    My hours are pretty erratic, and bought this furnace over a month ago.
    Finally fired it for the first time today. I chuckled when I heard the familiar burner sound LOL
    I applied the rigidizer several weeks ago, so I don't think moisture is a major concern. However, I did the steps they recommended.
    I've been fascinated by metals for most my life, but you inspired me to go ahead and take the next step ;)
    I'm gonna be extra cautious, having just seen a video today of a guy setting a hot crucible on tile. The tile exploded shortly after! Needless to say I'll be picking up firebrick for my melt tomorrow!
    Stay safe, and take care BSD!

      @bigstackD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes mate definitely get fire bricks they will last you forever just don’t throw them at your final creations or they will tend to break down over time🤷🏻‍♂️.
      Remember safety first and have fun and any questions mate hit me up on the email below as I answer all emails but I unfortunately don’t see all questions on TH-cam FB or Instagram as I get that many of them they move down the list and go unseen.

    How awesome was that!! I’m an industrial HVAC tech and I have barrels of copper, 150hp electric motors that are bad, all sorts of fun stuff that would melt in that furnace. #1 copper is going for almost 3$ a pound in Denver. Cheers

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah she certainly is a powerful beauty, if you take your copper to the scrapyard a lot of yards won’t pay extra for ingots you’re better off leaving them in the original form, Also if you melt copper into ingots I’ve seen people can ask 300-400% more than what they’re worth on eBay.

    You really should order some Satanite and put a coating on the kaowool. It does break down and release fibers. I know you usually wear a respirator, but still. I just made a new furnace out of a half barrel lined with kaowool. Used two layers of the Satanite and the difference is remarkable. Anyways, love your channel. Be safe.

      Cheers matey for the link . I contacted the manufacturer and he sent me this message below👍🏻😁
      When we producing gas forges gas furnaces we use Ceramic insulation we cut it add to products and when it is new and we cutting it then yes is many dusts which is bad for lungs. We use many safety things and very good ventiliation because when insulation is soft and you moving it and cutting then is so many dangerous dusts.
      But when insulation is inside the furnace or forge and you start it first time and ceramic insulation get hot it HARDEN and then is no any dusts. Ceramic insulation have long time and it hould high temperatures the insulation HARDEN and is safe to use it. However to be sure for full protection we wrote that we recommend to use safety mask.
      No matter what are you doing or WELDING METALS or MELTING METALS or DOING SOMETHING ELSE need to use safety mask for max protection.
      And i saw in the comments that peoples writting that when you use is many dangerous dusts and so on and it is not safe to use it is not true.When insulation harden THEN IS NO ANY DUSTS and using long time insulation very very slow surface melting, but not dusts going to the air.
      However rigidizer is not bad it save insulation and make longer life for insulation and with rigidizer ceramic insulation become hard without heat it, so with rigidizer is better, but it is not important to use.👍🏻

      Mike, just spend a lot of evenings or whenever, watching all of his, and other similar videos. You'll gain the education you'll need to melt metals. A large dose of common sense will help, too! If you're still worried after watching 30-40 of these types of videos, then perhaps it's best for you to hold off getting started, until you have a better feeling. Finding someone local who's doing this, and who would let you come watch/help, would be a great way to become familiar with the risks & rewards!

When it comes to the wording the mouldmaking a good guy to check out as he had a learning to cast series just recently is Swdweeb, Also check out Paul’s Garage as his earlier casting videos he will give the correct terminology and knows How to explain casting things very well. Also Farmcraft101 certainly knows his casting stuff. Be Sure to let them know I sent you if you do check them out . They might be different priced so I would check that first But personally I would get it through eBay then if you pay by PayPal you should be covered and be able to know where it’s coming from and when it’ll get there. Be sure to let him know you saw his product on my video , I don’t get anything for it but it’ll show him it was a good idea to send me the furnace. Also only ever use the furnace in the well ventilated area And always stand up wind is this the Remick for the blanket that users can release very small fibers although after the first firing the ceramic blanket hardens and dramatically decreases the amount of fibers that will exit the furnace during operation. Just remember to use all PPE and always safety first my friend. If you want a link to how I made my tongs and lifter I can send you the link. I’ve searched everywhere on TH-cam and this definitely is the cheapest easiest set of tools to make at home with minimum effort. 👍🏻

    I bought a forge advertised as 10kg on ebay. The regulator was crap and melt times were up to 3hrs. After fitting it with a proper regulator melt time was 30 mins. But supplied crucible cratered after only 8 melts. The 10kg was not right either as a 10kg won't even fit in the furnace. Apparently, it was a 6kg. What model devil forge do you have and how big of a crucible does it fit?

      I never use the valve on the burner as I always turn it off at the tank and that way you can guarantee all fuel has been burnt and there’s no stored energy/propane.

    Do you think the 4kg light duty ceramic wool furnace would be too small

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly mate I would recommend getting the 10 kg , for that little bit extra money you have a furnace big enough for what you want to do and the heat efficiency of these things are so good you wouldn’t use any extra gas on the larger model. Also if you bought the small one and in the future decided to do a bigger melt or bigger ingots you would only have to buy the large model anyway but that’s just my personal opinion. With my 10 kg forges the maximum Crucible size I would use is 8 kg as I wouldn’t be able to get my lifter tongs around the Crucible to remove it so I’m thinking 4 kg furnace might only comfortably fit a 3 kg Crucible , again that’s just my opinion. But if you only ever want to do quite small melts like one or 2 kg at a time why not get that one I just think it’s better to have the extra size and not need it then to not have the extra size and want more👍🏻

      @bigstackD  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This furnace was given to me by the people over devil forge.com they sell them on eBay with different sizes different prices, The links in the description to the eBay page. They can get rather pricey although you can make your own quite cheaply if you search TH-cam for cheap mini melting foundries or cheap furnace builds people use pretty inexpensive stuff although they will break down over time. But then you’ll still need to buy a burner if you can’t make your own and again the guy Who makes these furnaces sells the burners and they are absolutely brilliant and again he has varying prices but they start at around $100 US. That’s if you want to go gas. A lot of people use charcoal in their mini furnaces but that’s extremely hard to get up to temperature to melt copper although melting aluminium in the cheap furnaces if you follow instructions correctly is relatively easy . Also there electric furnaces but they’re very expensive as well👍🏻. Hopefully this message makes a bit of sense remember always safety first and do your research I am self taught so half the things I do is probably wrong so definitely research other channels as well

      This is the FB2Mb model and the link to the eBay page for this item is below.
      This thing is scary powerful I have yet to melt brass in it as I’m worried it will heat up way too fast above the zincs boiling point so if you bought this model I would recommend getting a small burner as well to use when melting aluminium and brass . I have done this myself. Melting copper and aluminium bronze is super super fast and easy with this and I absolutely love it. It says can hold 10 kg Crucible but the max I would use would be an 8 kg otherwise I can’t get my lifter tools around the crucible to remove it from the furnace. A few people have had concerns about this furnaces ceramic blanket it has as insulation and I personally would be a touch concerned myself with the small fibres it will release from the furnace but if you use proper PPE and stay upwind it should be fine . Here is a message I received from the supplier about safety and the furnace and below that is the link for the furnace. Also if you are to choose to buy this be sure to let them know you saw it on my channel. I do not get any type of reward or money for this it’s just to let him know advertising on TH-cam is a good idea. There is a little bit in this message from the Manufacturer that might not be relevant just disregard that as I copied and pasted it , this message it’s quite long so bare with it😁.
      THE OWNER OF DEVIL - FORGE
      Ceramic fiber blanket insulation when get hot it harden the surface become hard, then it become more safer to use then if happen that some fibres will go to the air ventiliation catch it and remove from working area or quality safety protection mask will not let to brief that small particles it’s the Fact (ventiliation in working area must be for 2 reasons to catch harmful fibres if they will go to the air and to change the air in working space because powerfull burner can burn air very fast. Also use safety glasses to protect your ayes don’t look at burner flames.
      Mate bigstackD Casting have you remember when you touched insulation before you fired furnace first time?
      It was very soft now you have used the furnace at high temperature try to touch again the insulation and you will see the difference now it is hard.
      When insulation become hard then harmful fibres not going to the air however few percents may get to the air and then the guard is quality safety protection mask and good ventiliation.
      I saw somebody wrote that you should coat kaowool it’s not kaowool it’s ceramic fiber blanket insulation it’s different materials.
      I saw the comment with recommendation to coat insulation with sodium silicate. We not recommend do that because sodium silicate melting point is Melting point: 1,088 °C so what it mean? It mean that furnace can reach much more temperature inside and this your refractory sodium silicate will burn out and you will think that you are safe, but in real the refractory just burn out and will be the same that you will use the insulation without any refractory.
      Yes I agree with the Fact that better is to coat the insulation with refractory then insulation life will be longer and then the surface become much harder and will stop fibres going to the air more than just heat the insulation until it harden and surface become hard.
      But to coat insulation I not mean that use random no name material refractory which can not provide good protection and to make the coating process correct like is written in the instructions and to make this work quality then yes results will be good.
      We have the plans for the future to add an option to pay extra and order product with special refractory.
      We have some types of refractory and we need to make the tests and when tests results will be good then we will add the option to order with special refractory.
      Was some nice comments that we are layer and we just want earn more money.
      Is many peoples who reading these comments and let they decide with their brains who is true who not.
      However I was so impressed with bigstackD Casting metal melting experience/projects/movies

      This one’s a pretty big scary one but as long as you’ve done all your research it might be ok but still it’s probably a bit too powerful for beginners I would think . I used a smaller burner for years before getting this and it’s scary powerful and that’s after being used to the old furnace so to go from nothing straight to this could be quite daunting or intimidating on someone beginning ? . The guy has smaller models at a cheaper price if that’s your thing to start . When I started I got an electric furnace to just do one and 2 kg of copper at a time and get my head around it all, I then upgraded to a gas one when I wanted to do bigger melts

    • @piratedarling

      TheHockeygod1225
      10KG REFRACTORY VS 10KG CERAMIC WOOL
      The differences are matey the more expensive one is refractory concrete and the cheaper one is ceramic wool. Attached is a link to my video where I did a time trial and gas usage on all 4 different furnaces and I found the more expensive refractory furnace to be the slowest and less efficient as the refractory needs to be superheated before the chamber will come up to melting temperatures. The wool furnace has a little bit more chamber room then the refractory furnace. The wool furnace is over 20 kg lighter A lot cheaper and more efficient when melting by easily 25 to 30% and is very portable where as the ceramic furnace is over 30kg.
      They both have the same burner same fittings and have the exact same outer casing the only difference is the internal one is refractory concrete on the lid and walls whereas the other one is ceramic wool. When you get both furnaces the refectory one needs to be dried completely by running the burner on and off quite a few times on extremely low heat until all moisture has been eliminated and the ceramic wool furnace needs to be painted in some refractory coating and left to dry on its own which can take one or two days depending on your weather. The refractory furnace is built to last longer but I’ve been using the ceramic wool furnace flat out I have for over a year and all I really needed to do was apply some extra refractory to the walls and lid and it’s still working awesomely and further down the track I will just reline it with ceramic wool and then re-apply more coating and it would be basically brand-new again. I personally prefer the ceramic wool furnace as it’s just easier to unpack and move around and When you’re finished using the burner you can basically pick up the ceramic wool furnace and move it a few minutes after you’ve run it wearing gloves of course but the refractory furnace takes hours to cool down. If you go ahead with the ceramic wool furnace it will come with its own refractory coating and I would suggest only using 80% of it is that would be plenty to cover what you need and save the rest for touchups six or 12 months down the track.👌🏻

They are both an awesome product and I get nothing from Devil Forge to say that it’s just my personal opinion matey😁

      This video Is gonna be linked to the furnace builders eBay page and I had to remove all links and wording of his website as eBay policies don’t allow it, I’m sure its confused quite a few people but on Friday it’ll be a new video and back to normal😁👍🏻
