@@derrickginkel9431 It's easier to remove the bar if it isn't poured to the top and it cools a lot faster because of both the less metal and the mold has a "Release Point" for the heat.
Have you tried putting a piece of cardboard between the fire brick and the crucible to keep them from sticking together? I noticed it stuck during your massive can melt.
Do I own a furnace of any kind? No. Do I plan to start melting things to turn into bars and such? Also no. Did I watch this because I've watched videos using these things before and was curious how weird it could be to re-line a furnace? Yes, yes I did. Also: The simple mechanism to keep the crucible held while pouring while also putting something between it and you gloved hand is just fantastic.
I have seen so many vids where people say they need to do this. I have never seen it done though !! I actually enjoyed this video. I got to see how its done and what it is made of. Great idea for a vid, thanks for sharing with us !!

I've watched nearly every vid on TH-cam about smelting and for some reason never saw you until today. I must compliment you on your castings as I can see you take care to do it right and neatly. Most of the other youtubers just rush through the process and cast, even if their casting looks like s*it. Thank you for taking pride in what you do and the end result of your project. Hi, glad you mentioned wearing a mask, I'm an insulation engineer, once ceramic fibre was exposed to anything over 600oC we treated it the same as asbestos, it's great stuff but not for breathing in.

Nice! That rigidizer looks like it was a lot easier to apply compared to the refractory cement stuff that came with the devil forge. It didn’t seem to want to stick to the wool when I painted mine on.
It is a lot easier to apply, probably not as resilient as the refractory that comes with it, but it will hold up decent enough depending on how much and how hard it’s used and abused 👍

Great video, I've built own furnaces and I only ever used refractory cement, never knew you could get a rididizer for the wool. Will look into it, Shot my Guy.
The rigidizer is probably sodium silicate. When I made crucible furnaces, we casted the base in high density castable refractory and the lid ring with a lighter mix that was reinforced with stainless steel fiber.
I am surprised. Figured you would also add a refractory cement to the outside. Guess this wool is impregnated with something that the rigidizer activates so you donned to.
I was wondering about the lid myself, I was finally able to coat my furnace with satanite but the blasted lid area went to hell cause the insides fell out....though I shoulda known better considering it was Always falling out, downside to buying a cheaper off-brand furnace. Did manage to melt a bunch more aluminum, got several more bars of copper, and even got my first brass bar. Going to have to rethink my surfacing on the interior of the furnace though. There a product called fiberfax insulation holds up to 2000 degree's .I use it to seal magnesium furnaces which go up to 2,500°and normal running temperature of 1200 to 1500°
Hi, I am an industrial insulator, there is a material called Aerogel thinner and far more efficient than ceramic fibre new tech 1 inch is equivalent to 3 inches of ceramic
To increase the efficiency of the oven buy these things 3cm thick ceramic fiber blanket. how to adhesive alumina paste . reflantante part prefabricated alumina gloques. last lining . Jeweler's plaster or plaster but it is not any of these elements It is Kaolin clay . The squirrel minimum thickness 1.mm up to 3.00 and always with distilled water. So much clarity of ceramic fiber blanket is a high loss of resources as it is not a material with a high reflective coefficient.
Mmm yummy refractory cristobalite dust... Sure hope that rigidizer works though, some brands require you to really douse the wool lol. Also edit: for the initial burnoff you should really do it in incremental increases, annealing the material over a long period to make sure the wool stabilizes and won't release any fumes or harmful dust
Neither method of application is wrong. Rigidizer can be applied by either paint brush, roller brush and/or spray bottle. The spray bottle more than likely can provide the quicker coverage for the least amount of time. I would have used a spray bottle but soaked the entire kaowool blankets front to back then fit it all back into the smelter forge allowing the rigidizer time to cure and then apply a refractory mortar and sodium silicate (water glass) to the remaining exposed surfaces to the heat source. That stuff is not cheap so it would probably be best to extend the life of it as much as possible by taking a few extra steps.
Very cool. Is the hardener all you really need? I've been off making one with wool as I really don't want to deal with it. And I thought you still had to line with cement or you'd still have the danger from wool every time you used it?
I’ve applied rigidizer once in the past when the wool was looking pretty haggered to protect against the wool danger and the wool from breaking down any further. I wear a respirator when I melt, so I’m not terribly concerned until the wool starts getting really weathered, but I think a nice coat of refractory would definitely be better 👍
I seriously hope you were wearing a mask when taking the old stuff out and putting the new stuff in. I used to work with this as part of my job and it’s extremely hazardous!!
What would happen should you fill a mold half way with copper and the last half with aluminum? Or make a three layer ingot with copper, brass, and aluminum?
Just so everyone is aware alway ware gloves while doing this also a respirator and vacuum/pickup all left over scrap and dispose of properly.... founders wool is some serious bad stuff. Don't let your pets around it or kids while doing this process.
I know you stated that you have to heat the molds to get rid of moister. Is there a safe way to show your viewers what truly happens if molds are not preheated?

If you wrok with wool for furnaces especially ceramic ones please use a mask. And gloves that stuff is not healthy for you at all. I work as a mason for relining industrial furnaces. Please consider it.
The structure of it makes it an excellent insulator it barely absorbs any heat at all. It's make from very small ceramic strands that make upp the wool. Ceramic is very tough and stand up to heat really well. It's very unhealthy though to inhale the dust(ceramic strands) from it. Especially the ones that have been burnt.
also when handlinh kale wool or stuff like this plese wear gloves it will eat your skin up well maby not the stuff that he bought from civan store but the stuff i done in kilns and ark furnaces i cral in to to replace the insultion also take a shower after cuting and useing

Lookin good. Word of advise I use a cheap $1 spray bottle from walmart to apply my rigidizer makes the job go that much easier.

An old Bread knife will also do very well so long as the serrate isn't too pointy.

What is the liquid that you used to harden the ceramic wool? And, does the new wool give you higher temps?
