Is that a tic? I have the same thing and haven’t found anything online. It’s been happening since I was a kid. My friends noticed it when I was driving and god damn they looked at me as if I was weird.

You can be diagnosed with Tourette's by a neurologist. My son was 5 when we finally insisted that he see a neurologist. I had read an article in the newspaper that described my son exactly. After that diagnosis, we got a second opinion from a pediatric neurologist, who not only diagnosed my son, he noted that my husband was having tics, shoulder shrugging. He had always done that ever since I can recall.
Because our son's first tics were vocal, ( constant throat clearing ) we took him to a pediatric allergist, thinking he may have allergies. That doctor told us he just needed more attention. We has already brought one of our older boys to the same Doctor when he was about 12, for constant throat clearing. And he told us that our older son wasn't getting enough attention. The reason for both of these diagnoses was because they slept at night with no problem. He forgot that Tourette's Syndrome was another reason.
Our younger son was almost classic Tourette's- throat clearing started at an early age, tics started in Grade one. We could almost predict what type of tic he would have next. With him, when the pediatric allergist told us he wasn't getting enough attention, we knew he was being misdiagnosed. He was the youngest child on whom we all doted, whose brothers and sister loved him dearly and would play games with him. So we just left it until I read the article about Tourette's Syndrome in the newspaper.
Did having a diagnosis really help him? Well, it was a relief to find out what was wrong with him. He also has ADD ( 70% of Tourette's sufferers have ADD or ADHD ).
Unfortunately, having this diagnosis did not help him with school. We had nothing but trouble with teachers, and he begged to be home schooled. However, the psychiatrist he was seeing ( for ADD, OCD and depression ) discouraged home schooling because he felt our son needed to socialize. Was he right? We will never know. He hated school, and remembers the misery he suffered from teachers who should have known better.
So do you want a diagnosis? Just get in to see a neurologist. There are a few problems with having a diagnosis of Tourette's syndrome regarding employment ie. cannot join a police force, and a few others. So think about that before you go for a diagnosis. From your symptoms, I would say you have Tourette's and it is real, has been around for centuries, is not your fault, has no real cure but some meds that can help in quality of life.
Nobody has any right to tell you what you have or do not have. It is not in your head - it is usually genetic or familial and is a real disorder.

If you have lived your whole life without people around you noticing/knowing you have a disorder, I would say keep it that way is better especially if you can.
Being treated differently by people you know for a small case of tourette will not be pleasant for you.

These days I described the feel/urge before a tic like a capacitor. As long as the capacitor isn’t full I can suppress the tic, but if it is I have to dissipated the charge and it end up being a very violent tic. I really like the capacitor analogy, it’s been the easiest way to explain it.

    • @B1gBoyPants
      @B1gBoyPants 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

That’s an interesting analogy! I’ve always compared it to an itch. It’s not the same feeling, but it’s like, the more I actively think about it and try to ignore it, the worse it gets, and the harder it is not to do it. But if I’m not thinking about it and just going about my day, I’ll just have a tiny little tic that’s barely noticeable (for context, I only have one visible tic, and not Tourette’s).

I've had tourettes syndrome since I was 5 and its severe. I like to watch these videos and see that I'm thankful people don't have it that bad with tics. My tics are rare..they include..biting myself, hitting myself repeatedly, and clawing into my skin..my other tics are just head jerking, eye blinking, repeating other people's words or sentences, mouth moving, ticking sounds with my mouth, body twisting, and alot more. Even though it's hard to control it..I don't care what people think about it being weird or me being a freak..i can't control it..so i just go with it 😊

I think I may have a tic disorder. My tics are simple (eye blinking/winking, head shakes, facial grimaces, and saying hey) people can barely notice them. I'm 14 and they started a few months ago. I have anxiety and depression too. I have about 180 (more or less) tics a day. I'm just not sure what's causing it or how to talk about it but it's scaring me, if anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it.

Carmen Diaz I have had tics for a long time, I don't count em. The more you think about them the more they happen. When I joined the swim team I noticed they have improved. But when I'm on break they get worse again. The best thing to do it not worry about it. Sometimes you won't even notice them happening, and you forget. Atleast I do with mine, my friend noticed one I didn't notice. The more you exercise the better it gets it seems. This is speaking just from personal experience. Yours seem more severe than mine. I've always just had motor no vocal.

Carmen Diaz ps mine get worse when I'm really stressed and or really excited or I have this shoulder shrug one I think it's a tic because it's happened for years I will get cold all of the sudden and then I shrug. I don't mind tho it's not bad enough to get in the way of stuff. Watching videos about tics makes them SO much worse in that moment .

That's the same way mine started around 12 years old. They kind of morphed into different things over the years and I've picked up things from other people but I still have the throat clearing which is exasperated by allergies and a slight head twitch and neck muscle twitches. I hate them. I hate to see them in any video of myself. Sorry to say, but I'm almost 44 yrs old now and they haven't gone away although I've learned to control them better over the years. They seem to be worse when I'm anxious or when I'm not consciously trying to control them. Like when I'm watching TV.

I’ve had different tics since I was about 12 and I’m now 18 and finally going to hopefully find some form of treatment. It started with tics, such as yawning constantly even when I was not tired, blinking rapidly, raising my eyebrows and shrugging my shoulders. Thought the years I’ve gotten worse to the point where I’m ticking almost every 10-15 seconds and sometimes for 10 seconds straight. Not only is it constant it also has caused me pain in my body wear I have pulled joints in my back and dislocated my shoulder from having a violent tic in my neck while holding a heavy bag. Hopefully they doctors will have a solution because anyone that knows how frustrating it is understands that any sort of easing of the tics would seem to be a miracle.

Like others here, I was diagnosed at 5 (21 now) with ts
The best way I can describe my premonitory urges is a tingling in my spine
And sometimes a tic will get "stuck" and I'm left with an uncomfortable sensation in my back until the tic can come out
I also experience both ocd-related tics (compulsive/partially involuntary) and completely involuntary tics
The compulsive tics are those that happen when something doesn't feel "right" and you repeat a tic until it does (like waving across your peripheral vision or flexing your throat over and over). I call these partially involuntary bc there is a little control in stopping these, but it's very uncomfortable to do so
The completely involuntary tics are those which are sudden and usually occur in single tics (unexpected leg jerk or sudden muscle contraction)
I'm not sure if there's official terms for these, but this is what I've come to call them from my own experiences

I think I might have tics. I used to just twitch my arms and legs slightly when I was younger. Now they have evolved in the last few months to a head jerk and now I shake my head as well. I’ve been very stressed today especially and I had to leave English and sit in the councillor’s office for the whole class because I wouldn’t stop shaking, hyperventilating and shaking my head.

I’ve had several tics come and go throughout my life but my current ones are full head twitches in any direction, blowing out of my nose frequently, constant throat clearing, random finger movement after being still for several seconds, and a randomly occurring stutter. I used to squeak loudly when I was 7 but that went away. When I was 10-13 I would roll my bottom lip over itself and also roll my eyes back quickly. I have yet to discuss any of my thoughts on this with my family but I know they are aware of the tics.

you see I have been professionally diagnosed with Tourette’s and I agree with this video. I curse, flinch randomly, yell, say animal noises, and much more. Shoulder movements and head rolls/eye rolls depend on how long and how bad they are. If you’ve had these head shoulder and eye rolls for about a year then u probably got a severe tic or slight Tourette’s. I prefer you get checked by a doctor before “self” diagnosing.

I have all of those. It's hard, I got diagnosed with tourette's when I was 5. I'm 11 now, they got worse. People ask me what's wrong and it annoys me, I told my best friend and he told people I act stupid cuz of my tics. My symptoms are jerking my head, humming, squealing in my mouth, making sounds while inhaling, click my tongue, flick my fingers and toes, blinking, blinking hard, making fart sounds, eye rolling that cause headaches, eye rolling my eyes to the bottom corners and bottom of my eyes while jerking my head up, whistle, reverse whistling, whistling through my teeth, saying random things, and beatboxing.

My son’s Tourette’s started around 4 years old. His tics increased from then and were sometimes exhausting, but never as severe as yours. But we had nightmare problems with teachers - they made his life misery.
Apparently, tics can get worse or can start to disappear in the teenage years. You are still young, so maybe yours will decrease. I have seen many videos on TH-cam of teenage girls with similar tics to yours. They explain how they cope. Very good senses of humour.
My son was fortunate that his tics mostly disappeared in his teens.
Almost all tics disappear at 20 or around then. It is rare for people to continue to have tics as adults.
I know this is cold comfort at the moment, but thank goodness for a good friend.
Maybe print up some pamphlets to hand out when people ask you what is wrong. Then you don’t have to explain - very annoying, I know - and they will learn something.

I’m 13, and I’ve had a sensory-phenomena type disorder since I was around 6-7. (If you’re not sure what it is please search it up, there’s actually a pretty good video on TH-cam about it, literally one of the only videos that are called “Sensory Phenomena”) I get random urges that can happen anywhere on my body, like I get an intense urge to move my toe(s) towards the ground and tense up. I also have one vocal tic where I just make a weird sound, sometimes if it gets severe I move my head back intensely while doing it. Also, if I get excited about some things I get a very intense burst of euphoria and excitement, and sometimes shiver with it for some reason.
      Any help?

I feel like one of the worst parts of having tics is the fact that many people think your doing it on purpose and can stop anytime. I haven’t been properly diagnosed yet but I have had tics before I even knew what they were called since middle school (I’m in college now and just starting to find out more). Every couple of months it would resurface and my family wouldn’t understand and even get angry. Agressive blinking, shoulder shrugs, clearing my throat were manageable and I didn’t care much for it. However I’ve been getting headshakes recently that have made me quite nauseous and dizzy, so much so it’s hard to focus which is why I’m planning to get this checked up. Granted I didn’t even know what it was but it doesn’t make it any better when your parents don’t even want to think that this is a problem

This is a very helpful video. I had convinced myself I didn't have Tourettes cause when I researched previously the symptoms shown as examples were extremely severe compared to my own.
I have this shiver that constantly appears when I feel an itch deep within the muscles of my upper arms. It usually happens right after I see rapid movement, hear a loud/sudden/highpitched/unpleasant sound (which isn't good when you play in an orquestra like I do), whenever I touch something unpleasant and even when I think about any of those things or even think about the shiver itself. It has been happening ever since I was 15 (maybe even before), but they showed at such little frequency I simply thought I was cold. However, at 17 they became so frequent even my mom noticed, and she thought it might be a side effect of a medication I was taking (it was prescribed to me for a side effect it had, but it was an antipsychotic and I don't have psychosis. I do have other mental issues, I just am trying to not overshare. Also, my mom is a doctor, just not the mental health type, but she has slight work experience on the matter). But even when I stopped taking it the symptoms percisted, and I currently am not going to therapy anymore since my mom doesn't trust the therapist, with these involuntary movements going on "because of her". So even if it is Tourettes I can't get diagnosed. (There's also the other Tic disorders mentioned in this video, but the main website I used to do a lighter search of this topic didn't specify their names, so I couldn't search more of that matter.)
The reason I thought it wasn't Tourettes was cause I thought I didn't have any vocal tics, but now I realize that I also tend to gasp loudly sometimes when I shiver, loud enough to scare my mom. I just never counted those as vocal tics cause it happened at the same time as the shivers, making me think they were connected and just one tic. And to add more, I'm also on the Autism spectrum, and some of the vocal tics (repeating words you hear or your own words) are symptoms of autism which I have, which I associated with autism so much I didn't they could be also associated with Tourettes.
Regardless, I'll probably won't get diagnosed so soon, since I'm a coward who doesn't share worries and thoughts with my mom. However, I've become used to my involuntary movements, and everyone around me knows I have them (and if they don't I just say they're movements I can't control), so I'm not too worried about it. This video only answered a question I had about myself, and even if for now the only benefit it gives me is relief, then so be it.

I went to 2 neurologists a year ago and at the time I had tics for about 9 months. They both told me I just had tics that were likely anxiety related. Now it’s been almost 2 years since they first started. I’ll probably go to a neurologist again to see if the diagnosis has changed. Because I do have all the symptoms.

I've never done anything like this before, so she doubts it could be tourettes. Although my brother has it, and I think my dad may have had it, so idk

When asked about what is "wrong" with me and why I am doing the things I have, I say that I have Tourette's syndrome, but that is immediately denied by everyone. I guess everyone has the education and certification to state whether or not I have Tourette's syndrome. I want to get this diagnosed, but I am 18 now, it started back in middle school by the way, and I am in college and I don't know what to do to get diagnosed. Can someone help me with this issue?

Make an appt with a neurologist. Explain that you made the appt because you have tics, and tell the doctor what the tics are, how long you've had them, etc.. She will categorize you into a category and make a treatment plan. Even though you've had them for years they will still be able to diagnose, usually more easily this way.

I’ve had motor tics as early as 6-7yo I think, and have spent my life dealing with them. They used to be severe (I would turn and look behind me constantly when watching TV, for example); these days, in my 40s, they are mild but still, annoying. When I was a teen, my mother would reprimand me, try to get me to control myself. One time, during a high school dance performance, I ticced out so hard on stage, it basically turned into a comedy show, the audience was laughing so hard. I’ve had friends giggle in my face; I get it, eye-roll tics can be unnerving and hilarious. Shoulder and neck shakes are just as bizarre to the average person. I’ve kinda trained myself to let my tics out when no one is looking, so that I don’t cause weirdness or make people laugh. I guess you could call them stealth tics. Not that I can fully control them, but I can kinda suppress them a bit, like holding off on a really bad itch and then scratching hard when no one is watching! Still, they are noticeable sometimes. My family doesn’t say anything anymore, they just accept it. I try not to talk about it as it’s incredibly uncomfortable and, of course, it means admitting there’s something wrong with you. In fact, this comment is the first time I’ve written about my tics, and it feels good to be able to share this. I wouldn’t wish tics on anybody. But for those of us who have tics, ah well. We’re the movers and shakers of the world, just not quite in the way most people understand :)

I don't have any vocal tics, only motor tics. They were worse when I was younger. Periods of deep concentration or excitement would cause me to roll my hands by my head and hold my breath for a few seconds. In stressful situations or deep thought I catch myself holding my breath and moving my fingers by my side now (age 26). I don't know what made it not as severe as I've done biofeedback and anxiety management throughout the years.

    Any help?
Or can anyone help on what I may have?
