests for TS or FMD. She said at least what I've been diagnosed with is curable... Cause that definitely changes the outcome considering I'm still experiencing waxing and waning symptoms after 2 years going on 3.)

I developed tics late, but I meet all the criteria for Tourette's except the age. (We don't know if I had any tics before that were so infrequent they went unnoticed.) I'm diagnosed with functional tics. I pretty much present exactly the same way as someone with Tourette's, and because a lot of people don't actually know about other tic disorders, if I have to explain it I sometimes just say it's "similar to Tourette's".
According to my neurologist, there's a bit of an epidemic of young AFAB people with ADHD who are suddenly developing functional tics.

I have ADHD tics, for me they are only motor unless a gasp or grunt counts as verbal tho I personally don’t include since they are not that often, I usually tic by my head shoving to the side or forcing it up which hurts, sometimes it happens to my hands which tenses any other thing doesn’t happen too often. I haven’t told people at school about my tics because they aren’t to frequent (on certain days) but I have gotten weird looks before😅

Something that I worry about is that I'm 19 almost 20 and never once brought up tics during a doctor's visit. So I'm worried that a doctor would not believe me.
A little context, I have been having both motor and vocal tics for a while. My tics didn't start become worse or noticeable until I was 15.
I had a few tics for example I had a quiet high pitch squeak tic that would happen every few days. This did not affect me very much hence why I never brought it up, because it wasn't something I thought I should bring up.
But my tics started getting worse and worse then a few months later covid happened so I didn't visit any doctors (I also normally only saw a doctor every 2-3 year). Now I do not have health insurance atm (I'm american ;-;).
So idk what to do since I don't have any notes from a doctor nor "proof" that I've been having tics for years.
I don't want to go to the doctors (and spend a shit ton of money) just for them to not believe me or think I'm doing it for attention :/

That doesn't always work, but is helpful. What you have said regarding seeing doctors in the US is true. I'm almost 60. All 3 of my children have had ADD. My middle child, after going to a therapist for testing was informed they did not have ADD. I honestly think the doctor thought she was just bull💩ing to get the medication.
Later in my life, while trying to get established with a new physician, The physician informed me that, "adults don't get ADD." The physician actually saved me a lot of wasted time with her ignorant statement. Even though I had a horrendous ocular migraine that day I do remember a conscious thought of well I guess I won't be coming back to see her!! No one "gets" ADD, it's not contagious.🙀🤔🤷

I started suffering my ticks when I was in grade school. Pepole said I was faking them. I was super stressed out and quite depress. I finally spoke to my home doctor, and she ended up getting me diagnosed. All of my ticks are physical, and just recently, i was speaking with someone about them. And they said that ticks are always repeated movements. And I was about to disagree when it occurred to me that they are. I just have so many that they feel random. My head might shake, the inside of my stomach might convulse, my arm might go flying, my legs might twitch. Always the same places over and over again wherever they might be. I found it quite interesting how many people told me I had Tourettes syndrome when I didn't.

I would be in a horrible place. Even though nobody truly cares in my head I think they do. My friend started faking Tourettes when she saw a video on it and she hit her thigh and I felt terrible because it was bruised. Idk why she was doing this (it was 2 years ago) but it was really dumb because she ONLY hit her thigh and would only do it when it came up in conversation or I’d randomly twitch. I have really bad anxiety that I’ve learned how to suppress but a way it leaves my body is me randomly twitching/doing a little shiver around my upper body. Whenever I did this she would start faking. She stopped overtime but she still goes through many gross phases like this.

Or, sometimes I’ll get a chill that makes my neck twitch, which kinda hurts sometimes. I haven’t really thought of the idea that I could have tics, or straight up Tourette’s, until recently, but I’ve been trying to keep note of it. I’m 15, btw. My anxiety decreased, so I don’t get panic attacks. But I do have tic attacks if I’m too stressed out or overwhelmed. And if it lasts too long I dissociate.

Hey Zara I love watching your videos there so inspiring for all ages! I have a few questions! I have like these wierd head movements and shrugging of the shoulders I wonderd if there were anxiety or stress causes them! I have had a few episodes like fainting episodes in the past 2-3months and been seeing loads of doctors! Is this worth going to my local gp! My mum doesn’t really take them in she just thinks I do them for the sake of doing it!! Keep going girl I believe in you! Sending lots of love!

I've always thought that random hard limit of it having started before age 18 a bit weird. Doesn't that mean that the exact same symptoms have to get a different diagnosis if you cannot remember or prove when it started?
I'm pretty sure I did have a loud snorting "habit" and blinking "habit" since at least primary school in the 90s. I developed another rubbing my nose very hard "habit" around age 16. And around 15 years ago at age 25-ish (I have ADHD so my memory is a bit hazy) I developed a new weird hiccup/whooping sound "habit" after I had whooping cough that just persisted for years.
It wasn't until 2020 when I suddenly had to supress my "habit" of snorting loudly and touching my face in public, which caused me to develop a bunch of new "habits" which I now realised wasn't particularly voluntary like grimacing, a bunch of new vocal sounds to still the same "itch" that the snorting and nose rubbing satisfied. And several of these, including a really painful head twitch (that I fortunately managed to stop by allowing myself to do a more extreme grimacing instead) seemed much more stereotypically like a tic which finally made me realise that my "habits" had been tics all along. But nobody in my family noticed and don't remember me doing them; probably because I usually suppressed them most of the time which is probably why they were so violent and loud compared to the tics I have now that I allow myself to have them. So I don't know if I can prove I had it before I was 18.😂

I don’t think I do I think I have like mini tics (autism tics/anxiety tics) if they’re a thing like o can’t stop myself clenching my fists, blinking when I don’t need to, flapping my hands and snapping my jaw open and shut

    • @MommmaT
      @MommmaT 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Autism does not cause tics. You’re experiencing stimming, which is not an involuntary movement.

    • @millygd955
      @millygd955 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@MommmaT I will just say that a lot of especially lage diagnosed autistics also have anxiety which is a contributing factor to some minor tics. Stimming is used to self regulate and tics are simply just involuntary. (I know you probably know this but when I was first starting out in this community it was so difficult to find all the information and differences between everything)

If this is true then those with a minor level of Tourette's couldn't be diagnosed.
There are 'some' that were diagnosed after becoming adults.
There's more than Tourette's that involve tics.

I'm sure that I don't have tourettes but I have ticks someway. I don't known why I have them or if it's common or not.
They aren't often, few times a day mostly. I can stop myself from doing it but is very difficult and uncomfortable. I hit myself on my head or arm sometimes and make sounds. When I'm in public I tense my muscles or stim to stop it before it happens but like I said sometimes it's difficult. Does everyone else has smth like this too?
