  • The Mk1 Golf GTi was the worlds first hot hatch and it inspired a completely new segment of cars. This 240hp Mk1 VW Golf GTi isn't quite what it seems. Just what would the Mk1 Golf GTi be like if it was made today ? Well this car has an updated modern interior from a Mk5 Golf GTi, the dash from a VW Polo and the 240 horsepower engine and gearbox from a 20 valve turbo Mk5 Golf Gti !!
A fantastic creation that certainly put a smile on your face, even if it does suffer from major torque steer and turbo lag !

It might just be me, but that looks more like a 1.8T 20v lump from a Mk4 chassis, rather than the 2.0 TFSI from the Mk5. It's even got the lower spec 150/180 inlet on it, rather than the 225 BAM inlet which is the otherside.

This video brought back some great memories. It’s fantastic to see these cars again, and I wonder how many remember the Astra GTE and Cavalier SRi? I would love to see one of these again, as my father owned a B registered Cav SRi back in the day.. Great stuff Peter👍

We had a 1989 Astra GTE 2.0 and remember it for the simply beautiful engine. Deep depths of torque, a refined, smooth delivery, fast, effortless and a joy to use. Yes the handling, ride etc was not great but it was a memorable car and greatly missed. It sold in 1997 but sadly was written off within weeks despite being as brand new when we had it. 🙂🙂🙂

The engine installation looks clean and I’m sure it’s a riot to drive and has a great body restoration. I think a lot more of the original interior should have been retained the seats look too big and the dash plain wrong. I’m old enough to have driven standard 1.8 Campaign GTIs in period as well as having owned a couple of 1.8 Injection Mk2 Sciroccos .110bhp is adequate these being light little cars. So on the whole I’d be for keeping it ‘standard’ as James May would say!

As we all now wish we could of kept our older cars.
Great to see there are engineers and enthusiasts that are keeping these older cars alive. And remember that car brand new was probably 1/2 the price of a certain bianchi bike. Lol.
I remember my mk1 1.1 Ford Fiesta did the boy racer thing. Webber carb with manual choke , k&n air filter and 4 into 1 3” exhaust. Vacuum gauge and a graphic equaliser lol. I though I was the dogs , at the age of 19

Many happy memories of blasting around the countryside in North Wales and the Lake District, as well as racing a Renault 5 Turbo around Marble Arch on our way back from a Prince concert at Earls Court. A quality automobile. I totally get the concept, a purist sleeper externally, with a twist of modern day architecture under the bonnet and internally. I'm sure an original more mechanical car would equally deliver a nostalgic era from behind the wheel and the same level of pleasure, albeit very different. There is a place for both variants. Hat's off to the creator, a stunning creation. A great feature as per usual Pete. Cheers.

If I remember correctly there was a one off build from some factory engineers who had a bit too much beer. They made a wide body Golf and mated it to a 928 platform. In isolation it sort of looked right until parked next to a normal one. There is a company in the US called Callaway who did turbo kits in the 80's. They made a MK1 GTI that put out about 150hp that was sold through some dealers. They were best known for a 400hp+ version of the C4 Corvette.

I think there's room for all, be that totally standard or pushing the envelope to see what creative minds are able to conjure up. Great cars either way.

What do you think about the highway code changes regarding cycling? Not sure about cycling in the middle of the lane. I tend to when descending, or when going past a junction. But otherwise, I ride where the left wheel of a car would be. Too close to the kerb and you get squeezed, but in the middle of the lane is a bit obnoxious.

I had a Mk1 Golf GTi back in the day, Pirelli wheels, nearly new. Great car, followed by other hot hatches. My fave? The mk1 Suzuki Swift GTi...
I've still never paid more than the £1200 insurance that my Mk2 Astra GTE cost me to this day, and that was the late 1980s...

I love these restomods where they keep the original on the outside but upgrade the engine/running gear to give you a more modern performance. Definitely took me back seeing the electric radio aerial and the sunroof winder lol…. Ahhh the days of using a coat hanger to get a radio signal!! 🤣 ……. The truth is that while we lusted after these cars in our youth, we are now spoilt by driving modern cars with modern brakes tyres etc and would now be horrified if we jumped back into 70/80s cars, so this sort of job gives you the best of all worlds 👍

mid 90's I had a BBR GTI 180 upgrade, Ronal alloys, suspension, exhaust & brakes to my 74k mk2. Sold it at 144k, only thing ever went wrong was failed fuel pump, my fault too as I never got round to changing it when I should have.N

I had a mk2 1.6 Driver. A basic Golf with a few GTi touches. Except for the engine. I'd love this set up in a resto"d mk2 GTi. Painted red as a tribute to my old car

It would be so much nicer if it were just the engine conversion the Lupo dash looks well out of place imo
I have owned 8 Mk1 golfs over the years, including one of the UK 1st early 79 1.6 4 speed Gti with the original tartan seats!
I currently still own one of the later cabriolet Gti’s
All of the have been great cars, mostly original in most respects other than an exhaust or some wheels and suspension
    Fantastic little cars

I get it. Many won’t, but how this mk1 has been restomod if you will, they have done a great job. Isn’t that engine a mk4 lump and the dash and steering wheel from a Lupo?
