    This...was amazing to watch. And I very much love your comparison in the description. Thank you so much for posting this, as it gives me a better idea of what I’ll be purchasing as far as Devil-Forge goes when I reach that point. You, BigStack, ArtbyAdrock, and several others have been so informative to me with your videos. I cannot even begin to describe how much I appreciate you all.

    Interesting comparison of their performance when starting from cold. The slower furnace should definitely make a lot better time on the second melt of the day once the lining is up to temp though. Maybe even getting faster melt times than the fiber blanket furnace as the day goes on, because all that thermal mass thatbtook so long to heat up also holds onto that heat much longer. Maybe you could do a comparison starting with both furnaces already hot, or do several back to back melts with each furnace, timed, and see how long the tortoise takes to beat the hare.
    That said, these kits are marketed towards hobbyists, and most hobbyists probably almost only ever end up doing single melts on the occasional weekend when the weather cooperates and time permits. The extra durablility isn't needed in that case, so the extra cost only buys you slower melts when starting from cold. If anyone is thinking of buying one, consider how you plan to use it before deciding which type of construction fits your bill. Then consider building your own to save a bundle as well!😉

    I just picked up the -2MB. I coated it with the rigidizer last week, waited another week (very humid here), and fired it up for the first time. This weekend, I plan to cure my crucible and make tongs and a holder for pouring it. Then, I might finally get to melt something!

  • @Brewdiver82

    Nice comparison. Was looking at these two and was leaning towards the more expensive M model, but now that I've seen this the Mb is the way to go. Just the cost savings on propane alone over time with the shorter melt times would make it worth it even if they were both priced the same. The fact the Mb is way cheaper is just icing on the cake.

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you get them really hot before pouring, you can use the the Devil Forge to help with that. I would also turn the ingot out as soon as it’s set enough to be turned out. That normally works for me, I’ve left one to cool for too long and it fused to the mold. You could also try brushing them with some graphite powder very lightly.
      I hope that helps. 👍

      I put some major differences in the description that might help you out. Watch the first 45 seconds of the video(the text does move a bit quick: press pause to check it out) but it describes the major differences that you are paying for. The visual that you see between the two weighs in as well. The FB2M is a cemented model, while the FB2Mb is not cemented, so the thermal differences lie there. What size crucible do you recommend for these? Specifically top diameter. Looks about 110-120mm or 4,5".

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I typically use a #4 or #5 clay graphite crucible for most things I do. I don’t know the exact dimensions, but those work great and allow plenty of room for tools to get in for removal. I get mine from PMCsupplies

    • @jonatanrullman
      @jonatanrullman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Unfortunately I don't think there is much consensus on numbering crucibles.
      I checked PMCsupplies and their Procast #4 is about 6" in diameter but no #5 is available. They also sell Salamander which uses the slightly more uniform A-designation. But an A4 is only a tad over 4" so there's quite a difference.
      I currently have an A8 crucible which has a top diameter of about 6". But with the FB2MB only having a chamber of about 7,8" I'm wondering if I have to get all new crucibles if I switch. Thus my question on the size of yours.
      If you happen to pass the crucibles with a ruler at hand I'd be very grateful if you could clear the matter up.
