  • I have been quite busy and took a bit of time off... I'm sorry that I was away for so long... I am getting back into the groove of things, and decided to showcase my new treasure chest that I got for Christmas and I gave it some flame to give it some character. I was happy with how the chest turned out. I then melted an old aluminum casing that was an armored jacket for a huge copper cable. I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed making it...

      I’ll have to find some diamond molds or make some. That would definitely be a nice to add to the chest 👍

    During the last hurricane, it blew down our pool cage. A man stopped by and is right this minute gathering all that aluminum. I wish I were brave enough to melt it all down myself. I have more studying to do, I think. I really do pay a lot of attention to your videos. You've taught me so much. So next time the pool cage falls down, I'll have enough info to do what needs to be done! ✅

    Nice treasure chest. Did you buy it at Hobby Lobby? I thought about getting one at Thanksgiving when they were on sale. The next time I was in there, they were regular price. Great idea burning it. I did not think of that. I was going to have my daughter paint it. It looks good. Great melt, the coins look awesome.

      @@TheGrowingStack no worries - hobbies have to be fun or they are jobs. People need downtime. I can’t fathom the pressure of ideas, filming, editing, publishing, etc. I watch TH-cam more than TV and the 15 or so active channels I follow that publish either once or twice a week create their own pressures on me to keep up. Question if you don’t mind - how many hours of your time to get us 15 minutes of content? I’d guess 1-3 hours of time for every minute.

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JimFinlayson I totally hear you on the hobby/job thing for sure, and I do love doing it.
      For the time of it all(And I never mind you asking- ask me anything) they depend based on the project I start and what I “think” is a good idea at the time and start running with(I can never stop a project once I start it, one of my downfalls I suppose-especially ones that I realize I’m in over my head but have to finish) but generally a normal project like this from start to finish(without distractions) takes me probably 15 hours of solid work time. I guess you could boil it down to an hour/minute of content when all is said and done. Of course life/work/family all intertwine and they take me much longer depending on the week and what is going on. Feel free to ask me anything you want to, and shoot me an email if you have the time: TheGrowingStack@Gmail.com

    Maybe a video idea as I've never seen someone do it, although this is possibly for a good reason - what about melting copper wires WITHOUT stripping them first?
    I've always wondered on that - will the heat be enough to reduce the rubber to ash/carbon or will it turn into some tar-like substance that'll ruin the crucible?
    If you want something different to pour, do some bismuth - same weight and near same melting point as lead but non-toxic and if you get the temperature right, you get this beautiful rainbow sheen to the finished product.

    Borax would have helped with the pour. Also, when pouring smaller molds, you want less material in the crucible. It makes handling the pour easier. Use a bar mold on your first pour and then just remelt the bar. Great video, though.

    • @SeanBrown22
      @SeanBrown22 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would borax break the surface tension or otherwise make the metal more “runny”?

    • @slimpickins09er87
      @slimpickins09er87 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sean Brown Borax would work as a Flux to allow the metal to flow freely, also separating any impurities in the metal. The biggest issue was that he had too much melted metal to pour such small molds. I found out this problem at Christmas. I was pouring 2oz Christmas tree molds for gifts. The first of the pours over filled the mold, but as I poured more, the pours became more acceptable. I had several different pours and had the issue on the first 2 rounds of pours. I solved it by pouring a small bar mold. Which decreased the width of the stream of metal when it was time to pour the small mold. Making it easier to determine when to end the pour.

    Hey great to see you back My friend !! Real life always comes first and you tube maybe 4th or 5th... Don't sweat it.. we all need a break and the holidays are stressful enough as it is.. love the new chest am happy ya burned it to give it that aged look and will help keep it from rotting in any shape form or fashion..besides how many treasure chests are new???? LOL I do have a question was the aluminum pouring so slow because it was already freezing up and not hot enough? just curious as it seemed the first coins were pouring very slowly and seemed to be having difficulty pouring.. I honestly do not know.. or do you think it was because it wasn't pure aluminum? See ya on the next one!!!! great coins :)

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here, but I had to do it. I felt your pain 🙂
      What I really can’t decide moving forward is whether of not to keep ingots and other projects separate or with the same metal group. The engineer in me says mixing everything together would load balance the shelf vs having all copper on one side and aluminum on the other. But the organizer in me says keep them together. 🤷‍♂️
      Either way, it’s going to be fun 😃👍
